Abstract Background Poor subjective sleep quality, depressive symptoms and fatigue occur frequently in postpartum. However, the dynamics of their respective associations from prepartum throughout the maternity period in function of baby feeding method have not been fully elucidated. Methods Prospective, longitudinal study using validated questionnaires probing for sleep quality, insomnia, fatigue and depressive symptoms at 35–37 weeks of gestation and at 2, 8 and 12 weeks postpartum in the obstetric departments of two Flemish hospitals. Somers’d ordinal correlation was used for correlations between the results of questionnaires (ratio variables) and the feeding method variable (an ordinal variable); T tests (normal data) or Mann Whitney (non normal data) tests for equality of means; ordinal regression (‘Proportional odds model’) to investigate the predictive value of parameters at one moment on the feeding method choice at a later moment; logistic regression to investigate the predictive value of parameters on later change of feeding method. Results 188 women indicating a choice for either bottle or breastfeeding in prepartum (27–35 weeks’ gestation) were included. Higher fatigue assessed through the Fatigue Severity Scale within late pregnancy was moderately associated with primary bottle feeding choice. Fatigue decreased at early and late postpartum in bottle feeding (-0.38 ± 1.04; p = .110 and − 0.31 ± 1.01; p = .642 respectively), but remained unchanged from late pregnancy through early and late postpartum in breastfeeding (0.04 ± 1.21; p = .110 and − 0.27 ± 0.96; p = .642 respectively), resulting in similar fatigue in both feeding methods in early through late postpartum. There were no differences in sleep quality or insomnia symptoms at all time points. Presence of postpartum depressive symptoms were associated with early switching to bottle feeding (Somers’ d correlation 0.11 (p = .021). Conclusions Fatigue and depressive symptoms are inversely associated with breastfeeding initiation or maintenance and influence feeding method dynamics.

AimsTo determine the impact of breastfeeding on the risk of postpartum glucose intolerance in women with gestational diabetes.MethodsSub-analysis of two multi-centric prospective cohort studies (BEDIP-N and MELINDA) in 1008 women with gestational diabetes. Data were collected during pregnancy and at a mean of 12 weeks postpartum. Multivariate logistic regression was used to estimate the effect of breastfeeding on glucose intolerance, with adjustment for ethnicity, education, income, professional activity and BMI.ResultsOf all participants, 56.3% (567) breastfed exclusively, 10.1% (102) gave mixed milk feeding and 33.6% (339) did not breastfeed. Mean breastfeeding duration was 3.8 ± 2.4 and 3.7 ± 2.1 months in the breastfeeding and mixed milk feeding groups (p=0.496). The rate of glucose intolerance was lower in both the breastfeeding [22.3% (126)] and mixed milk feeding [25.5% (26)] groups compared to the no breastfeeding group [29.5% (100)], with an adjusted OR of 0.7 (95% CI 0.5–1.0) for glucose intolerance in the breastfeeding group compared to no breastfeeding group and an adjusted OR of 0.7 (95% CI 0.4–1.2) for the mixed milk feeding group compared to the no breastfeeding group. Postpartum, breastfeeding women had a lower BMI, less often postpartum weight retention, lower fasting triglycerides, less insulin resistance and a higher insulin secretion-sensitivity index-2 than the mixed milk feeding and no breastfeeding group. The mixed milk feeding group was more often from an non-White background, had a lower blood pressure and lower fasting triglycerides compared to the no breastfeeding group.ConclusionsBreastfeeding (exclusive and mixed milk feeding) is associated with less glucose intolerance and a better metabolic profile in early postpartum in women with gestational diabetes.

Aims: The goal was to evaluate tibiofemoral knee joint kinematics during stair descent, by simulating the full stair descent motion in vitro. The knee joint kinematics were evaluated for two types of knee implants: bi-cruciate retaining and bi-cruciate stabilized. It was hypothesized that the bi-cruciate retaining implant better approximates native kinematics. Methods: The in vitro study included 20 specimens which were tested during a full stair descent with physiological muscle forces in a dynamic knee rig. Laxity envelopes were measured by applying external loading conditions in varus/valgus and internal/external direction. Results: The laxity results show that both implants are capable of mimicking the native internal/external-laxity during the controlled lowering phase. The kinematic results show that the bi-cruciate retaining implant tends to approximate the native condition better compared to bi-cruciate stabilized implant. This is valid for the internal/external rotation and the anteroposterior translation during all phases of the stair descent, and for the compression-distraction of the knee joint during swing and controlled lowering phase. Conclusion: The results show a better approximation of the native kinematics by the bi-cruciate retaining knee implant compared to the bi-cruciate stabilized knee implant for internal/external rotation and anteroposterior translation. Contribution: An education innovation in control engineering using practical setups and its evaluation based on a three-year student feedback study and examination grades. Background: Based on extensive research, education's transition toward active learning and more practical experience has been shown to increase learning outcomes. Contrary to virtual and remote labs, a practical session with an individual setup for each student provides the most practical experience. Intended Outcomes: To show a positive effect on learning performance by integrating practical sessions in basic control engineering. Application Design: Presenting low cost setups that can be mass produced and adapt to the course's growing complexity. These setups are evaluated during a three-year feedback study. Findings: The developed setups increased understanding of theoretical concepts. The new methodology significantly improved students' average grades. The students' interest in control theory is triggered. This case study could guide other institutions toward successfully implementing highly individual practical sessions for large groups.

