In acoustics, it is known that, for a given response signal at an arbitrary location, reciprocity and time reversal (TR) can be used to focus high levels of acoustic energy at that position. In solid media, elastic waves generally induce different disturbances in three directions. In this paper, both experimental and numerical wave propagation results for solid materials demonstrate the ability to use a scalar source, a three component detector and the reciprocal TR process to selectively focus each of the different vector components, either individually or collectively. The principle is explained from an analytical point of view. The numerical and experimental study demonstrates excellent temporal and spatial focalization. Artificial neural network (ANN) approach has been applied to estimate the density functional theory (DFT) energy with large basis set using lower-level energy values and molecular descriptors. A total of 208 different molecules were used for the ANN training, cross validation, and testing by applying BLYP, B3LYP, and BMK density functionals. Hartree–Fock results were reported for comparison. Furthermore, constitutional molecular descriptor (CD) and quantum-chemical molecular descriptor (QD) were used for building the calibration model. The neural network structure optimization, leading to four to five hidden neurons, was also carried out. The usage of several low-level energy values was found to greatly reduce the prediction error. An expected error, mean absolute deviation, for ANN approximation to DFT energies was 0.6±0.2 kcal mol-1. In addition, the comparison of the different density functionals with the basis sets and the comparison of multiple linear regression results were also provided. The CDs were found to overcome limitation of the QD. Furthermore, the effective ANN model for DFT/6-311G(3df,3pd) and DFT/6-311G(2df,2pd) energy estimation was developed, and the benchmark results were provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vibrational and rotational spectra of liquid para-H2 at temperature T=14–26 K and of solid at T=6–13 K have been obtained using coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering technique. The vibrational frequency in the liquid increases with temperature by about 2 cm-1 and the shift scales with the square of the sample’s density. An extrapolation of the vibrational frequency in the metastable para-H2 liquid below the freezing point is discussed. The results indicate that the vibron hopping between the molecules is active in the liquid, similar to that previously found in the solid. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A simple model is presented for treating local imaginary frequencies that are important in the study of quantum effects in chemical reactions and various dynamical processes in molecular liquids. It significantly extends the range of accuracy of conventional local harmonic approximations (LHAs) used in the linearized semiclassical initial value representation/classical Wigner approximation for real time correlation functions. The key idea is realizing that a local Gaussian approximation (LGA) for the momentum distribution (from the Wigner function involving the Boltzmann operator) can be a good approximation even when a LHA for the potential energy surface fails. The model is applied here to two examples where imaginary frequencies play a significant role: the chemical reaction rate for a linear model of the H+H2 reaction and an analogous asymmetric barrier—a case where the imaginary frequency of the barrier dominates the process—and for momentum autocorrelation functions in liquid para-hydrogen at two thermal state points (25 and 14 K under nearly zero external pressure). We measured acoustic transmissions through subwavelength hole arrays fabricated on brass plates at normal and oblique incidence. It is found experimentally that the transmission phenomena for the hole array in thin plate case are analogous to the previously observed enhanced transmission of electromagnetic waves [Ebbesen et al., Nature (London) 391, 667 (1998)]. While for the hole array in thick plate case, the transmission peaks of acoustic wave occur well below Wood’s anomalies, and the spectrum characteristics reveal a Fabry–Pérot-like resonance. We consider the infinite hierarchy of local collective rearrangements on bond networks that preserves the valency of each atom and explicitly enumerate those involving 4, 5, and 6 particles. The only 4-particle rearrangement is identical to the Wooten-Winer-Weaire (WWW) mechanism. Each rearrangement mechanism is applied in a Monte Carlo (MC) algorithm in order to determine the rate at which it equilibrate a network and relax the structure at equilibrium. At low temperature the 4-particle mechanism provides the fastest relaxation rate but we find that there is a crossover with increasing temperature to 5-particle mechanisms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The authors present a new method for the computation of vibrationally resolved optical spectra of large molecules, including the Duschinsky rotation of the normal modes and the effect of thermal excitation. The method automatically selects the relevant vibronic contributions to the spectrum, independently of their frequency, and it is able to provide fully converged spectra with moderate computational times, both in vacuo and in solution. By describing the electronic states in the frame of the density functional theory and its time-dependent extension, they computed the room temperature absorption spectra of coumarin C153 and trans-stilbene in cyclohexane and the phosphorescence spectrum of porphyrazine in gas phase, showing that the method is fast and efficient. The comparison with experiment for trans-stilbene and coumarin C153 is very satisfactory, confirming the progress made toward a reliable method for the computation and interpretation for the optical spectra of large molecules. The ionization of a beam of