In this study, a spatiotemporal characterization of forced and unforced flows of a conical swirler is performed based on particle image velocimetry (PIV) and laser Doppler anemometry (LDA). The measurements are performed at a Reynolds number of 33,000 and a swirl number of 0.71. Axisymmetric forcing is applied to approximate the effects of thermoacoustic instabilities on the flow field at the burner inlet and outlet. The actuation frequencies are set at the natural flow frequency (Strouhal number [St.sub.f] [approximately equal to] 0.92) and two higher frequencies ([St.sub.f] [approximately equal to] 1.3 and 1.55) that are not harmonically related to the natural frequency. Phase-averaged measurement are used as a first step to visualize the coherent flow structures. Second, proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is applied to the PIV data to characterize the effect of the actuation on the fluctuating flow. Measurements indicate a typical natural flow instability of helical nature in the unforced case. The associated induced pressure and flow oscillations travel upstream to the swirler inlet where generally fuel is injected. This observation is of critical importance with respect to the stability of the combustion. Harmonic actuation at different frequencies and amplitudes does not affect the mean velocity profile at the outlet, while the coherent velocity fluctuations are strongly influenced at both the inlet and outlet. On one hand, the dominant helical mode is replaced by an axisymmetric vortex ring if the flow is forced at the natural flow frequency. On the other hand, the natural flow frequency prevails at the outlet under forcing at higher frequencies and POD analysis indicates that the helical structure is still present. The presented results give new insight into the flow dynamics of a swirling flow burner under strong forcing. The flexoelectric effect corresponds to the linear variation of the electric polarization of a material subjected to a strain gradient (i.e., during its mechanical bending). Unlike piezoelectricity, it also exists in non-centrosymmetric materials. Furthermore, due to the gradient term, its magnitude can increase as the size of the system decreases. Thanks to this effect, nanoscale systems could be used to harvest thermal vibration energy to power a microdevice. These could be multi-wall carbon nanotubes since they are known to bend easily in an elastic manner. However, it is very challenging to experimentally measure the flexoelectric behavior of a single multi-wall carbon nanotube due to its small size (less than 50 nm in diameter), to the low level of induced charges, and to the need to vary the imposed stress. To progress in this direction, a six-degree-of-freedom robot with a fiber tip is used inside a dual-beam microscope to pick up few single carbon nanotubes from a tangle and connect them to the fiber tip. After ion-soldering the two tips, each carbon nanotube is dynamically bent several times while monitoring the brightness of the bending area and its effective radius of curvature. The first results on the IR emission of ER3+ -doped YbPO4 and (Lu, Yb)PO4 nanoparticles in solution are presented. Findings state that doping can be achieved for 5-nm particles that crystallize in the tetragonal xenotime structure.

Autofocus is an important issue in electron microscopy, particularly at high magnification. It consists in searching for sharp image of a specimen, that is corresponding to the peak of focus. The paper presents a machine learning solution to this issue. From seven focus measures, support vector machines fitting is used to compute the peak with an initial guess obtained from a gradient ascent search, that is search in the direction of higher gradient of focus. The solution is implemented on a Carl Zeiss Auriga FE-SEM with a three benchmark specimen and magnification ranging from x300 to x160 000. Based on regularized nonlinear least squares optimization, the solution overtakes the literature nonregularized search and Fibonacci search methods: accuracy improvement ranges from 1.25 to 8 times, fidelity improvement ranges from 1.6 to 28 times, and speed improvement ranges from 1.5 to 4 times. Moreover, the solution is practical by requiring only an off-line easy automatic train with cross-validation of the support vector machines. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The rail automation domain will, in the near future, face drastic changes. For instance, the use of a standardized electronic representation of signaling planning will become an integral part of the communication of customer requirements. These changes pose challenges for the manufacturers of rail automation systems, who must adapt their engineering tools accordingly. In order to do so, these challenges have been analyzed as part of this paper. The analysis has been used to derive a reference model for the integrated, tool-based engineering of rail automation systems. Further it influences the working process between the different engineering groups and enables potentials e.g. for a fully digital and seamless engineering process. It is applied today at Siemens AG in order to evaluate engineering tools for rail automation as well as to design entire engineering tool landscapes from scratch. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND: The nonoperative treatment of posterior tibial tendon insufficiency (PTTI) can lead to unsatisfactory functional results. Short-term results are available but the impact on the evolution of the deformity is not known. To address these problems, a new brace for the flexible Stage II deformity was developed, and midterm followup was obtained. MATERIALS AND METHOD: In a prospective case series, eighteen patients (mean age 64.2 years; range, 31 to 82; four male, 14 female) with flexible Stage II PTTI were fitted with the new custom-molded foot orthosis. At latest followup of a mean of 61.4 (range, 20 to 87) months, functional results were assessed with the AOFAS ankle hindfoot score and clinical or radiographic progression was recorded. RESULTS: The score improved significantly from a mean of 56 points (range, 20 to 64) to a mean of 82 points (range, 64 to 100, p < 0.001). Three patients (3/18, 16%) had a clinical progression to a fixed deformity (Stage III) and a radiographic increase of their deformity. All the other patients were satisfied with the brace's comfort and noted an improvement in their mobility. Complications were seen in three patients (3/18, 16%), and consisted of the development of calluses. CONCLUSION: The 'shell brace' is a valuable option for nonoperative treatment of the flexible Stage II PTTI. Hindfoot flexibility was conserved throughout the observation period in all but three patients. Functional outcome and patient acceptance was above average. Trapeziectomy for the treatment of trapeziometacarpal arthritis is an in vivo model of an isolated lesion of the scaphotrapeziotrapeziod ligament complex. We analysed the radiological changes in the wrist retrospectively in 86 patients after trapeziectomy. On standardized PA and lateral films the revised carpal height ratio, the radiolunate angle, the scapholunate angle and the ulnar translation were compared pre- and postoperatively. None of these parameters showed a statistically significant change after operation. Grouping the patients into shorter (< 36 months) and longer (> 36 months) follow-ups also failed to show any significant differences. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
