The objective of this study is to better understand the usefulness of generic and condition specific HRQoL scales in schizophrenia by analyzing their correlates.Methods: Data formed part of the Pattern study, an international observational study among 1379 outpatients with schizophrenia. Patients were evaluated with the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Inventory, the Clinical Global Impression-Schizophrenia (CGI-SCH) Scale and the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and reported their HRQoL using the Schizophrenia Quality of Life Scale (SQLS), the Short Form-36 (SF-36), and the EuroQol-5 Dimension (EQ-5D). The two summary values of the SF-36 (the Mental Component Score and the Physical Component Score, SF-36 MCS and SF-36 PCS) were calculated.Results: Higher PANSS positive dimension ratings were associated with worse HRQoL for the SQLS, EQ-5D VAS, SF-36 MCS, and SF-36 PCS. Higher PANSS negative dimension ratings were associated with worse HRQoL for the EQ-5D VAS, SF-36 MCS, and SF-36 PCS, but not for the SQLS or the EQ-5D tariff. PANSS depression ratings were associated with lower HRQoL in all the scales. There was a high correlation between the HRQoL scales. However, in patients with more severe cognitive/disorganized PANSS symptoms, the SQLS score was relatively higher than the EQ-5D tariff and SF-36 PCS scores.Conclusion: This study has shown substantial agreement between three HRQoL scales, being either generic or condition specific. Background and Objectives: Magnetoencephalography (MEG) could be a valuable tool in the presurgical evaluation of drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE), especially when the initial evaluation is inconclusive. In this retrospective study, we describe the profile of MEG in patients with DRE and normal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Methods: We included patients with focal epilepsy and normal MRI who underwent presurgical evaluation for DRE. MEG profiles of these patients, including the frequency of spikes, density of clusters, number of clusters, and concordance with video electroencephalography (VEEG), were analyzed. Results: Of the 73 patients included, magnetic source imaging (MSI) provided localizing information in 51 (69.9%) patients. Among patients with localizing MEG findings, localizing information on VEEG too was noted in 42 (57.5% of the whole cohort). Thirty-one (42.5%) patients had concordant findings with region-specific localization, six (8.2%) patients had partial concordance, and five (6.8%) subjects showed discordant findings. There was a moderate agreement for the presumed epileptogenic zone in comparing findings derived from MEG and VEEG (kappa value of 0.451, P < 0.001). The agreement was lower when MEG localized to the frontal lobe (kappa value of 0.379, P = 0.001) than the temporal lobe (kappa value 0.442, P = 0.002). Conclusions: MEG can provide localizing information in most patients with a normal MRI. A moderate degree of agreement between localization by MEG and VEEG was noted. These findings highlight the usefulness of MSI in the presurgical evaluation of MRI-negative DRE. Background Social determinants of health (SDOH) have been associated with diabetes risk; however, their association with cardiovascular disease (CVD) events in individuals with diabetes is poorly described. We hypothesized that a greater number of SDOH among individuals with diabetes would be associated with a higher risk of CVD events. Abstract Lysine-specific histone demethylase 1 (LSD1) is a histone demethylase that plays a critical role in epigenetic regulation by removing the methyl group from mono- and di-methylated lysine 4 on histone H3 (H3K4me1/2), acting as a repressor of gene expression. Recently, catalytically independent functions of LSD1, serving as a scaffold for assembling chromatin-regulator and transcription factor complexes, have been identified. Herein, we show for the first time that LSD1 interacts with chromodomain-helicase-DNA-binding protein 7 (CHD7) in mouse embryonic stem cells (ESCs). To further investigate the CHD7–LSD1 crosstalk, we engineered Chd7 and Chd7/Lsd1 knockout (KO) mouse ESCs. We show that CHD7 is dispensable for ESC self-renewal and survival, while Chd7 KO ESCs can differentiate towards embryoid bodies (EBs) with defective expression of ectodermal markers. Intriguingly, Chd7/Lsd1 double KO mouse ESCs exhibit proliferation defects similar to Lsd1 KO ESCs and have lost the capacity to differentiate properly. Furthermore, the increased co-occupancy of H3K4me1 and CHD7 on chromatin following Lsd1 deletion suggests that LSD1 is required for facilitating the proper binding of CHD7 to chromatin and regulating differentiation. Collectively, our results suggest that LSD1 and CHD7 work in concert to modulate gene expression and influence proper cell fate determination.

