1. Nesting habitat characteristics of flatback Natator depressus, green Chelonia mydas and loggerhead Caretta caretta turtles in eastern Queensland, Australia

Abstract

Coastal areas provide essential habitats for marine turtle nesting and hatching, but they are under increasing threat due to climate change and other anthropogenic impacts. Very little is known about the nesting habitat characteristics of flatback Natator depressus, green Chelonia mydas and loggerhead Caretta caretta turtles in eastern Queensland, which limits our ability to evaluate which nesting beaches are at risk due to anthropogenic and environmental disturbances and prioritise conservation and monitoring actions. Here, we used generalised linear models to investigate the relationship between the presence/absence of flatback, green and loggerhead turtle nests and environmental and topographic characteristics of 237 potential nesting sites along the central and southern coasts of Queensland. The presence of nesting flatback turtles was strongly correlated with the mainland and non-coral cay islands with decreasing latitude, as there is an interaction between site type and latitude. In contrast, green turtles preferred to nest on coral cays rather than mainland and island beaches. Loggerhead turtles were more likely to nest on coral cays, the mainland, then islands, with presence increasing with latitude. Among these site types and higher latitudes, presence was stronger on sheltered than on semi-exposed beaches. Identifying environmental and topographical features influencing the presence of nesting flatback, green and loggerhead turtles is an important first step to improve the conservation of these species by prioritising sites for monitoring and managing threats to important beaches.

Abstract

Understanding green turtle habitat use during the nesting season is important for informing management decisions relating to green turtles and ecosystems that support them. Despite patterns such as migration being described, few studies investigate behaviour during the inter-nesting period. This research aims to describe and quantify the spatial distribution patterns of green turtles during 2 nesting seasons on Raine Island in the northern Great Barrier Reef. Satellite telemetry data were used to analyse the inter-nesting movements and patterns of green turtles in 2017 (n = 19) and 2018 (n = 20). The inter-nesting period ranged from 51 to 100 d (76.33 ± 15.98 d) across both seasons. The average inter-nesting area of individual turtles did not differ between nesting seasons (2017: 12.31 ± 13.22 km2, 2018: 12.01 ± 21.92 km2). In addition, it was established that 39 individuals are a sufficient sample size to describe the spatial distribution. Approximately half of the tracked individuals remained at the same reef for their entire inter-nesting season (n = 19), and half used habitat on nearby reefs (n = 20). Most turtles showed fidelity to Raine Island as a nesting site (n = 37), laying all their clutches on the island. However, 2 individuals travelled 479 and 337 km during the inter-nesting period. This study thus highlights where the habitats used by green turtles during the inter-nesting season are and how they are used. Therefore, management strategies and conservation decisions can be informed to maintain the viability of these essential habitats.

Abstract

ABSTRACT: The use of veterinary drugs is of similar importance to that of human drugs in addressing health challenges. In this context, pharmaceuticals and their metabolites inevitably enter soil and water in unknown quantities. Therefore, this study collects and analyzes drug data from 2020 for 50 dairy farms located in Germany. The most frequently used substance group is antibiotics (40.13%), followed by antiphlogistics (18.86%), antiparasitics (13.09%), and hormones (9.29%). Treatment frequencies record the number of days per year on which an average animal on a farm was treated with a substance. The calculated values range from 0.94 to 21.69 d/yr and are distributed heterogeneously across farms. In this study, on average, a cow was treated on 6 d in 2020: 2.34 d with antibiotics, 1.07 d with antiphlogistics, 0.76 d with antiparasitics, and 0.41 d with hormones. In addition to individual farm management practices, other factors are related to treatment frequency. Farms with a veterinary care contract used more hormonal substances than farms without a care contract. In addition, higher milk yield coincides with more frequent treatments with antiphlogistic or hormonal substances. Other related factors include grazing, longevity, farm size, and use of a claw bath. Our study represents an important first step in describing the amounts and determinants of veterinary drugs used in livestock farming. Such insights on magnitudes and farm parameters are essential to estimate potential environmental effects and derive strategies to reduce veterinary drug use.

