Aims. In this work we study the striking case of a narrow blue stream with a possible globular cluster-like progenitor around the NGC 7241 galaxy and its foreground dwarf companion. We want to figure out if the stream was generated by tidal interaction with NGC 7241 or if it first interacted with the foreground dwarf companion and later both fell together toward NGC 7241. Methods. We used four sets of observations, including a follow-up spectroscopic study of this stream based on data taken with the MEGARA instrument at the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias using the integral field spectroscopy mode, the Mount Lemmon 0.80 m telescope, the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo, the DESI Imaging Legacy surveys, and GALEX archival data. We also used high-resolution zoomed-in cosmological simulations. Results. Our data suggest that the compact object we detected in the stream is a foreground Milky Way halo star. Near this compact object we detect emission lines overlapping a less compact, bluer, and fainter blob of the stream that is clearly visible in both ultraviolet and optical deep images. From its heliocentric systemic radial velocity derived from the [O III]λ5007 Å lines (Vsyst = 1548.58 ± 1.80 km s−1) and new UV and optical broadband photometry, we conclude that this overdensity could be the actual core of the stream, with an absolute magnitude of Mg ∼ −10 and a g − r = 0.08  ±  0.11, consistent with a remnant of a low-mass dwarf satellite undergoing a current episode of star formation. From the width of the stream and assuming a circular orbit, we calculate that the progenitor mass can be typical of a dwarf galaxy, but it could also be substantially lower if the stream is on a very radial orbit or if it was created by tidal interaction with the companion dwarf instead of with NGC 7241. These estimates also suggest that this is one of the lowest mass streams detected to date beyond the Local Group. Finally, we find that blue stellar streams containing star formation regions are commonly predicted by high-resolution cosmological simulations of galaxies lighter than the Milky Way. This scenario is consistent with the processes explaining the bursty star formation history of some dwarf satellites, which are followed by a gas depletion and a fast quenching once they enter within the virial radius of their host galaxies for the first time. Thus, it is likely that the stream's progenitor is undergoing a star formation burst comparable to those that have shaped the star formation history of several Local Group dwarfs in the last few gigayears. We investigate the origin of stars in the innermost 500 pc of galaxies spanning stellar masses of |$5\times 10^{8-12}\, \mathrm{M}_{\odot }$| at z = 0 using the cosmological magnetohydrodynamical TNG50 simulation. Three different origins of stars comprise galactic centres: (1) in situ (born in the centre), (2) migrated (born elsewhere in the galaxy and ultimately moved to the centre), (3) ex situ (accreted from other galaxies). In situ and migrated stars dominate the central stellar mass budget on average with 73 and 23 per cent, respectively. The ex situ fraction rises above 1 per cent for galaxies |$\gtrsim 10^{11}\, \mathrm{M}_{\odot }$|⁠. Yet, only 9 per cent of all galaxies exhibit no ex situ stars in their centres and the scatter of ex situ mass is significant (⁠|$4\!-\!6\, \mathrm{dex}$|⁠). Migrated stars predominantly originate closely from the centre (⁠|$1\!-\!2\, \mathrm{kpc}$|⁠), but if they travelled together in clumps distances reach |$\sim \! 10\, \mathrm{kpc}$|⁠. Central and satellite galaxies possess similar amounts and origins of central stars. Star-forming galaxies (⁠|$\gtrsim 10^{10}\, \mathrm{M}_{\odot }$|⁠) have on average more ex situ mass in their centres than quenched ones. We predict readily observable stellar population and dynamical properties: (1) migrated stars are distinctly young (⁠|$\sim \! 2\, \mathrm{Gyr}$|⁠) and rotationally supported, especially for Milky Way-mass galaxies, (2) in situ stars are most metal-rich and older than migrated stars, (3) ex situ stars are on random motion dominated orbits and typically the oldest, most metal-poor and α-enhanced population. We demonstrate that the interaction history with other galaxies leads to diverse pathways of building up galaxy centres in a Lambda cold dak matter universe. Our work highlights the necessity for cosmological context in formation scenarios of central galactic components and the potential to use galaxy centres as tracers of overall galaxy assembly. We present a simple model for the host mass dependence of the galaxy nucleation fraction (f nuc), the galaxy's nuclear star cluster (NSC) mass, and the mass in its surviving globular clusters (M GC, obs). Considering the mass and orbital evolution of a GC in a galaxy potential, we define a critical mass limit (M GC, lim) above which a GC can simultaneously in-spiral to the galaxy centre due to dynamical friction and survive tidal dissolution, to build-up the NSC. The analytical expression for this threshold mass allows us to model the nucleation fraction for populations of galaxies. We find that the slope and curvature of the initial galaxy size–mass relation is the most important factor (with the shape of the GC mass function a secondary effect) setting the fraction of galaxies that are nucleated at a given mass. The well-defined skew-normal f nuc– M gal observations in galaxy cluster populations are naturally reproduced in these models, provided there is an inflection in the initial size–mass relation at M gal ∼ 109.5 M⊙. Our analytical model also predicts limits to the M gal– M GC, tot and M gal– M NSC relations which bound the scatter of the observational data. Moreoever, we illustrate how these scaling relations and f nuc vary if the star cluster formation efficiency, GC mass function, galaxy environment, or galaxy size–mass relation are altered. Two key predictions of our model are: (1) galaxies with NSC masses greater than their GC system masses are more compact at fixed stellar mass and (2) the