Mixed Rossby‐gravity (MRG) waves play a significant role in tropical variability. Their kinetic energy spectra exhibit maximal amplitudes at synoptic scales in the upper troposphere and at planetary scales in the upper stratosphere. The mechanism for different scale selection in the two regions has remained elusive. Here, we use a spherical barotropic model with the background zonal wind profiles derived from ERA5 reanalysis to show that the recently introduced MRG wave excitation mechanism − ${-}$ wave‐mean flow interactions produces MRG waves with the observed scale properties in the two regions. Simulations with idealized zonal jets show that the jet position determines the MRG scale selection: the closer the jet to the equator, the smaller the scale of the excited MRG waves. Therefore, midlatitude jets, such as found in the upper stratosphere, support the excitation of planetary‐scale MRG waves. Plain Language Summary: Mixed Rossby‐gravity (MRG) waves, which are important for tropical weather and climate, obtain different spatial scales in two distinct atmospheric regions: synoptic scales in the upper troposphere and planetary scales in the upper stratosphere. So far, the mechanism responsible for this behavior is not identified. In this study, we propose interactions involving waves that originate from the tropics and zonal jets (i.e., wave‐mean flow interactions) as the mechanism behind the observed MRG wave scales. We provide evidence by conducting numerical simulations with an idealized model that resolves MRG waves with high accuracy. We identify MRG waves generated by wave‐mean flow interactions and show that their peak scale can be attributed to the position of the jet. The closer the jet to the equator, the smaller the scale of generated MRG waves. This not only offers an explanation for the observed spatial scales of the tropospheric and stratospheric MRG waves, but also points out the importance of the background flow to correctly represent MRG waves in weather and climate models. We describe the development, tuning and climate of PLASIM-GENIE, a new intermediate complexity Atmosphere-Ocean Global Climate Model (AOGCM), built by coupling the Planet Simulator to the GENIE earth system model. PLASIM-GENIE supersedes "GENIE-2", a coupling of GENIE to the Reading IGCM. It has been developed to join the limited number of models that bridge the gap between EMICS with simplified atmospheric dynamics and state of the art AOGCMs. A 1000 year simulation with PLASIM-GENIE requires approximately two weeks on a single node of a 2.1 GHz AMD 6172 CPU. An important motivation for intermediate complexity models is the evaluation of uncertainty. We here demonstrate the tractability of PLASIM-GENIE ensembles by deriving a "subjective" tuning of the model with a 50 member ensemble of 1000 year simulations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A general circulation model of intermediate complexity with an idealized Earth-like aquaplanet setup is used to study the impact of changes in the oceanic heat transport on the global atmospheric circulation. Focus is on the atmospheric mean meridional circulation and global thermodynamic properties. The atmosphere counterbalances to a large extent the imposed changes in the oceanic heat transport, but, nonetheless, significant modifications to the atmospheric general circulation are found. Increasing the strength of the oceanic heat transport up to 2.5PW leads to an increase in the global mean near-surface temperature and to a decrease in its equator-to-pole gradient. For stronger transports, the gradient is reduced further, but the global mean remains approximately constant. This is linked to a cooling and a reversal of the temperature gradient in the tropics. Additionally, a stronger oceanic heat transport leads to a decline in the intensity and a poleward shift of the maxima of both the Hadley and Ferrel cells. Changes in zonal mean diabatic heating and friction impact the properties of the Hadley cell, while the behavior of the Ferrel cell is mostly controlled by friction. The efficiency of the climate machine, the intensity of the Lorenz energy cycle and the material entropy production of the system decline with increased oceanic heat transport. This suggests that the climate system becomes less efficient and turns into a state of reduced entropy production as the enhanced oceanic transport performs a stronger large-scale mixing between geophysical fluids with different temperatures, thus reducing the available energy in the climate system and bringing it closer to a state of thermal equilibrium. The atmospheric heat transport compensates the imposed oceanic heat transport changes to a large extent in conjunction with significant modification of the general circulation. Up to a maximum about 3PW, an increase of the oceanic heat transport leads to an increase of the global mean near-surface temperature and a decrease of its equator-to-pole gradient. For larger transports, the gradient is reduced further but the global mean remains approximately constant. This is linked to a cooling and a reversal of the temperature gradient in the tropics. A larger oceanic heat transport leads to a reduction of all reservoirs and conversions of the Lorenz energy cycle but of different relative magnitude for the individual components. The available potential energy of the zonal mean flow and its conversion to eddy available potential energy are affected most. Both the Hadley and Ferrel cell show a decline for increasing oceanic heat transport, with the Hadley cell being more sensitive. Both cells exhibit a poleward shift of their maxima, and the Hadley cell broadens for larger oceanic transports. The partitioning, by means of the Kuo-Eliassen equation, reveals that zonal mean diabatic heating and friction are the most important sources for changes of the Hadley cell, while the behaviour of the Ferrell cell is mostly controlled by friction. Using a recent theoretical approach, we study how the impact of global warming of the thermodynamics of the climate system by performing experiments with a simplified yet Earth-like climate model. In addition to the globally averaged surface temperature, the intensity of the Lorenz energy cycle, the Carnot efficiency, the material entropy production and the degree of irreversibility of the system are linear with the logarithm of the CO2 concentration. The dominant pattern of multidecadal variability of SST depicts a monopolar structure in the North Atlantic during the instrumental period with cold (warm) phases during 1900-1925 and 1970-1990 (1870-1890 and 1940-1960). Two atmospheric general circulation models of different complexity forced with global SST over the last century show SLP anomaly patterns from the warm and cold phases of the North Atlantic similar to the corresponding observed patterns. The analysis of a sediment core from Cariaco Basin, a coral record from the northern Red Sea, and a long-term sea level pressure (SLP) reconstruction reveals that the multidecadal mode of the atmospheric circulation characterizes climate variability also in the pre-industrial era. The analyses of SLP reconstruction and proxy data depict a persistent atmospheric mode at least over the last 300 years, where SLP shows a dipolar structure in response to monopolar North Atlantic SST, in a similar way as the models' responses do. The combined analysis of observational and proxy data with model experiments provides an understanding of multidecadal climate modes during the late Holocene. We discuss how atmospheric eddies affect transport and mixing of tracers at midlatitudes. To this purpose, we study baroclinic life cycles in a simple dynamical model of the atmosphere. We consider the trapping properties of the developing eddies and the characteristics of meridional transport, and we identify regions of increased mixing. Although the flow is in principle three-dimensional, we illustrate how some of the concepts developed in the study of two-dimensional chaotic advection provide useful information on tracer dynamics in more complicated flows. © 2000 American Institute of Physics. An investigation of the distribution of finite time trajectory divergence is performed on an atmospheric global circulation model. The distribution of the largest local Lyapunov exponent shows a significant probability for negative values over time spans up to 10 days. This effect is present for resolutions up to wave numbers l = 42 (≈250 km). The probability for a negative local largest Lyapunov exponent decreases over time, similarly to the predictions of the fluctuation theorem for entropy production.
