Abstract

This appendix volume supplements "Evaluating the Federal Innovative Assessment Demonstration Authority: Early Implementation and Progress of State Efforts to Develop New Statewide Academic Assessments. Evaluation Report. NCEE 2023-004" analyzing the early progress of the first five assessment systems participating in the Innovative Assessment Demonstration Authority (IADA) created by the 2015 reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. These systems include: (1) the New Hampshire Performance Assessment of Competency Education (NH PACE); (2) the Louisiana Educational Assessment Program 2025 Humanities (LEAP 2025 Humanities); (3) the North Carolina Personalized Assessment Tool (NC PAT); (4) the Georgia MAP Assessment Partnership (GMAP) through-year assessment and (5) the Georgia Navvy assessment system. The volume documents the features of the IADA program and the five IADA systems, the study team's research activities, and includes more detailed findings than were summarized in the report. Abstract

Education officials have long hoped that the statewide academic assessments most students take each year could be used not only for accountability but also to guide instruction. Congress established the Innovative Assessment Demonstration Authority (IADA) program in 2015 to help address this goal, offering up to seven states temporary flexibility from federal testing requirements so that they may more easily make progress toward replacing their current assessments with more innovative ones. The key incentive to participate in IADA is that students trying out the innovative assessment are not required to also take the state's current assessment. However, states approved for IADA must still show that their innovative assessments meet most requirements for federal accountability, and they are expected to implement the new assessments statewide within 5 years. This report describes the progress of the first five assessment systems approved under IADA in order to help policymakers consider expanding the program to more states. The report is primarily based on an analysis of states' IADA applications and performance reports to the U.S. Department of Education through the 2020-2021 school year and is part of a broader evaluation of IADA required by Congress. Abstract

Abstract Background 90% of glioblastomas (GBM) relapse within two years of diagnosis. In contrast to the initial setting, there is no standard management for recurrent disease and options include hypofractionated stereotactic re-irradiation (re-mHSRT). The aims of this study were to investigate re-mHSRT practice in Swiss neuro-oncology centres. Methods A survey of 18 questions regarding re-irradiation for GBM was created and distributed electronically (SurveyMonkey, USA) to 11 radiation oncologists in Switzerland specialising in brain tumours. We evaluated the clinical outcomes of a multicentre series of patients treated with an established re-mHSRT schedule to benchmark these against the literature and investigated the radiological patterns of relapse after re-mHSRT. Results 8 of 11 (73%) radiation oncologists responded to the survey and re-irradiation practice was heterogeneous. The 10 × 3.5 Gy schedule (RTOG 1205, BRIOChe trials) was used by 5/8 respondents and 47/50 patients with recurrent GBM treated with re-mHSRT with this schedule in daily practice were included in the analysis. The median time to re-mHSRT following completion of adjuvant RT was 23.3 (7-224) months. The median PTV at re-mHSRT was 22.0 cm3 (0.9–190). Combined CTV + PTV margins ranged from 0 to 10 mm and median prescription isodose was 80% (67–100). 14/47 (30%) patients received temozolomide and four (8.5%) continued bevacizumab concomitantly. On multivariable analysis, concomitant systemic therapy predicted for progression-free survival (PFS), HR 2.87 (95% CI 1-03-7.96), p = 0.042. Median PFS following re-mHSRT was 6.6 (0.2–92.5) months and 26/47 patients (55%) received subsequent systemic therapy. The median overall survival (OS) following recurrence was 11.8 months (1.5–92.5), similar to the 10.8 months in the literature with the same schedule. The six-month OS rate was 37/47 (79%), which compares well with the 73% reported in a meta-analysis of 50 publications employing various schedules. In a subgroup analysis of 36/47 (79%) patients with MR follow-up after re-mHSRT, 8/36 (22%) had no radiological evidence of tumour progression at a median follow-up of 9.4 months. 21/28 (75%) radiological relapses were in-field, two were marginal and five were out of field. Conclusions Re-mHSRT with 10 × 3.5 Gy can achieve local control in selected patients with recurrent GBM.