H2 Rydberg molecules in collision with a metal surface (evaporated Au or Al) is studied. The Rydberg states are excited in an ultraviolet–vacuum ultraviolet double-resonant process and are state selected with a core rotational quantum number N+=0 or 2 and principal quantum numbers n=17–22 (N+=2) or n=41–45 (N+=0). It is found that the N+=0 states behave in a very similar manner to previous studies with atomic xenon Rydberg states, the distance of ionization from the surface scaling with n2. The N+=2 states, however, undergo a process of surface-induced rotational autoionization in which the core rotational energy transfers to the Rydberg electron. In this case the ionization distance scales approximately with ν02, the effective principal quantum number with respect to the adiabatic threshold. This process illustrates the close similarity between field ionization in the gas phase and the surface ionization process which is induced by the field due to image charges in the metal surface. The surface ionization rate is enhanced at certain specific values of the field, which is applied in the time interval between excitation and surface interaction. It is proposed here that these fields correspond to level crossings between the N+=0 and N+=2 Stark manifolds. The population of individual states of the N+=2, n=18 Stark manifold in the presence of a field shows that the surface-induced rotational autoionization is more facile for the blueshifted states, whose wave function is oriented away from the surface, than for the redshifted states. The observed processes appear to show little dependence on the chemical nature of the metallic surface, but a significant change occurs when the surface roughness becomes comparable to the Rydberg orbit dimensions. This paper presents the propagation of waves along a one-dimensional “diatomic” chain made up to welded spheres, i.e., with two steel spheres of different diameters alternating. First, a theoretical analysis is presented, which gives the vibration modes of an infinite chain, leading to two low-frequency branches, separated by a band gap. A theoretical analysis is then performed on a finite chain, containing an even or an odd number of spheres. Depending on the parity of the number of spheres in the finite chain and on the ratio between the masses of the spheres, it points out that localized modes may appear in the band gap. The theoretical results have been validated by a comparison between numerical and experimental results. We report on the interaction between photogenerated electron-hole pairs and surface acoustic waves (SAW) in GaN films grown on sapphire substrates. The spatial separation of photogenerated carriers by the piezoelectric field of the SAW is evidenced by the quenching of the photoluminescence (PL) intensity. The quenching levels in GaN are significantly smaller than those measured in GaAs under similar conditions. The latter is attributed to the lower exciton ionization efficiency and carrier separation probabilities mediated by the piezoelectric effect. The PL spectra also evidence energy shifts and broadenings of the electronic transitions, which are attributed to the band gap modulation by the SAW strain field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In living cells, molecular motors create activity that enhances the diffusion of particles throughout the cytoplasm, and not just ones attached to the motors. We demonstrate initial steps toward creating artificial cells that mimic this phenomenon. Our system consists of active, Pt-coated Janus particles and passive tracers confined to emulsion droplets. We track the motion of both the active particles and passive tracers in a hydrogen peroxide solution, which serves as the fuel to drive the motion. We first show that correcting for bulk translational and rotational motion of the droplets induced by bubble formation is necessary to accurately track the particles. After drift correction, we find that the active particles show enhanced diffusion in the interior of the droplets and are not captured by the droplet interface. At the particle and hydrogen peroxide concentrations we use, we observe little coupling between the active and passive particles. We discuss the possible reasons for lack of coupling and describe ways to improve the system to more effectively mimic cytoplasmic activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigate theoretically subwavelength imaging by acoustic metamaterial slabs immersed in the liquid matrix. A near-field subwavelength image formed by evanescent waves is achieved by a designed metamaterial slab with negative mass density and positive modulus. A subwavelength real image is achieved by a designed metamaterial slab with simultaneously negative mass density and modulus. The systematics of the enigmatic and rather uncommon species of Sea Hayward and Cybdelis Boisduval is assessed through morphological and molecular analyses. The aim of this paper is three‐fold: (i) to ascertain the phylogenetic position of Sea and Cybdelis in Biblidinae; (ii) to determine the evolutionary relationships among species of Sea and Cybdelis; and (iii) to review the taxonomy of Sea and Cybdelis. The result of the molecular analysis recovers Sea sister to Cybdelis, and this clade sister to Eubagina (sensu Lamas,), rendering Epicaliina (sensu Lamas,) paraphyletic. A new tribe, Cybdelini trib.n. is erected to include Sea and Cybdelis; the other genera formerly included in Epicaliina (sensu Lamas,), Eunica Hübner and Sevenia Koçak are assigned to Eunicini trib.rest., and the remaining genera of Biblidinae to other previously recognized tribes, similar to those implicitly proposed by Wahlberg et al. (). The morphological analysis recovers similar results and the following relationships among species of Cybdelis: C. phaesyla (Hübner) (C. boliviana Salvin (C. mnasylus Doubleday (C. petronita Burmeister stat.rest. + C. thrasylla C. Felder & R. Felder stat.rest.))). Sea and