4. Occurrence of leatherback turtles around Australia

Abstract

Leatherback turtles Dermochelys coriacea are a pelagic species, globally endangered due to multiple anthropogenic impacts. Although protected under Australian legislation, species-specific practical protection has been hampered by sparse information about leatherback distribution in Australian waters. To fill this gap, we obtained records of leatherback interactions with fisheries gear, opportunistic sightings at sea, beach stranding events and non-target capture in shark control programs. We evaluated the temporal and geographic distribution of records and assessed potential bias in observation opportunity based on human population density and fishery activity. Based on 1073 leatherback observations from 1990 to 2022, we found that sightings were unevenly distributed right around Australia, encompassing longitudes from 105.4°E to 165.1°E and latitudes from 43.7°S to 10°S. In the extreme southeast of Australia, hotspots were apparent during December to March (austral summer). In temperate and subtropical latitudes to the west and east of Australia, hotspots appeared predominantly during June, July and August (austral winter), but were also apparent, albeit weaker, to the east in all other months. Our results confirm that the species is present around Australia in all months of the year and has a much wider geographic and offshore distribution around Australia than previously reported. Hence, we inferred that Australian waters are highly important for migrating and foraging leatherbacks from subpopulations breeding in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, all of which are at high risk of extinction, and we suggest that Australian management agencies have crucial roles in protecting these endangered animals.

5. Intraspecific variability in flatback turtle habitat use: δ15N as an indicator of foraging locations

Abstract

Identifying migration routes and key habitats is critical for the management and conservation of migratory species. Tracking and stable isotope analysis (SIA), particularly of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N), are often used to study animal movements, with SIA particularly useful when animals move through isotopic gradients. Marine turtles are typically highly migratory, moving between nesting and foraging grounds often located 100s-1000s km apart. The flatback turtle Natator depressus is endemic to the Australian continental shelf. Satellite tracking (n = 44) and SIA (n = 33) of females nesting in eastern Queensland, Australia, were used to identify main foraging areas, describe intraspecific variation in the location of foraging areas, and determine if δ13C and/or δ15N values can be used to identify foraging regions. Although foraging grounds were widely dispersed, tracking identified 3 main foraging regions. SIA agreed with tracking, indicating foraging site fidelity. Generalized linear models and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) were used to estimate how well δ13C/δ15N and nesting sites can perform as indicators of broad foraging regions and to predict foraging regions for turtles with no tracking data. δ15N was a strong predictor of the foraging region. LDA correctly classified the foraging region of 94% of individuals and was suitable to predict foraging regions of untracked individuals. A strong negative linear relationship between turtle δ15N and foraging latitude indicates the presence of a δ15N isoscape along the eastern Queensland coast. This is the first demonstration of an isoscape for the region, which should be useful for studying and monitoring the habitat use of flatback turtles and other migratory species.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE Clerkship grades are a component of determining a residency candidate's competitiveness. In 2017, the University of Minnesota Medical School's pediatric clerkship transitioned its standardized multiple-choice exam, the Aquifer Pediatrics Examination, to pass/fail with eligibility for honors being determined by clinical performance, not exam performance. We assessed the effect this change had on Aquifer exam performance and evaluated for correlation between Aquifer exam performance and clinical evaluation scores in order to gather insight into the validity of each type of assessment with respect to one another. METHODS We analyzed de-identified data from 750 medical students between the academic years of 2016 to 2017 and 2019 to 2020. Individual Aquifer exam scores were compared to individual clinical performance scores. Differences in exam performance before and after the transition to pass/fail were investigated with a two-sample t -test and Cohen's d for effect size. RESULTS No correlation was found between Aquifer exam scores and clinical performance scores. 7. Patterns of nesting behaviour and nesting success for green turtles at Raine Island, Australia

Abstract

To understand how turtles use the nesting habitat at Raine Island across a nesting season, and how the turtles respond to the restoration of the island’s dune systems, we identified 534 nesting events for 39 green turtles Chelonia mydas across 2 breeding seasons using data derived from satellite tags. Tracked turtles laid between 4 and 10 clutches of eggs. Patterns of nesting success varied between individuals, within and between seasons. Nesting success was higher in 2018-19 (57%) than 2017-18 (45%), and in both years, nesting success was lowest between October and early January (50%). The density of female turtles ashore was lower in 2018-19, and likely explains higher nesting success in 2018-19 because competition for nest space was lower. In 2017-18, females had more attempts per clutch, and the attempts were around 90 min longer. Consequently, energy required to lay a clutch of eggs in 2017-18 was significantly higher than in 2018-19, highlighting potential costs of lower nesting success rates on reproductive output. The area of beach re-profiled as an intervention in 2014 and 2017 was a nesting hotspot in 2017-18. However, in 2018-19, the area was not used to the same extent, and the nesting hotspot occurred on the north-eastern unaltered beach. Collectively, the tracking of turtles across the whole nesting season enabled us to assess overall beach use and nesting site fidelity of green turtles at Raine Island. Results will aid future planning and management of beach restoration activities at turtle nesting sites.

