Abstract We present the first continuous operation in a surface lab of BULLKID, a detector for searches of light Dark Matter and precision measurements of the coherent and elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering. The detector consists of an array of 60 cubic silicon particle absorbers of 0.34 g each, sensed by cryogenic kinetic inductance detectors. The data presented focusses on one of the central elements of the array and on its surrounding elements used as veto. The energy spectrum resulting from an exposure of 39 h to ambient backgrounds, obtained without radiation shields, is flat at the level of $$(2.0\pm 0.1\,\mathrm{stat.}\pm 0.2\,\mathrm{syst.})\times 10^6$$ ( 2.0 ± 0.1 stat . ± 0.2 syst . ) × 10 6 counts/keV kg days down to the energy threshold of $$160\pm 13$$ 160 ± 13 eV. The data analysis demonstrates the unique capability of rejecting backgrounds generated from interactions in other sites of the array, stemming from the segmented and monolithic structure of the detector.

Abstract Rare-event search experiments located on-surface, such as short-baseline reactor neutrino experiments, are often limited by muon-induced background events. Highly efficient muon vetos are essential to reduce the detector background and to reach the sensitivity goals. We demonstrate the feasibility of deploying organic plastic scintillators at sub-Kelvin temperatures. For the NUCLEUS experiment, we developed a cryogenic muon veto equipped with wavelength shifting fibers and a silicon photo multiplier operating inside a dilution refrigerator. The achievable compactness of cryostat-internal integration is a key factor in keeping the muon rate to a minimum while maximizing coverage. The thermal and light output properties of a plastic scintillation detector were examined. We report first data on the thermal conductivity and heat capacity of the polystyrene-based scintillator UPS-923A over a wide range of temperatures extending below one Kelvin. The light output was measured down to 0.8 K and observed to increase by a factor of 1.61 ± 0.05 compared to 300 K. The development of an organic plastic scintillation muon veto operating in sub-Kelvin temperature environments opens new perspectives for rare-event searches with cryogenic detectors at sites lacking substantial overburden.

Abstract Radioactivity was recently discovered as a source of decoherence and correlated errors for the real-world implementation of superconducting quantum processors. In this work, we measure levels of radioactivity present in a typical laboratory environment (from muons, neutrons, and $$\gamma $$ γ -rays emitted by naturally occurring radioactive isotopes) and in the most commonly used materials for the assembly and operation of state-of-the-art superconducting qubits. We present a GEANT-4 based simulation to predict the rate of impacts and the amount of energy released in a qubit chip from each of the mentioned sources. We finally propose mitigation strategies for the operation of next-generation qubits in a radio-pure environment.

This research proposes a numerical methodology to assess the behavior of a car towing a generic caravan in crosswind conditions. Driving with crosswind can lead to dangerous situations. The vehicle can have stability issues and eventually crash. Different crosswind and vehicle velocities have been analysed using a car-caravan dynamic model with accurate aerodynamic loads. The forces generated by the action of the wind are calculated with CFD simulations and applied to the vehicle to perform dynamic simulations. Results show that also non-extreme crosswind condition could lead to dangerous situations.

Abstract Localization and modeling of radioactive contaminations is a challenge that ultra-low background experiments are constantly facing. These are fundamental steps both to extract scientific results and to further reduce the background of the detectors. Here we present an innovative technique based on the analysis of $$\alpha -\alpha $$ α - α delayed coincidences in $${}^{232}$$ 232 Th and $${}^{238}$$ 238 U decay chains, developed to investigate the contaminations of the ZnSe crystals in the CUPID-0 experiment. This method allows to disentangle surface and bulk contaminations of the detectors relying on the different probability to tag delayed coincidences as function of the $$\alpha $$ α decay position.