Cybdelis are recognized as distinct genera; a new subspecies, S. sophronia jenkinsi Dias, Siewert & Freitas ssp.n., distributed from Venezuela to Bolivia along the Andes eastern foothills, is described; and C. petronita and C. thrasylla are accepted as valid species. Lectotypes for C. boliviana, C. peruviana Staudinger, C. mnasylus, C. thrasylla, C. petronita and C. mnasylus var. meridionalis Hall and a neotype for Vanessa sophronia Godart are designated. Background: Chemosensory proteins are a family of insect-specific chemical sensors that sense specific chemical cues and regulate insect behavior. Chemosensory proteins have been identified and analyzed in many insect species, such as Drosophila melanogaster, Bactrocera dorsalis and Calliphora stygia. This research has revealed that these proteins play a crucial role in insect orientation, predation and oviposition. However, little is known about the chemosensory proteins of Chlorops oryzae, a major pest of rice crops throughout Asia. Results: Comparative transcription analysis of the genes of Chlorops oryzae larvae, pupae and adults identified a total of 104 chemosensory genes, including 25 odorant receptors (ORs), 26 odorant-binding proteins (OBPs), 19 ionotropic receptors (IRs), 23 gustatory receptors (GRs) and 11 sensory neuron membrane proteins (SNMPs). The sequences of these candidate chemosensory genes were confirmed and used to construct phylogenetic trees. Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) confirmed that the expression of candidate OR genes in different developmental stages was consistent with the fragments per kilobase per million fragments (FPKM) values of differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Conclusions: The identification of chemosensory genes in C. oryzae provides a foundation for the investigation of the function of chemosensory proteins in this species, which, in turn, could allow the development of new, improved methods of controlling this pest. Superelastic shape memory alloys (SMAs) are smart materials that can recover 6–8% elastic strains due to their phase transformation. SMAs also possess unique characteristics such as good energy dissipation, excellent re-centering capabilities and corrosion resistance. Recent studies have incorporated the use of superelastic SMA fibers in cementitious composites to achieve re-centering and crack-closing capabilities. Consequently, it is important to investigate the performance of fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) members under cyclic loading. This study investigates the use of hybrid steel/SMA fibers as reinforcement in concrete members subjected to cyclic flexural loading. Digital image correlation (DIC) was used to monitor the full field displacements and strains of the concrete beam specimens. Fiber density and statistical spatial point pattern functions were used to assess the fiber distribution. Two acoustic emission sensors were attached to each side of the concrete specimens to characterize crack development. A correlation between the crack width propagation and cumulative energy captured by the acoustic emission sensors was established. Results showed that the hybrid specimen with equal fiber volume ratios for steel and SMA fibers exhibit a lower mid-span deflection and smaller crack width. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Adsorption technologies provide high selectivity and low energy consumption making this technique very attractive to be employed in post-combustion carbon capture. In this publication, a material made of activated carbon and zeolite 13X is considered for a hybrid process termed Temperature Electric Swing Adsorption (T/ESA). This hybrid T/ESA can work as a traditional Temperature Swing Adsorption (TSA) heated by hot gas, but can also increase the temperature of the adsorbent very fast by Joule effect as long as the activated carbon provides a continuous conductive matrix for electricity. This paper discusses a detailed modeling of the T/ESA process when applied to three cases. The first case is the simulation of the T/ESA process with exhaust with 12% of CO 2 concentration, which has been chosen to validate the model against literature results. The second and third case studies consider the T/ESA application in a natural gas combined cycle (NGCC) traditional power plant, and in a NGCC plant with exhaust gas recycle (EGR). These cases were selected to investigate the adsorption technology at low CO 2 concentration and quantify the benefit of the EGR for carbon capture applications. Starting from an NGCC overall electric efficiency of 58.3% LHV based, the efficiency of the NGCC with T/ESA technology reduces to 35.3% while with EGR is 38.9% against the 49.9% with the MEA absorption plant. The same results are confirmed by the SPECCA index 13.05 MJ LHV /kg CO2 to 9.64 MJ LHV /kg CO2 against the reference of 3.36 MJ LHV /kg CO2 . Rose rosette emaravirus (RRV, genus Emaravirus), the causal agent of rose rosette disease, is the topmost pathogen of concern for the rose industry in the United States. The only strategy available for disease management is early identification and eradication of the infected plants. Highly reliable, specific, and sensitive detection assays are thus required to test and confirm the presence of RRV in suspected plant samples. RRV is only a recently characterized virus and hence limits the diagnostic tools available for its early detection. With a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Specialty Crop Research Initiative (SCRI) project sponsorship, several diagnostic tools including end-point reverse transcriptionpolymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and RT-qPCR assays targeting single and multiple genes targets were developed for routine diagnostics. This review introduces an overall view of the different diagnostic tools developed, which are reliable, highly sensitive, and can be easily implemented for detection and identification in