10. Effect of sea turtle rehabilitation centres in Queensland, Australia, on people’s perceptions of conservation

Abstract

Sea turtles are found worldwide, with all 7 species considered species of conservation concern. The public has seen sea turtle rehabilitation centres as an important tool for conserving sea turtle populations. However, educating the public regarding threats to sea turtles and how they can minimise these threats by making a change in their own lives may be more beneficial than rehabilitation alone, in terms of the ability to restore turtle numbers. In order to determine the educational role of rehabilitation centres, 245 surveys were distributed at several Australian-based rehabilitation centres. The survey was in 2 parts. The first part collected information about visitor’s knowledge of threats, their willingness to pay for conservation, and socio-economic information. The second part determined what threats visitors had learned about, whether visitors would make a change to help support sea turtle conservation, and whether they would be willing to pay more for conservation following their visit. Overall, results showed that all visitors to the sea turtle rehabilitation centres were willing to make a change in their lives to help protect sea turtles. Additionally, the majority of visitors were willing to donate annually to sea turtle conservation. The extra revenue raised could be used for conservation purposes and further research to address the threats sea turtles face. Combining the opportunity for visitors to observe sea turtles up close and learn about threats and how they can be minimised at rehabilitation centres will assist in increasing population sizes and protecting them into the future.

Abstract

Abstract A search is made for charged Higgs bosons predicted by Two-Higgs-Doublet extensions of the Standard Model (2HDM) using electron-positron collision data collected by the OPAL experiment at $\sqrt{s}=189\mbox{--}209\ \mbox{GeV}$ , corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 600 pb−1. Charged Higgs bosons are assumed to be pair-produced and to decay into $\mathrm{q} \bar{\mathrm{q}}$ , τν τ or AW±. No signal is observed. Model-independent limits on the charged Higgs-boson production cross section are derived by combining these results with previous searches at lower energies. Under the assumption $\mathrm{BR} (\mathrm{H}^{\pm} \to \tau\nu_{\tau}) + \mathrm{BR} (\mathrm{H}^{\pm} \to \mathrm{q} \bar{\mathrm{q}}) = 1$ , motivated by general 2HDM type II models, excluded areas on the $[m_{\mathrm{H}^{\pm}} , \mathrm{BR} (\mathrm {H}^{\pm} \to \tau\nu_{\tau})]$ plane are presented and charged Higgs bosons are excluded up to a mass of 76.3 GeV at 95 % confidence level, independent of the branching ratio BR(H±→τν τ). A scan of the 2HDM type I model parameter space is performed and limits on the Higgs-boson masses $m_{\mathrm{H}^{\pm}}$ and m A are presented for different choices of tanβ.

Abstract

The composition and thickness of thin films determine their physical properties, making the ability to measure the number of atoms of different elements in films both technologically and scientifically important. For thin films, below a certain thickness, the X-ray fluorescence intensity of an element is proportional to the number of atoms. Converting this intensity to the number of atoms per unit area is challenging due to experimental geometries and other correction factors. Hence, the ratio of intensities is more commonly used to determine the composition in terms of element ratios using standards or a model. Here, the number of atoms per unit area was determined using X-ray structure information for over 20 different crystallographically aligned samples with integral unit cell thicknesses. Four members of the DY-67x cyanine family composed of the same main chromophore, but substituted with a sequentially increasing number of sulfonate groups (n = 1−4; DY-675, DY-676, DY-677, DY-678, respectively), were incubated with plasma proteins dissolved in phosphate-buffered saline. Protein binding was assessed by absorption spectroscopy, gel electrophoresis, ultrafiltration, and dialysis. Distribution of dye in organs was studied by intraveneous injection of 62 nmol dye/kg body weight into mice (n = 12; up to 180 minutes postinjection) using whole-body near-infrared fluorescence imaging. Spectroscopic studies, gel electrophoresis, and dialysis demonstrated reduced protein binding with increasing number of sulfonate groups. The bovine serum albumin binding constant of the most hydrophobic dye, DY-675, is 18 times higher than that of the most hydrophilic fluorophore, DY-678. In vivo biodistribution analysis underlined a considerable influence of dye hydrophilicity on biodistribution and excretion pathways, with the more hydrophobic dyes, DY-675 and DY-676, accumulating in the liver, followed by strong fluorescence signals in bile and gut owing to accumulation in feces and comparatively hydrophilic DY-678-COOH accumulating in the bladder. Our results demonstrate the possibility of selectively controlling dye-protein interactions and, thus, biodistribution and excretion pathways via proper choice of the fluorophore's substitution pattern. This underlines the importance of structure-property relationships for fluorescent labels. Moreover, our data could provide the basis for the rationalization of future contrast agent developments.

Abstract

Miniaturization of microelectronic devices has reached a fundamental scaling limit; parasitic electron tunneling through the ultrathin gate dielectric has become a major obstacle to continued device performance. One method for overcoming this limitation is to replace SiO2 gate dielectrics with thicker high-κ metal oxides. La2O3 and ZrO2 are two such materials that have received significant interest, but low stability to post-anneal water absorption and low-crystallization temperatures, respectively, have limited their widespread use. We recently reported an aqueous, all-inorganic route to high-κ lanthanum zirconium oxide dielectric films (1/1 La/Zr), which mitigates the disadvantages of the binary oxides but maintains their high-κ properties. In this contribution, we vary the La/Zr ratio of the aqueous precursor to optimize the properties of the resulting films. We find that the La0.20Zr0.80Oy composition is optimal for providing a high dielectric constant (∼18.2 at 600 °C) while maintaining excellent film morphology and stability. 20% La was necessary to prevent crystallization up to 600 °C, but films with higher La content displayed diminished dielectric constants and decreased stability towards post-anneal water absorption.

Abstract

Several members of a new family of heterostructures [(LaSe)1.17]1Vn(1+y)+1Se2n+2 with n = 1, 2, and 3 were prepared using a diffusion constrained, kinetically controlled synthesis approach. Specular diffraction patterns collected as a function of annealing temperature show the evolution of designed precursors into highly ordered heterostructures. Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) images reveal that the structure of n = 3 consists of rock salt structured LaSe bilayers alternating with vanadium selenide layers of varying thickness, which are structurally closely related to V3Se4. Interplanar distances obtained from the STEM images were successfully used as the starting point for Rietveld refinements of the specular diffraction patterns of these crystallographically aligned compounds. Abstract

Submarine canyons are common features of the coastal ocean. Although they are known to be hotspots of turbulence that enhance diapycnal transport in their stratified waters, the dynamics of canyon mixing processes are poorly understood. Most studies of internal wave dynamics within canyons have focused on a handful of canyons with along-axis slopes less steep than semidiurnal (D2) internal wave characteristics (subcritical). Here, we present the first tidally-resolving observations within a canyon with a steeply sloping axis (supercritical). A process study consisting of two 24-hour shipboard stations and a profiling mooring was conducted in the La Jolla Canyon off the coast of La Jolla, CA. Baroclinic energy flux is oriented up-canyon and decreases from 182 ± 18 W m−1 at the canyon mouth to 46 ± 5 W m−1 near the head. The ratio of horizontal kinetic energy to available potential energy and the observed group speed of each mode are lower than expected for freely propagating D2 internal waves at each station, indicating partial reflection. Harmonic analysis reveals that variance is dominated by the D2 tide. Moving up-canyon, the relative importance of D2 decreases and its higher harmonics are needed to account for a majority of the observed variance, indicating steepening. Steep internal tides cause large isopycnal displacements (∼50 m in 100m water depth) and high strain events. These events coincide with enhanced O(10−7 -10−5 m2 s−3) dissipation of turbulent kinetic energy at mid-depths.

Here, we detail diagnostic errors and their relationship to inappropriate antimicrobial courses.DESIGNRetrospective cohort studySETTINGVeterans Affairs hospitalPATIENTSA cohort of 500 randomly selected inpatients with an antimicrobial courseMETHODSBlinded reviewers judged the accuracy of the initial provider diagnosis for the condition that led to an antimicrobial course and whether the course was appropriate.RESULTSThe diagnoses were correct in 291 cases (58%), incorrect in 156 cases (31%), and of indeterminate accuracy in 22 cases (4%). In the remaining 31 cases (6%), the diagnosis was a sign or symptom rather than a syndrome or disease. The odds ratio of a correct diagnosis was 4.3 (95% confidence interval [CI], 2.2–8.5) if the index condition was related to the reason for admission. When the diagnosis was correct, 181 of 292 courses (62%) were appropriate, compared with only 10 of 208 (5%) when the diagnosis was incorrect or indeterminate or when providers were treating a sign or symptom rather than a syndrome or disease (PCONCLUSIONSDiagnostic accuracy is important for optimal inpatient antimicrobial use. Abstract

