The development of stabilized silver nanoparticles (AgNP) is paramount in preventing the build-up of pathogenic biofilms. AgNP also requires a suitable support system to deliver the AgNP directly to the bacteria. Herein, AgNP-supported zeolite A was prepared via the in situ phytosynthesis method using Orthosiphon aristatus extract based on our previous work. The optimal condition of AgNP biosynthesis was achieved at 0.4 mL of the leaf extract in 10 mL AgNO3 1 mM. The AgNP was incorporated into zeolite A using the in situ approach. The developed materials were characterized by their porosity, surface area, thermogravimetry, and zeta potential. The morphology of samples was distinguished using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The distribution of AgNP into the macroporous zeolite A was measured according to the reduction of specific pore volume from 0.1033 to 0.0346 cm3/g. Anti-biofilm and morphological assessments revealed that AgNP-supported zeolite A induced a good biofilm inhibition against bacteria Staphylococcus aureus (p < 0.0001) than Pseudomonas aeruginosa at 1 mg/mL because of less intolerance against AgNP. The biofilm formation was reduced by more than 50% and 15%, respectively, compared to the untreated bacteria. Bacteria tend to attach to the zeolite surface, and the AgNP incorporated in the zeolite would easily interact with the bacteria, inducing peptide bond alteration, which leads to structural disintegration. For many years, combination therapies with two or more antimicrobial agents have gained interest to address the problem of emerging antibiotic resistance. Several studies have shown that the addition of AgNPs enhances the antimicrobial activity of antibiotics against resistant pathogens. However, the antibacterial activity of phytosynthesised silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in combination with antibiotics has not been extensively studied. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the antibacterial activity of the phytosynthesised AgNPs with different antibiotics against two common pathogenic bacteria, namely methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. A green method was used to produce AgNPs, where Persicaria odorata extract acted as a reducing and stabilising agent in the aqueous synthesis process. The production of AgNPs was verified through various analytical techniques, including ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray. Notably, strong absorption spectrum corresponding to the surface plasmon resonance peaks of AgNPs was found at 436 nm, with particles ranging from 10 to 35 nm. The disc diffusion technique was used to investigate the antibacterial activity of AgNPs, both alone and in combination with antibiotics. Initially, the MRSA and P. aeruginosa showed 100 % resistance to antibiotics, especially ampicillin. However, the disc diffusion result exhibit a significant increase in the inhibition zone when ampicillin-AgNPs, cefoxitin-AgNPs and chloramphenicol-AgNPs were used in combination. In short, the findings of this study showed that AgNPs exhibit a promising synergy when used in combination with antibiotics, opening up possibilities for future combination therapies against antibiotic-resistant pathogens. This study deals with the synthesis of zeolite from natural kaolinite using hydrothermal treatment and evaluation of its phase transformation behaviors. The synthesized zeolites were modified with silver ion by using the ion exchange method for the enhancement of antibacterial properties. The characterizations were performed by using X‐ray diffraction spectroscopy, Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and energy‐dispersive X‐ray. Disk diffusion technique (DDT) was used for the evaluation of the antibacterial property of the modified zeolites. This study observed the transformation of kaolinite into amorphous metakaolin after calcination treatment at 900°C and the successful reconstruction of amorphous metakaolin into synthesized crystal zeolite in the presence of sodium hydroxide as an activating agent. It was also found that the zeolite type A was produced at 100°C, while sodalites were produced at 120 and 140°C. DDT analysis revealed that the modified zeolites showed significant antibacterial capability against Escherichia coli ATCC 11229 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538. Silver (Ag)-based materials are widely used as effective antibacterial agents for a wide spectrum of bacteria. There is a great challenge to reduce the amount of Ag in Ag-based materials without limiting its antibacterial activity. Herein, the Ag-zeolite NaY (50% from its cation exchange capacity) was functionalized with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane to produce an amine functionalized, Ag-zeolite NaY. The results showed that the functionalization of Ag-zeolite NaY improved its antibacterial activity against a wide spectrum of bacteria ( Escherichia coli ATCC11229 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC6538), especially in solutions containing electrolyte (saline solution), although it has a