In this paper, propagation properties of a parallel-plate waveguide with tunable artificial impedance surfaces as sidewalls are studied both analytically and numerically. The impedance surfaces comprise an array of patches over a dielectric slab with embedded metallic vias. The tunability of surfaces is achieved with varactors. Simple design equations for tunable artificial impedance surfaces, as well as dispersion equations for the TE and TM modes are presented. The propagation properties are studied in three different regimes: multimode waveguide, single-mode waveguide, and below-cutoff waveguide. The analytical results are verified with numerical simulations. Index Terms--High-impedance surface, impedance waveguide, propagation properties, tunable.

Simple analytical formulas are introduced for the grid impedance of electrically dense arrays of square patches and for the surface impedance of high-impedance surfaces based on the dense arrays of metal strips or square patches over ground planes. Emphasis is on the oblique-incidence excitation. The approach is based on the known analytical models for strip grids combined with the approximate Babinet principle for planar grids located at a dielectric interface. Analytical expressions for the surface impedance and reflection coefficient resulting from our analysis are thoroughly verified by full-wave simulations and compared with available data in open literature for particular cases. The results can be used in the design of various antennas and microwave or millimeter wave devices which use artificial impedance surfaces and artificial magnetic conductors (reflect-array antennas, tunable phase shifters, etc.), as well as for the derivation of accurate higher-order impedance boundary conditions for artificial (high-) impedance surfaces. As an example, the propagation properties of surface waves along the high-impedance surfaces are studied. Index Terms--Analytical model, high impedance surface, oblique incidence excitation.

We consider a novel method of cloaking objects from the surrounding electromagnetic fields in the microwave region. The method is based on transmission-line networks that simulate the wave propagation in the medium surrounding the cloaked object. The electromagnetic fields from the surrounding medium are coupled into the transmission-line network that guides the waves through the cloak thus leaving the cloaked object undetected. The cloaked object can be an array or interconnected mesh of small inclusions that fit inside the transmission-line network. Index Terms--Cloak, dispersion, isotropy, transmission-line network.

This paper presents a fast and easy to use method to determine permittivity and loss tangent in the frequency range of 75 to 325 GHz. To obtain the permittivity and the loss tangent of the test material, the reflection and transmission S-parameters of a waveguide section filled with the test material are measured using a vector network analyzer and then compared with the simulated plots from a full wave simulator (HFSS), or alternatively the measurement results are used in mathematical formulas. Low-profile antennas comprising a horizontal dipole above a high-impedance surface are analyzed. The emphasis of this paper is on the additional resonances of the radiating structure caused by surface waves propagating on the high-impedance surface. It is shown that such resonances can be favorably used for broadening the bandwidth of the antenna. The phenomenon is thoroughly modeled by exploiting a parallel between the HIS structure and a waveguide resonator. In the second part of the paper we discuss homogenized approaches for modeling the radiating properties of the antenna with emphasis to the phenomenon discussed in the first part. As it turns out, it is necessary to take into account the spatially dispersive properties of high-impedance surfaces, and most of the simplified models commonly used for analyzing high-impedance surface based antennas fail in predicting the discussed resonance mode. In a spatially dispersive medium, the electric dipole moment of an inclusion cannot be related to the macroscopic electric field through a local relation. Several recent works have emphasized the role of spatial dispersion in wire media, and demonstrated that arrays of parallel metallic wires may behave very differently from a uniaxial local material with negative permittivity. Here, we investigate the effect of spatial dispersion on reflection properties of the mushroom structure introduced by Sievenpiper, based on local and nonlocal homogenization methods. The objective of this paper is to clarify the role of spatial dispersion in the mushroom structure and demonstrate that, under some conditions, it is suppressed. The metamaterial substrate, or meta-surface is modeled as a wire medium covered with an impedance surface. Surprisingly, it is found that, in such a configuration, the effects of spatial dispersion may be nearly suppressed when the slab is electrically thin, and that the wire medium can be modeled very accurately using a local model. In this paper, a nonlocal homogenization model is proposed for the analysis of the spectrum of natural modes on sub-wavelength mushroom-type high-impedance surfaces composed of a capacitive grid connected to a grounded wire-medium (WM) slab. Modal characteristics of mushroom structures are studied in conjunction with the surface-wave and leaky-wave propagation on WM slabs based on local and nonlocal homogenization models, showing the importance of spatial dispersion (SD) in WM. It is shown that mushroom structures support proper real (bound) forward and backward modes, whose dispersion determines the stopband properties of the mushroom structure, and proper (exponentially decaying from the surface) and improper (exponentially growing from the surface) complex leaky-wave modes related to the backward and forward radiation, respectively. Results obtained by different homogenization models are compared leading to important conclusions. Specifically, an interesting observation concerns the mushroom structures with short vias, wherein the SD of the WM slab is significantly reduced, and the results of local and nonlocal homogenization models are in excellent agreement. The cloaking performance of two microwave cloaks, both based on the recently proposed transmission-line approach, are studied using commercial full-wave simulation software. The cloaks are shown to be able to reduce the total scattering cross sections of metallic objects of some restricted shapes and sizes. One of the studied cloaks is electrically small in diameter, and the other is electrically large, with the diameter equal to several wavelengths. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract: A backward-wave slab based on a capacitively and inductively loaded three-dimensional transmission-line network is designed in such a way that impedance-matching with free space is obtained. To enable field propagation from free space to the network and vice versa, the use of a transition layer is proposed. In this paper we study microstrip antenna miniaturization using partial filling of the antenna volume with dielectric materials. An analytical expression is derived for the quality factor of an antenna loaded with a combination of two different materials. This expression can be used to optimize the filling pattern for the design that most efficiently retains the impedance bandwidth after size reduction. Qualitative design rules are given, and a miniaturization example is provided where the antenna performance is compared for different filling patterns. In this paper, we verify experimentally the recently proposed theory on suppression of the spatial dispersion in an artificial plasma. We make use of the image principle and assume effectively local material parameters of the artificial plasma, in which the spatial dispersion has been suppressed, and measure the reflection from an impenetrable grounded surface. The plasma resonance can be clearly distinguished from the measurement results at the plasma frequency independently from the incidence angle.
