Paracostibite (CoSbS) has recently been identified as a promising thermoelectric (TE) material, yet its full potential remains to be attained. We present herein an integrated method based on high throughput DFT computations validated with experiments that has allowed us to identify tellurium on antimony sites as a much more effective dopant than the formerly used nickel on cobalt sites. By carrying out a systematic adjustment optimization of the experimental parameters, we achieve a power factor as high as 2.7 mW m−1 K−2 at 543 K, which is maintained up to 730 K. Objective: Fetal fibronectin bedside testing has been proposed as a diagnostic tool for the accurate diagnosis of preterm labor. The study objective was to determine whether the introduction of routine fetal fibronectin bedside testing affected costs and transfer rates from referral district hospitals to a tertiary obstetric hospital, as well as direct admissions to a tertiary referral hospital.Study Design: We performed an 18-month prospective audit of fetal fibronectin use in 9 referral hospitals and one university maternal-fetal medicine unit. Data collected were delivery details and cervical dilatation at admission. Cost savings in terms of transport costs for patients with a negative fetal fibronectin result who were not transferred or admitted to the tertiary center were calculated for interhospital transfer (road ambulance or fixed-wing retrieval).Results: One hundred fifty-one patients had a presumptive diagnosis of threatened preterm labor. Forty-five patients had a positive fetal fibronectin result and 106 had a negative fetal fibronectin result (3 with cervical dilatation >/=3 cm). Eleven (24%) patients with a positive fetal fibronectin result were delivered within 7 days, and 5 (5%) with a negative fetal fibronectin result were delivered within 7 days. One patient was delivered at 34 weeks, and the remaining patients were delivered at or after 36 weeks' gestation. All 3 patients with negative fetal fibronectin results with cervical dilatation of >/=3 cm were delivered within 5 days, leaving 2 (1.9%) patients (with closed cervices and negative fetal fibronectin results) being delivered 5 days after the fetal fibronectin testing. Ninety percent of the patients admitted to a referral hospital with threatened preterm labor who had a negative fetal fibronectin result were not transferred; thus an unnecessary transfer was avoided, with cost savings ranging from $30,297 for road and fixed-wing transport.Conclusion: A negative fetal fibronectin result is not helpful if cervical dilatation is present, and these patients should be treated as having a high risk of preterm delivery. The use of a fetal fibronectin test was associated with a 90% reduction in maternal transfer and can substantially reduce the costs and inconvenience associated with unnecessary transfer. To test which, if any, of the major milk precursors can elicit a rapid change in the rate of mammary blood flow (MBF) and to define the time course and magnitude of such changes, 4 lactating cows were infused with glucose, amino acids, or triacylglycerol into the external iliac artery feeding one udder half while iliac plasma flow (IPF) was monitored continuously by dye dilution. Adenosine and saline were infused as positive and negative controls, respectively, and insulin was infused to characterize the response to a centrally produced anabolic hormone. To test the roles of cyclooxygenase, NO synthase and ATP-sensitive K (KATP) channels in nutrient-mediated changes in blood flow, their respective inhibitors--indomethacin, Nω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester hydrochloride (L-NAME), and glibenclamide--were infused simultaneously with glucose. Each day, 1 infusate was given twice to each cow, over a 20-min period each time, separated by a 20-min washout period. In addition, each treatment protocol was administered on 2 separate days. A 73% increase in IPF during adenosine infusion showed that the mammary vasodilatory response was quadratic in time, with most changes occurring in the first 5 min. Glucose infusion decreased IPF by 9% in a quadratic manner, most rapidly in the first 5 min, indicating that a feedback mechanism of local blood flow control, likely through adenosine release, was operative in the mammary vas-culature. Amino acid infusion increased IPF 9% in a linear manner, suggesting that mammary ATP utilization was stimulated more than ATP production. This could reflect a stimulation of protein synthesis. Triacylglycerol only tended to decrease IPF and insulin did not affect IPF. A lack of IPF response to glibenclamide indicates that KATP channels are not involved in MBF regulation. Indomethacin and L-NAME both depressed IPF. In the presence of indomethacin, glucose infusion caused a quadratic 9% increase in IPF. Indomethacin is an inhibitor of mitochondrial function, so the glucose-induced increase in IPF was interpreted as feedback on mammary adenosine release from an anabolic response to glucose. Because NO synthase was not inhibited during indomethacin infusion, the feedback system is postulated to act through endothelial NO synthase. In the presence of L-NAME, glucose infusion had no effect on IPF, indicating that endothelial cyclooxygenase is not involved in glucose-induced changes in MBF. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report on new optical emission line observations toward the northern part of the Magellanic Stream. Using the Wisconsin H-Alpha Mapper (WHAM), we have detected Ha emission toward 17 directions spread across 50° of the Stream. We find strong variation in the Ha surface brightness with no significant correlation with Magellanic longitude. We compare our data with HI observations and briefly discuss the implications for the physical conditions of the Stream. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hα emission from neutral halo clouds probes the radiation and hydrodynamic conditions in the halo. Armed with such measurements, we can explore how radiation escapes from the Galactic plane and how infalling gas can survive a trip through the halo. The Wisconsin H-Alpha Mapper (WHAM) is one of the most sensitive instruments for detecting and mapping optical emission from the ISM. Here, we present recent results exploring the ionization of two infalling high-velocity complexes. First, we report on our progress mapping Hα emission covering the full extent of Complex A. Intensities are faint (100 mR; EM 0.2 pc cm-6) but correlate on the sky and in velocity with 21-cm emission. Second, we explore the ionized component of some Anti-Center Complex clouds studied by Peek et al. (2007) that show dynamic shaping from interaction with the Galactic halo. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Thick layers of warm, low density ionized hydrogen (I. e., the warm ionized medium or WIM) in spiral galaxies provide direct evidence for an interaction between the disk and halo. The wide-spread ionization implies that a significant fraction of the Lyman continuum photons from O stars, produced primarily in isolated star forming regions near the midplane and often surrounded by opaque clouds of neutral hydrogen, is somehow able to propagate large distances through the disk and into the halo. Moreover, even though O stars are the source of the ionization, the temperature and ionization state of the WIM differ significantly from what is observed in the classical O star H n regions. Therefore, the existence of the WIM and observations of its properties provide information about the structure of the interstellax medium and the transport of energy away from the midplane as well as place significant constraints on models. ABSTRACT We report on the discovery of a new Galactic supershell, GSH 006−15+7, from the Galactic All-Sky Survey data. Observed and derived properties are presented, and we find that GSH 006−15+7 is one of the nearest physically large supershells known, with dimensions of ∼780 × 520 pc at a distance of ∼ 1.5 kpc. The shell wall appears in H i emission at b≲−65 and in H i self-absorption (H iSA) at b≳−65. We use this feature along with H iSA diagnostics to estimate an optical depth of τ∼ 3, a spin temperature of ∼40 K and a swept-up mass of M∼ 3 × 106 M⊙. We also investigate the origin of GSH 006−15+7, assessing the energy contribution of candidate powering sources and finding evidence in favour of a formation energy of ∼1052 erg. The aims of this study were firstly to examine if corticotrophin-releasing hormone (CRH) concentrations in maternal plasma were significantly elevated in Chinese pregnancies complicated by pre-eclampsia, secondly to assess if this elevation could be detected in the mid-trimester before onset of clinical signs of the disease, and thirdly to evaluate the performance of using maternal CRH and/or alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) concentrations in the mid-trimester for prediction of pre-eclampsia. The first part of this study was tested in a cohort of 39 subjects. The CRH concentrations were significantly elevated in pregnant women complicated by pre-eclampsia. The second and third parts of the study involved a different cohort of 1021 subjects. Both CRH and AFP concentrations in the mid-trimester were significantly elevated in those who subsequently developed pre-eclampsia. However, when used for prediction of pre-eclampsia, neither the CRH nor AFP concentrations alone in the mid-trimester had strong predictive value. Although the combination of both tests improved the detection rate compared to the use of CRH alone, the small increase in the likelihood ratio from 1.9 to 2.6 did not suggest that the combination would be of great clinical value. Objective: We assessed the ability of maternal plasma corticotropin-releasing hormone measurements to predict preterm delivery in the setting of a pilot study comparing transdermal glyceryl trinitrate with standard beta-mimetic therapy for preterm labor and to determine the effect of these tocolytics on maternal plasma corticotropin-releasing hormone concentrations.Study Design: Twenty-six consecutive patients with preterm labor were randomized to tocolytic treatment with transdermal glyceryl trinitrate (n=13) or intravenous albuterol (n=13).Results: Plasma corticotropin-releasing hormone immunoreactivity levels were higher in women who were delivered within 7 days (41.4+/-13.5 pmol/L) than in those continuing to term (14.2+/-2.4 pmol/L, p=0.011) and were not altered by treatment. Two women in each of the treatment groups delivered within 7 days of the