laboratories providing diagnostic services and confirmation of RRV-infected samples. Quantum two-level systems interacting with the surroundings are ubiquitous in nature. The interaction suppresses quantum coherence and forces the system towards a steady state. Such dissipative processes are captured by the paradigmatic spin-boson model, describing a two-state particle, the “spin”, interacting with an environment formed by harmonic oscillators. A fundamental question to date is to what extent intense coherent driving impacts a strongly dissipative system. Here we investigate experimentally and theoretically a superconducting qubit strongly coupled to an electromagnetic environment and subjected to a coherent drive. This setup realizes the driven Ohmic spin-boson model. We show that the drive reinforces environmental suppression of quantum coherence, and that a coherent-toincoherent transition can be achieved by tuning the drive amplitude. An out-of-equilibrium detailed balance relation is demonstrated. Gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone (GnIH) has been characterized by its ability to inhibit either basal or gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)-induced gonadotropin synthesis and release in birds and mammals. However, the physiological role of GnIH on the reproductive axis in fish remains inconclusive, with most studies focusing on the orders Cypriniformes and Perciformes. To gain insight into the role of GnIH in the regulation of reproduction in the order Pleuronectiformes, we first cloned the LPXRFa gene, the piscine ortholog of GnIH, in the half-smooth tongue sole. The full-length cDNA of LPXRFa was 918 bp in size with an open reading frame (ORF) of 585 bp that encoded a 194 amino acids preprohormone with a calculated molecular mass and isoelectric point of 21.73 kDa and 6.52, respectively. The LPXRFa precursor encoded two putative peptide sequences that included –MPMRF or –MPQRF motifs at the C-terminal. Tissue distribution analysis showed that LPXRFa transcripts could be detected at high levels in the brains of both sexes and to a lesser extent in the ovary, heart and stomach of females, while a noteworthy expression was observed in the kidney and muscle of males. Furthermore, the expression patterns of LPXRFa mRNA during ovarian maturation were also investigated. In the brain, the mRNA expression of LPXRFa increased significantly at stage III, declined at stage V and reached a maximum at stage VI. In the pituitary, the levels of LPXRFa mRNA remained stable during ovarian maturation and increased significantly to the top level at stage V and then declined back to basal levels. In contrast, the ovarian LPXRFa mRNA levels declined sharply at stage III and remained depressed over the course of ovarian maturation. Taken together, our results provide further evidence for the existence of LPXRFa in the order Pleuronectiformes and suggest its possible involvement in the regulation of reproduction in the female tongue sole. Mechanical objects have important practical applications in the fields of quantum information and metrology as quantum memories or transducers for measuring and connecting different types of quantum systems. The field of electromechanics is in pursuit of a robust and highly coherent device that couples motion to nonlinear quantum objects such as superconducting qubits. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a high-frequency bulk acoustic wave resonator that is strongly coupled to a superconducting qubit using piezoelectric transduction with a cooperativity of 260. We measure qubit and mechanical coherence times on the order of 10 microseconds. Our device requires only simple fabrication methods and provides controllable access to a multitude of phonon modes. Limited data are available on the prevalence of livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus ( LA- MRSA) in the UK. We tested 124 raw meat samples for MRSA including pork ( n = 63), chicken ( n = 50) and turkey ( n = 11) collected from retail outlets in North West England between March and July 2015. MRSA was recovered from nine (7·3%) samples (four chicken, three pork and two turkey) from different butchers and supermarkets. Four were labelled of UK origin, three were from continental Europe; the origin was not specified for two samples. Whole-genome sequencing ( WGS), spa typing and the presence of lineage-specific canonical single nucleotide polymorphisms confirmed that they belonged to the livestock-associated clade of clonal complex ( CC) 398. Seven (77·8%) isolates were multi-drug resistant. Phylogenetic analyses showed the isolates were diverse, suggesting multiple silent introductions of LA- MRSA into the UK food chain. Two chicken meat isolates belonged to a sub-clade recently reported from human cases in Europe where poultry meat was the probable source. The low levels of MRSA identified (<20 CFU per g) and absence of enterotoxin genes suggest the risk of acquisition of, or food-poisoning due to, LA- MRSA is low. Nevertheless, the MRSA contamination rate is higher than previously estimated; further evaluation of the public health impacts of LA- MRSA is warranted. Significance and Impact of the Study Livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus ( LA- MRSA) is a public health concern worldwide, but has only been reported sporadically in the UK. In the largest UK study to date, samples of raw meat at retail sale were examined for both the presence and levels of MRSA. We report the first isolations of CC398 LA- MRSA from poultry meat in the UK including representatives of a particular sub-clade associated with cases of human infection/colonization in Europe. Although levels were low (<20 CFU per g), the contamination rate was higher than previous UK studies. Symbiotic associations between green algae (Chlorophyta) and fungi give rise to morphologically and eco-physiologically distinct entities, or so-called, lichens. In one of the most peculiar of