In this work we present the results from two experiments dedicated to search for quadrupolecollective isovector valence-shell excitation, the states with so-called mixed proton-neutron symmetry (MSS), in nuclei around the doubly magic nucleus 208Pb. 212Po was studied in an α-transfer reaction. 204Hg was studied in an inverse kinematics Coulomb excitation reaction on a carbon target. Both experiments provide indications for existence of one-phonon MSSs. Those are the first experimentally identified MSSs in the mass A ≈ 208 region.

Lifetimes of first 4+ and 6+ states have been measured in neutron-rich isotopes of Zr, Mo, Ru and Pd using the recoil distance Doppler shift method at GANIL. The nuclei were produced through a fusion-fission reaction in inverse kinematics. The fission fragments were fully identified in the large-acceptance VAMOS spectrometer and γ-rays were detected in coincidence with the EXOGAM germanium array. Lifetimes of excited states in the range of 1–100 ps were measured with the Cologne plunger. Preliminary lifetime results are presented as well as a discussion on the evolution of the collectivity in this region.

The lifetimes of the $ 2^+_1$ , the $ 2^+_2$ and the $ 3^-_1$ states of Po have been measured in the Pb(C,Be)Po transfer reaction by the Doppler-shift attenuation method. The result for the lifetime of the $ 2^+_1$ state is about three times shorter than the adopted value. However, the new value still does not allow for a consistent description of the properties of the yrast $ 2^+_1$ , $ 4^+_1$ , $ 6^+_1$ , and $ 8^+_1$ states of Po in the framework of nuclear shell models. Quasi-particle Phonon Model (QPM) calculations also cannot overcome this problem thus indicating the existence of a peculiarity which is neglected in both theoretical approaches. Lifetimes of short-lived excited states in a wide range of neutron-rich fission fragments were measured using the recoil distance Doppler shift (RDDS) technique, which was applied to fusion-fission reactions in inverse kinematics for the first time. The fission fragments were identified eventby- event in mass, charge, and atomic number using the VAMOS magnetic spectrometer at GANIL. Gamma rays originating from the fission fragments were measured with the EXOGAM array of Ge Clover detectors around the target position. Using a degrader, the change in the Doppler shift of the γ ray allows the application of the RDDS method. Details of the experimental technique will be discussed and the status for the ongoing analysis for odd-mass yttrium isotopes will be presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reduced quadrupole transition probabilities for low-lying transitions in neutron-rich 84,86Se are investigated with a recoil distance Doppler shift (RDDS) experiment. The experiment was performed at the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN) Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro using the Cologne Plunger device for the RDDS technique and the AGATA Demonstrator array for the γ-ray detection coupled to the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer for an event-by-event particle identification. In Se86 the level lifetime of the yrast 21+ state and an upper limit for the lifetime of the 41+ state are determined for the first time. The results of 86Se are in agreement with previously reported predictions of large-scale shell-model calculations using Ni78-I and Ni78-II effective interactions. In addition, intrinsic shape parameters of lowest yrast states in 86Se are calculated. In semimagic 84Se level lifetimes of the yrast 41+ and 61+ states are determined for the first time. Large-scale shell-model calculations using effective interactions Ni78-II, JUN45, jj4b, and jj4pna are performed. The calculations describe B(E2;21+01+) and B(E2;61+⊖41+) fairly well and point out problems in reproducing the experimental B(E2;41+⊖21+). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lifetime measurements with the recoil distance Doppler-shift technique have been performed to determine yrast E2 transition strengths in 178Pt. The experimental data are related to those on neighboring Pt isotopes, especially recent data on 180Pt, and compared to calculations within the interacting boson model and a Hartree-Fock Bogoliubov approach. These models predict prolate deformed ground states in Pt isotopes close to neutron midshell consistent with the experimental findings. Further, evidence was found that the prolate intruder structure observed in neutron-deficient Hg isotopes that is minimum in energy in 182Hg becomes the ground state configuration in 178Pt and neighboring 180Pt with nearly identical transition quadrupole moments. The new data on 178Pt are further discussed in the context of the systematics along the Pt isotopic chain with respect to a possible sharp shape transition towards a weakly deformed or a quasi-vibrational ground state whereas the prolate structure increases in energy in 174,176Pt and becomes an intruder configuration similar to, for example, 180,182Hg.

To study the nuclear structure of neutron-rich titanium isotopes, a lifetime measurement was performed at the Grand Accélérateur National d'Ions Lourds (GANIL) facility in Caen, France. The nucleiwere produced in a multinucleon-transfer reaction by using a 6.76 MeV/u 238U beam. The Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) was employed for the γ-ray detection and target-like recoils were identified event-by-event by the large-acceptance variable mode spectrometer (VAMOS++). Preliminary level lifetimes of the (5/2−) to 13/2− states of the yrast band in the neutron-rich nucleus 53Ti were measured for the first time employing the recoil distance Doppler-shift (RDDS) method and the compact plunger for deep inelastic reactions. The differential decay curve method (DDCM) was used to obtain the lifetimes from the RDDS data.

