Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) experiments performed on high-power laser facilities produce a high intensity short pulse of 14 MeV neutrons. The interaction of such an environment with coaxial cables widely used for signals transmission of diagnostic equipments induces parasitic transient currents. Depending on the magnitude and shape of those currents, measurement signals are likely to be altered and electric devices might be damaged. This paper reviews our knowledge about the generation of parasitic current in polyethylene (PE), PolyTetraFluorEthylene (PTFE) and PolyEtherEtherKetone (PEEK) insulators subjected to an ICF neutron pulse. It provides a clear evidence of the existence of a prompt neutron component and a very fast, nanosecond delayed radiation induced electromotive force (RIEMF) in insulator response to very short neutron pulses. To assess phenomena occurring in coaxial cables under high flux of 14 MeV neutrons in D-T fusion experiments, a polyethylene, Teflontrade or vacuum sandwiched between two electrodes mock-up is proposed. This Mock-Up was exposed to the subnanosecond flux at the LLE OMEGA facility in Rochester (above 1018 n/cm2-s) normally to the electrodes or with a tilt angle. A radiation induced current probing a radiation induced electromotive force (RIEMF) is measured and a model is proposed based on the range of the neutron-induced recoils. The GEANT4 simulation toolkit has been used to take advantage of the implementation of both nuclear and electromagnetic processes in order to compute the tracks and the strong angle dependence. Good agreements between simulations and experimental results are found for polyethylene in contrast with Teflontrade where the 3-alpha break-up of 12C not considered in GEANT4 seems to make a major contribution to the measured induced current. It is a longstanding tradition of the IEEE Nuclear and Space Radiation Effects Conference (NSREC) to honor the Outstanding Conference Paper and the Outstanding Data Workshop Presentation. It is nice to see how the ANIMMA conference series has become a well-established event in the field of advancements in nuclear instrumentation, measurement methods, and their applications. Many colleagues have considered it already a “must-attend” meeting for themselves and also for their students and co-workers. It has now extended into the highly relevant fields of nuclear decommissioning and severe accident monitoring, of course not neglecting its “classic” topics such as research reactors and fundamental physics. I am glad to be able to assist with the making of this special issue on ANIMMA 2015 again, and I would like to thank the organizers of the conference to have chosen the IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science again for the collection of publication-grade material presented at the meeting. But I would also like to express my thanks to the Associate Editors that have conducted the peer-review process of all the manuscripts submitted in a highly professional manner. It is our goal to have every paper evaluated by at least three colleagues active in the field, and so the number of individuals that have contributed to this issue is high, again higher than in the previous years: not less than 459 colleagues have spent their valuable time by serving as reviewers for the material, whether they have attended the conference and submitted a manuscript themselves or not. The article reports on the Ninth European Conference on Radiation and its Effects held in Deauville in the French Normandy on September 10-14, 2007. The conference was attended by 320 delegates from 21 countries all over the world. The technical program consisted of 38 oral and 62 poster presentations. There were 14 lecturers in the one-day short course organized by Veronique Ferlet-Cavrois.