initiation of treatment, two women in the glyceryl trinitrate group were changed to albuterol because of persistence of contractions. Glyceryl trinitrate treatment was associated with significantly fewer maternal side effects. Neither treatment altered umbilical artery Doppler ultrasonographic findings.Conclusion: Transdermal glyceryl trinitrate is better tolerated than intravenous albuterol but may be no more efficacious than albuterol for the treatment of preterm labor. The relationship between the changes in liver pathology and the production of interleukin (IL)-1α, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) by intrahepatic mononuclear cells was studied in rats fed alcohol and subsequently exposed to lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Rats were fed 40% ethanol in drinking water, whereas control rats were provided with a chow diet with isocaloric or 2% sucrose drinking solutions for up to 20 weeks. Decreased IL-1α and TNF-α production in 24-hr culture supernatants of mononuclear cells isolated from liver perfusate was detected while IL-6 remained unchanged over 20 weeks. When animals were injected with LPS (1.0 μg/kg body weight), there was a 5-fold rise in ALT levels in the ethanol-fed group, but not in control groups. Increased IL-6 and TNF-α levels in the serum and supernatant of cultured intrahepatic mononuclear cells stimulated with or without LPS or concanavalin A was observed. There was a correlation between levels of ALT and TNF-α, but not IL-6. T cells and Kupffer cells were the major source of TNF-α in culture supernatants of hepatic perfusate mononuclear cells from ethanol-consuming rats injected LPS. In addition, pathological liver injury was evident, which suggests a pathogenic role for TNF-α in alcohol-induced liver disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effects of prostaglandins E1, E2, F2α, prostacyclin, and the thromboxane A2-mimic U46619 were investigated on isolated human oesophageal submucosal veins from the oesophageal body and the oesophagogastric junction. U46619 most potently, but also PGF2α produced venocontraction without differences between preparations from the oesophageal body and the oesophagogastric junction. PGE1 and prostacyclin caused relaxation of vessels precontracted with U46619 (10-9 M). PGE2 induced either contraction or relaxation, but biphasic effects in the same vessel segment were not seen. Indomethacin 10-6 M inhibited the contractile responses to both noradrenaline and K+ (124 mM), suggesting that the agonists induced synthesis or release of vasoconstrictor prostanoids. We review the observational evidence that the warm ionized medium (WIM) is a major and physically distinct component of the Galactic interstellar medium. Although up to ~ 20% of the faint, high-latitude Hα emission in the Milky Way may be scattered light emitted in midplane Hii regions, recent scattered light models do not effectively challenge the well-established properties of the WIM. Accurate emission line fluxes from planetary nebulae (PNe) provide important constraints on the nature of the final phases of stellar evolution. Large, evolved PNe may trace the latest stages of PN evolution, where material from the AGB wind is returned to the interstellar medium. However, the low surface brightness and spatially extended emission of large PNe have made accurate measurements of line fluxes difficult with traditional long-slit spectroscopic techniques. Furthermore, distinguishing these nebulae from H II regions, supernova remnants, or interstellar gas ionized by a hot, evolved stellar core can be challenging. Here, we report on an ongoing survey of large Galactic PNe ($r > 5^\prime$) with the Wisconsin H-Alpha Mapper (WHAM), a Fabry-Perot spectrograph designed to detect faint diffuse optical emission lines with high sensitivity and spectral resolution. Our sample includes newly revealed $H\alpha$ enhancements from the AAO/UKST and WHAM $H\alpha$ surveys of Parker et al. and Haffner et al. We present accurate emission line fluxes of $H\alpha$, [N II]$\lambda$6583, and [O III]$\lambda$5007, and compare our data to other measurements. Lattice defects such as vacancies, voids and dislocations are inevitably present in any material of technological interest. In this work, non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations are conducted to investigate how the monatomic vacancies and nanovoids influence the lattice thermal conductivity of silicon. The results show a clear non-linear decrease of the thermal conductivity with increasing defect volume fraction. Furthermore, it is found that for a given volume fraction of defects, a random distribution shows a lower lattice thermal conductivity. To develop a fundamental understanding of these observations, the spectral energy densities for all phonon branches obtained from 2D Fourier transformations of the atomic trajectories are analyzed. This yields the mean phonon group velocities and relaxation times, which are the main physical quantities contributing to the lattice thermal conductivity. Our analysis reveals that the phonon relaxation time is the most important parameter for describing the degrading of the thermal transport behavior in the defected structures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
