Narrative skills play an important role in children's reading, communication, and critical thinking. Most studies on narrative skills are based on monolingual children from middle- to upper middle-class populations and few have examined bilingual children's narratives outside of the western context. These factors may impose different sociocultural influences on children's storytelling abilities. The current study focuses on English-Mandarin bilingual children in Singapore and explores: (1) how English-Mandarin bilinguals apply their Mandarin lexical-grammatical proficiency to a given narrative task and (2) the compensatory strategies they employ in their Mandarin narratives. Data was obtained from 186 K1 pre-schoolers (85 boys and 101 girls) aged four to five. Children's Mandarin narrative skills were assessed with the Multilingual Assessment Instrument for Narratives (MAIN; Gagarina et al. in ZAS Pap Linguist 56:155-155, 2012. https://doi.org/10.21248/zaspil.56.2019.414). Their macrostructural knowledge (e.g., story grammar) was scored with the MAIN coding scheme, and their microstructural knowledge (e.g., mean length of utterance) was calculated with CLAN. Children's Mandarin lexical-grammatical proficiency (i.e., receptive vocabulary, receptive grammar, and semantic fluency) was assessed with standard tests. The results indicate that compared to children's microstructural knowledge, their macrostructural knowledge was more influenced by their Mandarin competence. Children used a variety of strategies to compensate for their limited Mandarin competence, and the most frequently used ones were generalisation (e.g., all classifiers of nouns were "[foreign character omitted]"), codeswitching (at both the word and sentential levels), and sentential structural transfer.

Abstract Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) seriously threatens human health and the quality of life, cognitive impairment is considered as a common complication of T2DM. Neuroimaging meta-analysis found brain functional and structural abnormality in patients with T2DM. Therefore, the purpose of the meta-analysis was to identify brain regions of patients with T2DM-related cognitive impairment (T2DM-CI) where functional and structural indicators changed together or could not synchronize. A literature screening of neuroimaging studies on cognitive impairment in T2DM was conducted from 1 January 2007 to 26 May 2023 in PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Medline databases. The functional indicators we studied were amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF), regional homogeneity (ReHo) and degree centrality (DC), while the structural indicator was gray matter (GM), which included gray matter volume (GMV) and cerebral cortical thickness. Studies reporting ALFF, ReHo, DC and GM abnormalities between T2DM-CI and healthy controls (HCs) were selected and their significant peak coordinates (x, y, z) and effect size (t-value) were extracted to perform a meta-analysis using anisotropic effect size sign differential mapping (AES-SDM) 5.15 software. Moreover, the brain regions with significant differences obtained from meta-analysis were saved as masks and then validated in our data. Total 19 studies and 20 datasets were involved in this study. Compared to HCs, combining ALFF, ReHo, and DC measurements, the brain activity of the left anterior cingulate/paracingulate gyri (ACC.L, BA24) in T2DM-CI patients increased significantly, while the brain activity of the left lingual gyrus (LING.L, BA18) in T2DM-CI patients decreased significantly. The GM indicator of the right superior temporal gyrus (STG.R, BA42) and left inferior occipital gyrus (IOG.L, BA19) in T2DM-CI patients decreased significantly. Meta-regression analysis showed the negative relationship between the brain activity reduction in LING.L and the percentage of female patients, as well as the negative relationship between GM reduction in IOG.L and T2DM duration. Furthermore, we validated a decrease in brain activity in the LING.L of T2DM-CI patients in our independent dataset. The decrease of brain activity in LING.L and the decrease of GM in IOG.L were closely related to visual impairment in T2DM-CI patients. These abnormal brain regions may be the main targets for future research, early intervention can delay the further development of cognitive impairment in T2DM patients and improve their quality of life, which also provided early biomarkers for clarifying the mechanism of cognitive impairment in T2DM.

Abstract Background Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a toxin widely found in aquafeed ingredients, and hypoxia is a common problem in fish farming. In practice, aquatic animals tend to be more sensitive to hypoxia while feeds are contaminated with OTA, but no studies exist in this area. This research investigated the multiple biotoxicities of OTA and hypoxia combined on the liver of grass carp and explored the mitigating effect of curcumin (CUR). Methods A total of 720 healthy juvenile grass carp (11.06 ± 0.05 g) were selected and assigned randomly to 4 experimental groups: control group (without OTA and CUR), 1.2 mg/kg OTA group, 400 mg/kg CUR group, and 1.2 mg/kg OTA + 400 mg/kg CUR group with three replicates each for 60 d. Subsequently, 32 fish were selected, divided into normoxia (18 fish) and hypoxia (18 fish) groups, and subjected to hypoxia stress for 96 h. Results CUR can attenuate histopathological damage caused by coming to OTA and hypoxia by reducing vacuolation and nuclear excursion. The alleviation of this damage was associated with the attenuation of apoptosis in the mitochondrial pathway by decreasing the expression of the pro-apoptotic proteins Caspase 3, 8, 9, Bax, and Apaf1 while increasing the expression of the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2, and attenuation of endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) by reducing Grp78 expression and chop levels. This may be attributed to the fact that the addition of CUR increased the levels of catalase (CAT) and glutathione reductase (GSH), increased antioxidant capacity, and ensured the proper functioning of respiratory chain complexes I and II, which in turn reduced the high production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), thus alleviating apoptosis and ERS. Conclusions In conclusion, our data demonstrate the effectiveness of CUR in attenuating liver injury caused by the combination of OTA and hypoxia. This study confirms the feasibility and efficacy of adding natural products to mitigate toxic damage to aquatic animals.