lower surface area, pore volume and amount of Ag released compared to those of zeolite NaY and Ag-zeolite NaY. Thus, the functionalization of Ag-based materials is a promising approach to reducing the amount of Ag required in Ag-based material while improving its antibacterial activity. Chlorhexidine acetate-loaded silver-kaolinite (CA-Ag-Kaol) was prepared and characterised, and its application as an antibacterial agent was studied. CA-Ag-Kaol was prepared by the adsorption of chlorhexidine acetate (CA) (0.5 mmol/L) on Ag (50% of the Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC) of kaolinite) on kaolinite. Kaolinite (Kaol), silver-kaolinite (Ag-Kaol), CA-modified kaolinite (CA-Kaol) and CA-Ag-Kaol were characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, field-emission scanning-electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, zeta potential analysis and dispersion behavior measurements. The modification of kaolinite with cationic silver and chlorhexidine ions did not change the structure of kaolinite, and the characterization of the kaolinite samples revealed the successful loading of cationic silver and chlorhexidine ions on the kaolinite. The antibacterial assay of the samples was carried out against Escherichia coli ATCC 11229, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 15442, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 and Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212 using the disc diffusion technique (DDT) and the minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) technique. Based on the antibacterial assay, CA-Ag-Kaol showed better antibacterial activity than Ag-Kaol and CA-Kaol, and it performed well in both distilled water and a 0.9% saline solution. Gram-positive bacteria were more susceptible to the antibacterial behavior of Ca-Ag-Kaol than Gram-negative bacteria. In conclusion, silver-kaolinite that has been loaded with chlorhexidine acetate can be used as an effective antibacterial agent because of its high antibacterial activity against wide spectrum of bacteria in solutions containing electrolytes (saline solution). The antibacterial activity of regenerated NaY zeolite (thermal treatment from cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB)-modified NaY zeolite and pretreatment with Na ions) loaded with silver ions were examined using the broth dilution minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) method against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ATCC 11229) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ATCC 6538). X-ray diffraction (XRD), attenuated total reflectance–Fourier transform infrared (ATR–FTIR) spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and chemical elemental analyses were used to characterize the regenerated NaY and AgY zeolites. The XRD patterns indicated that the calcination and addition of silver ions on regenerated NaY zeolite did not affect the structure of the regenerated NaY zeolite as the characteristic peaks of the NaY zeolite were retained, and no new peaks were observed. The regenerated AgY zeolite showed good antibacterial activity against both bacteria strains in distilled water, and the antibacterial activity of the samples increased with increasing Ag loaded on the regenerated AgY zeolite; the regenerated AgY zeolite was more effective against E. coli than S. aureus . However, the antibacterial activity of the regenerated AgY was not effective in saline solution for both bacteria. The study showed that CTAB-modified NaY zeolite materials could be regenerated to NaY zeolite using thermal treatment (550 °C, 5 h) and this material has excellent performance as an antibacterial agent after silver ions loading. Amine-functionalized, silver-exchanged zeolite NaY (ZSA) were prepared with three different concentrations of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) (0.01, 0.20 and 0.40 M) and four different concentrations of silver ions (25%, 50%, 100% and 200% from zeolite cation exchange capacity (CEC)). The samples were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), surface area analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and zeta potential (ZP) analysis. The FTIR results indicated that the zeolite was functionalized by APTES and that the intensity of the peaks corresponding to APTES increased as the concentration of APTES used was increased. The antibacterial activities of the silver-exchanged zeolite NaY (ZS) and ZSA were studied against Escherichia coli ATCC11229 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC6538 using the disc diffusion technique (DDT) and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). The antibacterial activity of ZSA increased with the increase in APTES on ZS, and E. coli was more susceptible towards the sample compared to S. aureus. The FESEM micrographs of the bacteria after contact with the ZSA suggested different mechanisms of bacterial death for these two bacteria due to exposure to the studied sample. The functionalization of ZS with APTES improved the antibacterial activity of the silver-zeolite, depending on the