Abstract

Abstract Background Tauopathies are a group of age-related neurodegenerative diseases characterized by the accumulation of pathologically hyperphosphorylated tau protein in the brain, leading to prion-like aggregation and propagation. They include Alzheimer’s disease (AD), progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), corticobasal degeneration (CBD), and Pick’s disease (PiD). Currently, reliable diagnostic biomarkers that directly reflect the capability of propagation and spreading of misfolded tau aggregates in peripheral tissues and body fluids are lacking. Methods We utilized the seed-amplification assay (SAA) employing ultrasensitive real-time quaking-induced conversion (RT-QuIC) to assess the prion-like seeding activity of pathological tau in the skin of cadavers with neuropathologically confirmed tauopathies, including AD, PSP, CBD, and PiD, compared to normal controls. Results We found that the skin tau-SAA demonstrated a significantly higher sensitivity (75–80%) and specificity (95–100%) for detecting tauopathy, depending on the tau substrates used. Moreover, the increased tau-seeding activity was also observed in biopsy skin samples from living AD and PSP patients examined. Analysis of the end products of skin-tau SAA confirmed that the increased seeding activity was accompanied by the formation of tau aggregates with different physicochemical properties related to two different tau substrates used. Conclusions Overall, our study provides proof-of-concept that the skin tau-SAA can differentiate tauopathies from normal controls, suggesting that the seeding activity of misfolded tau in the skin could serve as a diagnostic biomarker for tauopathies.

8. Towards Attentive, Playful Arts-Based Methodology with Children

Abstract

This paper shares methodological insights from our research which sought to centre children in the production of knowledge during the 2020 global pandemic to consider how this can inform research with children beyond the crisis. Drawing on our longitudinal participatory arts-based research with 30 children aged 9-12 during 2020-22, the paper illustrates our response to the shifting research landscape which included navigating social restrictions to develop child-centred ways of working with socially distanced arts-based methods and technologies. The paper sets out key principles focused on foregrounding children's ways of knowing and attentive seeing which underpinned our reframing of the research encounter from one in which adults are intent on extracting children's ready-made thoughts to a space in which knowledge generation is recognised as a process of co-construction and engagement with children. Central to this process is our commitment to feminist care ethics and the application of principles from early childhood research and pedagogy which prioritise attentiveness to younger children's rhythms and pace. Our aim, in setting out an approach which makes a space for playfulness with older children, is to elaborate the potential of slower, attentive methods and to offer a methodological framework to address to wider questions about what arts-based methods do.

9. Untangling the environmental drivers of gross primary productivity in African rangelands

Abstract

Abstract Precipitation variability is forecast to increase under climate change but its impacts on vegetation productivity are complex. Here, we use generalised additive models and remote sensing-derived datasets to quantify the effect of precipitation amount, distribution, and intensity on the gross primary productivity of dry rangelands across sub-Saharan Africa from 2000 to 2019 and differentiate these effects from other variables. We find that total precipitation is the primary driver of productivity, but that more variable rainfall has a small negative effect across vegetation types and rainfall regimes. Temperature and soil nitrogen also have strong effects, especially in drier rangelands. Shrublands and grasslands are more sensitive to environmental variability than savannas. Our findings support a model in which the main constraints on productivity are maintenance of soil moisture and minimisation of plant water stress. This highlights the risks of climate warming and increasing variability for productivity in water-limited grass and shrublands but suggests savannas may have greater resilience in Africa.

Abstract

This study presents the design and simulation of an RF MEMS variable capacitor with a high tuning ratio and high linearity factor of capacitance–voltage response. An electrostatic torsion actuator with planar and non-planar structures is presented to obtain the high tuning ratio by avoiding the occurrence of pull-in point. In the proposed design, the capacitor plate is connected to the electrostatic actuators by using the s-shaped beam. The proposed design shows a 138% tuning ratio with the planar structure of the actuator and 167% tuning ratio by implementing the non-planar structure. A linearity factor of 99% is attained by adjusting the rates at which the capacitor plate rises as the actuation voltage increases and the rate at which the capacitance decreases as the plate rises. Parametric optimization of the design is performed by utilizing the finite element method (FEM) analysis and high-frequency structural simulator (HFSS) analysis to obtain an optimized high-tuning ratio RF MEMS varactor at low actuation voltage. S-parameters of the design are presented on HFSS, with a 50 ohm coplanar waveguide (CPW) serving as the transmission line. The proposed RF MEMS varactor can be utilized in tunable RF devices.