fraction of nucleated galaxies at fixed galaxy mass is higher in denser environments. That a single model framework can reproduce both the NSC and GC scaling relations provides strong evidence that GC in-spiral is an important mechanism for NSC formation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Galaxy mergers are instrumental in dictating the final mass, structure, stellar populations, and kinematics of galaxies. Cosmological galaxy simulations indicate that the most massive galaxies at z = 0 are dominated by high fractions of 'ex-situ' stars, which formed first in distinct independent galaxies, and then subsequently merged into the host galaxy. Using spatially resolved MUSE spectroscopy we quantify and map the ex-situ stars in thirteen massive early-type galaxies. We use full spectral fitting together with semi-analytic galaxy evolution models to isolate the signatures in the galaxies' light which are indicative of ex-situ populations. Using the large MUSE field of view we find that all galaxies display an increase in ex-situ fraction with radius, with massive and more extended galaxies showing a more rapid increase in radial ex-situ fraction (reaching values between ∼30 per cent and 100 per cent at 2 effective radii) compared to less massive and more compact sources (reaching between ∼5 per cent and 40 per cent ex-situ fraction within the same radius). These results are in line with predictions from theory and simulations which suggest ex-situ fractions should increase significantly with radius at fixed mass for the most massive galaxies. We analyse the globular cluster (GC) systems of a sample of 15 massive, compact early-type galaxies (ETGs), 13 of which have already been identified as good relic galaxy candidates on the basis of their compact morphologies, old stellar populations and stellar kinematics. These relic galaxy candidates are likely the nearby counterparts of high-redshift red nugget galaxies. Using F814W (≈ I) and F160W (≈ H) data from the WFC3 camara onboard the Hubble Space Telescope , we determine the total number, luminosity function, specific frequency, colour, and spatial distribution of the GC systems (GCSs). We find lower specific frequencies (SN < 2.5 with a median of SN = 1) than ETGs of comparable mass. This is consistent with a scenario of rapid, early dissipative formation, with relatively low levels of accretion of low-mass, high- SN satellites. The GC half-number radii are compact, but follow the relations found in normal ETGs. We identify an anticorrelation between the specific angular momentum (λ R) of the host galaxy and the (I − H) colour distribution width of their GCSs. Assuming that λ R provides a measure of the degree of dissipation in massive ETGs, we suggest that the (I − H) colour distribution width can be used as a proxy for the degree of complexity of the accretion histories in these systems. We present multitracer dynamical models of the low-mass (M * ∼ 107), isolated dwarf irregular galaxy WLM in order to simultaneously constrain the inner slope of the dark matter (DM) halo density profile (γ) and flattening (q DM), and the stellar orbital anisotropy (β z , β r ). For the first time, we show how jointly constraining the mass distribution from the H  i gas rotation curve and solving the Jeans equations with discrete stellar kinematics lead to a factor of ∼2 reduction in the uncertainties on γ. The mass-anisotropy degeneracy is also partially broken, leading to reductions on uncertainty by |${\sim} 30{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| on M vir (and |${\sim} 70{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| at the half-light radius) and |${\sim} 25{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| on anisotropy. Our inferred value of γ = 0.3 ± 0.1 is robust to the halo geometry, and in excellent agreement with predictions of stellar feedback-driven DM core creation. The derived prolate geometry of the DM halo with q DM = 2 ± 1 is consistent with Lambda cold dark matter simulations of dwarf galaxy haloes. While self-interacting DM (SIDM) models with σ/ m X ∼ 0.6 can reproduce this cored DM profile, the interaction events may sphericalize the halo. The simultaneously cored and prolate DM halo may therefore present a challenge for SIDM. Finally, we find that the radial profile of stellar anisotropy in WLM (β r ) follows a nearly identical trend of increasing tangential anisotropy to the classical dwarf spheroidals, Fornax and Sculptor. Given WLM's orbital history, this result may call into question whether such anisotropy is a consequence of tidal stripping in only one pericentric passage or if it instead is a feature of the largely self-similar formation and evolutionary pathways for some dwarf galaxies. The central regions of disc galaxies hold clues to the processes that dominate their formation and evolution. To exploit this, the TIMER project has obtained high signal-to-noise and spatial resolution integral-field spectroscopy data of the inner few kpc of 21 nearby massive barred galaxies, which allows studies of the stellar kinematics in their central regions with unprecedented spatial resolution. We confirm theoretical predictions of the effects of bars on stellar kinematics and identify box/peanuts through kinematic signatures in mildly and moderately inclined galaxies, finding a lower limit to the fraction of massive barred galaxies with box/peanuts at ∼62%. Further, we provide kinematic evidence of the connection between barlenses, box/peanuts, and bars. We establish the presence of nuclear discs in 19 galaxies and show that their kinematics are characterised by near-circular orbits with low pressure support and that they are fully consistent with the bar-driven secular evolution picture for their formation. In fact, we show that these nuclear discs have, in the region where they dominate, larger rotational support than the underlying main galaxy disc. In addition, we define a kinematic radius for the nuclear discs and show that it relates to bar radius, ellipticity and strength, and bar-to-total ratio. Comparing our