Abstract The CUORE experiment is a large bolometric array searching for the lepton number violating neutrino-less double beta decay ( $$0\nu \beta \beta $$ 0 ν β β ) in the isotope $$\mathrm {^{130}Te}$$ 130 Te . In this work we present the latest results on two searches for the double beta decay (DBD) of $$\mathrm {^{130}Te}$$ 130 Te to the first $$0^{+}_2$$ 0 2 + excited state of $$\mathrm {^{130}Xe}$$ 130 Xe : the $$0\nu \beta \beta $$ 0 ν β β decay and the Standard Model-allowed two-neutrinos double beta decay ( $$2\nu \beta \beta $$ 2 ν β β ). Both searches are based on a 372.5 kg $$\times $$ × yr TeO $$_2$$ 2 exposure. The de-excitation gamma rays emitted by the excited Xe nucleus in the final state yield a unique signature, which can be searched for with low background by studying coincident events in two or more bolometers. The closely packed arrangement of the CUORE crystals constitutes a significant advantage in this regard. The median limit setting sensitivities at 90% Credible Interval (C.I.) of the given searches were estimated as $$\mathrm {S^{0\nu }_{1/2} = 5.6 \times 10^{24} \, \mathrm {yr}}$$ S 1 / 2 0 ν = 5.6 × 10 24 yr for the $${0\nu \beta \beta }$$ 0 ν β β decay and $$\mathrm {S^{2\nu }_{1/2} = 2.1 \times 10^{24} \, \mathrm {yr}}$$ S 1 / 2 2 ν = 2.1 × 10 24 yr for the $${2\nu \beta \beta }$$ 2 ν β β decay. No significant evidence for either of the decay modes was observed and a Bayesian lower bound at $$90\%$$ 90 % C.I. on the decay half lives is obtained as: $$\mathrm {(T_{1/2})^{0\nu }_{0^+_2} > 5.9 \times 10^{24} \, \mathrm {yr}}$$ ( T 1 / 2 ) 0 2 + 0 ν > 5.9 × 10 24 yr for the $$0\nu \beta \beta $$ 0 ν β β mode and $$\mathrm {(T_{1/2})^{2\nu }_{0^+_2} > 1.3 \times 10^{24} \, \mathrm {yr}}$$ ( T 1 / 2 ) 0 2 + 2 ν > 1.3 × 10 24 yr for the $$2\nu \beta \beta $$ 2 ν β β mode. These represent the most stringent limits on the DBD of $$^{130}$$ 130 Te to excited states and improve by a factor $$\sim 5$$ ∼ 5 the previous results on this process.

Abstract The next generation of bolometric experiments searching for rave events, in particular for the neutrino-less double beta decay, needs fast, high-sensitivity and easy-to-scale cryogenic light detectors. The CALDER project (2014–2020) developed a new technology for light detection at cryogenic temperature. In this paper we describe the achievements and the final prototype of this project, consisting of a $$5\times 5~\hbox {cm}^2$$ 5 × 5 cm 2 , $$650~\upmu \text {m}$$ 650 μ m thick silicon substrate coupled to a single kinetic inductance detector made of a three-layer aluminum-titanium-aluminum. The baseline energy resolution is $$34\pm 1$$ 34 ± 1 (stat) $$\pm 2$$ ± 2 (syst) eV RMS and the response time is $$120~\upmu $$ 120 μ s. These features, along with the natural multiplexing capability of kinetic inductance detectors, meet the requirements of future large-scale experiments.

Background radiation has been identified as a key factor limiting the coherence times of superconducting circuits. Here, the authors measure the impact of environmental and cosmic radiation on a superconducting resonator with varying degrees of shielding, including an underground facility.