Abstract

Abstract Background Immunoglobulin (Ig) glycosylation modulates the immune response and plays a critical role in ageing and diseases. Studies have mainly focused on IgG glycosylation, and little is known about the genetics and epidemiology of IgA glycosylation. Methods We generated, using a novel liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry method, the first large-scale IgA glycomics dataset in serum from 2423 twins, encompassing 71 N- and O-glycan species. Results We showed that, despite the lack of a direct genetic template, glycosylation is highly heritable, and that glycopeptide structures are sex-specific, and undergo substantial changes with ageing. We observe extensive correlations between the IgA and IgG glycomes, and, exploiting the twin design, show that they are predominantly influenced by shared genetic factors. A genome-wide association study identified eight loci associated with both the IgA and IgG glycomes (ST6GAL1, ELL2, B4GALT1, ABCF2, TMEM121, SLC38A10, SMARCB1, and MGAT3) and two novel loci specifically modulating IgA O-glycosylation (C1GALT1 and ST3GAL1). Validation of our findings in an independent cohort of 320 individuals from Qatar showed that the underlying genetic architecture is conserved across ancestries. Conclusions Our study delineates the genetic landscape of IgA glycosylation and provides novel potential functional links with the aetiology of complex immune diseases, including genetic factors involved in IgA nephropathy risk.

Abstract

Cattle liveweight (LW) monitoring is essential for the effective management of animal productivity and welfare, particularly in decision-making on farms. Traditional static weigh (SW) systems require animals to be moved to fixed scales, posing challenges in extensive beef systems due to labour demands, costs, stress, and weight loss during muster. This study evaluated the relationship between LW measured by a SW system and a mobile in-field weighing system, Optiweigh (OW), in 65 weaners (Angus, Shorthorn, and Angus-Shorthorn cross) grazing on forage oats at a commercial beef property in north-west NSW, Australia. Over 22 weeks, cattle were weighed fortnightly using SW scales in the cattle yards while OW continuously monitored LW in the paddock. Lin's concordance correlation coefficient showed a strong association between OW and SW liveweight (CCC = 0.97; P < 0.001), with no influence from breed or sex. However, OW slightly over-predicted LW for lighter cattle (≤ 382 kg) and under-predicted for heavier cattle (> 382 kg), prompting the development of a correction. Further research is needed to understand the reasons for these discrepancies, potentially related to diet. Additionally, cattle attendance at OW was affected by size, season, and individual variation (P < 0.001). Overall, the OW system simply and accurately monitored the temporal changes in cattle LW through voluntary animal attendance in remote systems.

Abstract

Abstract Data on the use of golimumab (GLM) during pregnancy are limited. This study evaluated pregnancy outcomes in women treated with GLM during pregnancy. Cumulative data on GLM‐exposed pregnancies from the Company's global safety database (GSD) are summarized. Cases were medically confirmed maternal exposures to GLM during pregnancy or within 3 months prior to conception with a reported pregnancy outcome. Pregnancy outcomes (e.g., live births) and congenital anomalies in prospectively reported cases (i.e., pregnancy outcome not known when first reported to the company) are presented in a descriptive manner. As of May 31, 2022, 261 prospectively reported pregnancies exposed to GLM were reported in the GSD: 214 (82.0%) live births (including six sets of twins), 31 (11.9%) spontaneous abortions (including one set of twins), 13 (5.0%) induced/elective abortions, 2 (0.8%) reported intrauterine death/still birth, and 1 (0.4%) fetal adverse event in an ongoing pregnancy. The majority of pregnancies had exposure to GLM at least in the first trimester of pregnancy. In total, seven congenital anomalies (7/261; 2.7%) were reported. Of these seven congenital anomalies, five were considered major according to EUROCAT classification version 1.4. Among the five prospectively reported congenital anomalies noted in live births (5/214; 2.3%), four were classified as major (4/214; 1.8%). The rates of adverse pregnancy outcomes and major congenital anomalies in prospectively reported pregnancy cases with exposure to GLM in the Company's GSD were consistent with published background rates for the general population.