results with photometric studies of galaxy bulges, we find that careful, state-of-the-art galaxy image decompositions are generally able to discern nuclear discs from classical bulges if the images employed have high enough physical spatial resolution. In fact, we show that nuclear discs are typically identified in such image decompositions as photometric bulges with (near-)exponential profiles. However, we find that the presence of composite bulges (galaxies hosting both a classical bulge and a nuclear disc) can often be unnoticed in studies based on photometry alone and suggest a more stringent threshold to the Sérsic index to identify galaxies with pure classical bulges. The centres of disc galaxies host a variety of structures built via both internal and external processes. In this study, we constrain the formation and evolution of these central structures, in particular, nuclear rings and nuclear discs, by deriving maps of mean stellar ages, metallicities, and [α/Fe] abundances. We use observations obtained with the MUSE integral-field spectrograph for the TIMER sample of 21 massive barred galaxies. Our results indicate that nuclear discs and nuclear rings are part of the same physical component, with nuclear rings constituting the outer edge of nuclear discs. All nuclear discs in the sample are clearly distinguished based on their stellar population properties. As expected in the picture of bar-driven secular evolution, nuclear discs are younger, more metal-rich, and exhibit lower [α/Fe] enhancements, as compared to their immediate surroundings. Moreover, nuclear discs exhibit well-defined radial gradients, with ages and metallicities decreasing, and [α/Fe] abundances increasing with radius out to the nuclear ring. Often, these gradients show no breaks from the edge of the nuclear disc up through the centre, suggesting that these structures extend to the very centres of galaxies. We argue that continuous (stellar) nuclear discs may form from a series of bar-built (initially gas-rich) nuclear rings that expand in their radius as the bar evolves. In this picture, nuclear rings are simply the (often) star-forming outer edge of nuclear discs. Finally, by combining our results with those taken from a accompanying kinematic study, we do not find evidence for the presence of large, dispersion-dominated components in the centres of these galaxies. This could be a result of quiet merger histories, despite the large galaxy masses, or, perhaps, due to high angular momentum and strong feedback processes preventing the formation of these kinematically hot components. We present population-orbit superposition models for external galaxies based on Schwarzschild's orbit-superposition method, by tagging the orbits with age and metallicity. The models fit the density distributions, kinematic, and age and metallicity maps from integral field unit (IFU) spectroscopy observations. We validate the method and demonstrate its power by applying it to mock data, similar to those obtained by the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) IFU on the Very Large Telescope (VLT). These mock data are created from Auriga galaxy simulations, viewed at three different inclination angles (ϑ = 40°, 60°, 80°). Constrained by MUSE-like mock data, our model can recover the galaxy's stellar orbit distribution projected in orbital circularity λ z versus radius r , the intrinsic stellar population distribution in age t versus metallicity Z , and the correlation between orbits' circularity λ z and stellar age t. A physically motivated age–metallicity relation improves the recovering of intrinsic stellar population distributions. We decompose galaxies into cold, warm, and hot+counter-rotating components based on their orbit circularity distribution, and find that the surface density, velocity, velocity dispersion, and age and metallicity maps of each component from our models well reproduce those from simulation, especially for projections close to edge-on. These galaxies exhibit strong global age versus σ z relation, which is well recovered by our model. The method has the power to reveal the detailed build-up of stellar structures in galaxies, and offers a complement to local resolved, and high-redshift studies of galaxy evolution. The five globular clusters (GCs) of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy are puzzling for two reasons; the mass in GCs is high with respect to the galaxy's old stellar mass and their survival and large distance (>1 kpc) is at odds with naive expectations of dynamical friction. We present here a semi-analytic model, simultaneously addressing both problems in a comprehensive evolutionary framework for Fornax. Key to the model is inclusion of: (1) hydrodynamical constraints on the GC formation locations, (2) self-consistent velocity distribution functions in the dynamical friction calculations, and (3) expansion of GC orbits due to a past dwarf–dwarf merger in the orbit integrations. The latter is crucial for reconciling the dynamical survival of the clusters and their chemical properties with respect to the Fornax field stars. We find that in order for four of the GCs to survive at their observed projected location, a dark matter core of size r c > 1.5 kpc and a dwarf merger with dynamical mass ratio of 1:5 ≤ η ≤ 1:2 with Fornax is required. We support the merger scenario by showing that aspects of the field star metallicity distribution function and anomalous chemical properties of GC5, are representative of a merging galaxy which is ∼1/3 less massive than Fornax. Together the chemical and dynamical models suggest a scenario where three in situ GCs in proto-Fornax were ejected to the outskirts during the merger, a GC4 formed during the merger at about 10 Gyr ago, with GC5 being brought in by the merging galaxy to Fornax. Recent photometric observations revealed a massive, extended (M GC ≳ 105 M⊙; R h ∼ 14 pc) globular cluster (GC) in the central region (D 3D ≲ 100 pc) of the low-mass (M * ∼ 5 × 106 M⊙) dwarf irregular galaxy Pegasus. This massive GC offers a unique opportunity to study star