Flipped learning has become a popular blended learning approach in higher education and is now being adopted in medical schools across Australia and internationally. There are a number of principal educational justifications for the introduction of this approach, primarily, that it fosters deeper student learning through active engagement in the classroom. As a pedagogical intervention however, what do the various stakeholders think about its introduction? This paper explores reactions to implementation of a flipped learning approach to pre-clinical medical education in a regional Victorian medical course, via a mixed method approach. A range of quantitative and qualitative data was collected concerning the implementation, including a student survey, student focus groups, a staff survey for both academic and professional staff members involved in the implementation of the approach, and an independent student-driven social media questionnaire conducted in the second year post implementation survey. These data provide critical feedback for refinement of the flipped learning approach, including more robust student and faculty development and support during implementation of this pedagogy. Taken together, our results provide a unique perspective of the introduction of the flipped approach through different stakeholder lenses, and over time.

Introduction: Differential attainment is a well‐known phenomenon in medical education. Despite a strong impetus for institutions and researchers to move away from a 'student deficit model' when exploring the attainment gap, little attention has been given to understanding the experiences of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) medical students. Informed by the social construction of learning theory, this is the first national study to explore how multiple dimensions of the medical school environment impact academic performance of BAME undergraduate medical students across the UK. Methods: Using a sequential explanatory mixed‐methods approach, the authors conducted a survey and facilitated three focus groups across medical schools in the UK between 2020–2021. Participants self‐identified as being from BAME backgrounds. Quantitative analyses included descriptive statistics and bivariate analyses. Qualitative data were analysed using thematic analysis, subsequently identifying inductive themes. Results: Three hundred sixty‐two respondents completed the Phase 1 survey, and 17 participants participated in the Phase 2 focus groups. Although both survey and focus group participants identified facilitators to learning such as supportive relationships, students reported facing numerous barriers that they felt impeded their learning and performance. These barriers included limited access to educational resources, and undiversified curricula and medical school populations. Students also described both experiencing and witnessing various forms of racism throughout their educational journeys. Discussion: Students encountered various difficulties throughout their medical training that they felt impacted their learning and performance. This study offers novel insights into the experiences of BAME students and builds upon previous research. It also reveals the pervasive nature of racism within medical schools, highlighting the urgent need for institutional changes. Educators and institutions must go beyond merely recognising these barriers and facilitators; they must proactively innovate and adapt. In doing so, they pave the way for inclusive learning environments that truly foster a sense of belonging for BAME students. The first harvest of Humulus lupulus (var. Cascade) in Brazil in 2016 originated as an aromatic hop that nowadays is gaining attention from the brewery industry. However, the chemical composition and the properties of this hop have not been well documented to date. In this study, the chemical profile of the phenolic compounds and essential oils of Cascade hops produced in Brazil (BH) and the USA (UH) was determined. The major phenolic compounds identified by LC-ESI-MS-MS in BH and UH were protocatechuic acid, isoquercitrin, and ferulic acid (4.18–11.39; 2.44–4.90; and 1.45–4.48 mg 100 g−1, respectively). The profile of essential oils was shown to differ between the two samples. The compounds trans-β-farnesene (20.60%), β-selinene (18.78%), myrcene (16.57%), and α-selinene (16.22%) were the main compounds in the BH essential oil, while the essential oil of UH showed a high content of α-humulene (35.35%), myrcene (22.35%), β-caryophyllene (12.81%), and trans-β-farnesene (10.59%). A higher antioxidant activity (by DPPH and ABTS) was observed for hop extracts when compared to the essential oils. The results indicated that the Brazilian hop sample analyzed had higher radical scavenging when compared to an American hop sample (associated with its