Abstract

Purpose: Preoperative radiosurgery (SRS) of brain metastases (BM) aims to achieve cavity local control with a reduction in leptomeningeal relapse (LMD) and without additional radionecrosis compared to postoperative SRS. We present the final results of a prospective feasibility trial of linac-based stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) prior to neurosurgical resection of a brain metastasis (PREOP-1). Methods: Eligibility criteria included a BM up to 4 cm in diameter for elective resection. The primary endpoint was the feasibility of delivering linac-based preoperative SRS in all patients prior to anticipated gross tumour resection. Secondary endpoints included rates of LMD, local control and overall survival. Exploratory endpoints were the level of expression of immunological and proliferative markers. Results: Thirteen patients of median age 65 years (range 41–77) were recruited. Twelve patients (92 %) received preoperative radiosurgery and metastasectomy and one patient went directly to surgery and received postoperative SRS, thus the primary endpoint was not met. The median time between referral and preoperative SRS was 6.5 working days (1–10) and from SRS to neurosurgery was 1 day (0–5). The median prescribed dose was 16 Gy (14–19) to a median planning target volume of 12.7 cm3 (5.9–26.1). Five patients completed 12-month follow-up after preoperative SRS without local recurrence or leptomeningeal disease. The patient who received postoperative FSRT developed LMD after six months. There was one transient toxicity (grade 2 alopecia) and nine patients have died from extracranial causes. Patients reported significant improvement in motor weakness at 6 months (P = 0.04). No pattern in changes of marker expression was observed. Conclusion: In patients with large brain metastasis without raised intracranial pressure, linac-based preoperative SRS was feasible in 12/13 patients and safe in 12/12 patients without any surgical delay or intracranial complications.

Abstract

Introduction In liver cirrhosis, acute variceal bleeding (AVB) is associated with a 1-year mortality rate of up to 40%. Data on early or pre-emptive transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic stent–shunt (TIPSS) in AVB is inconclusive and may not reflect current management strategies. Randomised controlled trial of EArly transjugular intrahepatiC porTosystemic stent–shunt in AVB (REACT-AVB) aims to investigate the clinical and cost-effectiveness of early TIPSS in patients with cirrhosis and AVB after initial bleeding control.Methods and analysis REACT-AVB is a multicentre, randomised controlled, open-label, superiority, two-arm, parallel-group trial with an internal pilot. The two interventions allocated randomly 1:1 are early TIPSS within 4 days of diagnostic endoscopy or secondary prophylaxis with endoscopic therapy in combination with non-selective beta blockers. Patients aged ≥18 years with cirrhosis and Child-Pugh Score 7–13 presenting with AVB with endoscopic haemostasis are eligible for inclusion. The primary outcome is transplant-free survival at 1 year post randomisation. Secondary endpoints include transplant-free survival at 6 weeks, rebleeding, serious adverse events, other complications of cirrhosis, Child-Pugh and Model For End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) scores at 6 and 12 months, health-related quality of life, use of healthcare resources, cost-effectiveness and use of cross-over therapies. The sample size is 294 patients over a 4-year recruitment period, across 30 hospitals in the UK.Ethics and dissemination Research ethics committee of National Health Service has approved REACT-AVB (reference number: 23/WM/0085). The results will be submitted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Abstract

Objective The healthcare burden of alcohol-related liver disease (ARLD) is increasing. ARLD and alcohol use disorder (AUD) is best managed by reduction or cessation of alcohol use, but effective treatments are lacking. We tested whether people with ARLD and AUD admitted to hospital could be recruited to and retained in a trial of Functional Imagery Training (FIT), a psychological therapy that uses mental imagery to reduce alcohol craving. We conducted a multicentre randomised pilot trial of treatment as usual (TAU) versus FIT+TAU in people admitted to hospital with ARLD and AUD.Design Participants were randomised to TAU (a single session of brief intervention) or FIT+TAU (TAU with one hospital-based FIT session then eight telephone sessions over 6 months). Pilot outcomes included recruitment rate and retention at day 180. Secondary outcomes included fidelity of FIT delivery, alcohol use, and severity of alcohol dependence.Results Fifty-four participants (mean age 49; 63% male) were recruited and randomised, 28 to TAU and 26 to FIT+TAU. The retention rate at day 180 was 43%. FIT was delivered adequately by most alcohol nurses. 50% of intervention participants completed FIT sessions 1 and 2. There were no differences in alcohol use or severity of alcohol dependence between treatment groups at day 180.Conclusion Participants with ARLD and AUD could be recruited to a trial of FIT versus FIT+TAU. However, retention at day 180 was suboptimal. Before conducting a definitive trial of FIT in this patient group, modifications in the intervention and recruitment/retention strategy must be tested.Trial registration number ISRCTN41353774.

