A new species of chigger mites, Morelacarus uazi n. sp., parasitizing lizards of the species Sceloporusgrammicus from Mazapil, Zacatecas, Mexico, is described and illustrated. This new taxon differs from other species of the genus by having a palpal claw with 4 subequal paired prongs, and it can be further distinguished by the combination of the following characters: presence of onychotriches and mastitarsala III, absence of mastitibiala III, subterminala I, and parasubterminala I, and the palpal setal formula B/B/BBb. Additionally, an identification key for the species of the genus Morelacarus is presented. The new species represents the seventh species assigned to the genus and the first species described from a Mexican lizard. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two species of mites belonging to the genus Whartonia Ewing, 1944, family Leeuwenhoekiidae (Womersley, 1944), were obtained from Carollia perspicillata (Linnaeus, 1758) bats from mine tunnels in the municipalities of Sao Jose da Safira and Medina, Brazil: W. (W). pachywhartoni Vercammen-Grandjean, 1966 and W. (W.) nudosetosa Wharton, 1938. A table with all Whartonia (Whartonia) species and their respective morphological characters is presented. For the first time, we report the presence of Hannemania hylae (Ewing) parasitizing the long-footed robber frog Eleutherodactylus longipes (Baird) in a cave environment in Queretaro State, Mexico. A morphological comparison was performed between H. hylae and its closest species Hannemania bufonis Loomis and Welbourn and Hannemania monticola Welbourn and Loomis. The main characters to separate these species are the size of ocular plate, the length of some scutal setae, and the shape and length of some tarsal setae of the legs I and II. We inspected 47 frogs, the prevalence of infestation was 23.4%, mean abundance was 1.8 mites per host, mean intensity 7.9 mites per infested host, and the range intensity was 1-30 mites. Larvae of H. hylae were only collected during the dry season. A brief discussion is provided about the period of larval stage on the host and seasonality is compared with similar studies.