these associations, the partners are species of the macroscopic genus Prasiola ( Trebouxiophyceae ) and the ascomycete Mastodia tessellata ( Verrucariaceae ). This is the only known case of a lichen symbiosis involving a foliose green alga. Despite intense research targeted at understanding the biology of this particular association, little is known about the genetic variability of its symbionts. This study focuses on the photobiont partner of this lichen and was designed to explore and compare its genetic diversity along a latitudinal axis from Alaska to Antarctica. Molecular sequence data were generated for three loci: two nuclear markers ( nrITS , RPL10A ) and one plastid-encoded marker ( tufA ). The usefulness of the Prasiola nrITS and RPL10A data was examined at the species and intraspecific levels. We used the population assignment tests implemented in BAPS and STRUCTURE and two algorithmic species delimitation procedures (ABGD, GMYC) to generate species boundary discovery hypotheses, which were subsequently tested using Bayes factors. Population genetic differentiation and structure were also assessed through fixation indices, polymorphism statistics and haplotype networks. Based on the results of the species validation method, we propose that at least two species of Prasiola associate with the lichen-forming fungus Mastodia tessellata . Of these, P. borealis is broadly distributed in Alaska, Tierra del Fuego and the Antarctic Peninsula, whereas the second, undescribed, species is restricted to the Antarctic Peninsula. We detected significant phylogeographic substructure in P. borealis , including greater haplotype diversity in the Tierra del Fuego populations. Our findings provide new data that will be useful to unravel the cryptic diversity and phylogeographic patterns of the green alga partners of lichens. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary NanoShaper is a program specifically aiming the construction and analysis of the molecular surface of nanoscopic systems. It uses ray-casting for parallelism and it performs analytical computations whenever possible to maximize robustness and accuracy of the approach. Among the other features, NanoShaper provides volume, surface area, including that of internal cavities, for any considered molecular system. It identifies pockets via a very intuitive definition based on the concept of probe radius, intrinsic to the definition of the solvent excluded surface. We show here that, with a suitable choice of the parameters, the same approach can also permit the visualisation of molecular channels. Flow phantoms are widely used in studies associated with Doppler ultrasound measurements, acting as an effective experimental validation system in cardiovascular-related research and in new algorithm/instrumentation development. The development of materials that match the acoustic and mechanical properties of the vascular system is of great interest while designing flow phantoms. Although recipes that meet the flow phantom standard defined by the International Electrotechnical Commission 61685 are already available in the literature, the standard procedure for material preparations and phantom fabrications has not been well established. In this paper, two types of flow phantoms, with and without blood vessel mimic, are described in detail in terms of the material preparation and phantom fabrication. The phantom materials chosen for the two phantoms are from published phantom studies, and their physical properties have been investigated previously. Both the flow phantoms have been scanned by ultrasound scanners and images from different modes are presented. These phantoms may be used in the validation and characterization of Doppler ultrasound measurements in blood vessels with a diameter above 1 mm. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

It is of great significance to provide theoretical guidance to the application of carbon nanotubes as adhesive materials via the investigation on their adhesion force. In this paper, molecular dynamics was adopted to investigate the adhesion force between the graphene substrate and the carbon nanotubes with varying deformation degrees and diverse types of irradiation induced defects at different temperatures. No obvious adhesion force was found between the carbon nanotube and graphene until the deformation degree of the former reached > 70%. The adhesion force would be maintained at a high level when the temperature was in the range of 280–320 K, which limited its application. Moreover, the adhesion force between carbon nanotube with vacancies and graphene substrate would decrease with increasing size of vacancies. Finally, compared with monovacancies and divacancies, Stone-Wales defects most remarkably reduced the adhesion force of carbon nanotubes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Density and sound velocity for solutions of carbohydrates glucose, fructose and sucrose in water and in aqueous solutions of 10% w/w of polymers PPG400, PEG400, PEG4000, and PEG10000 were measured at T = (288.15, 293.15, 298.15, 303.15, and 308.15) K. From the measured experimental data, the isentropic compressibility values of the investigated solutions were determined and from which the values of the hydration numbers of the carbohydrates were calculated. Apparent molar volume and apparent molar isentropic compressibility of the carbohydrates in the investigated solutions were also determined and based of them the sweet properties of the carbohydrates were discussed. Finally, the infinite dilutions apparent molar properties for transfer of the carbohydrates from water to aqueous solutions of different polymers were studied and the results were discussed based on the different interactions exist in the solutions. The present paper reports a complete mass spectrometric characterization of both the phenolic and volatile fractions of a dried spearmint extract. Phenolic compounds were analysed