Reward mediates the acquisition and long-term retention of procedural skills in humans. Yet, learning under rewarded conditions is highly variable across individuals and the mechanisms that determine interindividual variability in rewarded learning are not known. We postulated that baseline functional connectivity in a large-scale frontostriatal-limbic network could predict subsequent interindividual variability in rewarded learning. Resting-state functional MRI was acquired in two groups of subjects (n = 30) who then trained on a visuomotor procedural learning task with or without reward feedback. We then tested whether baseline functional connectivity within the frontostriatal-limbic network predicted memory strength measured immediately, 24 h and 1 month after training in both groups. We found that connectivity in the frontostriatal-limbic network predicted interindividual variability in the rewarded but not in the unrewarded learning group. Prediction was strongest for long-term memory. Similar links between connectivity and reward-based memory were absent in two control networks, a fronto-parieto-temporal language network and the dorsal attention network. The results indicate that baseline functional connectivity within the frontostriatal-limbic network successfully predicts long-term retention of rewarded learning.

Abstract

In this paper, we consider classical circle geometries and connect them with places of planar Cayley–Klein geometries. There are, in principle, only three types of \( {{\mathbb{R}}^2} \)-ring structures and, thus, only three types of corresponding circle geometries. Thus, each generalization to non-Euclidean planes turns out to be just another representation of the classical Euclidean cases. We believe that even the Euclidean cases of circle geometries comprise, in principle, already all non-Euclidean cases. Representations of such non-Euclidean circle geometries might also be of interest in themselves. For example, among the planar Cayley–Klein geometries, the quasi-elliptic and quasi-hyperbolic geometry usually are neglected. They can be treated similarly to the isotropic Mobius geometry by suitable projections of the Blaschke cylinder.

Das Risiko fur einen prolapschirurgischen Eingriff bei der Frau liegt heute bei ca. 11%, in einem Drittel der Falle handelt es sich um eine Rezidivoperation. Abstract

A new scalar resonance, called the radion, with couplings to fermions and bosons similar to those of the Higgs boson, is predicted in the framework of Randall-Sundrum models, proposed solutions to the hierarchy problem with one extra dimension. An important distinction between the radion and the Higgs boson is that the radion would couple directly to gluon pairs, and in particular its decay products would include a significant fraction of gluon jets. The radion had the same quantum numbers as the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson, and therefore they can mix, with the resulting mass eigenstates having properties different from those of the SM Higgs boson. Existing searches for the Higgs boson are sensitive to the possible production and decay of radions and Higgs bosons in these models. For the first time, searches for the SM Higgs boson and flavour-independent and decay-mode independent searches for a neutral Higgs boson are used in combination to explore the parameter space of the Randall-Sundrum model. In the dataset recorded by the OPAL experiment at LEP, no evidence for radion or Higgs particle production was observed in any of those searches. Abstract

We present a determination of the LEP beam energy using "radiative return" fermion-pair events recorded at centre-of-mass energies from 183 GeV to 209 GeV. We find no evidence of a disagreement between the OPAL data and the LEP Energy Workings Group's standard calibration. Including the energy- averaged 11 MeV uncertainty in the standard determination, the beam energy we obtain from the OPAL data is higher than that obtained from the LEP calibration by 0+-34(stat.)+-27(syst.)MeV, Comment: 24 pages, 5 figures, Submitted to Phys. Abstract

A search for single production of doubly-charged Higgs bosons has been performed using 600.7 pb^-1 of e+e- collision data with sqrt(s)=189--209GeV collected by the OPAL detector at LEP. No evidence for the existence of H++/-- is observed. Upper limits on the Yukawa coupling of the H++/-- to like-signed electron pairs are derived. Additionally, indirect constraints on the Yukawa coupling from Bhabha scattering, where the H++/-- would contribute via t-channel exchange, are derived for M(H++/--) < 2TeV. These are the first results for both a single production search and constraints from Bhabha scattering reported from LEP., 20 pages, 9 figures, Submitted to Phys. Lett. B