bioactive compound composition). The Cascade hop from Brazil appears to be a high-quality raw material showing significant potential for future industrial applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article discusses the youth perspectives on teaching practices and the use of digital technologies in the implementation of the new syllabus resulting from the reform of the high school (Law No. 13.415/2017). To this end, this paper is based on the data collected from the student perspective on the use of technologies as a didactic-pedagogical resource in high school classes provided by the research report "Shall we talk about high school? Young students and their perceptions of the syllabus in Marist Brazil", launched in 2020. The study covered young people from schools present in 18 Brazilian states, being developed in two stages: 1) Quantitative exploratory phase, with the participation of 3089 young respondents to a self-administered online questionnaire; 2) Qualitative phase, with the participation of 80 young people, organized into 10 focus groups in different regions of the country. It is possible to affirm that considering the perceptions and conceptions of young high school students, in the development of the curricular reform of that segment will contribute to pedagogical practices, which include technologies, as a possibility of promoting educational spaces and times that aim at (re)constructions, (re)elaborations, (new) meanings for the autonomy of learning and being in the world. Summary: Bioactive compounds from Brazilian hop (Humulus lupulus L.) cultivars were extracted by ultrasound and their phenolic profile compared with commercial hop from the USA. The most effective extraction conditions (solution of ethanol 49%, at 52 °C and a solid/liquid ratio of 1 g per 34 mL) for the total phenolic compounds (TPC) were determined using a Central Composite Rotatable Design. The Brazilian hop showed higher content of TPC (33.93 ± 0.67 mg GAE g−1), total flavonoids (54.47 ± 0.10 mg QE g−1) and higher antioxidant activity (ABTS: EC50 21.29 ± 1.36 μL mL−1; DPPH: EC50 3.91 ± 0.17 μL mL−1) when compared with the USA hop. The main phenolic compounds present in the extracts were the flavonoids isoquercitrin and quercetin. The antioxidant properties of the Brazilian hop extract had not been reported yet in the literature for this raw material, thus showing potential to be incorporated in polymeric films used as active packaging. Objective: To analyze of the use of information and communication technologies in health by Brazilian nurses, based on the indicators published in the ICT Health reports. Methods: study of secondary data obtained from the ICT Health database. Seven related variables were selected: Yes. Results: There were no significant variations on the impact of computer or internet use while working, most professionals reported that there was no increase or decrease in their workload. However, over the years nurses perceive positive impacts regarding the use or implementation of electronic systems. Conclusion: The indicators demonstrate that the use of information and communication technologies has evolved in Brazilian health institutions, from the nurses' point of view. Objective: To assess the feasibility and safety of a physiotherapy protocol applied to pregnant women with preeclampsia.Methods: Randomized, controlled, single-blind feasibility study, with 24 hospitalized pregnant women with preeclampsia. The intervention group received one session of the physiotherapy. The control group remained under the routine care of the hospital. The primary outcomes were Doppler velocimetry, cardiotocography, and maternal-fetal hemodynamics. Secondary outcomes were pain and anxiety assessed before and after the interventions. A mixed effects linear regression model was used, and the data were compared with the level of significance at 5%.Results: The baseline characteristics of the participants were homogeneous between groups. Resistance index of the Middle Cerebral Artery (MAC) and Umbilical Artery (UA) and cardiotocography did not change significantly. The systolic blood pressure (SBP) increased 4.90 mmHg in the control group and 0.22 mmHg in the intervention group. The diastolic blood pressure (DBP) increased 1.34 mmHg in the control group and decreased 0.40 mmHg in the intervention group. The middle bood pressure (MBP) increased 4.66 mmHg in the control group while there was a decrease of 0.09 mmHg in the intervention group, without statistical difference. Heart rate (HR) decreased 0.94 bpm in the control group; whereas, in the intervention group, there was an increase of 6.30 bpm. The pain reduced clinically 2 points after the intervention. The anxiety reduced clinically in both the groups (-1.26 in the intervention group and -2.17 in the control group).Conclusion: The protocol applied in the intervention group is feasible and safe for both mother and fetus. Both groups showed clinical reduction in the levels of anxiety; whereas, pain was clinically reduced in the intervention group. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction Preeclampsia (PE) is a disease with severe complications for the mother and neonate and amid all aspects related to the development of the disease, we highlight the angiogenic biomarkers. These markers are increasingly being studied to help in understanding the pathophysiology of PE, and of these markers is the PDGF AA, a protein directly involved in cell proliferation and migration of placental vasculogenesis. Objective This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of PDGF AA as a factor in PE prediction compared to serum biomarker levels in pregnant women who developed the disease and in healthy pregnant women. Methods This study is a case-control linked to a cohort, which included the participation of 1.417 pregnant women with gestational age between 20 and 25 weeks, who were interviewed and had blood collected for analysis before the development of the disease. Through interviews and medical record analysis (after delivery), we selected 30 women who had a confirmed diagnosis of preeclampsia and 90 healthy pregnant women. The dosage of PDGF AA was made to these participants and enabled us to analyze and compare the plasma concentration of this biomarker in healthy pregnant women and in women who developed preeclampsia. For the analysis of quantitative variables was used analysis of variance (ANOVA) and where this assumption was not observed, logarithmic transformations in the response variable were used. Results We found no significant difference in the age of pregnant women, BMI, gestational age and heart rate. The values of the comparison between the two groups showed a significant difference in systolic blood pressure ( p = 0.001) and diastolic ( p < 0.001) and mean pressure ( p < 0.001), where we found that the lowest values of these variables are of pregnant women not desenvoleram disease. The concentration of PDGF AA in pregnant women who developed PE subsequently was 257.7 ± 167.7 and in healthy patients was 337.80 ± 305.1 ( p = 0.48), no significant difference. Conclusion We conclude that serum levels of PDGF AA is not effective as a predictor of preeclampsia, since the difference observed between healthy pregnant women and pregnant women who developed the disease is not significant. Objectives Pre-eclampsia, that affects 2–3% of pregnancies worldwide and develops after the twenty week of pregnancy, is characterized by increased blood pressure and proteinuria. When the worsening of the clinical frame occurs, the admission of these women, which can lead to a change in quality of life is recommended. To evaluate the quality of life of women with preeclampsia and healthy pregnant women hospitalized and compare them with each other, for the WHOQOL-Brev. Methods This was a case-control study. 58 patients were recruited, 28 with preeclampsia (blood pressure > 140 × 90 mmHg and 24-h proteinuria 300 mg) and 30 healthy. All responded to the quality of life WHOQOL-Brev questionnaire divided into four physical, psychological, social and environmental aspects. Results When comparing the clinical data of pregnant women, using the Mann–Whitney statistical difference was observed in the variables age p < 0.01 and gestational age p < 0.01. However when the variables come together no difference was observed. The same was observed when comparing the pregnant women in different aspects contained in the quality of life questionnaire. Conclusions The study showed that there was no statistical difference between groups in quality of life. The mean values between the two groups are equivalent; this can be explained because the PE pregnant women were hospitalized and receive multidisciplinary care. Disclosures M.S. Machado: None. T.V. Introduction Preeclampsia is a hypertensive disorder of pregnancy specific, its pathophysiology is not fully understood, however placental ischemia is considered a key factor for the development of the disease. This inadequate vascularization may be related to changes in the concentration of angiogenic factors in the maternal circulation. Among them angiopoietin 1 (Ang-1) and angiopoietin-2 (Ang-2) and act during angiogenesis. Objective To investigate the predictive ability of Ang-1 and Ang-2 in pregnant women with preeclampsia. Patients and methods This is a case-control study linked to a prospective cohort of pregnant women, with mean gestational age of 23 weeks, consisting of 90 healthy pregnant women (GS) and 30 pregnant women with preeclampsia (PE). Plasma concentrations of Ang-1 and Ang-2 were determined using the ELISA method. Results In the comparison of Ang-1 concentrations between GS and PE there was