Abstract The production of ultra-pure raw material is a crucial step to ensure the required background level in rare event searches. In this work, we establish an innovative technique developed to produce high-purity (99.999%) granular zinc. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the refining procedure by measuring the internal contaminations of the purified zinc with a high-purity germanium detector at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. The total activity of cosmogenic activated nuclides is measured at the level of a few mBq/kg, as well as limits on naturally occurring radionuclides are set to less than mBq/kg. The excellent radiopurity of the zinc sample allows us to search for electron capture with positron emission and neutrinoless double electron capture of $$^{64}$$ 64 Zn, setting the currently most stringent lower limits on their half-lives, $$T_{1/2}^{\varepsilon \beta ^+} > 2.7\times 10^{21}~\text {year}$$ T 1 / 2 ε β + > 2.7 × 10 21 year (90% CI), and $$T_{1/2}^{0\nu 2\varepsilon }> 2.6\times 10^{21}~\text {year}$$ T 1 / 2 0 ν 2 ε > 2.6 × 10 21 year (90% CI), respectively.

Abstract CUPID-0 is the first pilot experiment of CUPID, a next-generation project searching for neutrinoless double beta decay. In its first scientific run, CUPID-0 operated 26 ZnSe cryogenic calorimeters coupled to light detectors in the underground Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. In this work, we analyzed a ZnSe exposure of 11.34 kg year to search for the neutrinoless double beta decay of $$^{70}$$ 70 Zn and for the neutrinoless positron-emitting electron capture of $$^{64}$$ 64 Zn. We found no evidence for these decays and set 90$$\%$$ % credible interval limits of $$\hbox {T}_{1/2}^{0\nu \beta \beta }$$ T1/20νββ ($$^{70}$$ 70 Zn) > 1.6 $$10^{21}$$ 1021 year and $$\hbox {T}_{1/2}^{0\nu EC \beta +}$$ T1/20νECβ+ ($$^{64}$$ 64 Zn) > 1.2$$\times 10^{22}$$ ×1022 year, surpassing by more than one order of magnitude the previous experimental results (Belli et al. in J Phys G 38(11):115107, https://doi.org/10.1088/0954-3899/38/11/115107, 2011).

Rare event physics demands very detailed background control, high-performance detectors, and custom analysis strategies. Cryogenic calorimeters combine all these ingredients very effectively, representing a promising tool for next-generation experiments. CUPID-0 is one of the most advanced examples of such a technique, having demonstrated its potential with several results obtained with limited exposure. In this paper, we present a further application. Exploiting the analysis of delayed coincidence, we can identify the signals caused by the 220Rn-216Po decay sequence on an event-by-event basis. The analysis of these events allows us to extract the time differences between the two decays, leading to a new evaluation of 216Po half-life, estimated as (143.3±2.8) ms.

Abstract We report on a search for double beta decay of $$^{130}\hbox {Te}$$ 130Te to the first $$0^{+}$$ 0+ excited state of $$^{130}\hbox {Xe}$$ 130Xe using a $$9.8\,\hbox {kg}\cdot \hbox {yr}$$ 9.8kg·yr exposure of $$^{130}\hbox {Te}$$ 130Te collected with the CUORE-0 experiment. In this work we exploit different topologies of coincident events to search for both the neutrinoless and two-neutrino double beta decay modes. We find no evidence for either mode and place lower bounds on the half-lives: $$T^{0\nu }_{0^+_1}>7.9\cdot 10^{23}\hbox {yr}$$ T01+0ν>7.9·1023yr and $$T^{2\nu }_{0^+_1}>2.4\cdot 10^{23}\hbox {yr}$$ T01+2ν>2.4·1023yr ($$90\%\,\hbox {CL}$$ 90%CL ). Combining our results with those obtained by the CUORICINO experiment, we achieve the most stringent constraints available for these processes: $$T^{0\nu }_{0^+_1}>1.4\cdot 10^{24}\hbox {yr}$$ T01+0ν>1.4·1024yr and $$T^{2\nu }_{0^+_1}>2.5\cdot 10^{23}\hbox {yr}$$ T01+2ν>2.5·1023yr ($$90\%\,\hbox {CL}$$ 90%CL ).