Abstract

A search for stable and long-lived massive particles of electric charge |Q/e|=1 or fractional charges of 2/3, 4/3, and 5/3 is reported using data collected by the OPAL detector at LEP, at centre-of-mass energies from 130 to 209 GeV. These particles are assumed to be pair-produced in e+e- collisions and not to interact strongly. No evidence for the production of these particles was observed. Model-independent upper limits on the production cross-section between 0.005 and 0.028 pb have been derived for scalar and spin-1/2 particles with charge +-1. Within the framework of the Constrained Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (CMSSM), this implies a lower limit of 98.0 (98.5) GeV on the mass of long-lived right (left)- handed scalar muons and scalar taus. Long-lived charged heavy leptons and charginos are excluded for masses below 102.0 GeV. For particles with fractional charge +-2/3, +-4/3, and +-5/3, the upper limit on the production cross-section varies between 0.005 and 0.020 pb. All mass and cross-section limits are derived at the 95% confidence level and are valid for particles with lifetimes longer than 10-6s. Abstract

A search was performed for charginos with masses close to the mass of the lightest neutralino in e+e- collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 189-209 GeV recorded by the OPAL detector at LEP. Events were selected if they had an observed high-energy photon from initial state radiation, reducing the dominant background from two-photon scattering to a negligible level. No significant excess over Standard Model expectations has been observed in the analysed data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 570pb-1. Upper limits were derived on the chargino pair-productin cross-section, and lower limits on the chargino mass were derived in the context of the Minimal Supersymmetric Extension of the Standard Model for the gravity and anomaly mediated Supersymmetry breaking scenarios., 26 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

Searches for first generation scalar and vector leptoquarks, and for squarks in R-parity violating SUSY models with the direct decay of the squark into Standard Model particles, have been performed using e+e- collisions collected with the OPAL detector at LEP at e+e- centre-of-mass energies between 189 and 209 GeV. No excess of events is found over the expectation from Standard Model background processes. Limits are computed on the leptoquark couplings for different values of the branching ratio to electron-quark final states.

Abstract

Interindividual differences in the effects of reward on performance are prevalent and poorly understood, with some individuals being more dependent than others on the rewarding outcomes of their actions. The origin of this variability in reward dependence is unknown. Here, we tested the relationship between reward dependence and brain structure in healthy humans. Subjects trained on a visuomotor skill-acquisition task and received performance feedback in the presence or absence of reward. Reward dependence was defined as the statistical trial-by-trial relation between reward and subsequent performance. We report a significant relationship between reward dependence and the lateral prefrontal cortex, where regional gray-matter volume predicted reward dependence but not feedback alone. Multivoxel pattern analysis confirmed the anatomical specificity of this relationship. These results identified a likely anatomical marker for the prospective influence of reward on performance, which may be of relevance in neurorehabilitative settings.

Abstract

As the Internet is used increasingly as a platform for business transactions, security becomes a primary issue for Internet applications. Some applications are too sensitive for software-only security mechanisms. Higher levels of protection can be achieved with smart-card-based authentication schemes and transaction protocols. In this paper, we provide examples of typical banking applications implemented with smart cards using symmetrical (DES) and asymmetrical (RSA) cryptography. We present a pure JavaTM architecture for such applications, which is intended for use on standard Web application servers and client devices enabled for Web browsing and the Java language. It employs applets on the client side to access smart cards via the OpenCard Framework. The applets communicate with authentication servlets or application servlets on the server side and act as a mediator between the smart card and the application logic on the server.

Abstract

Individuals who experience interpersonal sensitivity (IPS) may be at an increased risk for developing eating disorder symptomatology. The purpose of the present study was to assess the predictive capacity of IPS and related constructs in the development of bulimic symptomatology both cross-sectionally and longitudinally while controlling for depressive symptoms. Participants were 119 female undergraduate psychology students attending a private mid-size Midwestern university. Data were collected at both the beginning and end of the academic semester. Participants completed the Center for Epidemiological Study - Depression Scale, Brief Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale, Interpersonal Sensitivity Measure, and the Bulimia Test - Revised. The Fragile Inner Self subscale of the IPSM was found to significantly account for additional variability in BULIT-R scores after controlling for depression both cross-sectionally and longitudinally (8% and 2%, respectively). IPS is a suitable candidate for inclusion in the dual pathway model of bulimic symptomatology.