cluster inspiral as a mechanism for building up nuclear star clusters, and the dark matter (DM) density profile of the host galaxy. Here, we present spectroscopic observations indicating that the GC has a systemic velocity of Δ V  = 3 ± 8 km s−1 relative to the host galaxy, and an old, metal-poor stellar population. We run a suite of orbital evolution models for a variety of host potentials (cored to cusped) and find that the GC's observed tidal radius (which is ∼3 times larger than the local Jacobi radius), relaxation time, and relative velocity are consistent with it surviving inspiral from a distance of D gal ≳ 700 pc (up to the maximum tested value of D gal = 2000 pc). In successful trials, the GC arrives to the galaxy centre only within the last ∼1.4 ± 1 Gyr. Orbits that arrive in the centre and survive are possible in DM haloes of nearly all shapes, however to satisfy the GC's structural constraints a galaxy DM halo with mass M DM ≃ 6 ± 2 × 109 M⊙, concentration c ≃ 13.7 ± 0.6, and an inner slope to the DM density profile of −0.9 ≤ γ ≤ −0.5 is preferred. The gas densities necessary for its creation and survival suggest the GC could have formed initially near the dwarf's centre, but then was quickly relocated to the outskirts where the weaker tidal field permitted an increased size and relaxation time – with the latter preserving the former during subsequent orbital decay. We present a new method of quantifying a galaxy's accretion history from its integrated spectrum alone. Using full spectral fitting and calibrated regularization techniques, we show how we can accurately derive a galaxy's mass distribution in age–metallicity space and further separate this into stellar populations from different chemical enrichment histories. By exploiting the fact that accreted lower mass galaxies will exhibit an offset to lower metallicities at fixed age compared to the in situ stellar population, we quantify the fraction of light that comes from past merger events that are long since mixed in phase space and otherwise indistinguishable. Empirical age–metallicity relations parametrized for different galaxy masses are used to identify the accreted stellar populations and link them back to the progenitor galaxy's stellar mass. This allows us to not only measure the host galaxy's total ex situ mass fraction (f acc), but also quantify the relative amount of accreted material deposited by satellite galaxies of different masses, i.e. the accreted satellite mass function in analogy to the subhalo mass function. Using mock spectra of present-day, early-type galaxies with total stellar mass ∼109−1012 M⊙ from the EAGLE simulation suite, we demonstrate that our method can recover the total accreted fraction to within |${\approx} 38 {{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠ , the stellar mass of the most massive accreted subhalo to within |${\approx} 56 {{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠ , and the slope of the accreted satellite mass function to within |${\approx} 17 {{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of the true values from the EAGLE merger trees. Future application of this method to observations could potentially provide us accretion histories of hundreds of individual galaxies, for which deep integrated light spectroscopy is available. We present the star formation history (SFH) of the isolated (D ∼ 970 kpc) Local Group dwarf galaxy Wolf–Lundmark–Melotte (WLM) measured from colour–magnitude diagrams (CMDs) constructed from deep Hubble Space Telescope imaging. Our observations include a central (⁠|$0.5 \, r_h$|⁠) and outer field (⁠|$0.7 \, r_h$|⁠) that reach below the oldest main-sequence turn-off. WLM has no early dominant episode of star formation: 20 per cent of its stellar mass formed by ∼12.5 Gyr ago (⁠|$z$| ∼ 5). It also has an SFR that rises to the present with 50 per cent of the stellar mass within the most recent 5 Gyr (⁠|$z$| < 0.7). There is evidence of a strong age gradient: the mean age of the outer field is 5 Gyr older than the inner field despite being only 0.4 kpc apart. Some models suggest such steep gradients are associated with strong stellar feedback and dark-matter core creation. The SFHs of real isolated dwarf galaxies and those from the Feedback in Realistic Environment suite are in good agreement for M ⋆(⁠|$z$| = 0) ∼ 107–109M⊙, but in worse agreement at lower masses (⁠|$M_{\star }(z=0) \sim 10^5\!-\!10^7 \, \mathrm{M}_{\odot }$|⁠). These differences may be explainable by systematics in the models (e.g. reionization model) and/or observations (HST field placement). We suggest that a coordinated effort to get deep CMDs between HST / JWST (crowded central fields) and WFIRST (wide-area halo coverage) is the optimal path for measuring global SFHs of isolated dwarf galaxies. The discovery around the turn of the millennium of a population of very massive (M ⋆ > 2 × 106 M⊙) compact stellar systems (CSS) with physical properties (radius, velocity dispersion, stellar mass etc.) that are intermediate between those of the classical globular cluster (GC) population and galaxies led to questions about their exact nature. Recently a consensus has emerged that these objects, usually called ultracompact dwarfs (UCDs), are a mass-dependent mixture of high-mass star clusters and remnant nuclei of tidally disrupted galaxies. The existence of genuine star clusters with stellar masses >107 M⊙ naturally leads to questions about the upper mass limit of the star cluster formation process. In this work we compile a comprehensive catalogue of CSS, and reinforce the evidence that the true ancient star cluster population has a maximum mass of M ⋆ ∼ 5 × 107 M⊙, corresponding to a stellar mass at birth of close to 108 M⊙. Stellar feedback plays a significant role in modulating star formation, redistributing metals, and shaping the baryonic and dark structure of galaxies – however, the efficiency of its energy deposition to the interstellar medium is challenging to constrain observationally. Here we leverage HST and ALMA imaging of a molecular gas and dust shell (⁠|$M_{\mathrm{ H}_2} \sim 2\times 10^{5}\, {\rm M}_{\odot }$|⁠) in an outflow from the nuclear star-forming ring of the galaxy NGC 3351, to serve as a boundary condition for a dynamical and energetic analysis of the outflowing ionized gas seen in our MUSE TIMER survey. We use starburst 99 models and prescriptions for feedback from simulations to demonstrate that the observed star formation energetics can reproduce the ionized and molecular gas dynamics – provided a dominant component of the momentum injection comes from direct photon pressure from young stars, on top of supernovae, photoionization heating, and stellar winds. The mechanical energy budget from these sources is comparable to low luminosity active galactic neuclei, suggesting that stellar feedback can be a relevant driver of bulk gas motions in galaxy centres – although here ≲10−3 of the ionized gas mass is escaping the galaxy. We test several scenarios for the survival/formation of the cold gas in the outflow, including in situ condensation and cooling. Interestingly, the geometry of the molecular gas shell, observed magnetic field strengths and emission line diagnostics are consistent with a scenario where magnetic field lines aided survival of the dusty ISM as it was initially launched (with mass-loading factor ≲1) from the ring by stellar feedback. This system's unique feedback-driven morphology can hopefully serve as a useful litmus test for feedback prescriptions in magnetohydrodynamical galaxy simulations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report the confirmation of an old, metal-poor globular cluster (GC) in the nearby dwarf irregular galaxy Sextans A, the first GC known in this galaxy. The cluster, which we designate as Sextans A-GC1, lies some 4.4 arcmin (∼1.8 kpc) to the SW of the galaxy centre and clearly resolves into stars in sub-arcsecond seeing ground-based imaging. We measure an integrated magnitude V  = 18.04, corresponding to an absolute magnitude, M V ,0 = −7.85. This gives an inferred mass M ∼ 1.6 × 105 M⊙, assuming a Kroupa IMF. An integrated spectrum of Sextans A-GC1 reveals a heliocentric radial velocity v helio = 305 ± 15 km s−1, consistent with the systemic velocity of Sextans A. The location of candidate red giant branch stars in the cluster, and stellar population analyses of the cluster's integrated optical spectrum, suggests a metallicity [Fe/H] ∼ −2.4, and an age ∼9 Gyr. We measure a half-light radius, Rh  = 7.6 ± 0.2 pc. Normalizing to the galaxy integrated magnitude, we obtain a V -band specific frequency, SN  = 2.1. We compile a sample of 1928 GCs in 28 galaxies with spectroscopic metallicities and find that the low metallicity of Sextans A-GC1 is close to a 'metallicity floor' at [Fe/H] ∼ −2.5 seen in these GC systems that include the Milky Way, M31, M87, and the Large Magellanic Cloud. This metallicity floor appears to hold across 6 dex in host galaxy stellar mass and is seen in galaxies with and without accreted GC subpopulations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The formation of two stellar bars within a galaxy has proved challenging for numerical studies. It is not yet clear whether the inner bar is born via a star formation process promoted by gas inflow along the outer bar or whether it is dynamically assembled from instabilities in a small-scale stellar disc. Observational constraints to these scenarios are scarce. We present a thorough study of the stellar content of two double-barred galaxies observed by the MUSE TIMER project, NGC 1291 and NGC 5850, combined with a two-dimensional multicomponent photometric decomposition performed on the 3.6  |$\mu$| m images from S4G. Our analysis confirms the presence of σ-hollows appearing in the stellar velocity dispersion distribution at the ends of the inner bars. Both galaxies host inner discs matching in size with the inner bars, suggestive of a dynamical formation for the inner bars from small-scale discs. The analysis of the star formation histories for the structural components shaping the galaxies provides constraints on the epoch of dynamical assembly of the inner bars, which took place >6.5 Gyr ago for NGC 1291 and >4.5 Gyr ago for NGC 5850. It is generally recognized that massive galaxies form through a combination of in-situ collapse and ex-situ accretion. The in-situ component forms early, where gas collapse and compaction leads to the formation of massive compact systems (blue and red "nuggets") seen at z > 1. The subsequent accretion of satellites brings in ex-situ material, growing these nuggets in size and mass to appear as the massive early-type galaxies (ETGs) we see locally. Due to stochasticity in the accretion process, in a few rare cases a red nugget will evolve to the present day having undergone little ex-situ mass accretion. The resulting massive, compact and ancient objects have been termed "relic galaxies". Detailed stellar population and kinematic analyses are required to characterise these systems. However, an additional crucial aspect lies in determining the fraction of ex-situ mass they have accreted since their formation. Globular cluster systems can be used to constrain this fraction, since the oldest and most metal-poor globular clusters in massive galaxies are primarily an accreted, ex-situ population. Models for the formation of relic galaxies and their globular cluster systems suggest that, due to their early compaction and limited accretion of dark-matter dominated satellites, relic galaxies should have characteristically low dark-matter mass fractions compared to ETGs of the same stellar mass. We analyse radial stellar metallicity and kinematic profiles out to 1 R e in 244 CALIFA galaxies ranging from morphological type E to Sd, to study the evolutionary mechanisms of stellar population gradients. We find that linear metallicity gradients exhibit a clear correlation with galaxy morphological type – with early-type galaxies showing the steepest gradients. We show that the metallicity gradients simply reflect the local mass–metallicity relation within a galaxy. This suggests that the radial stellar population