Abstract Molybdenum based crystals such as $$\hbox {Li}_{2}\hbox {MoO}_{4}$$ Li2MoO4 and CaMoO$$_4$$ 4 are emerging as leading candidates for next generation experiments searching for neutrino-less double beta decay with cryogenic calorimeters (CUPID, AMoRE). The exquisite energy resolution and high radio-purity of these crystals come at the cost of a potentially detrimental background source: the two neutrinos double beta decay of $$^{100}$$ 100 Mo. Indeed, the fast half-life of this decay mode, combined with the slow response of cryogenic calorimeters, would result in pile-up events in the energy region of interest for neutrino-less double beta decay, reducing the experimental sensitivity. This background can be suppressed using fast and high sensitivity cryogenic light detectors, provided that the scintillation time constant itself does not limit the time resolution. We developed a new detection technique exploiting the high sensitivity, the fast time response and the multiplexing capability of Kinetic Inductance Detectors. We applied the proposed technique to a $$2\times 2\times 2$$ 2×2×2 cm$$^3$$ 3 $$\hbox {Li}_{2}\hbox {MoO}_{4}$$ Li2MoO4 crystal, which was chosen as baseline option for CUPID. We measured simultaneously both the phonon and scintillation signals with KIDs. We derived the scintillation time constant of this compound at millikelvin temperatures obtaining $$\tau _{scint} = 84.5\pm 4.5\mathrm {(syst)}\pm 1.0\mathrm {(stat)}$$ τscint=84.5±4.5(syst)±1.0(stat) $$\mu $$ μ s, constant between 10 and 190 mK.

Abstract Searches for new physics in the coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering require a precise knowledge of the neutrino flux and energy spectrum. In this paper we investigate the feasibility and the performance of an experiment based on a $$^{51}$$ 51 Cr source, whose neutrino spectrum is known and whose activity can be heat-monitored at few permil level. With a 5 MCi source placed at $$\sim 25$$ ∼25 cm from the detector, under an exposure of two $$^{51}$$ 51 Cr half-lives (55.4 days), we evaluate 3900 (900) counts on a 2000 cm$$^3$$ 3 target of germanium (sapphire) featuring an energy threshold of 8 (20) eV. To further increase the exposure, multiple activations of the same source could be possible.

Abstract CUPID-0 is the first large mass array of enriched Zn$$^{82}$$ 82 Se scintillating low temperature calorimeters, operated at LNGS since 2017. During its first scientific runs, CUPID-0 collected an exposure of 9.95 kg year. Thanks to the excellent rejection of $$\alpha $$ α particles, we attained the lowest background ever measured with thermal detectors in the energy region where we search for the signature of $$^{82}\hbox {Se}$$ 82Se neutrinoless double beta decay. In this work we develop a model to reconstruct the CUPID-0 background over the whole energy range of experimental data. We identify the background sources exploiting their distinctive signatures and we assess their extremely low contribution [down to $$\sim 10^{-4}$$ ∼10-4 counts/(keV kg year)] in the region of interest for $$^{82}\hbox {Se}$$ 82Se neutrinoless double beta decay search. This result represents a crucial step towards the comprehension of the background in experiments based on scintillating calorimeters and in next generation projects such as CUPID.

Abstract The CUPID-0 experiment searches for double beta decay using cryogenic calorimeters with double (heat and light) read-out. The detector, consisting of 24 ZnSe crystals 95$$\%$$ % enriched in $$^{82}$$ 82 Se and two natural ZnSe crystals, started data-taking in 2017 at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. We present the search for the neutrino-less double beta decay of $$^{82}$$ 82 Se into the 0$$_1^+$$ 1+ , 2$$_1^+$$ 1+ and 2$$_2^+$$ 2+ excited states of $$^{82}$$ 82 Kr with an exposure of 5.74 kg$$\cdot $$ · yr (2.24$$\times $$ × 10$$^{25}$$ 25 emitters$$\cdot $$ · yr). We found no evidence of the decays and set the most stringent limits on the widths of these processes: $$\varGamma $$ Γ ($$^{82}$$ 82 Se $$\rightarrow ^{82}$$ →82 Kr$$_{0_1^+}$$ 01+ )8.55$$\times $$ × 10$$^{-24}$$ -24 yr$$^{-1}$$ -1 , $$\varGamma $$ Γ ($$^{82}$$ 82 Se $$\rightarrow ^{82}$$ →82 Kr $$_{2_1^+}$$ 21+ )$$\,{