Objectifs Une bonne fonction respiratoire est essentielle pour une palliation univentriculaire. Une paralysie diaphragmatique, par lesion du nerf phrenique, peut necessiter une ventilation mecanique prolongee et grever le pronostic de ces patients. Le but etait de comparer les resultats des plicatures diaphragmatiques apres reparation biventriculaire ou palliation univentriculaire. Materiels et methodes Il s’agit d’une analyse retrospective de 2005–2015. Resultats Vingt-cinq patients sur les 27 cas recenses de paralysie ont beneficie d’une plicature soit 0,3 % des 8120 patients operes, dont 11 apres palliation univentriculaire. L’âge moyen a la plicature est de 10 mois pour le groupe univentriculaire contre 2,1 mois pour le groupe biventriculaire ( p = 0,65), avec un delai median chirurgie-plicature de 16 contre 14 jours. Il n’y a pas de difference en termes de duree de ventilation, reanimation et hospitalisation apres plicature (24 h, 3j, 10 j groupe univentriculaire contre 24,5 h, 3j et 11j) ou de survie entre les groupes. Conclusion L’incidence des paralysies diaphragmatiques est tres faible dans notre unite. La plicature est sure et efficace, pour les reparations biventriculaires comme les palliations univentriculaires. Une realisation precoce evite une ventilation prolongee.

Abstract

Estimates of the characteristics and proportional importance of water mass factors are determined by exploratory multivariate Q-mode factor analysis (QMFA) of Pacific Ocean hydrographic data from the region north of 30°S. The inter-tracer ratios between potential temperature, salinity, the calculated parameters “NO” and “PO” and silicate are used to establish a matrix of similarity coefficients between all station locations. Its rotated eigenvectors (“factors”) are viewed as distinct water types of the system. On individual key density surfaces QMFA shows that the spatial distribution of relative contributions from the primary factors can be linked to known or suspected water types and their subsequent spreading. The minor factors reflect smaller perturbations of the dominating ratios. Another QMFA was done in three dimensions by combining all density layers to determine factors derived from diapycnal as well as isopycnal property gradients. Two primary factors represent the opposing vertical temperature and salinity-nutrients gradient: “a deep water melange”, which concentrates in the Northeast Pacific (maximum where σ 1 , ≥ 31.93), and a “subtropical thermocline” factor (maximum on σ θ = 25.80) centered in the subtropical gyres. The spatially uneven decrease of relative contribution from a “shallow” factor as one moves down from the upper to the lower thermocline suggests areas where the exchange with the “deeper” factor may he enhanced.

Abstract

To assess the safety and efficacy of erbium:YAG laser-assisted cataract removal.A total of 15 patients underwent cataractous lens removal. All the patients had a visual acuity of 20/50 or worse secondary to senile cataract. The endothelial cell count was calculated preoperatively and at 6 weeks postoperatively. A 2.94-micron-wavelength erbium: YAG laser with a zirconium-fluoride fiber optic and silica tip was used to fracture and emulsify the nucleus. The erbium:YAG laser was chosen due to its high absorption in water, a primary component of a cataractous lens.The postoperative visual acuity was 20/30 or better in all the eyes that were treated with surgery. The endothelial cell loss at 3 months was 0% to 10%. No laser-related complications were noted. A conversion to an ultrasound surgical technique was utilized in six cases. Vitreous loss occurred in one case due to the posterior extension of an anterior capsulotomy tear.This study demonstrated the ability of an erbium:YAG laser system to safely and effectively emulsify the lens nucleus. Laser-assisted cataract surgery is a promising new clinical procedure.

Abstract

The 4-slice CT that forms part of the GE Infinia Hawkeye-4 SPECT-CT scanner (Hawkeye) is evaluated against the diagnostic 16-slice CT that is incorporated in the GE Discovery ST PET-CT system (DST). The x-ray tube of the slow-rotating Hawkeye system (23 s/rotation) operates at approximately a third of the dose of diagnostic systems as used for conventional diagnostic imaging. Image reconstruction is optimized for low noise. High-contrast spatial resolution significantly falls behind diagnostic figures: the average of MTF50 and MTF10 (resolution where the MTF has fallen to 50% and 10%) is 2.8 ± 0.1 cm[?]1 for Hawkeye and 5.3 ± 0.1 cm[?]1 for the DST (standard reconstruction filters). Resolution in the direction of the couch movement (z coordinate) is governed by the fixed Hawkeye slice width of 5 mm. Reconstruction accuracy is found to be increased by reducing the default z increment from 4.4 mm to 2.2 mm. Low-contrast object detectability is superior compared with diagnostic systems operating in the Hawkeye dose range. In the diagnostic dose regime, however, small low-contrast details remain visible in DST that are not detectable with Hawkeye. Although not of diagnostic quality, the low-dose Hawkeye provides appropriate data for SPECT attenuation correction and anatomical localization capability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This letter describes a direct search for pair produced magnetic monopoles in e+e- collisions. The analysis is based on 62.7 pb^-1 of data collected with the OPAL detector at an average centre-of-mass energy of sqrt(s)= 206.3GeV. The monopole signal was assumed to be characterized by two back-to-back particles with an anomalously high ionization energy loss de/dx in the tracking chambers. No evidence for production of monopoles was observed. Upper limits were obtained on the magnetic monopole pair-production cross-section (sigma) in the mass range 45 GeV/c^2, Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, Submitted to Phys. Letts. B

