Spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) plays a central role in understanding a large variety of phenomena associated with phase transitions, such as superfluid and superconductivity. So far, the transition from a symmetric vacuum to a macroscopically ordered phase has been substantially explored. The process bridging these two distinct phases is critical to understanding how a classical world emerges from a quantum phase transition, but so far remains unexplored in experiment. We here report an experimental demonstration of such a process with a quantum Rabi model engineered with a superconducting circuit. We move the system from the normal phase to the superradiant phase featuring two symmetry-breaking field components, one of which is observed to emerge as the classical reality. Following the recent report by Dasenbrock-Gammon et al. (2023) of near-ambient superconductivity in nitrogen-doped lutetium trihydride (LuH3-{\delta}N{\epsilon}), significant debate has emerged surrounding the composition and interpretation of the observed sharp resistance drop. Here, we meticulously revisit these claims through comprehensive characterization and investigations. We definitively identify the reported material as lutetium dihydride (LuH2), resolving the ambiguity surrounding its composition. Under similar conditions (270-295 K and 1-2 GPa), we replicate the reported sharp decrease in electrical resistance with a 30% success rate, aligning with Dasenbrock-Gammon et al.'s observations. However, our extensive investigations reveal this phenomenon to be a novel, pressure-induced metal-to-metal transition intrinsic to LuH2, distinct from superconductivity. Intriguingly, nitrogen doping exerts minimal impact on this transition. Our work not only elucidates the fundamental properties of LuH2 and LuH3 but also critically challenges the notion of superconductivity in these lutetium hydride systems. These findings pave the way for future research on lutetium hydride systems while emphasizing the crucial importance of rigorous verification in claims of ambient temperature superconductivity.

This paper analyzes the possibility of bouncing and non-bouncing universes in the framework of four-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (4D-EGB) gravity, corresponding respectively to negative and positive coupling constants $\lambda$ of the Gauss-Bonnet term. We also use the Horndeski-type scalar-tensor theory to assess the role of a scalar charge $C$ as a geometrical contribution to the radiation in the Universe. We modify the expansion history of the universe to allow for modifications induced by the 4D-EGB gravity. Using Planck measurements of the cosmic microwave background anisotropies as well as various datasets of baryonic acoustic oscillations, we set the upper bounds $\lambda \le 10^{-16} \text{(km/s/Mpc)}^{-2} $ and $\lambda \le 10^{-30} \text{(km/s/Mpc)}^{-2} $ for the non-bouncing and bouncing scenarios. The upper limit in the latter case is mainly driven by the requirement to conservatively respect the thermal history at energy scales of the standard model of particle physics. We also find that the contribution of the geometrical radiation-like term of the model cannot exceed 10\% of the current radiation in the Universe. The possibility of an early inflationary phase produced by a single scalar field is also studied and found to be feasible in both bouncing and non-bouncing scenarios. This study shows the feasibility of a bouncing universe, even with normal matter sector, in the 4D-EGB gravity. We investigate various cosmological aspects of a 4-Dimensional Gauss-Bonnet Lagrangian, which is integrated into the Einstein Lagrangian with an arbitrary sign, using the Friedman-Lema\^itre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metric. We consider a general potential term, $V(a)$, that depends on the scale factor $a$, and we analyze several scenarios by investigating the critical points of the dynamical equations and stability conditions to understand how the universe's behavior is affected by the Gauss-Bonnet term. Our research suggests that choosing the negative sign, this integration allows for the spontaneous breaking of time reflection symmetry. This can lead to the generation of a bounce universe even with a normal matter sector, marking a significant departure from traditional theories. The Lifshitz-Kosevich (LK) theory is the pillar of magnetic quantum oscillations, which have been extensively applied to characterize a wide range of metallic states. In this study, we focus on the Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) effect observed in SmSb, a rare-earth monopnictide. We observed a significant departure from the expected LK theory near $T_N=2.4$~K: both a peak-like anomaly and an enhancement in the temperature dependence of quantum oscillation amplitude are seen in SmSb. Moreover, we discovered a remarkable sensitivity of the SdH amplitudes to sample purity. By adjusting the sample purity, we were able to tune the temperature dependence of the $\alpha$ band's SdH amplitudes from a peak-like anomalous behavior to an enhancement. Therefore, SdH oscillations from the $\alpha$ band connect the two well-known non-LK behaviours, controllable through varying the sample purity, paving the way for developing further understanding of the mechanism leading to the anomalous quantum oscillations., Comment: 4 figures