Abstract The suppression of spurious events in the region of interest for neutrinoless double beta decay will play a major role in next generation experiments. The background of detectors based on the technology of cryogenic calorimeters is expected to be dominated by $$\alpha $$ α particles, that could be disentangled from double beta decay signals by exploiting the difference in the emission of the scintillation light. CUPID-0, an array of enriched Zn$$^{82}$$ 82 Se scintillating calorimeters, is the first large mass demonstrator of this technology. The detector started data-taking in 2017 at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso with the aim of proving that dual read-out of light and heat allows for an efficient suppression of the $$\alpha $$ α background. In this paper we describe the software tools we developed for the analysis of scintillating calorimeters and we demonstrate that this technology allows to reach an unprecedented background for cryogenic calorimeters.

Abstract The CUPID-0 detector hosted at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, Italy, is the first large array of enriched scintillating cryogenic detectors for the investigation of $$^{82}$$ 82 Se neutrinoless double-beta decay ($$0\nu \beta \beta $$ 0νββ ). CUPID-0 aims at measuring a background index in the region of interest (RoI) for $$0\nu \beta \beta $$ 0νββ at the level of 10$$^{-3}$$ -3 counts/(keV kg years), the lowest value ever measured using cryogenic detectors. CUPID-0 operates an array of Zn$$^{82}$$ 82 Se scintillating bolometers coupled with bolometric light detectors, with a state of the art technology for background suppression and thorough protocols and procedures for the detector preparation and construction. In this paper, the different phases of the detector design and construction will be presented, from the material selection (for the absorber production) to the new and innovative detector structure. The successful construction of the detector lead to promising preliminary detector performance which is discussed here.

Abstract CUORE is a tonne-scale cryogenic detector operating at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) that uses tellurium dioxide bolometers to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay of $$^{130}$$ 130 Te. CUORE is also suitable to search for low energy rare events such as solar axions or WIMP scattering, thanks to its ultra-low background and large target mass. However, to conduct such sensitive searches requires improving the energy threshold to 10 keV. In this paper, we describe the analysis techniques developed for the low energy analysis of CUORE-like detectors, using the data acquired from November 2013 to March 2015 by CUORE-0, a single-tower prototype designed to validate the assembly procedure and new cleaning techniques of CUORE. We explain the energy threshold optimization, continuous monitoring of the trigger efficiency, data and event selection, and energy calibration at low energies in detail. We also present the low energy background spectrum of CUORE-0 below $$60 \, \mathrm {keV}$$ 60 keV . Finally, we report the sensitivity of CUORE to WIMP annual modulation using the CUORE-0 energy threshold and background, as well as an estimate of the uncertainty on the nuclear quenching factor from nuclear recoils inCUORE-0.