Abstract

Non-commutative QED would lead to deviations from the Standard Model depending on a new energy scale ΛNC and a unique direction in space defined by two angles η and ξ. In this analysis, η is defined as the angle between the unique direction and the rotation axis of the earth. The predictions of a tree level calculation for the process e+e−→γγ are evaluated for the specific orientation of the OPAL detector and compared to the measurements. Distributions of the polar and azimuthal photon angles are used to extract limits on the energy scale ΛNC depending on the model parameter η. It is shown that the time dependence of the total cross-section could be used to determine the model parameter ξ if there were a detectable signal. This is the first experimental study of non-commutative QED at an e+e− collider.

48. Composition, structure, and semiconducting properties of Mg x Zr2−x N2 thin films.

Abstract

Synthesis and characterization of MgxZr2−xN2 (0.5 ≤ x ≤ 1.8) thin films deposited by reactive magnetron co-sputtering in nitrogen plasma is reported. Composition measurements show that nitrides with low oxygen content (less than 1%) can be formed up to x = 1.0, at which point an increase in oxygen content is observed. Up to composition of x = 1.6 the MgxZr2−xN2 thin films form in a rocksalt-derived crystal structure, as revealed by X-ray diffraction measurements. At x > 1.6 the films rapidly oxidize. The lattice constant of the stoichiometric MgZrN2 composition is a = 4.537 Å, and only small changes in lattice parameter are observed with changing composition. Electrical conductivity decreases by several orders of magnitude with increasing Mg-content. The conductivity of Mg-rich (x ≥ 1) films increases with increasing measurement temperature, indicating semiconducting character of Mg-rich MgxZr2−xN2. Optical absorption measurements of these Mg-rich samples show a clear absorption onset at 1.8 eV, also indicative of semiconducting behavior. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Heterostructures unconstrained by epitaxy have generated considerable excitement due to the discovery of emergent properties—properties not found in either constituent. Heterostructures enable the surfaces on either side of two-dimensional (2D) layers to be used to systematically investigate phenomena such as superconductivity and magnetism in the 2D limit. The ability to choose constituents facilitates the prediction of emergent properties created by the unusual coordination environments at incommensurate interfaces. There have already been many reviews on heterostructures, focusing on a variety of topics that reflect the diverse interest in this area as well as the potential for new technologies. Hence this review focuses mainly on the synthesis and structural characterization of heterostructures containing transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD). This review only briefly discusses 2D materials and TMD/TMD heterostructure devices and the performances that have been achieved. This review provides a historical context for the rapid development of this field and discusses proposed mechanisms for emergent properties. Up to now, the materials used in heterostructures have mainly been materials with 2D structures, as these compounds can be easily cleaved into ultrathin layers. This review discusses the expansion of heterostructure constituents to include materials that do not have 2D structures. Structural changes and charge redistribution between adjacent (or even more distant) layers are likely to be larger for 3D constituents than with 2D constituents based on known misfit layer compounds. Systematic changes in properties with layer thickness, layer sequences, and the identity of constituents will increase our understanding of emergent properties and how they can be optimized. Abstract

The hadronic structure of the photon F2gamma is measured as a function of Bjorken x and of the photon virtuality Q2 using deep-inelastic scattering data taken by the OPAL detector at LEP at e+e- centre-of-mass energies from 183 to 209 GeV. Previous OPAL measurements of the x dependence of F2gamma are extended to an average Q2 of =780GeV2 using data in the kinematic range 0.15 < x < 0.98. The Q2 evolution of F2gamma is studied for 12.1 < < 780GeV2 using three ranges of x. As predicted by QCD, the data show positive scaling violations in F2gamma for the central x region 0.10-0.60. Several parameterisations of F2gamma are in qualitative agreement with the measurements whereas the quark-parton model prediction fails to describe the data.