Zenker's diverticulum (ZD) is an acquired, false, and pulsion diverticulum formed by the protrusion of mucosa and submucosa through Killian's dehiscence. The index case is a 91-year-old Nepali patient with a known history of diabetes mellitus, hypertension, rheumatic heart disease, and stage 4 chronic kidney disease, who has been experiencing dysphagia, halitosis, and chronic cough for 25 years. A computed tomography (CT) scan of the chest revealed an outpouching filled with air, fluid, and some solid contents, arising at the level of the cricoid cartilage and extending posteriorly to the esophagus, compressing it. A barium swallow test was performed for confirmation and revealed similar findings. The patient was counseled for surgery but declined due to old age and comorbidities. ZD is commonly seen in the geriatric population and patients with neuromuscular discordance. Barium swallow and CT chest scans can diagnose ZD, and surgery is the mainstay of treatment.

The objectives of this study were to validate the effectiveness of using instructional videos in online introductory accounting courses and to examine how specific student characteristics relate to online video-viewing behavior. Data were collected from ten online course sections of introductory financial accounting taught by two different instructors in the fall 2021 and spring 2022 semesters (n = 240). Students were instructed, but not required, to watch faculty-recorded instructional videos before completing the homework assignments and assessments for each topic. Students' percentage of course videos viewed and final course grades were analyzed. The relationships between students' video-viewing behavior and the student characteristics of gender, program major, age, degree level, ethnicity, and GPA, were also analyzed. The findings clearly show that viewing faculty-recorded instructional videos significantly impacts actual student performance. Students' age and the percentage of videos viewed are weakly but positively correlated, whereas students' GPAs and the percentage of videos viewed are significantly correlated. The final contribution is a predictive multivariable model that can predict student outcomes based on the significant predictors of GPA and the percentage of videos viewed. This paper contributes empirical data about using faculty-recorded videos in asynchronous, online accounting courses.

Keeping this fact in mind, we planned this open-label study to see the effect on various metabolic parameters after switching stable schizophrenia subjects, who had developed metabolic syndrome on olanzapine, to aripiprazole.Methods: Sixty-two patients with schizophrenia who were stable on olanzapine and were fulfilling modified National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP-III) criteria for the presence of metabolic syndrome were enrolled on the study. Patients were randomly assigned either to switch to aripiprazole or to stay on olanzapine, on a 1:1 basis. Cross-tapering over a period of 1 month was done while switching patients to aripiprazole. Laboratory assessment for metabolic parameters was done at baseline, 8 weeks, and 24 weeks after enrollment; efficacy assessment was done using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) at baseline and 24 weeks, the Clinical Global Impressions severity subscale (CGI-S) at baseline, and the Clinical Global Impressions improvement subscale (CGI-I) at 24 weeks.Results: All parameters of metabolic syndrome (waist circumference, blood pressure, triglyceride level, fasting blood glucose, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol) kept deteriorating in the stay group, compared with a continuous improvement in the switch group over time. In aquatic ecosystems microplastics (MPs) provide new habitat for microbes, forming the plastisphere. While, the effect of different pollution sources on microbiome compositions, functions and assembly processes remains largely cryptic, and hence requires further investigation. Thus, in this study microplastic and surrounding water samples were collected from four different locations and performed meta-analysis to evaluate the impact of different pollution sources on microbial community composition, function and assembly in plastisphere and surrounding environment.