distribution within a galaxy's effective radius is primarily a result of the in situ local star formation history. In this simple picture, the dynamically derived stellar surface mass density gradient directly predicts the metallicity gradient of a galaxy. We show that this correlation and its scatter can be reproduced entirely by using independent empirical galaxy structural and chemical scaling relations. Using Schwarzschild dynamical models, we also explore the link between a galaxy's local stellar populations and their orbital structures. We find that galaxies' angular momentum and metallicity gradients show no obvious causal link. This suggests that metallicity gradients in the inner disc are not strongly shaped by radial migration, which is confirmed by the lack of correlation between the metallicity gradients and observable probes of radial migration in the galaxies, such as bars and spiral arms. Finally, we find that galaxies with positive metallicity gradients become increasingly common towards low mass and late morphological types – consistent with stellar feedback more efficiently modifying the baryon cycle in the central regions of these galaxies. The Time Inference with MUSE in Extragalactic Rings (TIMER) project is a survey with the VLT–MUSE integral-field spectrograph of 24 nearby barred galaxies with prominent central structures (e.g. nuclear rings or inner discs). The main goals of the project are: (i) estimating the cosmic epoch when discs of galaxies settle, leading to the formation of bars; (ii) testing the hypothesis whereby discs in more massive galaxies are assembled first; and (iii) characterizing the history of external gas accretion in disc galaxies. We present details on the sample selection, observations, data reduction, and derivation of high-level data products, including stellar kinematics, ages, and metallicities. We also derive star formation histories and physical properties and kinematics of ionized gas. We illustrate how this data set can be used for a plethora of scientific applications, e.g. stellar feedback, outflows, nuclear and primary bars, stellar migration and chemical enrichment, and the gaseous and stellar dynamics of nuclear spiral arms, barlenses, box/peanuts, and bulges. Amongst our first results – based on a few selected galaxies – we show that the dynamics of nuclear rings and inner discs is consistent with the picture in which they are formed by bars, that the central few hundred parsecs in massive disc galaxies tend to show a pronounced peak in stellar metallicity, and that nuclear rings can efficiently prevent star formation in this region. Finally, we present evidence that starbursting nuclear rings can be fed with low-metallicity gas from low-mass companions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

According to star formation histories (SFHs), Local Group dwarf galaxies can be broadly classified in two types: those forming most of their stars before $z$ = 2 (fast) and those with more extended SFHs (slow). The most precise SFHs are usually derived from deep but not very spatially extended photometric data; this might alter the ratio of old to young stars when age gradients are present. Here, we correct for this effect and derive the mass formed in stars by $z$ = 2 for a sample of 16 Local Group dwarf galaxies. We explore early differences between fast and slow dwarfs, and evaluate the impact of internal feedback by supernovae (SNe) on the baryonic and dark matter (DM) component of the dwarfs. Fast dwarfs assembled more stellar mass at early times and have larger amounts of DM within the half-light radius than slow dwarfs. By imposing that slow dwarfs cannot have lost their gas by $z$ = 2, we constrain the maximum coupling efficiency of SN feedback to the gas and to the DM to be ∼10 per cent. We find that internal feedback alone appears insufficient to quench the SFH of fast dwarfs by gas deprivation, in particular for the fainter systems. Nonetheless, SN feedback can core the DM halo density profiles relatively easily, producing cores of the sizes of the half-light radius in fast dwarfs by $z$ = 2 with very low efficiencies. Amongst the ‘classical’ Milky Way satellites, we predict that the smallest cores should be found in Draco and Ursa Minor, while Sculptor and Fornax should host the largest ones. Deriving circular velocities of galaxies from stellar kinematics can provide an estimate of their total dynamical mass, provided a contribution from the velocity dispersion of the stars is taken into account. Molecular gas (e.g. CO), on the other hand, is a dynamically cold tracer and hence acts as an independent circular velocity estimate without needing such a correction. In this paper, we test the underlying assumptions of three commonly used dynamical models, deriving circular velocities from stellar kinematics of 54 galaxies (S0-Sd) that have observations of both stellar kinematics from the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) survey, and CO kinematics from the Extragalactic Database for Galaxy Evolution (EDGE) survey. We test the asymmetric drift correction (ADC) method, as well as Jeans, and Schwarzschild models. The three methods each reproduce the CO circular velocity at 1Re to within 10 per cent. All three methods show larger scatter (up to 20 per cent) in the inner regions (R < 0.4Re) that may be due to an increasingly spherical mass distribution (which is not captured by the thin disc assumption in ADC), or non-constant stellar M/L ratios (for both the JAM and Schwarzschild models). This homogeneous analysis of stellar and gaseous kinematics validates that all three models can recover Mdyn at 1Re to better than 20 per cent, but users should be mindful of scatter in the inner regions where some assumptions may break down. Massive galaxies are thought to form in two phases: an initial collapse of gas and giant burst of central star formation, followed by the later accretion of material that builds up their stellar and dark-matter haloes. The systems of globular clusters within such galaxies are believed to form in a similar