Abstract

Abstract In the past two decades, the central portion of Campi Flegrei caldera has experienced ground uplift up to 15 mm/month, with an increase of rate, magnitude and extent of the seismicity. In this work, we perform multi‐scale precise earthquake relocation of the 2014–2024 seismicity, mapping in detail activated fault zones. We relate the geometry, extent, and depth of these zones with up‐to‐date structural reconstructions of the caldera. The current seismicity is mainly driven by ground‐uplift‐induced stress concentration on pre‐existing, weaker fault zones, some of which identified for the first time. These structures are not only related to the inner caldera and dome resurgence but also to volcano‐tectonic events of the last 10 ka. The extent of imaged fault segments suggests they can accommodate ruptures up to a moment magnitude 5.1, significantly increasing seismic hazard in the area.

Abstract

Automated seismic arrival picking on large and real-time seismological waveform datasets is fundamental for monitoring and research. Recent, high-performance arrival pickers apply deep-neural-networks to nearly raw seismogram inputs. However, there is a long history of rule-based, automated arrival detection and picking methods that efficiently exploit variations in amplitude, frequency and polarization of seismograms. Here we use this seismological domain-knowledge to transform raw seismograms as input to a deep-learning picker. We preprocess 3-component seismograms into 3-component characteristic functions of a multi-band picker, plus modulus and inclination. We use these five time-series as input instead of raw seismograms to extend the deep-neural-network picker PhaseNet. We compare the original, data-driven PhaseNet and our domain-knowledge PhaseNet (DKPN) after identical training on datasets of different sizes and application to in- and cross-domain test datasets. We find DKPN and PhaseNet show near identical picking performance for in-domain picking, while DKPN outperforms PhaseNet for some cases of cross-domain picking, particularly with smaller training datasets; additionally, DKPN trains faster than PhaseNet. These results show that while the neural-network architecture underlying PhaseNet is remarkably robust with respect to transformations of the input data (e.g. DKPN preprocessing), use of domain-knowledge input can improve picker performance.

Abstract

Introduction Epilepsy is a common neurological disorder characterised by recurrent seizures. Almost half of patients who have an unprovoked first seizure (UFS) have additional seizures and develop epilepsy. No current predictive models exist to determine who has a higher risk of recurrence to guide treatment. Emerging evidence suggests alterations in cognition, mood and brain connectivity exist in the population with UFS. Baseline evaluations of these factors following a UFS will enable the development of the first multimodal biomarker-based predictive model of seizure recurrence in adults with UFS.Methods and analysis 200 patients and 75 matched healthy controls (aged 18–65) from the Kingston and Halifax First Seizure Clinics will undergo neuropsychological assessments, structural and functional MRI, and electroencephalography. Seizure recurrence will be assessed prospectively. Regular follow-ups will occur at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months to monitor recurrence. Comparisons will be made between patients with UFS and healthy control groups, as well as between patients with and without seizure recurrence at follow-up. A multimodal machine-learning model will be trained to predict seizure recurrence at 12 months.Ethics and dissemination This study was approved by the Health Sciences and Affiliated Teaching Hospitals Research Ethics Board at Queen’s University (DMED-2681-22) and the Nova Scotia Research Ethics Board (1028519). 29. Exploring the Cognitive Model of Social Anxiety in Autistic Young People--The Central Role of Bodily Symptoms

Abstract

We explored the role of negative performance beliefs and self-focused attention considered central to psychological models of social anxiety but not studied in autism. Firstly, we compared self- and observer ratings of performance on a social task for 71 young autistic people, 41 high and 30 low in social anxiety, finding a significant main effect of social anxiety but not rater. Subsequently, 76 autistic young people, 46 high and 30 low social anxiety completed measures of interoceptive sensibility and focus of attention following a social task. Only heightened interoceptive sensibility fully mediated the relationship between self-ratings of social performance and social anxiety. These findings suggest awareness of bodily sensations are critical to anxiety in social situations with implications for treatment.