by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (UHPLC-ESI-MSn) and a total of 66 compounds were tentatively identified, being the widest phenolic characterisation of spearmint to date. The analysis suggests that the extract is composed of rosmarinic acid and its derivatives (230.5 ± 13.5 mg/g) with smaller amounts of salvianolic acids, caffeoylquinic acids, hydroxybenzoic acids, hydroxycinnamic acids, flavones, and flavanones. Head space solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) technique, that was applied to characterize the volatile fraction of spearmint, identified molecules belonging to different chemical classes, such as p-cymene, isopiperitone, and piperitone, dihydroedulan II, menthone, p-cymen-8-ol, and β-linalool. This comprehensive phytochemical analysis can be useful to test the authenticity of this product rich in rosmarinic acid and other phenolics, and when assessing its biological properties. Patterning strategies based on directed self-assembly (DSA) of block copolymers, as one of the most appealing next-generation lithography techniques, have attracted abiding interest. DSA aims at fabricating defect-free geometrically simple patterns on large scales or irregular device-oriented structures. Successful application of DSA requires to control and optimize multiple process parameters related to the bulk morphology of the block copolymer, its interaction with the chemical or topographical guiding pattern, and the kinetics of structure formation. Most studies have focused on validating DSA patterning techniques using PS- b -PMMA block copolymers as a prototypical material. As the development of DSA techniques advances, recent efforts have been devoted to extending the materials selection in order to fabricate more complex geometric patterns or patterns with smaller characteristic dimensions. How to select appropriate polymer materials in a vast parameter space is a critical but also challenging step. In this review, we discuss recent progress in the research of DSA of block copolymers focusing on three aspects: (i) screening the block copolymer materials, (ii) controlling the film properties, and (iii) tailoring the phase separation kinetics. We acoustically modulated the localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) of metal nanostructures integrated within microfluidic systems. An acoustically driven micromixing device based on bubble microstreaming quickly and homogeneously mixes multiple laminar flows of different refractive indices. The altered refractive index of the mixed fluids enables rapid modulation of the LSPRs of gold nanodisk arrays embedded within the microfluidic channel. The device features fast response for dynamic operation, and the refractive index within the channel is tailorable. With these unique features, our "acousto-plasmofluidic" device can be useful in applications such as optical switches, modulators, filters, biosensors, and lab-on-a-chip systems. Pressure perturbation calorimetry (PPC) is an efficient technique to study the volumetric properties of biomolecules in solution. In PPC, the coefficient of thermal expansion of the partial volume of the biomolecule is deduced from the heat consumed or produced after small isothermal pressure-jumps. The expansion coefficient strongly depends on the interaction of the biomolecule with the solvent or cosolvent as well as on its packing and internal dynamic properties. This technique, complemented with molecular acoustics and densimetry, provides valuable insights into the basic thermodynamic properties of solvation and volume effects accompanying interactions, reactions and phase transitions of biomolecular systems. After outlining the principles of the technique, we present representative examples on protein folding, including effects of cosolvents and crowding, together with a discussion of the interpretation, and further applications. The molecular mechanisms underlying age-related hearing loss are not fully understood, and currently, there is no treatment for this disorder. MicroRNAs have recently been reported to be increasingly associated with age-related diseases and are emerging as promising therapeutic targets. In this study, miR-34a/Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1)/p53 signaling was examined in cochlear hair cells during aging. MiR-34a, p53 acetylation, and apoptosis increased in the cochlea of C57BL/6 mice with aging, whereas an age-related decrease in SIRT1 was observed. In the inner ear HEI-OC1 cell line, miR-34a overexpression inhibited SIRT1, leading to an increase in p53 acetylation and apoptosis. Moreover, miR-34a knockdown increased SIRT1 expression and diminished p53 acetylation, and apoptosis. Additionally, resveratrol, an activator of SIRT1, significantly rescued miR-34a overexpression-induced HEI-OC1 cell death and significantly reduced hearing threshold shifts and hair cell loss in C57BL/6 mice after a 2-month administration. Our results support a link between age-related cochlear hair cell apoptosis and miR-34a/SIRT1/p53 signaling, which may serve as a potential target for age-related hearing loss treatment. Purulent pericarditis is a rare diagnosis with life-threatening implications due to the rapid accumulation of pericardial material, swiftly progressing to tamponade physiology. The nature of its quickly evolving and severe implications demands a low threshold for diagnostic consideration where appropriate. We present an unusual case of purulent pericarditis secondary to Streptococcus intermedius in a previously healthy male adolescent without traditional risk factors, which raises the question of whether emergent S. intermedius species may have acquired novel molecular mechanisms. The goals of this project were to determine the daily, seasonal and spatial patterns of red grouper Epinephelus morio sound production on the West Florida Shelf ( WFS) using passive acoustics. An 11 month time series of acoustic data from fixed recorders deployed at a known