8. Overworked? An Observation of the Relationship between Student Employment and Academic Performance

Abstract

Current observations from the National Center for Education Statistics demonstrate the dramatic increase in college student employment over the past few decades. Not only are more students employed than in previous decades, students are working more hours. This could lead to declines in academic performance as hours worked increase, resulting in less time for studying. This article correlates the number of hours worked with each student's academic performance. Data used in the article are taken from student responses to the College Student Experience Questionnaire developed by the Indiana University at Bloomington. This analysis looks at differences regarding students employed in on-campus jobs relative to off-campus jobs. Various relationships are estimated, breaking down the sample by various cohorts including class, gender, and age. Estimated findings show that students should be discouraged from working over 20 hours in off-campus jobs in their first 2 years of college.

10. Adult Vaccination--A Commentary

Abstract

Traditionally, vaccines have been associated with childhood. Historically, many of the most-feared communicable diseases attacked infants and toddlers, and those who survived were generally protected from those diseases as adults. During the past century tremendous advances in vaccination spared millions the morbidity and mortality associated with such dreaded diseases as diphtheria, polio and measles. Today, only 300 children die each year from VPDs in the United States. This number reflects a greater than 99% reduction in mortality since the pre-vaccine era. Despite these successes in addressing vaccine preventable diseases for children, vaccination for U.S. adults has been severely neglected. In this article, the author suggests that in order to improve adult vaccination rates, health educators must work with health care providers to address barriers. Health educators should: (1) evaluate and research population segments with low awareness to target for intervention; (2) serve as health information resources to address lack of knowledge that leads to complacency; (3) identify reasons for misinformation and plan strategies to address misinformation; and (4) advocate for improved access to adult vaccination services. 15. Poster Presentations: Turning a Lab of the Week into a Culminating Experience

Abstract

An assignment incorporating posters into a second-year analytical chemistry lab is described. Students work in groups and are assigned one of the application-themed weekly laboratories as a topic. Course data acquired for these weekly laboratories are compiled into spreadsheets that the poster group then analyzes to present in an on-campus poster session. Visual design with the use of minimal text is emphasized, and statistical analysis and spreadsheet usage are incorporated. This assignment provides the majority of students in the course with their first poster experience. By making the students revisit a previous lab and reconsider the topic using course-wide data, a simple lab of the week becomes an in-depth project culminating in a poster presentation. Student satisfaction with this assignment has been high both in terms of group work experience and the resulting poster.

16. Determination of Log K[subscript ow] Values for Four Drugs

Abstract

Though many undergraduates are interested in medicine, relatively few experiments related to drug design and development are included in introductory chemistry laboratory courses. In this experiment, aqueous solutions of four different drugs (acetaminophen, caffeine, phenacetin, and sulfanilamide) are extracted using 1-octanol, a mimic of the amphiphilic lipids that constitute cell membranes. UV analysis of the aqueous solutions before and after extraction allows determination of each compound's log K[subscript ow] value (partition coefficient), a property that influences a drug's bioavailability. The concepts of equilibrium and hydrophobicity-hydrophilicity are emphasized, and students gain experience with micropipets in making dilutions. The lab has been implemented in a second-year undergraduate analytical chemistry course but may be suitable for organic, general, or medicinal chemistry depending on an institution's particular curriculum.

17. The Chemistry of Perfume: A Laboratory Course for Nonscience Majors

Abstract

"The Chemistry of Perfume" is a lab-only course for nonscience majors. Students learn fundamental concepts of chemistry through the context of fragrance, a pervasive aspect of daily life. The course consists of laboratories pertaining to five units: introduction, extraction, synthesis, characterization, and application. The introduction unit acquaints students with basic perfume terminology and the idea that chemical structure relates to scent. The extraction unit focuses on capturing and isolating fragrant essences from natural materials, whereas the synthetic unit considers mimicking such scents through chemical reactions. In the characterization unit, students analyze the components of perfume and fragrant materials. The course ends with the application unit in which students incorporate their fragrances into consumer products and toiletries. Curriculum structure, content, and student feedback are described. This perfume lab course results from an effort to increase interest in chemistry among nonscience students and encourage interdisciplinary learning. (Contains 2 tables and 6 figures.)

Abstract

The authors discuss the effectiveness of the Quality School model and active learning in an undergraduate classroom setting. They compare performance levels of students in two course sections of Principles of Macroeconomics and two sections of Managerial Communications. Students are given an opportunity to help shape the structure of the information covered based on their own interests and concerns. The results support predictions of improved student performance in classes where the Quality School model was implemented relative to those where it was not. (Contains 2 tables.)

Abstract

Over time, improvements in HIV/AIDS surveillance and service utilization data have increased their usefulness for planning programs, targeting resources, and otherwise informing HIV/AIDS policy. However, community planning groups, service providers, and health department staff often have difficulty in interpreting and applying the wide array of data now available. We describe the development of the Bridging Model, a technical assistance model for overcoming barriers to the use of data for program planning. Through the use of an iterative feedback loop in the model, HIV/AIDS data products constantly are evolving to better inform the decision-making tasks of their multiple users. Implementation of this model has led to improved data quality and data products and to a greater willingness and ability among stakeholders to use the data for planning purposes.

Abstract

We examine the relative contribution of processes controlling the interannual variability (IAV) of tropospheric ozone over four sub-regions of the southern hemispheric tropospheric ozone maximum (SHTOM) over a 20-year period. Our study is based on hindcast simulations from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Global Modeling Initiative chemistry transport model (NASA GMI-CTM) of tropospheric and stratospheric chemistry, driven by assimilated Modern Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA) meteorological fields. Our analysis shows that over SHTOM region, the IAV of the stratospheric contribution is the most important factor driving the IAV of upper tropospheric ozone (270 hectopascals), where ozone has a strong radiative effect. Over the South Atlantic region, the contribution from surface emissions to the IAV of ozone exceeds that from stratospheric input at and below 430 hectopascals. Over the South Indian Ocean, the IAV of stratospheric ozone makes the largest contribution to the IAV of ozone with little or no influence from surface emissions at 270 and 430 hectopascals in austral winter. Over the tropical South Atlantic region, the contribution from IAV of stratospheric input dominates in austral winter at 270 hectopascals and drops to less than half but is still significant at 430 hectopascals. Emission contributions are not significant at these two levels. The IAV of lightning over this region also contributes to the IAV of ozone in September and December. Over the tropical southeastern Pacific, the contribution of the IAV of stratospheric input is significant at 270 and 430 hectopascals in austral winter, and emissions have little influence.

Abstract

We provide an overview of the nadir measurements of carbon monoxide (CO) obtained thus far by the Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES). The instrument is a high resolution array Fourier transform spectrometer designed to measure infrared spectral radiances from low Earth orbit. It is one of four instruments successfully launched onboard the Aura platform into a sun synchronous orbit at an altitude of 705 km on July 15, 2004 from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. Nadir spectra are recorded at 0.06/cm spectral resolution with a nadir footprint of 5 x 8 km. We describe the TES retrieval approach for the analysis of the nadir measurements, report averaging kernels for typical tropical and polar ocean locations, characterize random and systematic errors for those locations, and describe instrument performance changes in the CO spectral region as a function of time. Sample maps of retrieved CO for the middle and upper troposphere from global surveys during December 2005 and April 2006 highlight the potential of the results for measurement and tracking of global pollution and determining air quality from space.