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this work was to provide a flexible platform for FLASH research with protons by adapting a former clinical pencil beam scanning gantry to irradiations with ultrahigh dose rates. Methods: PSI Gantry 1 treated patients until December 2018. We optimized the beamline parameters to transport the 250 MeV beam extracted from the PSI COMET accelerator to the treatment room, maximizing the transmission of beam intensity to the sample. We characterized a dose monitor on the gantry to ensure good control of the dose, delivered in spot-scanning mode. We characterized the beam for different dose rates and field sizes for transmission irradiations. We explored scanning possibilities in order to enable conformal irradiations or transmission irradiations of large targets (with transverse scanning). Results: We achieved a transmission of 86 % from the cyclotron to the treatment room. We reached a peak dose rate of 9000 Gy/s at 3 mm water equivalent depth, along the central axis of a single pencil beam. Field sizes of up to 5x5 mm$^{2}$ were achieved for single spot FLASH irradiations. Fast transverse scanning allowed to cover a field of 16x1.2 cm$^{2}$. With the use of a nozzle-mounted range shifter we are able to span depths in water ranging from 19.6 to 37.9 cm. Various dose levels were delivered with a precision within less than 1 %. Conclusions: We have realized a proton FLASH irradiation setup able to investigate continuously a wide dose rate spectrum, from 1 to 9000 Gy/s in a single spot irradiation as well as in the pencil beam scanning mode. Abstract

Protocols that enable prompt identification of sows in need of assistance during farrowing are important for optimal production outcomes. Change in the colour and appearance of the sclera of the eye can indicate increased stress. This warrants investigation into its use for the identification of sows in need of assistance at the time of parturition. To this end, a three-level ocular scoring system for the pig was devised and subsequently used in a preliminary investigation into the relationship between farrowing kinetics and visual changes in the sclera at farrowing. Data were collected and analysed from twenty randomly selected Large White × Landrace crossbred sows during farrowing. It was determined that sows with a severe ocular score were more likely to experience a prolonged farrowing duration (p = 0.013) and incur increased parturient straining of either total straining time (p = 0.011) or straining per piglet (p = 0.025). There was a significant association between ocular score and litter size (p = 0.043). Ocular score was not associated with sow parity (p = 0.728) and inter-piglet interval (p = 0.075). The proposed three-level scoring system successfully identified sows experiencing an abnormal parturition as defined by a prolonged farrowing duration and increased straining time. Findings from this study suggest the potential application of this simple ocular scoring tool for identifying sows experiencing an abnormal farrowing via in-person application or integration into remote monitoring systems in the future.

Abstract

Abstract With the capacity to produce and record data electronically, Scientific research and the data associated with it have grown at an unprecedented rate. However, despite a decent amount of data now existing in an electronic form, it is still common for scientific research to be recorded in an unstructured text format with inconsistent context (vocabularies) which vastly reduces the potential for direct intelligent analysis. Research has demonstrated that the use of semantic technologies such as ontologies to structure and enrich scientific data can greatly improve this potential. However, whilst there are many ontologies that can be used for this purpose, there is still a vast quantity of scientific terminology that does not have adequate semantic representation. A key area for expansion identified by the authors was the pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) domain due to its high usage across many areas of Pharma. As such we have produced a set of these terms and other bioassay related terms to be incorporated into the BioAssay Ontology (BAO), which was identified as the most relevant ontology for this work. A number of use cases developed by experts in the field were used to demonstrate how these new ontology terms can be used, and to set the scene for the continuation of this work with a look to expanding this work out into further relevant domains. The work done in this paper was part of Phase 1 of the SEED project (Semantically Enriching electronic laboratory notebook (eLN) Data).

50. Psychological distance intervention reminders reduce alcohol consumption frequency in daily life

Abstract

Abstract Modifying behaviors, such as alcohol consumption, is difficult. Creating psychological distance between unhealthy triggers and one’s present experience can encourage change. Using two multisite, randomized experiments, we examine whether theory-driven strategies to create psychological distance—mindfulness and perspective-taking—can change drinking behaviors among young adults without alcohol dependence via a 28-day smartphone intervention (Study 1, N = 108 participants, 5492 observations; Study 2, N = 218 participants, 9994 observations). Study 2 presents a close replication with a fully remote delivery during the COVID-19 pandemic. During weeks when they received twice-a-day intervention reminders, individuals in the distancing interventions reported drinking less frequently than on control weeks—directionally in Study 1, and significantly in Study 2. Intervention reminders reduced drinking frequency but did not impact amount. We find that smartphone-based mindfulness and perspective-taking interventions, aimed to create psychological distance, can change behavior. This approach requires repeated reminders, which can be delivered via smartphones.