concentration of silver ions and APTES used during modification. This paper discusses the formation of cetylpyridinium bromide (CPB), a cationic surfactant quaternary ammonium compound (QAC), immobilized on kaolinite with different initial CPB concentrations ([CPB] i ) and their effect on the antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli . The CPB-immobilized kaolinites were characterized by a CHNS analyzer, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), zeta potential (ZP) analysis and the amount of CPB adsorbed on kaolinite. The antibacterial assay of the samples was studied through the disk diffusion technique (DDT) against E. coli as a model bacterium. The amount of CPB adsorbed on kaolinite did not affect the structure of the parent kaolinite but affected the overall charge of the kaolinite and eventually affected their antibacterial activity. CPB-immobilized kaolinite with [CPB] i above the critical micelle concentration (CMC) possessed antibacterial activity because of reversal of the charge from negative to positive on the kaolinite surfaces, as proven by ZP analysis, which could allow the action of CPB molecules against bacteria cells. This was due to the bilayer formation of surfactant molecules via hydrophobic bonding of their long hydrocarbon chains on the kaolinite surfaces at surfactant concentrations above the CMC value. Therefore, one of the important factors in producing antibacterial agents from surfactant immobilized kaolinite (organo-clay) is by loading excess surfactant on the clay above its CMC level to ensure bilayer formation of surfactant molecules on clay surfaces. The novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) was responsible for the outbreak of coronavirus disease (COVID‐19). The respiratory illness has rapidly spread worldwide and has claimed millions of lives. Although most countries have entered the endemic phase, health authorities warned that future variants could be more virulent than the existing ones. Since clinical trials of antiviral drugs for COVID‐19 may last even a year before approval, developing alternative approaches to combat the virus becomes mandatory. Previously, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have exhibited an impressive track record in controlling numerous viral diseases, including COVID‐19. In this article, we review recent applications of CNTs for the prevention, detection, and treatment of COVID‐19. We highlight the strategies and prospective developments of CNTs in producing personal protection equipment (PPE), vaccines, immune‐triggering, development of biosensors and therapeutic strategies. The synthesized zeolite NaY from rice husk ash (RHA) and the commercial zeolite NaY both modified with surfactants in amounts equal to 50%, 100% and 200% of their external cation exchange capacity (ECEC) were used to remove chromate and arsenate anions from aqueous solutions. While the unmodified zeolite Y had little or no affinity for the Cr(VI) and As(V) anionic species, the surfactant-modified zeolite Y (SMZY) showed significant ability to remove of these anions from the aqueous solutions. The highest chromates and arsenates adsorption efficiency was observed from solutions of pH values 3 and 8, respectively because of the dominance of the univalent species of both anions. The adsorption equilibrium data were best fitted with the Langmuir isotherm model with the highest removal capacities observed for the SMZY initially prepared considering the hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium (HDTMA) amount equal to the 100% of the ECEC of zeolite Y. Synthesized SMZY remove Cr(VI) and As(V) more than the corresponding commercial one due to its lower silica to alumina ratio. Thus, the HDTMA-covered modified zeolite Y synthesized using RHA can be used to remove Cr(VI) and As(V) from water. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-Mn0.25Fe2,75O4/Ag ferrogels was fabricated by using the freezing-thawing method. Mn0.25Fe2.75O4/Ag magnetic fillers of ferrogels were synthesized by using coprecipitation and chemical reduction methods. Characterization of Mn0.25Fe2.75O4/Ag nanopowders was carried out using X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM) instrument, and antimicrobial activity. At the same time, CMC/PVA-Mn0.25Fe2.75O4/Ag ferrogels were characterized by using magnetothermal instrument. The XRD pattern of the magnetite filler shows the peaks by the Fe3O4 and Ag phases, respectively. The TEM image, there are Mn0.25Fe2.75O4 and Ag with particle size distributions of 5–7 and 10–13 nm, respectively. The hysterical curve from VSM characterization shows a decrease in the value of magnetization saturation from 16.9 to 14.7 emu/g along with the addition of Ag material. Antimicrobial activity was tested using the agar diffusion method. Mn0.25Fe2.75O4/Ag samples showed very good results indicated by the widening of the zone of inhibition around the sample. A series of new tungsten oxide modified heptazine-based crystalline carbon nitride (CCN-(x)WO 3) composite materials with different W loading amount (x = 0.1–1.0 wt%) were