Critical phenomena of quantum systems are useful for enhancement of quantum sensing. However, experimental realizations of criticality enhancement have been confined to very few systems, owing to the stringent requirements, including the thermodynamical or scaling limit, and fine control of interacting quantum susystems or particles. We here propose a simple critical quantum sensing scheme that requires neither of these conditions. The critical system is realized with a single parametrically-driven bosonic mode involving many non-interacting bosons. We calculate the quantum Fisher information, and perform a simulation, which confirms the criticality-enabled enhancement. We further detail the response of one of the quadratures to the variation of the control parameter. The numerical results reveal that its inverted variance exhibits a diverging behavior at the critical point. Based on the presently available control techniques of parametric driving, we expect our scheme can be realized in different systems, e.g., ion traps and superconducting circuits., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We study the quantization of the 6d Seiberg-Witten curve for D-type minimal conformal matter theories compactified on a two-torus. The quantized 6d curve turns out to be a difference equation established via introducing codimension two and four surface defects. We show that, in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit, the 6d partition function with insertions of codimension two and four defects serve as the eigenfunction and eigenvalues of the difference equation, respectively. We further identify the quantum curve of D-type minimal conformal matters with an elliptic Garnier system recently studied in the integrability community. At last, as a concrete consequence of our elliptic quantum curve, we study its RG flows to obtain various quantum curves of 5d ${\rm Sp}(N)+N_f \mathsf{F},N_f\leq 2N+5$ theories., Comment: 36+6 pages, minor updates, added refs

We study the emission spectra of dissipative Rabi and Jaynes-Cummings models in the non-Markovian and ultrastrong coupling regimes. We have derived a polaron-transformed Nakajima-Zwanzig master equation (PTNZE) to calculate the emission spectra, which eliminates the well known limitations of the Markovian approximation and the standard second-order perturbation. Using the time-dependent variational approach as benchmark, the PTNZE is found to yield accurate emission spectra in certain ultrastrong coupling regimes where the standard second-order Nakajima-Zwanzig master equation breaks down. It is shown that the emission spectra of the dissipative Rabi and Jaynes-Cummings models are in general asymmetric under various initial conditions. Direct comparisons of spectra for the two models illustrate the essential role of the qubit-cavity counter-rotating term and the spectra features under different qubit-cavity coupling strengths and system initial conditions., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures

The Super $\tau$-Charm facility (STCF) is an electron-positron collider proposed by the Chinese particle physics community. It is designed to operate in a center-of-mass energy range from 2 to 7 GeV with a peak luminosity of $0.5\times 10^{35}{\rm cm}^{-2}{\rm s}^{-1}$ or higher. The STCF will produce a data sample about a factor of 100 larger than that by the present $\tau$-Charm factory -- the BEPCII, providing a unique platform for exploring the asymmetry of matter-antimatter (charge-parity violation), in-depth studies of the internal structure of hadrons and the nature of non-perturbative strong interactions, as well as searching for exotic hadrons and physics beyond the Standard Model. The STCF project in China is under development with an extensive R\&D program. This document presents the physics opportunities at the STCF, describes conceptual designs of the STCF detector system, and discusses future plans for detector R\&D and physics case studies.

