Very high temperature operation β-Ga2O3 Schottky contacts were fabricated on moderately doped 2 ¯ 01 β-Ga2O3 single crystal substrates using four different types of intentionally oxidized platinum group metal (PGM) Schottky contacts (SCs), i.e., PtOx, IrOx, PdOx, and RuOx (x ∼ 2.0, 2.2, 1.1, and 2.4, respectively) formed by reactive rf sputtering of plain-metal targets in an oxidizing plasma. All four types of oxidized PGM SCs showed rectification ratios (at ± 3 V) of more than 10 orders of magnitude up to 300 °C, with almost no measurable increase in reverse leakage current density (Jrev) from that at room temperature. From 350 to 500 °C, a measurable increase in Jrev was observed, which was consistent with the thermionic emission of charge carriers over the respective image force (IF) lowered Schottky barriers. Despite this increase, PtOx(IrOx)[PdOx]{RuOx} SCs showed large rectification ratios (at ± 3 V) of 6 × 106(8 × 106)[5 × 105]{2 × 104} and IF-corrected barrier heights of 2.10(2.10)[1.90]{1.60} ± 0.05 eV, respectively, while operating at 500 °C. The significantly lower 500 °C barrier height of the RuOx SCs was due to the thermal reduction of RuOx to Ru that occurred above 400 °C. In contrast, the Schottky barriers of IrOx, PtOx, and PdOx SCs were thermally stable while operating at 500 °C, indicating significant potential for their use in very high temperature rectifying devices. Recent experimental results on formation of ordered surface nanostructures of hexagonal symmetry on metals under the action of a series of scanned doubled collinear femtosecond pulses of orthogonal polarization and variable time delay are analyzed. It is demonstrated that the appearance of structures is related to the formation of a dynamic grating by the first pulse and excitation of two pairs of surface plasmon–polaritons by the second pulse in directions symmetric with respect to its vector of polarization and forming an angle of π/3 with each other. This leads to the formation of corresponding dynamic gratings and fourfold degeneracy of the first grating. Three dynamic gratings symmetric with respect to the surface normal form a residual surface relief of hexagonal symmetry that can be observed experimentally. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Experimental results of laser-induced deposition of structured metal films from metalloorganic vapor have been analyzed. A new physical model has been put forward to explain the results. There has been considerable investment in efforts to improve postoperative pain management, including the introduction of acute pain teams. There have also been a number of guidelines published on postoperative pain management and there is widespread agreement on how pain should be practically managed. Despite these advances, there is no apparent improvement in the number of patients experiencing moderately severe or extreme pain after surgery. This highlights significant scope for improvement in acute postoperative pain management. In January 2009, a multidisciplinary UK expert panel met to define and agree a practical framework to encourage implementation of the numerous guidelines and fundamentals of pain management at a local level. The panel recognised that to do this, there was a need to organise the information and guidelines into a simplified, accessible and easy-to-implement system based on their practical clinical experience. Given the volume of literature in this area, the Chair recommended that key international guidelines from professional bodies should be distributed and then reviewed during the meeting to form the basis of the framework. Consensus was reached by unanimous agreement of all ten participants. This report provides a framework for the key themes, including consensus recommendations based upon practical experience agreed during the meeting, with the aim of consolidating the key guidelines to provide a fundamental framework which is simple to teach and implement in all areas. Key priorities that emerged were: Responsibility, Anticipation, Discussion, Assessment and Response. This formed the basis of RADAR, a novel framework to help pain specialists educate the wider care team on understanding and prioritising the management of acute pain. Acute postoperative pain can be more effectively managed if it is prioritised and anticipated by a well-informed care team who are educated with regard to appropriate analgesic options and understand what the long-term benefits of pain relief are.
