Abstract

The increase in digital teaching and learning methodologies creates the opportunity for new educational approaches, both in terms of pedagogical practice and in the availability of new technological tools. The flipped classroom as an active teaching methodology is one example of blended learning (b-learning), which aims to harmonize and enhance the fusion of face-to-face teaching with online teaching, allowing students to get better use of both face-to-face contact with classmates and professors and digital teaching resources. However, active teaching methodologies allow us to merge educational techniques from different methodological approaches, for example, gamification and team-based learning (TBL), among others. This study aims to demonstrate how to implement a flipped classroom with the possibility of integrating gamification and TBL, indicating possibilities and challenges to overcome, through the comparative study and research carried out with students in higher education. The study was conducted with a group of 88 students from the engineering and technology fields, which showed that students have a very positive perception of active teaching methodologies and their teaching and learning techniques, especially those involving digital. Data collection was performed by a survey submitted to quantitative analysis using the Software SPSS version 28.

Abstract

Brain Complexity (BC) have successfully been applied to study the brain electroencephalographic signal (EEG) in health and disease. In this study, we employed recurrence entropy to quantify BC associated with the neurophysiology of movement by comparing BC in both resting state and cycling movement. We measured EEG in 24 healthy adults and placed the electrodes on occipital, parietal, temporal and frontal sites on both the right and left sides of the brain. We computed the recurrence entropy from EEG measurements during cycling and resting states. Entropy is higher in the resting state than in the cycling state for all brain regions analysed. This reduction in complexity is a result of the repetitive movements that occur during cycling. These movements lead to continuous sensorial feedback, resulting in reduced entropy and sensorimotor processing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Cement-based construction materials, commonly known as "cement concrete", result from the hydration reaction of cement, which releases heat. Numerous studies have examined the heat of cement hydration and other thermal properties of these materials. However, a significant gap in the literature is the assessment of the impact of the hydration temperature on the material's strength, particularly compressive strength. This work presents an experimental methodology that consistently estimates the temperature evolution of a mixture used to manufacture concrete or mortar during the first hours of Portland cement hydration. The methodology aims to ensure results that correspond to an infinite medium (adiabatic conditions), where there are no heat losses to the surroundings. Results obtained under adiabatic conditions (simulating an infinite medium) indicate that a ready-made mortar (Portland cement: sand: water; 1:2.5:0.5) can reach temperatures of approximately 100 °C after 48 h of hydration. Abstract

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the carbon fiber obtained from textile PAN fiber, in its different forms, as a potential scaffolds synthetic bone. Thirty‐four adult rats were used (Rattus norvegicus, albinus variation), two critical sized bone defects were made that were 5 mm in diameter. Twenty‐four animals were randomly divided into four groups: control (C)—bone defect + blood clot, non‐activated carbon fiber felt (NACFF)—bone defect + NACFF, activated carbon fiber felt (ACFF)—bone defect + ACFF, and silver activated carbon fiber felt (Ag‐ACFF)—bone defect + Ag‐ACFF, and was observed by 15 and 60 days for histomorphometric, three‐dimensional computerized microtomography (microCT) and mineral apposition analysis. On histomorphometric and microCT analyses, NACFF were associated with higher proportion of neoformed bone and maintenance of bone structure. On fluorochrome bone label, there was no differences between the groups. NACFF has shown to be a promising synthetic material as a scaffold for bone regeneration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