Clusters or communities can provide a coarse-grained description of complex systems at multiple scales, but their detection remains challenging in practice. Community detection methods often define communities as dense subgraphs, or subgraphs with few connections in-between, via concepts such as the cut, conductance, or modularity. Here we consider another perspective built on the notion of local dominance, where low-degree nodes are assigned to the basin of influence of high-degree nodes, and design an efficient algorithm based on local information. Local dominance gives rises to community centers, and uncovers local hierarchies in the network. Community centers have a larger degree than their neighbors and are sufficiently distant from other centers. The strength of our framework is demonstrated on synthesized and empirical networks with ground-truth community labels. The notion of local dominance and the associated asymmetric relations between nodes are not restricted to community detection, and can be utilised in clustering problems, as we illustrate on networks derived from vector data.

The balanced hypercube $BH_{n}$, a variant of the hypercube, is a novel interconnection network for massive parallel systems. It is known that the balanced hypercube remains Hamiltonian after deleting at most $4n-5$ faulty edges if each vertex is incident with at least two edges in the resulting graph for all $n\geq2$. In this paper, we show that there exists a fault-free Hamiltonian cycle in $BH_{n}$ for $n\ge 2$ with $\left | F \right |\le 5n-7$ if the degree of every vertex in $BH_{n}-F$ is at least two and there exists no $f_{4}$-cycles in $BH_{n}-F$, which improves some known results.

In landscape-scale experiments at the edge of the Gobi desert, we show that various dune types develop simultaneously under natural wind conditions. Using 4 years of high-resolution topographic data, we demonstrate that, depending on sand availability, the same wind regime can lead to two different dune orientations, which reflect two independent dune growth mechanisms. As periodic oblique dunes emerge from a sand bed and develop to 2 meters in height, we analyze defect dynamics that drive the non-linear phase of pattern coarsening. Starting from conical sand heaps deposited on gravels, we observe the transition from dome to barchan and asymmetric barchan shapes. We identify a minimum size for arm elongation and evaluate the contribution of wind reversals to its longitudinal alignment. These experimental field observations support existing theoretical models of dune dynamics boosting confidence in their applicability for quantitative predictions of dune evolution under various wind regimes and bed conditions.

We perform a global analysis of the $b\to c\tau\nu$ data using the recent lattice results on the $B_c\to J/\psi$ vector and axial-vector form factors. To explore the effects from the tensor operator of new physics beyond the standard model, we determine the tensor form factors by using the non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) relations between tensor and (axial-)vector form factors. Based on the lattice+NRQCD form factors, we fit the Wilson coefficients and the new physics couplings in $R_2$, $S_1$ and $U_1$ leptoquark models by including the recently measured $R(\Lambda_c)$ and imposing the relaxed constraint $\mathcal B(B_c\to J/\psi)<30\%$ in light of the recent studies on LEP1 data and $B_c$ lifetime. We give predictions for the experimental observables including $R(J/\psi)$, $P_\tau(J/\psi)$, $F_L(J/\psi)$ and $\mathcal A_{FB}(J/\psi)$ as well as their $q^2$ distribution in new physics scenarios/models. Our results suggest that the longitudinal $\tau$ polarization fraction $P_\tau(J/\psi)$ and the forward-backward asymmetry $\mathcal A_{FB}(J/\psi)$ are useful for testing the $R_2$ leptoquark model., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures and 6 tables

Let $\Delta =\left(\begin{smallmatrix} A & {_AN_B}\\ {_BM_A} & B \\\end{smallmatrix}\right)$ be a Morita ring with $M\otimes_{A}N=0=N\otimes_{B}M$.We first study how to construct (complete) duality pairs of $\Delta$-modules using (complete) duality pairs of $A$-modules and $B$-modules, generalizing the result of Mao (Comm. Algebra, 2020, 12: 5296--5310) about the duality pairs over a triangular matrix ring. Moreover, we construct Gorenstein projective modules relative to complete duality pairs of $\Delta$-modules.