manner. The initial central burst forms metal-rich (spectrally red) clusters, whereas more metal-poor (spectrally blue) clusters are brought in by the later accretion of less-massive satellites. This formation process is thought to result in the multimodal optical colour distributions that are seen in the globular cluster systems of massive galaxies. Here we report optical observations of the massive relic-galaxy candidate NGC 1277-a nearby, un-evolved example of a high-redshift 'red nugget' galaxy. We find that the optical colour distribution of the cluster system of NGC 1277 is unimodal and entirely red. This finding is in strong contrast to other galaxies of similar and larger stellar mass, the cluster systems of which always exhibit (and are generally dominated by) blue clusters. We argue that the colour distribution of the cluster system of NGC 1277 indicates that the galaxy has undergone little (if any) mass accretion after its initial collapse, and use simulations of possible merger histories to show that the stellar mass due to accretion is probably at most ten per cent of the total stellar mass of the galaxy. These results confirm that NGC 1277 is a genuine relic galaxy and demonstrate that blue clusters constitute an accreted population in present-day massive galaxies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We analyse age-velocity dispersion relations (AVRs) from kinematics of individual stars in eight Local Group galaxies ranging in mass from Carina (M* ∼ 106M☉) to M31 (M* ∼ 1011M*☉). Observationally the σ versus stellar age trends can be interpreted as dynamical heating of the stars by giant molecular clouds, bars/spiral arms or merging subhaloes; alternatively the stars could have simply been born out of a more turbulent interstellar medium (ISM) at high redshift and retain that larger velocity dispersion till present day - consistent with recent integral field unit kinematic studies. To ascertain the dominant mechanism and better understand the impact of instabilities and feedback, we develop models based on observed star formation histories (SFHs) of these Local Group galaxies in order to create an evolutionary formalism that describes the ISM velocity dispersion due to a galaxy's evolving gas fraction. These empirical models relax the common assumption that the stars are born from gas that has constant velocity dispersion at all redshifts. Using only the observed SFHs as input, the ISM velocity dispersion and a mid-plane scattering model fits the observed AVRs of low-mass galaxies without fine tuning. Higher mass galaxies above Mvir ≳ 1011M*☉ need a larger contribution from latent dynamical heating processes (for example minor mergers), in excess of the ISM model. Using the SFHs, we also find that supernovae feedback does not appear to be a dominant driver of the gas velocity dispersion compared to gravitational instabilities - at least for dispersions σ ≳B 25 km s-1. Together our results point to stars being born with a velocity dispersion close to that of the gas at the time of their formation, with latent dynamical heating operating with a galaxy mass-dependent efficiency. We present a detailed study of the shape of the innermost part of the rotation curves of a sample of 29 nearby spiral galaxies, based on high angular and spectral resolution kinematic Hα Fabry-Perot observations. In particular, we quantify the steepness of the rotation curve by measuring its slope dRvc(0). We explore the relationship between the inner slope and several galaxy parameters, such as stellar mass, maximum rotational velocity, central surface brightness (μ0), bar strength and bulge-to-total ratio. Even with our limited dynamical range, we find a trend for low-mass galaxies to exhibit shallower rotation curve inner slopes than high-mass galaxies, whereas steep inner slopes are found exclusively in high-mass galaxies. This trend may arise from the relationship between the total stellar mass and the mass of the bulge, which are correlated among them. We find a correlation between the inner slope of the rotation curve and the morphological T-type, complementary to the scaling relation between dRvc(0) and μ0 previously reported in the literature. Although we find that the inner slope increases with the Fourier amplitude A2 and decreases with the bar torque Qb, this may arise from the presence of the bulge implicit in both A2 and Qb. As previously noted in the literature, the more compact the mass in the central parts of a galaxy (more concretely, the presence of a bulge), the steeper the inner slopes. We present a kinematical study of 29 spiral galaxies included in the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies, using Hα Fabry-Perot (FP) data obtained with the Galaxy Hα Fabry- Perot System instrument at the William Herschel Telescope in La Palma, complemented with images in the R band and in Hα. The primary goal is to study the evolution and properties of the main structural components of galaxies through the kinematical analysis of the FP data, complemented with studies of morphology, star formation and mass distribution. In this paper we describe how the FP data have been obtained, processed and analysed. We present the resulting moment maps, rotation curves, velocity model maps and residual maps. Images are available in FITS format through the NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database and the Centre de DonnÂ'ees Stellaires. With these data products we study the non-circular motions, in particular those found along the bars and spiral arms. The data indicate that the amplitude of the non-circular motions created by the bar does not correlate with the bar strength indicators. The amplitude of those non-circular motions in the spiral arms does not correlate with either arm class or star formation rate along the spiral arms. This implies that the presence and the magnitude of the streaming motions in the arms is a local phenomenon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using multiwavelength kinematic and photometric data we have analysed the gaseous and stellar