no statistical difference between the groups ( P = 0.604) the same was observed for Ang-2 ( P = 0919). Regarding the reason Ang-1/Ang-2, also no statistical difference ( P = 0.282). The predictive ability of the biomarkers was evaluated by ROC curve and the area under the curve for Ang-1, Ang-2 and Ang-1 ratio/Ang-2 were 0.47, 0.50 and 0.56 respectively. Conclusion Our study found no significant difference in the concentrations of Ang-1 and Ang-2 compared the PE group with the control group. Introduction Dysfunction of l -arginine/NO endothelial system is one of the factors that contribute to preeclampsia development. The supplementation with l -arginine could be used as treatment and/or prevention for this disorder. Objective To supplement pregnant women with preeclampsia and determine whether endogenous biomarkers can indicate which pregnant women will respond or not supplementation with l -arginine. Patients and methods We analyzed 56 pregnant women diagnosed with preeclampsia, divided into two groups 39 without supplementation and 17 who underwent supplementation with 3 g l -arginine orally for 10 days. Results The concentrations of the inflammation markers IL-6 and CRP were lower at the beginning of the supplementation when compared with the end of supplementation IL-6 (4.08 ± 3.74 vs. 10.67 ± 9.03, P = 0,03); PCR (5.52 ± 2.72 vs. 7.00 ± 3.37, P = 0.04). For other biomarkers analyzed we did not observe significant changes or the comparison between groups (sVCAM: P = 0.74; ADMA: P = 0.76; endoglin: P = 0 28; CD40: P = 0.22 and sFlt-1: P = .35) or between the beginning and the end of supplementation (sVCAM: P = 0.53; ADMA: P = 0.89; endoglin: P = 0.15; CD40: P = 0.53 and sFlt-1: P = 0.55). Conclusion The quantification of biomarkers showed that the participants were not responsive to supplementation with l -arginine since there was no change in the concentration thereof, or in the clinical and laboratory findings. Objectives Pregnant women with preeclampsia, due to the complexity of the clinical frame remains at rest and such conduct leads to muscle discomfort, but no studies proving the safety and effectiveness of physical therapy protocols to improve such discomforts. To evaluate the influence of a physical therapy protocol applied in pregnant women with preeclampsia in relation to maternal and fetal hemodynamics Methods The women were randomized to the physiotherapy group or control group, both with conducting monitoring breast through pressure curve and measure heart rate and fetal monitoring with Doppler velocimetry. The physiotherapy group had the physiotherapy exercise protocol and received guidance on appropriate to stay in bed postures and the control group received only the guidelines. Results Data were analyzed using linear regression model with mixed effects (random and fixed effects). The data on the clinical data of the patients (age, gestational age, parity, BMI) and laboratory tests (24-h proteinuria, 24-h diuresis, creatinine, uric acid, urea, hemoglobin, bilirubin, sodium and potassium) showed no difference between groups. The results of maternal and fetal hemodynamics improved, however these changes are not clinically significant. Conclusions We can conclude that physiotherapy protocol we used is safe for both the mother and the fetus. Objectives Recent studies have shown that inadequate vascularization of the placenta may be caused by changes in the concentration of anti-angiogenic and pro-angiogenic factors like sFlt-1 and PlGF in maternal circulation indicating that they play an important role in the pathophysiology of preeclampsia. This study aimed evaluate the potential of sFlt-1 and PlGF as predictors of preeclampsia. Methods We studied 50 healthy pregnant women (HP) and 30 pregnant women with preeclampsia (PE) with a mean gestational age of 23 weeks. The measurements of concentrations of sFlt-1 and PlGF were determined using the ELISA method. Results When compared the concentrations of sFlt-1 to HP (135.08 pg/ml ± 76.4) and PE (186.55 pg/ml ± 182.4) no statistical difference between groups was observed p = 0.40. The concentrations of PlGF were greater in HP (483.17 pg/ml ± 381.7) compared to PE group (363.97 pg/ml ± 332.5), p = 0.01. Pulsatility index uterine artery average (right and left) was higher in the PE then in GS (1.05 ± 0.4 vs. 0.86 ± 0.4) p = 0.02 as expected pressure levels in the PE group were higher and the birth weight was lower in the PE group compared with the GS group. Conclusions Our study showed that despite not having a significant difference, the concentrations of sFlt-1 levels were higher in women from the PE group, the concentrations of PlGF were already lower in the PE group compared the HP, confirming that the variation in concentrations of factors anti-angionic and pro-angiogenic factors are involved in the pathophysiology of preeclampsia.
