Abstract

A study was conducted to analyze film tension and film rupture of alkanes at the air-water interface. Two pairs of immiscible liquids were utilized in the study, namely, hexadecane-water and dodecane-water. An inverted pendant alkane drop was utilized to determine the interfacial tension between alkane and water. Experimental results indicated that the alkane film at the air-water interface supported high tension value.

Abstract

Epitaxial Sr1.8Ca0.2NaNb5O15 (SCNN) thin films slab waveguide structures that support several low-loss transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes were grown on MgO(100) substrates by pulsed laser deposition. To optimize the waveguiding properties, the relationship between film microstructure and deposition temperature was investigated by x-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The prism coupler technique provides for the refractive indices and structural anisotropy of the core SCNN films deposited at various temperatures. Characterization based on this technique is proposed as a mean to relate the surface morphology to optical features such as the full width at half maximum of the excited guide mode. Abstract

A practical method to tackle the sign problem in real-time path integral simulations is proposed based on the multilevel blocking idea. The formulation is made possible by using a cumulant expansion of the action, which in addition to addressing the sign problem, provides an unbiased estimator for the action from a statistically noisy sample of real-time paths. The cumulant formulation also allows the analytical gradients of the action to be computed with little extra computational effort, and it can easily be implemented in a massively parallel environment. Abstract

Sr0.6Ba0.4Nb2O6 (SBN) films have been fabricated on (001)Si substrates by a sol-gel technique. The annealing process was carried out in air at various temperatures ranging from 200 to 700 °C. Studies using x-ray diffractometry, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy showed that polycrystalline films, with a grain size of about 100 nm, were obtained only for annealing temperatures >=600 °C. The optical properties of these sol-gel derived SBN films were studied by spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE). In the analysis of the measured SE spectra, a triple-layer Lorentz model has been developed and used to deduce the optical properties of the SBN films. Our systematic SE measurements revealed that the refractive indices of the SBN films increase with the annealing temperature. This increase is more pronounced at around the crystallization temperature, i.e., between 500 and 600 °C. The extinction coefficients of the films also exhibit a similar trend, showing a zero value for amorphous films and larger values for films annealed at above 600 °C. Our results demonstrate that while crystallization helps to raise the refractive index of the film due to film densification, it also promotes scattering by grain boundary, resulting in a larger extinction coefficient. Abstract

Epitaxial and polycrystalline ferroelectric Sr1.8Ca0.2NaNb5O15 thin films have been prepared by pulsed laser deposition on (100)MgO and fused quartz substrates, respectively. These films exhibit excellent surface flatness and high optical transmittance of about 80% over the whole visible region. Their good optical waveguide characteristics are demonstrated using prism coupling technique. Our results show that the internal scattering of the film is more influential in governing the propagation loss than the surface scattering, and that a heteroepitaxial growth of ferroelectric oxide films is essential for waveguide devices. Abstract

Time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) near 540 nm, taken from barium titanate (BaTiO3) ultrafine powders of ∼80, 90, and 110 nm in size, was measured at 11 K. Two-exponential functions were found to fit the decay curves well, and the decay lifetimes were composed of one short, about 10 ns, and one long, about 200 ns, time constants, respectively. Results also indicate that the PL peaks show a small blueshift with decreasing BaTiO3 particle size. The decay process consists of the recombination of self-trapped excitons (long lifetime decay) and of the electrons in the surface states with the holes in the valence band (short lifetime decay). The short lifetime component makes comparable contribution to the decay intensity of PL with the long lifetime one. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