properties of a previously uncharacterized low-mass star-forming companion and newly discovered stellar stream seen projected against the edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 7241. The companion object was identified serendipitously as an offset velocity component in H a Fabry-Perot observations along the line of sight to NGC 7241, and is most prominent visually in UV and blue wavelengths. Its occulting position with respect to NGC 7241 allows measurement of its dust extinction properties which are then combined with photometric spectral energy distribution fitting and long-slit spectroscopy to study star formation (SF) in this gas-rich accreting dwarf galaxy. The dynamical properties of the stream and companion suggest that they may likely be remnants of the same low-mass progenitor dwarf galaxy which is being disrupted during its accretion on to NGC 7241 - with the companion's recent SF triggered during its passage with the disc of NGC 7241. This is supported by the companion's metallicity and SF rates, the asymmetric SF in the disc of NGC 7241, as well as the coincident velocity of the extraplanar Hi filament and the star-forming companion. In contrast, mass estimates from dynamical modelling of NGC 7241 rule out an interaction between NGC 7241 and UGC 11964 (the other large spiral galaxy in the group) within the last ~3 Gyr - making such an interaction a poor candidate for inducing the recent SF in the system. Together, the data for this system offer a window into how SF proceeds in low-mass mergers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present different chemical evolution models for the ultrafaint dwarf galaxy Boötes I. We either assume that the galaxy accretes its mass through smooth infall of gas of primordial chemical composition (classical models) or adopt mass accretion histories derived from the combination of merger trees with semi-analytical modelling (cosmologically-motivated models). Furthermore, we consider models with and without taking into account inhomogeneous mixing in the interstellar medium within the galaxy, i.e. homogeneous versus inhomogeneous models. The theoretical predictions are then compared to each other and to the body of the available data. From this analysis, we confirm previous findings that Boötes I has formed stars with very low efficiency but, at variance with previous studies, we do not find a clear-cut indication that supernova explosions have sustained long-lasting galactic-scale outflows in this galaxy. Therefore, we suggest that external mechanisms such as ram pressure stripping and tidal stripping are needed to explain the absence of neutral gas in Boötes I today. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the hierarchical formation scenario in which the outer halo of the Milky Way is the result of the continuous accretion of low-mass galaxies, a fraction of the Galactic globular cluster system might have originated in and been accreted with already extinct dwarf galaxies. In this context, we expect that the remnants of these progenitor galaxies might be still populating the surroundings of those accreted globulars. In this work, we present wide-field photometry of a sample of 23 globular clusters in the Galactocentric distance range 10 ≤ RG ≤ 40 kpc, which we use to search for remnants of their hypothetical progenitor systems. Our deep photometry reveals the presence of underlying stellar populations along the line of sight of about half of the globulars included in our sample. Among the detections lying in the footprint of the Sagittarius tidal stream, which we identify via the comparison with its orbit derived from numerical simulations, only Whiting 1 and NGC 7492 seem to be immersed in that remnant at a compatible heliocentric distance. We also confirm the existence of a subjacent main-sequence feature in the surroundings of NGC 1851. A tentative detection of the vast Hercules–Aquila cloud is unveiled in the background of NGC 7006. Context. The Spitzer Survey for Stellar Structure in Galaxies (S4G) and its more recently approved extension will lead to a set of 3.6 and 4.5 μm images for 2829 galaxies, which can be used to study many different aspects of the structure and evolution of local galaxies. Aims. We have collected and re-reduced optical images of 1768 of the survey galaxies, aiming to make these available to the community as ready-to-use FITS files to be used in conjunction with the mid-IR images. Our sky-subtraction and mosaicking procedures were optimised for imaging large galaxies. We also produce false-colour images of some of these galaxies to be used for illustrative and public outreach purposes. Methods. We collected and re-processed images in five bands from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey for 1657 galaxies, which are publicly released with the publication of this paper. We observed, in only the g-band, an additional 111 S4G galaxies in the northern hemisphere with the 2.5m Liverpool Telescope, so that optical imaging is released for 1768 galaxies, or for 62% of the S4G sample. We visually checked all images.We noted interactions and close companions in our optical data set and in the S4G sample, confirming them by determining the galaxies' radial velocities and magnitudes in the NASA-IPAC Extragalactic Database. Results. We find that 17% of the S4G galaxies (21% of those brighter than 13.5mag) have a close companion (within a radius of five times the diameter of the sample galaxy, a recession velocity within ±200 km s-1 and not more than 3 mag fainter) and that around 5% of the bright part of the S4G sample show significant morphological evidence of an ongoing interaction. This confirms and further supports previous estimates of these fractions. Conclusions. The over 8000 science images described in this paper, the re-processed Sloan Digital Sky Survey ones, the new Liverpool Telescope images, the set of 29 false-colour pictures, and the catalogue of companion and interacting galaxies, are all publicly released for general use for scientific, illustrative, or public outreach purposes.