successfully synthesized via modified ionothermal and wet impregnation methods. The XRD and FTIR analyses results of confirmed the presence of highly ordered heptazine unit and C N terminal of CCN framework in the synthesized CCN-WO 3 composites. The introduction of more WO 3 has shifted the optical property of the CCN-WO 3 composites to higher wavelength. The TEM and FESEM analyses on CCN-WO 3 revealed the presence of WO 3 in needle like shape decorated on the surface of CCN. Among, material CCN-(0.25)WO 3 has exhibited the highest photocatalytic degradation of phenol which was 1.5 and 15 times higher than bare CCN and WO 3 within 6 h exposure of visible light, respectively. The synergistic effect by co-existence of CCN and WO 3 has induced the formation of highly ordered hepatize subunit of CCN, broadening light absorption in visible region, high surface area, low electron-hole recombination and high electron-transfer rate constant, which in turn enhanced the photocatalytic performance of CCN-WO 3. The radical scavenger studies confirmed that the synthesized CCN-WO 3 composite was an excellent visible light driven photocatalyst for phenol degradation. Reverse osmosis (RO) is a well-established and reliable desalination method that has been widely implemented on a commercial scale to resolve water scarcity issues. Constant efforts have been made to develop thin film composite membranes that can strike a balance between selectivity and permeability, while maintaining high durability towards fouling and chlorine attack. In this work, the surface of thin film composite RO membrane was modified by complexing tannic acid (TA) and silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs). TA was used for enhancing the chlorine resistance while Ag NPs act as a biocide to mitigate biofouling. Upon the formation of PA layer through interfacial polymerization, TA was chemically grafted, proceeded by in-situ reduction of Ag NPs. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) image revealed that Ag NPs were deposited on top of the TA-PA interlayer and reduced as discrete spherical Ag NPs with diameter <15 nm. The greatest flux of 20.57 L/m2·h was produced by TFC-TA/Ag1, representing a 60 % improvement as compared to neat TFC membrane. The NaCl rejection of TFC-TA membrane was 97.83 %, which was slightly increased compared to neat TFC membrane with rejection of 95.14 %. Improved chlorine resistance and improved antibacterial properties against Gram-positive bacteria (S. aureus) and Gram-negative bacteria (E. coli) were witnessed for the TFC-TA/Ag1 membranes. This study demonstrates a facile chemical grafting and deposition to introduce multiple functionalities for improving the physical and separation properties of TFC RO membrane. Eggshell membrane (ESM) is a highly-collagenized, biopolymeric fibrous network generally considered domestic and industrial waste. However, its inherent extraordinary properties have made ESM widely used in different fields due to its high potential applications, especially in the biomedical field. In this study , a poly (Ɛ-caprolactone) (PCL) integrated ESM (PCL/ESM) nanofibrous mat is fabricated using an electrospinning technique to produce wound dressing materials with enhanced biocompatibility and antibacterial efficacy for potent tissue regeneration. The physicochemical, biological, and mechanical properties of the electrospun fabricated nanofibrous mat PCL (15% w/v) and PCL/ESM (0.5% w/v, 1.5% w/v, and 2.5% w/v) were investigated using FE-SEM, ATR-FTIR, DSC, and XRD. In addition, the water uptake ability, degradability, cell viability, and antibacterial activity of the mats were evaluated. The FTIR results revealed that the molecular interactions of ESM with the PCL are through hydrogen bond formation. The morphology and the nanofiber dimension of the electrospun fabricated mat are within the collagen dimensions present in the extracellular matrix. The overall results confirm that the PCL/ESM (2.5% w/v) have shown the most excellent mechanical properties with high biocompatibility and efficient antibacterial activity among the other fabricated mat. The tailoring of the physico-chemical properties of thin film composite (TFC) membranes is essential to augment their separation performances. Maintaining a good balance between water productivity and rejection is one of the important criteria for efficient water treatment. This work reports a nanomaterial-enabled templating strategy used for the construction of a TFC substrate layer. Beta ferric oxy-hydroxides (β-FeOOH) nanorods were used as a pore forming template for polysulfone (PSf) substrate. The templating strategy using β-FeOOH nanorods increased the porosity and pore space connectivity of the PSf substrate, hence facilitating the formation of homogenous and defect-free polyamide selective layers through interfacial polymerization (IP) on top of the PSf substrate. The best membrane, a-TFC β2 which was fabricated using etched PSf substrate preloaded with 1 wt% β-FeOOH exhibited an increase in water permeance by 3-fold compared to the neat TFC membrane while maintaining NaCl rejection of 97.5%. Furthermore, the templating strategy endowed the membrane with better 72 h operational stability, where the water permeance and selectivity were not much deteriorated compared to that of neat membrane. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using substrate templating technique to finetune the porosity and surface pore properties for an optimized IP reaction and hence, enhancing the desalination performance. Forward osmosis (FO) has been recognized as the preferred alternative membrane-based separation technology for conventional water treatment technologies due to its high energy efficiency and promising separation performances. FO has been widely explored in the fields of wastewater treatment, desalination, food industry and bio-products, and energy generation. The substrate of the typically used FO thin film composite membranes serves as a support for selective layer formation and can significantly affect the structural and physicochemical properties of the resultant selective layer. This signifies the importance of substrate exploration to fine-tune proper fabrication and modification in obtaining optimized substrate structure with regards to thickness, tortuosity, and porosity on the two sides. The ultimate goal of substrate modification is to obtain a thin and highly selective membrane with enhanced hydrophilicity, antifouling propensity, as well as long duration stability. This review focuses on the various strategies used for FO membrane substrate fabrication and modification. An overview of FO membranes is first presented. The extant strategies applied in FO membrane substrate fabrications and modifications in addition to efforts made to mitigate membrane fouling are extensively reviewed. Biofouling is an inevitable obstacle that impairs the overall performance of polymeric membranes used in water and wastewater treatment. This research focuses on the development of a novel nanocomposite membrane incorporating an antibacterial agent which has the potential to diminish membrane biofouling. An antibacterial agent, zeolitic imidazole framework-8 decorated with graphene oxide (ZGO), was functionalised with amino groups via direct post-modification method using ammonium hydroxide solution. The modified sample was then incorporated into polyethersulfone (PES) matrix at different weight loadings to produce ultrafiltration hollow fibre membranes by phase inversion method. The surface hydrophilicity and roughness of the membrane were improved with additional incorporation of ZGO–NH. The filtration results indicate that the permeation properties of the composite membranes were significantly improved compared to unmodified PES membranes. The water flux of the composite membranes increased with increasing ZGO–NH amount. The optimum value of ZGO–NH content is 1.0 wt%, in which the water flux reached the maximum value at 95.49 L/m2 h, 64.0% higher than that of neat PES membrane while maintaining BSA rejection of >95.0%. Moreover, the modified membranes also exhibited impressive antifouling properties with a flux recovery ratio (FRR) of 84.4% which is significantly higher than that of unmodified PES membranes (57.1%). The composite membrane possessed antibacterial capability against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus , having an antibacterial rate of 81.1% and 85.7%, respectively. In this work, the novel imprinted zeolite (IZ) was synthesized, and its properties and performance in terms of adsorption of p -Cresol, which represent the protein-bounded uremic toxins in aqueous phase under phosphate buffer saline, were studied and compared with the synthesized zeolite-Y (ZeoY-S) and commercial CBV 100 zeolite-Y (ZeoY-C). The ZeoY-S was synthesized from sodium aluminate, NaOH, H 2 O and SiO 2 under aging for 24 h at room temperature and hydrothermal condition for 24 h at 100 °C, with an initial composition of 10SiO 2 :Al 2 O 3 :4Na 2 O:180H 2 O. The ZeoY-S has been modified by using the imprinting technology to produce the IZ via the use of p -Cresol as a template. The p -Cresol successfully imprinted on the zeolite-Y was proved through the multipoint Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and the performance of IZ that was compared to ZeoY-S and ZeoY-C. Based on the BET results, it proves that the pore size of IZ is in accordance with the target compound, which is p -Cresol at 0.79 nm. This modification was able to adsorb p -Cresol 2.5 and 3.5 times higher than ZeoY-S and ZeoY-C can, respectively. Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models, together with the pseudo-first and -second order and intra-particle diffusion kinetics models, were used to investigate the adsorption behavior of p -Cresol on the zeolites. The IZ has 4.30 times greater competitive molecules than ZeoY-S and the properties of IZ were not influenced by the content of other phenolic group uremic toxins as competitive molecules. It can be concluded that the micropores of zeolite as adsorbent can be modified using the imprinting technology in order to increase its sensitivity and selectivity towards p -Cresol.