Transition probabilities of intermediate-spin yrast and non-yrast excitations in 80,82Se were investigated in a recoil distance Doppler-shift (RDDS) experiment performed at the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. The Cologne Plunger device for deep inelastic scattering was used for the RDDS technique and was combined with the AGATA Demonstrator array for the γ-ray detection and coupled to the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer for an event-by-event particle identification. In 80Se, the level lifetimes of the yrast (6+1) and (8+1) states and of a non-yrast band feeding the yrast 4+1 state are determined. A spin and parity assignment of the head of this sideband is discussed based on the experimental results and supported by large-scale shell-model calculations. In 82Se, the level lifetimes of the yrast 6+1 state and the yrare 4+2 state and lifetime limits of the yrast (10+1) state and of the 5-1 state are determined. Although the experimental results contain large uncertainties, they are interpreted with care in terms of large-scale shell-model calculations using the effective interactions JUN45 and jj44b. Lifetimes of excited states in 107Tc, 109Rh, 111Rh, and 113Rh were measured at GANIL using the Recoil-Distance Doppler Shift method. The neutron-rich nuclei were produced in fission reactions in inverse kinematics with a 238U beam impinging on a 9Be target. Fission fragments were identified event-by-event in the ray-tracing spectrometer VAMOS++ and correlated with prompt γ rays observed around the target position with the EXOGAM Ge detector array. Several lifetimes were obtained for states in the positive-parity yrast bands in the four nuclei and compared to triaxial particle-rotor calculations. The results clarify the configuration for the strongest positive-parity band in 107Tc and suggest a gradual increase of triaxial deformation with atomic number Z, reaching almost maximum triaxiality for the neutron-rich Rh nuclei. Lifetimes of the 2 1 + states in 44 Ti, 48,50 Cr, and 52 Fe were determined with high accuracy exploiting the recoil distance Doppler-shift method. The reduced E2 transition strengths of 44 Ti and 52 Fe differ considerably from previously known values. A systematic increase in collectivity is found for the N = Z nuclei compared to neighboring isotopes. The B ( E2 ) values along the Ti, Cr, and Fe isotopic chains are compared to shell-model calculations employing established interactions for the 0 f 1 p shell, as well as a novel effective shell-model Hamiltonian starting from a realistic nucleon–nucleon potential. The theoretical approaches underestimate the B ( E2 ) values for the lower-mass Ti isotopes. Lifetimes of yrast and nonyrast states of 102Pd populated via the 92Zr( 13C, 3n) reaction are measured by means of the recoil distance Doppler-shift technique with a Cologne plunger coupled to a GASP spectrometer. The event-by-event data accumulated at 24 plunger distances in the range of 0.1 μm to 9 mm are analyzed using the differential decay curve method. The resulting B(E2) values of the γ transitions depopulating yrast-band members up to the I π = 8+ state are found to deviate significantly from the corresponding predictions of the E(5) critical-point symmetry. Background: In neutron-rich nuclei around N=40 rapid changes in nuclear structure can be observed. While Ni68 exhibits signatures of a doubly magic nucleus, experimental data along the isotopic chains in even more exotic Fe and Cr isotopes-such as excitation energies and transition strengths-suggest a sudden rise in collectivity toward N=40. Purpose: Reduced quadrupole transition strengths for low-lying transitions in neutron-rich 58,60,62Cr are investigated. This gives quantitative new insights into the evolution of quadrupole collectivity in the neutron-rich region close to N=40. Method: The recoil distance Doppler-shift (RDDS) technique was applied to measure lifetimes of low-lying states in Cr58,60,62Cr. The experiment was carried out at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) with the SeGA array in a plunger configuration coupled to the S800 magnetic spectrograph. The states of interest were populated by means of one-proton knockout reactions. Results: Data reveal a rapid increase in quadrupole collectivity for 58,60,62Cr toward N=40 and point to stronger quadrupole deformations compared to neighboring Fe isotopes. The experimental B(E2) values are reproduced well with state-of-the-art shell-model calculations using the LNPS effective interaction. A consideration of intrinsic quadrupole moments and B42 ratios suggest an evolution toward a rotational nature of the collective structures in 60,62Cr. Compared to 58Cr, experimental B42 and B62 values for 60Cr are in better agreement with the E(5) limit. Conclusion: Our results indicate that collective excitations in neutron-rich Cr isotopes saturate at N=38, which is in agreement with theoretical predictions. More detailed experimental data of excited structures and interband transitions are needed for a comprehensive understanding of quadrupole collectivity close to N=40. Lifetime measurements have been made in the ground-state band of the transitional nucleus 138Gd from coincidence recoil-distance Doppler-shift data. 138Gd nuclei were produced using the 106Cd (36Ar, 2p2n) reaction with a beam energy of 190 MeV. Reduced transition probabilities have been extracted from the lifetime data collected with the Köln plunger placed at the target position of the JUROGAM-II array. The B(E2) values have been compared with predictions from X(5) critical-point calculations, which describe the phase transition between vibrational and axially symmetric nuclear shapes, as well as with IBM-1 calculations at the critical point. While the excitation energies in 138Gd are consistent with X(5) predictions, the large uncertainties associated with the measured B(E2) values cannot preclude vibrational and rotational contributions to the low-lying structure of 138Gd. Although experimental knowledge for the low-lying γ and β-vibrational bands in 138Gd is limited, potential-energy surface calculations suggest an increase in γ softness in the ground-state band. In order to more fully account for the effects of γ softness, the X(5) and IBM-1 calculations need to be extended to include the γ degree of freedom for 138Gd. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