The indoor terahertz (THz) wave reflection and transmission characteristics were clarified as essential for the construction of an integrated channel model for terahertz integrated sensing and communication (ISAC). Measurement campaigns were carried out on seven indoor materials at 130~134 GHz using a vector network analyzer-based measurement platform, and the frequency dependence and incidence angle dependence of the terahertz channel reflection and transmission characteristics were analyzed, which were compared with the measurement results at 282~290 GHz, to have the reflection loss characteristics in the two frequency bands revealed. A quantum particle swarm optimization algorithm was used to extract the material electromagnetic parameters, and a joint frequency-incidence angle model of the reflection coefficient was proposed. The results are shown to indicate that the variation rule of the reflection coefficient with frequency and incidence angle can be accurately portrayed by the model. The material propagation coefficient database of the 130~134 GHz band is supplemented by the research results, the electromagnetic parameter dataset is enriched, and the reflection coefficient model is established. The data basis and model reference for the detection, identification, and environmental reconstruction of the terahertz ISAC system are provided.

D-mannose, essential for protein glycosylation, has been reported to have immunomodulatory effects and to maintain intestinal flora homeostasis. In addition to evaluating growth performance, we examined the impact of D-mannose on the structure of epithelial cells and apical junction complexes in the animal intestine. All 1800 grass carp (16.20 ± 0.01 g) were randomly divided into six treatments with six replicates of 50 fish each and fed with six different levels of D-mannose (0.52, 1.75, 3.02, 4.28, 5.50 and 6.78 g/kg diet) for 70 d. Abstract Background Methionine (Met) is the only sulfur-containing amino acid among animal essential amino acids, and methionine deficiency (MD) causes tissue damage and cell death in animals. The common modes of cell death include apoptosis, autophagy, pyroptosis, necroptosis. However, the studies about the major modes of cell death caused by MD have not been reported, which worth further study. Methods Primary hepatocytes from grass carp were isolated and treated with different doses of Met (0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5 mmol/L) to examine the expression of apoptosis, pyroptosis, autophagy and necroptosis-related proteins. Based on this, we subsequently modeled pyroptosis using lipopolysaccharides and nigericin sodium salt, then autophagy inhibitors chloroquine (CQ), AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) inhibitors compound C (CC) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavengers N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) were further used to examine the expression of proteins related to pyroptosis, autophagy and AMPK pathway in MD-treated cells respectively. Results MD up-regulated B-cell lymphoma protein 2 (Bax), microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 II (LC3 II), and down-regulated the protein expression levels of B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2), sequestosome 1 (p62), cleaved-caspase-1, cleaved-interleukin (IL)-1β, and receptor-interacting protein kinase (RIP) 1 in hepatocytes, while it did not significantly affect RIP3. In addition, MD significantly increased the protein expression of liver kinase B1 (LKB1), p-AMPK, and Unc-51-like kinase 1 (ULK1) without significant effect on p-target of rapamycin. Subsequently, the use of CQ increased the protein expression of NOD-like receptor thermal protein domain associated protein 3 (NLRP3), cleaved-caspase-1, and cleaved-IL-1β inhibited by MD; the use of CC significantly decreased the protein expression of MD-induced LC3 II and increased the protein expression of MD-suppressed p62; then the use of NAC decreased the MD-induced p-AMPK protein expression. Conclusion MD promoted autophagy and apoptosis, but inhibited pyroptosis and necroptosis. MD inhibited pyroptosis may be related regarding the promotion of autophagy. MD activated AMPK by inducing ROS production which in turn promoted autophagy. These results could provide partial theoretical basis for the possible mechanisms of Met in ensuring the normal structure and function of animal organs. Furthermore, ferroptosis is closely related to redox states, it is worth investigating whether MD affects ferroptosis in hepatocytes.