BackgroundData are limited on pregnancy outcomes of normal glucose tolerant (NGT) women with a low glycemic value measured during the 75g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). Our aim was to evaluate maternal characteristics and pregnancy outcomes of NGT women with low glycemia measured at fasting, 1-hour or 2-hour OGTT.MethodsThe Belgian Diabetes in Pregnancy-N study was a multicentric prospective cohort study with 1841 pregnant women receiving an OGTT to screen for gestational diabetes (GDM). We compared the characteristics and pregnancy outcomes in NGT women according to different groups [(4.4mmol/L)] of lowest glycemia measured during the OGTT. Pregnancy outcomes were adjusted for confounding factors such as body mass index (BMI) and gestational weight gain.ResultsOf all NGT women, 10.7% (172) had low glycemia (4.4mmol/L, 29.9%, n=482), a better metabolic profile with a lower BMI, less insulin resistance and better beta-cell function. AimsTo characterize women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) positive for type 1 diabetes-related autoimmune antibodies (T1D-related autoantibodies) in pregnancy and to evaluate their risk for long-term glucose intolerance.MethodsIn a multi-centric prospective cohort study with 1843 women receiving universal screening for GDM with a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), autoantibodies were measured in women with GDM: insulin autoantibodies (IAA), islet cell antibodies (ICA), insulinoma-associated protein-2 antibodies (IA-2A) and glutamic acid decarboxylase antibodies (GADA). Long-term follow-up ( ± 4.6 years after delivery) with a 75 g OGTT and re-measurement of autoantibodies was done in women with a history of GDM and autoantibody positivity in pregnancy.ResultsOf all women with GDM (231), 80.5% (186) received autoantibody measurement at a mean of 26.2 weeks in pregnancy, of which 8.1% (15) had one positive antibody (seven with IAA, two with ICA, four with IA-2A and two with GADA). Electrospun nanofiber membranes show high potential in various application fields (e.g., filtration, catalysis, and sensing). Nevertheless, knowledge of the mechanical behavior, and more specifically, the deformation of nanofiber membranes is still limited today which can complicate the appliance of nanofiber membranes in applications where they are mechanically loaded. In this paper, we, therefore, analyzed the mechanical behavior of polymeric nanofiber membranes with different fiber orientations (random and aligned) extensively. Polyamide 6 was used as a representative reference polymer for proof-of-concept. Mechanical tests show that all membranes have a coherent deformation behavior at the macroscale up to the point of fracture. Large variations in stiffness, ultimate strength, and ultimate strain were observed between membranes with different fiber orientations (Random: E-mod: 370 ± 34 MP; UTS: 38.5 ± 6.0 MPa; εmax: 30.0 ± 2.8%; Parallel aligned: E-mod: 753 ± 11 MPa; UTS: 55.4 ± 0.8 MPa; εmax: 12.0 ± 0.1%; Perpendicular aligned: E-mod: 24.1 ± 3.7 MPa; UTS:/; εmax: >40%). This shows the versatility and tunability of the mechanical behavior of these nanofiber membranes. At the microscale, the fibrous structure results in deformation mechanisms that resist failure formation and progression when the membrane is mechanically loaded. This results in a high fracture resistance, even for pre-damaged membranes. Realignment of the fibers along the loading direction causes crack tip blunting, locally reinforcing the membrane.

The continuous development of advanced catalysts to increase process yield and selectivity is crucial. A high specific surface area and a good active phase dispersion are generally essential to create catalytic materials with a large number of active sites. Notably, materials with a fibrous morphology are appealing because of their large surface‐to‐volume ratio and flexibility. This contribution highlights the morphology of different types of fibrous structures currently under investigation, all the way from the nanoscale to the macroscale and back, where the distinction lies in the length and diameter of the fibers, as well as in the connection between the structures. Fibers with at least one submicron to nanoscale characteristic result in a higher yield, but can display practical usability issues when unbound. Therefore, fibrous structure catalysts with a balance between the small diameter and handleability are important for industrial viability. By combining different morphologies, the best of both nanomaterials and macroscopic integer materials can be combined into advanced catalytic materials. This overview showcases the large potential of these materials but makes clear that further research is needed to keep expanding the use and effectiveness of fibrous structures in catalysis. Ageing infrastructure is of major concern for different industrial sectors across Europe. Fatigue cracking is one of the most important damage mechanisms that affect structural health of welded steel structures. Fatigue assessment of welded details in large, complex structures is a difficult and time consuming task. In this paper a numerical framework for fatigue assessment of welded details is presented. In view of industrial applications, automated hot spot stress algorithms for plate and tubular joints were developed and integrated in the framework. The framework provides practicing engineers with an effective tool for fatigue assessment of different components in conformity with leading design codes. Furthermore, apart from Miner’s rule the framework allows easy implementation of different non-linear damage accumulation models in order to account for load interaction and load sequence effects.

AimsTo determine the preferred method of screening for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).Methods1804 women from a prospective study (NCT02036619) received a glucose challenge test (GCT) and 75g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) between 24-28 weeks. The Euler–Lagrange (EL) formalism is extensively used to describe a wide range of systems. The choice of the generalised coordinates is not unique and influences the intricacy of the coupling terms between the equations of motion. A coordinate transformation can vastly reduce this complexity, yielding a (partially) decoupled system description. This work proposes a state transform of the original EL equation resulting in an identity inertia matrix. Since the centrifugal and Coriolis terms originate from the derivatives of the inertia (or mass) matrix, the matrix containing these terms is either reduced to a skew-symmetric one or in a limited number of instances reduced to zero. In contrast to prior work, that relied on solving a set of ordinary differential equations, the transformation matrix can be determined using an algebraic equation. As a result, the suggested methodology yields an easy-to-use and powerful tool for reducing and (partially) decoupling any equations of motion expressed in the EL formalism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