E. morio aggregation site showed that E. morio produce sounds throughout the day and during all months of the year. Increased calling (number of files containing E. morio sound) was correlated to sunrise and sunset, and peaked in late summer (July and August) and early winter (November and December). Due to the ubiquitous production of sound, large-scale spatial mapping across the WFS of E. morio sound production was feasible using recordings from shorter duration-fixed location recorders and autonomous underwater vehicles ( AUVs). Epinephelus morio were primarily recorded in waters 15-93 m deep, with increased sound production detected in hard bottom areas and within the Steamboat Lumps Marine Protected Area (Steamboat Lumps). AUV tracks through Steamboat Lumps, an offshore marine reserve where E. morio hole excavations have been previously mapped, showed that hydrophone-integrated AUVs could accurately map the location of soniferous fish over spatial scales of <1 km. The results show that passive acoustics is an effective, non-invasive tool to map the distribution of this species over large spatial scales. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The breakthrough capacity of optoacoustics for three-dimensional visualization of dynamic events in real time has been recently showcased. Yet, efficient spectral unmixing for functional imaging of entire volumetric regions is significantly challenged by motion artifacts in concurrent acquisitions at multiple wavelengths. Here, we introduce a method for simultaneous acquisition of multispectral volumetric datasets by introducing a microsecond-level delay between excitation laser pulses at different wavelengths. Robust performance is demonstrated by real-time volumetric visualization of functional blood parametrers in human vasculature with a handheld matrix array optoacoustic probe. This approach can avert image artifacts imposed by velocities greater than 2 m/s, thus, does not only facilitate imaging influenced by respiratory, cardiac or other intrinsic fast movements in living tissues, but can achieve artifact-free imaging in the presence of more significant motion, e.g. abrupt displacements during handheld-mode operation in a clinical environment. Abstract: A new approach to the monitoring of granulation processes using passive acoustics together with precise control over the granulation process has highlighted the importance of particle–particle and particle–bowl collisions in acoustic emission. The results have shown that repeatable acoustic results could be obtained but only when a spray nozzle water addition system was used. Acoustic emissions were recorded from a transducer attached to the bowl and an airborne transducer. It was found that the airborne transducer detected very little from the granulation and only experienced small changes throughout the process. The results from the bowl transducer showed that during granulation the frequency content of the acoustic emission shifted towards the lower frequencies. Results from the discrete element model indicate that when larger particles are used the number of collisions the particles experience reduces. This is a result of the volume conservation methodology used in this study, therefore larger particles results in less particles. These simulation results coupled with previous theoretical work on the frequency content of an impacting sphere explain why the frequency content of the acoustic emissions reduces during granule growth. The acoustic system used was also clearly able to identify when large over-wetted granules were present in the system, highlighting its benefit for detecting undesirable operational conditions. High-speed photography was used to study if visual changes in the granule properties could be linked with the changing acoustic emissions. The high speed photography was only possible towards the latter stages of the granulation process and it was found that larger granules produced a higher magnitude of acoustic emission across a broader frequency range. ABSTRACT Implant osseointegration can currently only be assessed reliably post mortem. A novel method that relies on the principle of acoustic sound analysis was developed to enable examination of the longitudinal progress of osseointegration. The method is based on a magnetic sphere inside a hollow cylinder of the implant. By excitation using an external magnetic field, collision of the sphere inside the implant produces a sound signal. Custom-made titanium implants equipped thusly were inserted in each lateral femoral epicondyle of 20 New Zealand White Rabbits. Two groups were investigated: Uncoated, machined surface versus antiadhesive surface; and calcium phosphate-coated surface versus antiadhesive surface. The sound analysis was performed postoperatively and weekly. After 4 weeks, the animals were euthanized, and the axial pull-out strengths of the implants were determined. A significant increase in the central frequency was observed for the loose implants (mean pull-out strength 21.1 ± 16.9 N), up to 6.4 kHz over 4 weeks. In comparison, the central frequency of the osseointegrated implants (105.2 ± 25.3 N) dropped to its initial value. The presented method shows potential for monitoring the osseointegration of different implant surfaces and could considerably reduce the number of animals needed for experiments. © 2014 Orthopaedic Research Society. Reef fish distributions are patchy in time and space with some coral reef habitats supporting higher densities (i.e., aggregations) of fish than others. Identifying and quantifying fish aggregations (particularly during spawning events) are often top priorities for coastal managers. However, the rapid mapping of these aggregations using conventional survey methods (e.g., non-technical SCUBA diving and remotely operated cameras) are limited by depth, visibility and time. Acoustic sensors (i.e., splitbeam and multibeam echosounders) are not constrained by these same