By uncovering novel aspects of second harmonic generation in aluminum, we show that there are unusual and remarkable consequences of resonant absorption, namely an unexpectedly critical role that bound electrons play for light–matter interactions across the optical spectrum, suggesting that a different basic approach is required to fully explain the physics of surfaces. We tackle an issue that is never under consideration given the generic hostile conditions to the propagation of light under resonant absorption. Unlike most noble metals, aluminum displays Lorentz-like behavior and interband transitions centered near 810 nm, thus splitting the plasmonic range in an atypical manner and setting its linear and nonlinear optical properties apart. Studies of aluminum nanostructures having complex topologies abound, as do reported inconsistencies in the linear spectral response of surface plasmons and harmonic generation. Our experimental observations of second harmonic generation from aluminum nanolayers show that bound electrons are responsible for a unique signature neither predicted nor observed previously: a hole in the second harmonic spectrum. A hydrodynamic-Maxwell theory explains these findings exceptionally well and becomes the basis for renewed studies of surface physics.

We report experimental observations and numerical simulations of second and third harmonic generation from a gold nanograting, which exhibits a plasmonic resonance in the near infrared. The resonance is tunable, with a spectral position that depends on the angle of incidence. All things being equal, the enhancement of nonlinear optical processes produced by the field localization in the nanograting when compared with a flat gold mirror manifests itself dramatically from the ultraviolet to the visible range: second harmonic generation conversion efficiencies increase by more than three orders of magnitude, while we report a third harmonic generation conversion efficiency enhancement factor of 3200, both in excellent agreement with our theoretical predictions. The clear inferences one may draw from our results are that our model describes the dynamics with unprecedented accuracy and that much remains to be revealed in the development of nonlinear optics of metals at the nanoscale.

We show that an appropriately designed chalcogenide metasurface allows the enhancement of harmonic generation in the UV range, a regime that conventional wisdom deems inaccessible because of absorption. Here we exploit a combination of the photonic band structure that forms when stacking As _2 S _3 metasurfaces, phase-locking, nonlinear dispersion, and improved field localization to enhance third harmonic conversion efficiency. We demonstrate an improvement of two orders of magnitude with respect to the single layer counterpart notwithstanding the fact that the harmonic signal is tuned deep in the absorption range at 285 nm.

We investigate the linear response of single and multiple graphene sheets embedded in quarter-wave one-dimensional photonic crystals (PhCs) in terms of absorption and losses. In particular, we show that it is possible to achieve near-perfect narrowband absorption when a single monolayer graphene is sandwiched between two PhC mirrors with optimized pair numbers. The simulations reveal that the resonant wavelength and the total absorption frequency may be tuned by tilting the angle of incidence of the impinging source. We also show that the losses, related to the dielectric materials constituting the one-dimensional PhC, can degrade the optical performance of the device. Conversely, by arranging the same dielectric slabs in a different order (supercell), it is possible to achieve a broadband absorption that is almost constant over a wide range of angle of incidence. In this configuration, the absorption and the bandwidth can be tuned by varying the supercell geometry. These features make these devices attractive for different applications ranging from tunable and saturable absorbers for short-pulse lasers to graphene-based photodetectors.

We present a detailed analysis of the optical properties of one-dimensional arrays of slits in metal films. Although enhanced transmission windows are dominated by Fabry-Perot cavity modes localized inside the slits, the periodicity introduces surface modes that can either enhance or inhibit light transmission. We thus illustrate the interaction between cavity modes and surface modes in both finite and infinite arrays of slits. In particular we study a grating that clearly separates surface plasmon effects from Wood-Rayleigh anomalies. The periodicity of the grating induces a strong plasmonic band gap that inhibits coupling to the cavity modes for frequencies near the center of the band gap, thereby reducing the transmission of the grating. Strong field localization at the high energy plasmonic band edge enhances coupling to the cavity modes while field localization at the low energy band edge leads to weak cavity coupling and reduced transmission.

A lithium fluoride crystal slab was irradiated in air with a proton beam of nominal 7 MeV energy at a linear accelerator that is under development at ENEA C.R. Frascati. The irradiation generated a spatial distribution of stable colour centres in the crystal that could be detected as a luminescent image under blue-light excitation in a fluorescence microscope. The reconstruction of the whole Bragg curve from the luminescent image is here demonstrated for the first time by taking into account finite proton-energy bandwidth and saturation of defect concentration due to high absorbed dose. The obtained results confirm lithium fluoride detectors based on visible photoluminescence of radiation-induced aggregate colour centres as reliable candidate devices for advanced proton-beam diagnostics. An innovative diamond detector layout is presented that is designed to operate at high temperature under intense neutron and gamma fluxes. It is made of a 500 μm “electronic grade” diamond film with 100 nm thick Ag metal contacts deposited onto each surface of the film by means of thermal evaporation. A thick layer of 6LiF has been deposited on top of one of the two Ag contacts to make the detector sensitive to thermal neutrons. The device was tested at the ISIS spallation neutron source (Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, UK) using the INES beam line. The detector was continuously irradiated for 100 hours in vacuum , exposed to a neutron flux of about 106 n cm−2 s−1 at a temperature . The aim of this experiment was to study the time dependence of the diamond detector performance while operating at high temperature under irradiation, providing a first experimental proof of reliable continuous operation for 100 hours at high temperature in a harsh environment.
