The early Carboniferous Kushanhe Formation and Hantiereke Formation in the Kushanhe section in the piedmont of the southwestern margin of Tarim Basin are in a medium-deep water sedimentary environment with a stratigraphic thickness of more than 500 m, and the sedimentary facies is slope-shelf facies. Among these deposits, soft-sediment deformation structures (SSDS) are common, dominated by various types of slumps. The appearance of SSDS is related to the geotectonic environment of early Carboniferous in southwest Tarim Basin. In the Early Carboniferous, the Paleo-Tethys ocean dived under the Tarim plate, forming a back-arc structure, and a structural slope break belt easily appeared along the basin edge, which provided topographic conditions for the development of marginal platform marginal belt and slope facies. Under this background, the ultra-thick volcanic rocks of Wulate Formation accumulate along the subduction zone, and earthquakes with M> 5.0 are prone to occur. Landslides related to earthquakes and corresponding SSDS are easily triggered at the outer edge of the slope break zone. The large earthquake induced by tectonic environment is an important trigger factor of early Carboniferous SSDS. Therefore, the appearance of early carboniferous SSDS in Kushanhe section is an important sedimentary response to the early carboniferous piedmont tectonic activities in southwestern Tarim. The Taranaki Basin in New Zealand presents the most promising territory for strategies of hydrocarbon exploration and development. This basin contains multiple source rock levels in its sedimentary successions formed during syn- and post-rift periods. The deepest source rocks, found in the Rakopi Formation, were deposited in deltaic to deep marine environments and consist of gas-prone coal and organic-rich mudstone lithofacies. However, questions remain about the preservation of their organic carbon. This study integrates various organic geochemical analyses (such as Rock Eval pyrolysis, kerogen petrography, and biomarkers) to assess the hydrocarbon potential of the Rakopi coal and mudstone lithofacies. The organic carbon in Rakopi coals and mudstones originated from oxygenated bottom water, but swift burial during the initial rifting phase facilitated the preservation of organic materials. Rakopi coals are less mature than the mudstone facies and contain a mixture of desmocollinite, suberinite, and resinite macerals. In contrast, the mudstone lithofacies are enriched in liptodetrinite. The maceral mixture in the coal led to its elevated hydrogen index and likely facilitated early expulsion of liquid hydrocarbon phases. Regular steranes, diasteranes, and C29 sterane isomers distribution in the coal and mudstone extracts highlighted a greater terrestrial input in the coals, whereas significant marine input is observed in the mudstone extracts. Biomarkers in the coal and mudstone extracts are similar to some nearby oils discoveries in the Taranaki Basin, thereby confirming oil generation from both coal and mudstone lithofacies in the Rakopi Formation. Purpose: This is a retrospective case report in which we describe our findings in two cases of endophthalmitis associated with perforating gunshot injury, in which we documented intraocular intrusion of multiple eyelashes as a plausible source of infection. Patients and Methods: Two male patients, 22 and 29 years old, respectively, presented with endophthalmitis following primary repair of rupture globe secondary to gunshot injury. Both patients had vitrectomy and silicone oil injection. Preoperative imaging and intraoperative findings confirmed the perforating nature of the projectile. Results: In both patients, we detected eyelashes that were concealed either in the pars plana region or within vitreous exudates. Silicone oil was not removed in both patients to prevent phthisis bulbi and because there was no potential for visual improvement. The postoperative course in both cases was uneventful. Conclusion: Gunshot injuries can inoculate eyelashes impregnated with infectious microorganisms into the eye. In cases presenting with endophthalmitis associated with a gunshot injury, we recommend meticulous examination of the posterior segment and the pars plana region during vitrectomy to exclude the presence of occult lashes. The Upper Messinian Abu Madi Formation of the Nile Delta constitutes sediments deposited during the final stage of the Messinian salinity crisis (MSC). Several levels of soft‐sediment deformation structures (SSDS) were observed in the transgressive heterolithic fluvial facies deposited adjacent to the deep‐seated faults. The most common deformation features include diapiric structures, intraformational lithoclastic breccia, small‐scale normal faults, slump folds, and liquefied beds. Such association of SSDS typically resembles those described elsewhere as generated by a complex interplay of gravity‐driven and seismically induced liquefaction processes. The pore pressure measurements revealed high pore fluid density ~ 9.1 ppg equivalent density values which reflect a mild pressure disequilibrium in Abu Madi sediments. Pressure disequilibration is observed all over the studied section of the Abu Madi Formation and is not only restricted to the fluvial channel sandstones deposited during rapid loading. Therefore, allogenic seismic activity has been proposed as the main trigger for pressure disequilibrium and the development of SSDS in the Abu Madi Formation. The heterolithic nature of the Abu Madi sediments as well as the scarcity of bioturbation