The knowledge integration (KI) approach has been widely studied and recommended for improving the learning and teaching of science subjects (biology, physics, etc.). If the cognitive processes of learning, however, do not vary across domains, then what is helpful for science should also be helpful for dance. Choosing the teaching and learning of an improvisational and creative dance as a case on the far opposite end from the usual seated and normative science curriculum, one randomized-controlled trial and one before-after intervention trial were conducted to test if a KI curriculum is more effective than a common curriculum. Both trials found the KI approach significantly more effective in improving the performance of young dancers. As found, KI can be effectively applied to the curriculum design of breakdance, thus providing evidence to support the universality of this approach. It is implied that KI can, ergo, benefit learners of more subjects, including the artful ones, and need not be siloed as relevant only for science education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Veteran breakers have always viewed their dance as a form of art, but the public often views it as a competitive sport, trying to standardize and commercialize this dance as other forms of physical education often are. The World Dance Sport Federation has recently succeeded in adding 'breakdance' into the Olympic movement and the first ever Olympic event of its kind took place during the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires. Twenty years of historical hermeneutic research, ethnography, and social-scientific analysis have revealed a development trend in which the art of breaking has been becoming more and more similar to competitive sports, but these veterans believe that breaking is best encouraged to continue realizing its social, cultural, and artistic values. In order for more people to be able to enjoy the full range of its potential benefits, breaking should not be made to lose its unique characteristics during assimilation into the world of sports. Molecular genetic tools are needed to address questions as to the source and dynamics of transmission of the human blood fluke Schistosoma japonicum in regions where human infections have reemerged, and to characterize infrapopulations in individual hosts. The life stage that interests us as a target for collecting genotypic data is the miracidium, a very small larval stage that consequently yields very little DNA for analysis. Here, we report the successful development of a multiplex format permitting genotyping of 17 microsatellite loci in four sequential multiplex reactions using a single miracidium held on a Whatman Classic FTA indicating card. This approach was successful after short storage periods, but after long storage (>4 years), considerable difficulty was encountered in multiplex genotyping, necessitating the use of whole genome amplification (WGA) methods. WGA applied to cards stored for long periods of time resulted in sufficient DNA for accurate and repeatable genotyping. Trials and tests of these methods, as well as application to some field-collected samples, are reported, along with the discussion of the potential insights to be gained from such techniques.