Abstract This paper reports on the development of a technology involving $$^{100}\hbox {Mo}$$ 100 Mo -enriched scintillating bolometers, compatible with the goals of CUPID, a proposed next-generation bolometric experiment to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay. Large mass ( $$\sim 1~\hbox {kg}$$ ∼ 1 kg ), high optical quality, radiopure $$^{100}\hbox {Mo}$$ 100 Mo -containing zinc and lithium molybdate crystals have been produced and used to develop high performance single detector modules based on 0.2–0.4 kg scintillating bolometers. In particular, the energy resolution of the lithium molybdate detectors near the Q-value of the double-beta transition of $$^{100}\hbox {Mo}$$ 100 Mo (3034 keV) is 4–6 keV FWHM. The rejection of the $$\alpha $$ α -induced dominant background above 2.6 MeV is better than $$8\sigma $$ 8 σ . Less than $$10~\upmu \hbox {Bq/kg}$$ 10 μ Bq/kg activity of $$^{232}\hbox {Th}\, (^{228}\hbox {Th})$$ 232 Th ( 228 Th ) and $$^{226}\hbox {Ra}$$ 226 Ra in the crystals is ensured by boule recrystallization. The potential of $$^{100}\hbox {Mo}$$ 100 Mo -enriched scintillating bolometers to perform high sensitivity double-beta decay searches has been demonstrated with only $$10~\hbox {kg}\times \hbox {d}$$ 10 kg × d exposure: the two neutrino double-beta decay half-life of $$^{100}\hbox {Mo}$$ 100 Mo has been measured with the up-to-date highest accuracy as $$T_{1/2}$$ T 1 / 2 = [6.90 ± 0.15(stat.) ± 0.37(syst.)] $$\times ~10^{18}~\hbox {years}$$ × 10 18 years . Both crystallization and detector technologies favor lithium molybdate, which has been selected for the ongoing construction of the CUPID-0/Mo demonstrator, containing several kg of $$^{100}\hbox {Mo}$$ 100 Mo .

Abstract The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is designed to search for neutrinoless double beta decay of $$^{130}$$ 130 Te with an array of 988 TeO $$_2$$ 2 bolometers operating at temperatures around 10 mK. The experiment is currently being commissioned in Hall A of Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, Italy. The goal of CUORE is to reach a 90% C.L. exclusion sensitivity on the $$^{130}$$ 130 Te decay half-life of 9 $$\times $$ × 10 $$^{25}$$ 25 years after 5 years of data taking. The main issue to be addressed to accomplish this aim is the rate of background events in the region of interest, which must not be higher than 10 $$^{-2}$$ - 2 counts/keV/kg/year. We developed a detailed Monte Carlo simulation, based on results from a campaign of material screening, radioassays, and bolometric measurements, to evaluate the expected background. This was used over the years to guide the construction strategies of the experiment and we use it here to project a background model for CUORE. In this paper we report the results of our study and our expectations for the background rate in the energy region where the peak signature of neutrinoless double beta decay of $$^{130}$$ 130 Te is expected.

Abstract We report a study of the CUORE sensitivity to neutrinoless double beta ( $$0\nu \beta \beta $$ 0 ν β β ) decay. We used a Bayesian analysis based on a toy Monte Carlo (MC) approach to extract the exclusion sensitivity to the $$0\nu \beta \beta $$ 0 ν β β decay half-life ( $$T_{1/2}^{\,0\nu }$$ T 1 / 2 0 ν ) at $$90\%$$ 90 % credibility interval (CI) – i.e. the interval containing the true value of $$T_{1/2}^{\,0\nu }$$ T 1 / 2 0 ν with $$90\%$$ 90 % probability – and the $$3~\sigma $$ 3 σ discovery sensitivity. We consider various background levels and energy resolutions, and describe the influence of the data division in subsets with different background levels. If the background level and the energy resolution meet the expectation, CUORE will reach a $$90\%$$ 90 % CI exclusion sensitivity of $$2\cdot 10^{25}$$ 2 · 10 25 year with 3 months, and $$9\cdot 10^{25}$$ 9 · 10 25 year with 5 years of live time. Under the same conditions, the discovery sensitivity after 3 months and 5 years will be $$7\cdot 10^{24}$$ 7 · 10 24 year and $$4\cdot 10^{25}$$ 4 · 10 25 year, respectively.