provides the favourable conditions for the preservation of the seismically induced deformation. The lateral variation in thickness suggests deposition of the Abu Madi Formation during periods of active subsidence which promotes the generation of the SSDS. Late MSC tectonism likely controlled the evolution and sedimentary facies variability of the Abu Madi canyon‐infill system, and therefore the distribution of Abu Madi facies varies significantly over very short distances. Abu Madi SSDS follows the spatial distribution observed in other "lago‐mare" deposits (e.g., Foes Formation and SE Spain), characterized by spatial variability and vertical rhythmic alternation between deformed and non‐deformed layers. Purpose. To assess the anatomical and functional outcomes of intravitreal infusion of methotrexate (MTX) during pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) for proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) associated with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD). Methods. Comparative interventional nonrandomized study including consecutive patients who had vitrectomy for RRD. The study included six groups. Groups I (established PVR), II (high risk of PVR), and III (no risk of PVR) comprised prospectively recruited study eyes, which received PPV and adjuvant intravitreal MTX infusion equivalent to 400 μg/0.1 mL. Groups IA, IIA, and IIIA comprised retrospectively recruited control groups. Main outcome measures were retinal reattachment at the end of 6 months, visual outcome, and complications. Chi-square test or Fisher's exact test analyzed categorical variables. ANOVA test and Kruskal–Wallis test analyzed quantitative variables. Mann–Whitney U-test and independent t-test evaluated the difference between each group and its control. Comparison between two paired groups was done by Wilcoxon Rank test. The Kaplan–Meier method was used for survival analysis and the log-rank test estimated differences in event-free survival across the groups. P was significant at <0.05. Results. The study included 190 eyes of 188 patients. Study Groups I, II, and III included 42, 35, and 24 eyes, respectively. Mean age was 45 years. Male gender constituted 70% of patients. Mean follow-up period was 6 months. Control Groups IA, IIA, and IIIA included 30, 30, and 29 eyes, respectively. Mean age was 50 years. Male gender constituted 50%. Mean follow-up period was 7 months. Median rate of retinal reattachment was 82% in the study eyes versus 86% in the control eyes. The difference in the retinal reattachment rates between each study group and its respective control was not statistically significant, Group I-IA p = 0. 2 , Group II-IIA p = 0.07 , and Group III-IIIA p = 0.07 . BCVA improved by a mean of 4 lines in the study eyes versus 3 lines in the control eyes. The difference in visual outcome between each study group and its respective control was statistically significant between Groups II-IIA and III-IIIA, p = 0.03 , but not between Groups I-IA, p = 0.07. We did not detect complications attributed to MTX use in the study eyes. Conclusion. Intravitreal infusion of MTX during PPV is a safe adjuvant therapy in RRD patients with and without PVR. MTX yields superior functional outcomes in patients at high risk of PVR and in patients with no risk of PVR compared to PPV without MTX, but not in cases with established PVR. MTX did not confer an additional advantage in terms of retinal reattachment rate. Summary. Proliferative vitreoretinopathy is a major cause of failure in surgery for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. Methotrexate as an adjuvant therapy blocks essential drivers in the pathogenetic cascade leading to PVR. Purpose: To report the long-term outcome of pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) for management of retained posterior segment intraocular foreign body (IOFB) secondary to gunshot injury. Methods: This is a retrospective interventional case series including consecutive patients who had PPV for retained posterior segment IOFB secondary to gunshot injury. Main outcome measures were final best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), long-term globe survival and detection of complications. Spearman correlation analyzed relationships between numerical data. Kruskal–Wallis test compared differences in initial BCVA and final BCVA across variables. Categorical variables were tested using Chi square or Fisher's exact test. P value is significant at 0.05. Results: The study included 103 eyes of 103 patients. Mean baseline BCVA was 0.01 decimal unit (2 logMAR). Mean duration from primary repair to PPV was 3 weeks. Mean duration of post-operative follow-up was 60 months. Mean final BCVA was 0.04 decimal unit (1.3 logMAR), p 0.001. Post-operatively, BCVA improved in 58.2% of patients. Nineteen patients (18%) gained ≥ 2 lines of vision, and 15 patients (14.5%) achieved final BCVA of 0.4 decimal unit (logMAR 0.4). All complications were related to the original injury. These included macular scar (19%), macular pucker (6%), recurrent retinal detachment (4%), subretinal fibrosis (3%), consecutive optic atrophy (3%), and PVR (3%). Phthisis bulbi or sympathetic ophthalmia did not develop in any case. Conclusion: PPV for removal of IOFB caused by gunshot injury yielded long-term favorable functional outcome with excellent globe survival. Poor initial BCVA, location of IOFB in the posterior pole, associated lens injury and retinal detachment are significant adverse prognostic factors for final BCVA but not for globe survival.