Ochratoxin A (OTA) is one of the most common pollutants in aquatic feed. As a first line of defense, intestinal barriers could be utilized against OTA in order to prevent disorders. Natural product supplementation is one of the most popular strategies to alleviate toxicity induced by mycotoxins, but there is a lack of knowledge about how it functions in the teleost intestine. In this study, 720 juvenile grass carp of about 11 g were selected and four treatment groups (control group, OTA group, curcumin [Cur] group, and OTA + Cur group) were set up to conduct a 60-day growth test. After the test, the growth performance and intestinal health related indexes of grass carp were investigated. The addition of dietary Cur could have the following main results: (1) inhibit absorption and promote efflux transporters mRNA expression, reducing the residuals of OTA, (2) decrease oxidative stress by reducing oxidative damage and enhancing the expression of antioxidant enzymes, (3) promote mitochondrial fusion proteins to inhibit the expression of mitotic proteins and mitochondrial autophagy proteins and enhance mitochondrial function, (4) reduce necroptosis-related gene expression through inhibiting the tumor necrotic factor receptor-interacting protein kinase/mixed lineage kinase domain-like pathway, (5) reduce the expression of pro-inflammatory factors by inhibiting the Toll-like receptor 4/nuclear factor-κB signaling pathway to alleviate the intestinal inflammatory response. In summary, the results suggested that Cur could alleviate OTA-induced intestinal damage by enhancing antioxidant capacity and mitochondrial function as well as reducing necroptosis and inflammation in the grass carp intestine. This study provided a theoretical basis and production implications for dietary Cur that could improve growth performance and alleviate the intestinal damage induced by OTA in fish.

This research evaluated the effects of copper (Cu) on intestinal antioxidant capacity and apical junctional complex (AJC) in juvenile grass carp. A total of 1080 healthy juvenile grass carp (11.16 ± 0.01 g) were fed six diets including different dosages of Cu, namely 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 mg/kg (Cu citrate [CuCit] as Cu source) and 3 mg/kg (CuSO4·5H2O as Cu source). The trial lasted for 9 weeks. The findings revealed that dietary optimal Cu supplementation (2.2 to 4.1 mg/kg) promoted intestinal growth, including intestinal length, intestinal length index, intestinal weight, and intestinal somatic index (P 0.05). Background Promoting the construction of county-level medical communities is a crucial measure for establishing a hierarchical medical system. While the domestic academic community has conducted extensive theoretical and empirical research in this field, there is a lack of comprehensive summaries of existing research findings. This study uses bibliometric methods to systematically review the progress of related literature in this field, providing insights and references for the high-quality development of county-level medical communities. Objective To conduct a visual analysis of the literature on county-level medical communities in China, exploring research hotspots and frontier trends in this field. Methods Using the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) database, literature related to county-level medical communities published between 2016 and 2023 was retrieved on February 25, 2024. CiteSpace software was employed for bibliometric visualization analysis of the literature, focusing on publication years, authors and institutions, keyword co-occurrence, clustering, timeline distribution, and burst detection. Results A total of 481 articles were included. The publication volume in this field has been increasing, driven by policy factors, with 65 articles (13.51%) published between 2016 and 2019, 167 articles (34.72%) published between 2020 and 2021, and 249 articles (51.77%) published between 2022 and 2023. The top three authors in terms of publication volume were CHEN Yingchun, WANG Fang, and ZHENG Ying, each with 8 articles. The top two keywords in terms of centrality and cluster size are "medical community" and "hierarchical medical system". The timeline distribution indicated that "hierarchical medical system" was the earliest and most sustained research hotspot in this field. Additionally, clusters such as "integration of medical prevention" "performance evaluation" "countermeasures" and "patients" emerged as research hotspots. Burst detection revealed that "medical insurance fund" "chronic disease" "management model" "development strategy" and "rural doctors" were recent research hotspots and future directions in this field. Conclusion Key research hotspots in the field of county-level medical communities include the construction of hierarchical medical systems, focusing on chronic diseases and the integration of public health services, and exploring performance evaluation pathways. Future research trends indicate a strong focus on deepening policy research, using county-level medical community construction to promote the establishment of hierarchical medical systems, advancing innovation in the integration of medical prevention, enhancing performance evaluation, and optimizing internal management.

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), an important fungal toxin, exists mainly in plant feed ingredients and animals consuming feed contaminated with AFB1 will have reduced growth and impaired health condition mainly due to oxidative stress and reduced immunity. Our previous study found that AFB1 caused oxidative damage and inhibited muscle development of zebrafish. 4-Methylesculetin (4-ME), a coumarin derivative, is now used in biochemistry and medicine widely because of its antioxidant function. Whether 4-ME could alleviate the inhibition of muscle development in grass carp induced by AFB1 has not been reported. In this experiment, 720 healthy grass carp (11.40 ± 0.01 g) were randomly divided into 4 groups with 3 replicates of 60 fish each, including control group, AFB1 group (60 μg/kg diet AFB1), 4-ME group (10 mg/kg diet 4-ME), and AFB1+4-ME group (60 μg/kg diet AFB1 + 10 mg/kg 4-ME diet), for a 60-d growth experiment. Glycyrrhetinic acid (GA) has been shown to promote growth characteristics and play a crucial role in anti-inflammatory responses in animals. To investigate the effects of dietary GA supplementation on growth performance, intestinal inflammation, and intestinal barrier protection in largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) fed a high-fat diet (HFD), a 77-day feeding experiment was conducted.
