The Rose Canyon fault is the southern extension of the larger Newport-Inglewood-Rose Canyon fault system, which represents a major structural boundary in the Inner Continental Borderland (ICB) offshore of southern California. Ten to fifteen percent of total plate boundary motion in southern California is thought to be accommodated by the faults of the ICB, but the exact distribution of slip is uncertain. With an onshore segment, the Rose Canyon fault offers an opportunity to measure the slip rate using traditional geodetic methods. In this study, we use Global Positioning System (GPS) surface velocities from a combined campaign and continuous GPS network to constrain elastic models of the Rose Canyon fault. We then compare the observed surface velocities with proposed conceptual models of regional fault connections that facilitate the transfer of slip into the Rose Canyon fault to assess how well the observations are explained by the models. The results of elastic half-space models suggest that the Rose Canyon fault may be slipping toward the higher end of geologic estimates, with the preferred model indicating a slip rate of 2.4 ± 0.5 mm/yr. Although limited in terms of near-fault benchmarks, we find an improved model fit using an asymmetrical elastic half-space model and a higher slip rate, suggesting a potential rheological contrast across the Rose Canyon fault, similar to observations from the northern Newport-Inglewood fault segments. Observed GPS surface velocities, background seismicity, and gravity anomalies south of San Diego Bay point toward a more easterly trace for the Rose Canyon fault, suggesting a possible connection with the San Miguel-Vallecitos fault system. High-resolution Chirp sub-bottom data were obtained offshore from the Northern Channel Islands (NCI), California, to image submerged paleoshorelines and assess local uplift rates. Although modern bathymetry is often used for modeling paleoshorelines, Chirp data image paleoshorelines buried beneath sediment that obscures their seafloor expression. The NCI were a unified landmass during the last glacial maximum (LGM; ~20 ka), when eustatic sea level was ~120 m lower than present. We identified seven paleoshorelines, ranging from ~28 to 104 m in depth, across this now-submerged LGM platform. Paleoshoreline depths were compared to local sea-level curves to estimate ages, which suggest that some were reoccupied over multiple sea-level cycles. Additionally, previous studies determined conflicting uplift rates for the NCI, ranging from 0.16 to 1.5 m/ka. Our results suggest that a rate on the lower end of this range better fits the observed submerged paleoshorelines. Using the uplift rate of ~0.16 m/ka, we estimate that paleoshorelines formed during Marine Oxygen Isotope Stage 3, the LGM, and the Younger Dryas stade are preserved on the NCI platform. Many fault zones trend through developed urban areas where their geomorphic expression is unclear, making it difficult to study fault zone details and assess seismic hazard. One example is the Holocene-active Rose Canyon fault zone, a strike-slip fault with potential to produce a M6.9 earthquake, which traverses the city of San Diego, California (USA). Several strands trend through densely populated areas, including downtown. Much of the developed environment in San Diego predates aerial imagery, making assessment of the natural landscape difficult. To comply with regulations on development in a seismically active area, geotechnical firms have conducted many private, small-scale fault studies in downtown San Diego since the 1980s. However, each report is site specific with minimal integration between neighboring sites, and there exists no resource where all data can be viewed simultaneously on a regional scale. Here, geotechnical data were mined from 268 individual reports and synthesized into an interactive geodatabase to elucidate fault geometry through downtown San Diego. In the geodatabase, fault segments were assigned a hazard classification, and their strike and dip characterized. Results show an active zone of discontinuous fault segments trending north-south in eastern downtown, including active faults outside the mapped regulatory Earthquake Fault Zone. Analysis of fault geometry shows high variability along strike that may be associated with a stepover into San Diego Bay. This type of geodatabase offers a method for compiling and analyzing a high volume of small-scale fault investigations for a more comprehensive understanding of fault zones located in developed regions. We present new results from paleoseismic trenches excavated across the main trace of the Rose Canyon fault zone (RCFZ) in Old Town-San Diego, California, to determine the timing of late-Holocene earthquakes. There is evidence for four large surface-rupturing events, as well as two smaller events, the youngest of which cuts the early historical living surface that contains glass, ceramics, and a historical era foundation. This youngest event is likely related to the 1862 San Diego earthquake, which had an estimated magnitude close to M 6. The age of older ruptures is constrained by 36 radiocarbon dates that exhibit good stratigraphic order. The four larger events produced substantially more ground deformation, and over a broader width of the fault zone, than the 1862 event. The youngest of the four larger events is found immediately below the historical horizon and likely correlates with the most recent event recognized at multiple trench sites along the RCFZ in San Diego and dates to the mid-1700s. The three older events have all occurred in the past 3300 yr, with the penultimate large event dated to about A.D. 1300. The results of this paleoseismic study indicate that the RCFZ has sustained activity throughout the late-Holocene and into the historical period. These results also suggest that the RCFZ has a late-Holocene recurrence interval of ~700 yr?, which is several hundred years shorter than previous estimates. Comparison of RCFZ paleoseismic results with paleoseismic data from the Newport-Inglewood fault zone (NIFZ) shows that some RCFZ earthquakes have similar timing with NIFZ events, most likely indicating the occurrence of a sequence or cluster of events on the coastal system of strike-slip faults. The alternative explanation--very large earthquakes rupturing both faults simultaneously--is unlikely when both the slip rate and recurrence intervals for these faults are considered. The recent discovery of a methane seep with diverse microhabitats and abundant groundfish in the San Diego Trough (1020 m) off the coast of Del Mar, California raised questions about the role of seep ecosystem functions and services in relation to continental margins. We used multicorer and ROV grab samples and an ROV survey to characterize macrofaunal structure, diversity, and trophic patterns in soft sediments and authigenic carbonates; seep microhabitats and taxa observed; and the abundance and spatial patterns of fishery-relevant species. Biogenic microhabitats near the Del Mar Seep included microbially precipitated carbonate boulders, bacterial mats, vesicomyid clam beds, frenulate and ampharetid beds, vestimentiferan tubeworm clumps, and fields of Bathysiphon filiformis tubes. Macrofaunal abundance increased and mean faunal δ13C signatures decreased in multicorer samples nearer the seep, suggesting that chemosynthetic production enhanced animal densities outside the seep center. Polychaetes dominated sediments, and ampharetids became especially abundant near microbial mats, while gastropods, hydroids, and sponges dominated carbonate rocks. A wide range of stable isotopic signatures reflected the diversity of microhabitats, and methane-derived carbon was the most prevalent source of nutrition for several taxa, especially those associated with carbonates. Megafaunal species living near the seep included longspine thornyhead ( Sebastolobus altivelis), Pacific dover sole ( Microstomus pacificus), and lithodid crabs ( Paralomis verrilli), which represent targets for demersal fisheries. Sebastolobus altivelis was especially abundant (6.5-8.2 fish·100 m−2) and appeared to aggregate near the most active seep microhabitats. The Del Mar Methane Seep, like many others along the world's continental margins, exhibits diverse ecosystem functions and enhances regional diversity. Seeps such as this one may also contribute ecosystem services if they provide habitat for fishery species, export production to support margin food webs, and serve as sinks for methane-derived carbon. The West Tahoe-Dollar Point fault (WTDPF) extends along the western margin of the Lake Tahoe Basin (northern Sierra Nevada, western United States) and is characterized as its most hazardous fault. Fallen Leaf Lake, Cascade Lake, and Emerald Bay are three subbasins of the Lake Tahoe Basin, located south of Lake Tahoe, and provide an opportunity to image primary earthquake deformation along the WTDPF and associated landslide deposits. Here we present results from high-resolution seismic Chirp (compressed high intensity radar pulse) surveys in Fallen Leaf Lake and Cascade Lake, multibeam bathymetry coverage of Fallen Leaf Lake, onshore Lidar (light detection and ranging) data for the southern Lake Tahoe Basin, and radiocarbon dates from piston cores in Fallen Leaf Lake and Emerald Bay. Slide deposits imaged beneath Fallen Leaf Lake appear to be synchronous with slides in Lake Tahoe, Emerald Bay, and Cascade Lake. The temporal correlation of slides between multiple basins suggests triggering by earthquakes on the WTDPF system. If this correlation is correct, we postulate a recurrence interval of ~3-4 k.y. for large earthquakes on the Fallen Leaf Lake segment of the WTDPF, and the time since the most recent event (~4.5 k.y. ago) exceeds this recurrence time. In addition, Chirp data beneath Cascade Lake image strands of the WTDPF offsetting the lake fl oor as much as ~7.5 m. The Cascade Lake data combined with onshore Lidar allow us to map the WTDPF continuously between Fallen Leaf Lake and Cascade Lake. This improved mapping of the WTDPF reveals the fault geometry and architecture south of Lake Tahoe and improves the geohazard assessment of the region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Marine hydrocarbon seeps are found on all continental margins and release significant amounts of greenhouse gases and hydrocarbons into the atmosphere and hydrosphere. Most methods of studying seeps rely on seafloor or near-seafloor observations, but seepage rates and seep locations can be variable, leading to uncertainty. We exploit the fact that hydrocarbons are electrically resistive compared with surrounding sediments and use marine electromagnetic methods to study the deeper sources and accumulation sites, which are controlled by local geology and should be more stable than the seabed expressions. Our surface towed marine controlled source electromagnetic system used a horizontal electric dipole transmitter and floating electric dipole receivers spaced 100–400 m from the transmitter, collecting frequency domain amplitude and phase data at ∼2 Hz and harmonics. The survey targeted known and inferred hydrocarbon seeps within the Coal Oil Point seep field offshore Santa Barbara, California, USA. Two dimensional inversions of the data indicate that the method is sensitive to the shallowly buried (<400 m) structure of the marine hydrocarbon seeps and is an efficient and effective tool in their identification and characterization. The results show spatial variability of seafloor hydrocarbons along the Coal Oil Point seep field and indicate at least two previously unidentified intermediate depth accumulation sites. The depth and lateral extent of these hydrocarbon accumulation sites may improve seep emission models for the Coal Oil Point seep field. • Marine EM sounding is an effective and efficient tool to study marine hydrocarbon seep geology. • Two previously unidentified hydrocarbon accumulation sites associated with overlying marine hydrocarbon seeps were imaged. • Resistivity models indicate significant changes in seafloor spatial extent of the Patch Seep compared to recent observations. • Vertical resistive features are collocated with faults and fractures indicating potential hydrocarbon migration pathways.