limitations, and were used to concurrently map and quantify the location, density and size of reef fish along with seafloor structure in two, separate locations in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Reef fish aggregations were documented along the shelf edge, an ecologically important ecotone in the region. Fish were grouped into three classes according to body size, and relationships with the benthic seascape were modeled in one area using Boosted Regression Trees. These models were validated in a second area to test their predictive performance in locations where fish have not been mapped. Models predicting the density of large fish (≥29 cm) performed well (i.e., AUC = 0.77). Water depth and standard deviation of depth were the most influential predictors at two spatial scales (100 and 300 m). Models of small (≤11 cm) and medium (12–28 cm) fish performed poorly (i.e., AUC = 0.49 to 0.68) due to the high prevalence (45–79%) of smaller fish in both locations, and the unequal prevalence of smaller fish in the training and validation areas. Integrating acoustic sensors with spatial modeling offers a new and reliable approach to rapidly identify fish aggregations and to predict the density large fish in un-surveyed locations. In order to reduce line spectrum of radiation noise from submarine, a type of weak radiation double cylindrical ring stiffened shell was proposed. Mechanical impedance theory was used to analyze mechanism of controlling the modal response amplitude of ring-stiffened cylindrical shell. Radial modal mechanical impedance of the ring was derived by introducing the assumption of inner-motion of cylindrical shell's section. Based on the concepts of impedance mismatch and wave conversion, the model of impedance enhancement rib was built and its isolation performance was analyzed. With the consideration of the brace's strong coupling effect, the brace's wave attenuation was designed. Combining the structures of reinforced impedance rib and wave attenuation brace, the structure-borne sound design of double cylindrical shell was done. Further, the characteristics of vibration and sound radiation were numerical analyzed. The results show that the proposed double cylindrical ring stiffened shell could realize radiation noise line spectrum reduction effectively. The vibration mean square velocity, radiation sound power and sound pressure are depressed greatly. The effect of noise depression and vibration reduction is obvious. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fast encoding of frequency modulated ( FM) sweeps is crucial for communication. In humans, FM sweeps deviating from the acoustic regularity elicit the mismatch negativity ( MMN) evoked potential. Yet, direction sensitivity to FM sweeps is found in animals' primary auditory cortex, upstream of MMN sources found in humans. Here, we were interested in whether direction deviants of complex FM sweeps modulated brain responses earlier than MMN. We used a controlled oddball paradigm, and measured the middle latency responses ( MLRs) and the MMN. Our results showed a repetition enhancement to the standards at the Pa component of the MLR and a genuine MMN in the later response range. These results show that, early in the cortical hierarchy, the system is sensitive to the physical characteristics of the repetitive stimuli, but a higher-order mechanism is needed to detect violations of the acoustic regularity. Abstract: A consortium composed of Thelma Biotel and Center of Oceanography developed and tested an acoustic 3-axis accelerometer transmitter. The first testing phase took place in experimental tanks and consisted of externally attaching prototype data logging tags in Lusitanian toadfish (Halobatrachus didactylus Bloch & Schneider, 1801) and comparing raw logged data with observed behaviours to obtain characteristic accelerometer data patterns that could be assigned to those typical movements. Four behavioural “signatures” were considered, two different burrowing movements, attack towards a prey and general activity. The second phase was the development of a prototype with integrated software capable of identifying those accelerometer typical patterns, process the information and transmit relevant data acoustically. Burrowing movements and activity were detected and transmitted with 100% accuracy while attacks were detected with a 61% successful rate. The third phase took place in the Mira estuary (SW Portugal) with 2 groups (five and six individuals each) of free living toadfish to test the codified acoustic signal transfer from the AccelTag to the acoustic receiver array. The novelty of the AccelTag is that is has the measuring capabilities of an accelerometer archival tag but without the necessity of recapture the tagged fish, since it has the ability of analysing the logged data, extract very detailed species dependent information and transmit the relevant processed data. Rationale: Prepulse inhibition (PPI) of the acoustic startle response, a measure of sensorimotor gating, can be enhanced by nicotine. Moreover, the TT genotype of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) α3-subunit ( CHRNA3) rs1051730 polymorphism has previously been associated with diminished PPI and nicotine dependence. Objectives: We tested whether this CHRNA3 polymorphism also modulates the nicotine-induced enhancement of PPI. Methods: We assessed the effect of nicotine on PPI, startle reactivity, and habituation in 52 healthy nonsmoking volunteers genotyped for CHRNA3 rs1051730 in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, counterbalanced, within-subjects design. Additionally, cotinine plasma levels were measured. Results: Nicotine significantly enhanced PPI in TT homozygotes only and tended to worsen PPI in TC and CC carriers. Additionally, nicotine significantly reduced startle habituation. Conclusions: The present findings imply that the effect of nicotine on sensorimotor gating is modulated by nAChR α3-subunits.