Abstract We present the performances of a 330 g zinc molybdate (ZnMoO4) crystal working as scintillating bolometer as a possible candidate for a next generation experiment to search for neutrinoless double beta decay of 100Mo. The energy resolution, evaluated at the 2615 keV γ-line of 208Tl, is 6.3 keV FWHM. The internal radioactive contaminations of the ZnMoO4 were evaluated as

Neutrinoless double-beta (0νββ) decay is a hypothesized lepton-number-violating process that offers the only known means of asserting the possible Majorana nature of neutrino mass. The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is an upcoming experiment designed to search for 0νββ decay of 130Te using an array of 988 TeO2 crystal bolometers operated at 10 mK. The detector will contain 206 kg of 130Te and have an average energy resolution of 5 keV; the projected 0νββ decay half-life sensitivity after five years of livetime is 1.6 × 1026 y at 1σ (9.5 × 1025 y at the 90% confidence level), which corresponds to an upper limit on the effective Majorana mass in the range 40–100 meV (50–130 meV). In this paper, we review the experimental techniques used in CUORE as well as its current status and anticipated physics reach.

In the field of fundamental particle physics, the neutrino has become more and more important in the last few years, since the discovery of its mass. In particular, the ultimate nature of the neutrino (if it is a Dirac or a Majorana particle) plays a crucial role not only in neutrino physics, but also in the overall framework of fundamental particle interactions and in cosmology. The only way to disentangle its ultimate nature is to search for the neutrinoless double beta decay. The idea of LUCIFER is to combine the bolometric technique proposed for the CUORE experiment with the bolometric light detection technique used in cryogenic dark matter experiments. The bolometric technique allows an extremely good energy resolution while its combination with the scintillation detection offers an ultimate tool for background rejection. The goal of LUCIFER is not only to build a background-free small-scale experiment but also to directly prove the potentiality of this technique. Preliminary tests on several detectors containing different interesting DBD emitters have clearly demonstrated the excellent background rejection capabilities that arise from the simultaneous, independent, double readout of heat and scintillation light.

The development of wide-area cryogenic light detectors with baseline energy resolution lower than 20 eV RMS is essential for next generation bolometric experiments searching for rare interactions. Indeed the simultaneous readout of the light and heat signals will enable background suppression through particle identification. Because of their excellent intrinsic energy resolution, as well as their well-established reproducibility, kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs) are good candidates for the development of next generation light detectors. The CALDER project is investigating the potential of phonon-mediated KIDs. The first phase of the project allowed to reach a baseline resolution of 80 eV using a single KID made of aluminum on a 2 × 2 cm2 silicon substrate acting as photon absorber. In this paper we present a new prototype detector implementing a trilayer aluminum–titanium–aluminum KID. Taking advantage of superconducting proximity effect the baseline resolution improves down to 26 eV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The NUCLEUS experiment aims to perform a high-precision measurement of Coherent Elastic Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering (CEvNS) at the EdF Chooz B nuclear power plant in France. CEvNS is a unique process to study neutrino properties and to search for physics beyond the Standard Model. The study of CEvNS is also important for light Dark-Matter searches. It could be a possible irreducible background for high-sensitivity Dark-Matter experiments. NUCLEUS is an experiment under construction based on ultra-low threshold ($\sim$20 eV$_{nr}$) cryogenic calorimeters, operated at tens-of-mK temperatures.

Many low-threshold experiments observe sharply rising event rates of yet unknown origins below a few hundred eV, and larger than expected from known backgrounds. Due to the significant impact of this excess on the dark matter or neutrino sensitivity of these experiments, a collective effort has been started to share the knowledge about the individual observations. For this, the EXCESS Workshop was initiated. In its first iteration in June 2021, ten rare event search collaborations contributed to this initiative via talks and discussions. The contributing collaborations were CONNIE, CRESST, DAMIC, EDELWEISS, MINER, NEWS-G, NUCLEUS, RICOCHET, SENSEI and SuperCDMS. They presented data about their observed energy spectra and known backgrounds together with details about the respective measurements. In this paper, we summarize the presented information and give a comprehensive overview of the similarities and differences between the distinct measurements. The provided data is furthermore publicly available on the workshop’s data repository together with a plotting tool for visualization.
