Abstract

WEAVE, the new wide-field, massively multiplexed spectroscopic survey facility for the William Herschel Telescope, will see first light in late 2022. WEAVE comprises a new 2-degree field-of-view prime-focus corrector system, a nearly 1000-multiplex fibre positioner, 20 individually deployable 'mini' integral field units (IFUs), and a single large IFU. These fibre systems feed a dual-beam spectrograph covering the wavelength range 366$-$959\,nm at $R\sim5000$, or two shorter ranges at $R\sim20\,000$. After summarising the design and implementation of WEAVE and its data systems, we present the organisation, science drivers and design of a five- to seven-year programme of eight individual surveys to: (i) study our Galaxy's origins by completing Gaia's phase-space information, providing metallicities to its limiting magnitude for $\sim$3 million stars and detailed abundances for $\sim1.5$ million brighter field and open-cluster stars; (ii) survey $\sim0.4$ million Galactic-plane OBA stars, young stellar objects and nearby gas to understand the evolution of young stars and their environments; (iii) perform an extensive spectral survey of white dwarfs; (iv) survey $\sim400$ neutral-hydrogen-selected galaxies with the IFUs; (v) study properties and kinematics of stellar populations and ionised gas in $z<0.5$ cluster galaxies; (vi) survey stellar populations and kinematics in $\sim25\,000$ field galaxies at $0.3\lesssim z \lesssim 0.7$; (vii) study the cosmic evolution of accretion and star formation using $>1$ million spectra of LOFAR-selected radio sources; (viii) trace structures using intergalactic/circumgalactic gas at $z>2$. 10. An extremely metal-deficient globular cluster in the Andromeda Galaxy

Abstract

Globular clusters (GCs) are dense, gravitationally bound systems of thousands to millions of stars. They are preferentially associated with the oldest components of galaxies, and measurements of their composition can therefore provide insight into the build-up of the chemical elements in galaxies in the early Universe. We report a massive GC in the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) that is extremely depleted in heavy elements. Its iron abundance is about 800 times lower than that of the Sun, and about three times lower than in the most iron-poor GCs previously known. It is also strongly depleted in magnesium. These measurements challenge the notion of a metallicity floor for GCs and theoretical expectations that massive GCs could not have formed at such low metallicities., Comment: Accepted for publication in Science. Abstract

We prove uniqueness of representations of Nica-Toeplitz algebras associated to product systems of $C^*$-correspondences over right LCM semigroups by applying our previous abstract uniqueness results developed for $C^*$-precategories. Our results provide an interpretation of conditions identified in work of Fowler and Fowler-Raeburn, and apply also to their crossed product twisted by a product system, in the new context of right LCM semigroups, as well as to a new, Doplicher-Roberts type $C^*$-algebra associated to the Nica-Toeplitz algebra. As a derived construction we develop Nica-Toeplitz crossed products by actions with completely positive maps. This provides a unified framework for Nica-Toeplitz semigroup crossed products by endomorphisms and by transfer operators. Abstract

The relative graph $C^*$-algebras introduced by Muhly and Tomforde are generalizations of both graph algebras and their Toeplitz extensions. For an arbitrary graph $E$ and a subset $R$ of the set of regular vertices of $E$ we show that the relative graph $C^*$-algebra $C^*(E, R)$ is isomorphic to a partial crossed product for an action of the free group generated by the edge set on the relative boundary path space. Given a time evolution on $C^*(E, R)$ induced by a function on the edge set, we characterize the KMS$_\beta$ states and ground states using an abstract result of Exel and Laca. Guided by their work on KMS states for Toeplitz-Cuntz-Krieger type algebras associated to infinite matrices, we obtain complete descriptions of the convex sets of KMS states of finite type and of KMS states of infinite type whose associated measures are supported on recurrent infinite paths. This allows us to give a complete concrete description of the convex set of all KMS states for a big class of graphs which includes all finite graphs., Comment: 33 pages. A few typos corrected. 29. Caregiver Burden Varies by Sensory Subtypes and Sensory Dimension Scores of Children with Autism

Abstract

Understanding characteristics associated with burden in caregivers of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is critical due to negative health consequences. We explored the association between child sensory subtype, sensory dimension scores, and caregiver burden. A national survey of caregivers of children with ASD aged 5-13 years was conducted (n = 367). The relationship between variables of interest and indicators of caregiver burden, including health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and caregiver strain, was examined with canonical correlation analyses. Caregiver strain was, but caregiver HRQOL was not, significantly associated with child sensory subtype and sensory dimension scores. Caregiver age, child age, and household income were also associated with caregiver strain. Potential explanatory mechanisms for these findings, derived from published qualitative studies, are discussed.

34. Detailed abundance analysis from integrated high-dispersion spectroscopy: Globular clusters in the Fornax Dwarf Spheroidal

Abstract

Aims: We describe our newly developed approach to detailed abundance analysis from integrated-light high-dispersion spectra of star clusters. As a pilot project, we measure abundances of several elements for three globular clusters (GCs) in the Fornax dSph, using VLT/UVES spectra. Methods: We divide the cluster colour-magnitude diagrams into about 100 bins and compute synthetic spectra for each bin. The individual model spectra are co-added and the abundances are iteratively adjusted until the best match to the observed spectra is achieved. Results: We find [Fe/H] = -2.3, -1.4 and -2.1 for Fornax 3, 4 and 5, with +/-0.1 dex uncertainties. Fornax 3 and 5 are thus similar in metallicity to the most metal-poor Milky Way GCs and fall near the extreme metal-poor end of the field star metallicity distribution in Fornax. The [alpha/Fe] ratios, as traced by Ca and Ti, are enhanced with respect to the Solar composition at the level of about +0.25 dex for Fornax 3 and 5, and possibly slightly less (about +0.12 dex) for Fornax 4. For all three clusters the [Mg/Fe] ratio is significantly less elevated than [Ca/Fe] and [Ti/Fe], possibly an effect of the abundance anomalies that are well-known in Galactic GCs. We thus confirm that Mg may be a poor proxy for the overall alpha-element abundances for GCs. The abundance patterns of heavy elements (Y, Ba and Eu) indicate a dominant contribution to nucleosynthesis from the r-process in all three clusters, with a mean [Ba/Eu]=-0.7, suggesting rapid formation of the GCs. Conclusions: Combining our results with literature data for Fornax 1 and 2, four of the five Fornax GCs fall in the range -2.5<[Fe/H]<-2, while Fornax 4 is substantially more metal-rich than the others. The indications that abundance anomalies are detectable in integrated light are encouraging, particularly for the prospects of detecting such anomalies in young, massive star clusters., Comment: 18 pages, accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract

Let X be a product system over a quasi-lattice ordered group. Under mild hypotheses, we associate to X a C*-algebra which is co-universal for injective Nica covariant Toeplitz representations of X which preserve the gauge coaction. Under appropriate amenability criteria, this co-universal C*-algebra coincides with the Cuntz-Nica-Pimsner algebra introduced by Sims and Yeend. We prove two key uniqueness theorems, and indicate how to use our theorems to realise a number of reduced crossed products as instances of our co-universal algebras. Abstract

Prediction or estimation of the delay of a train is essential to analyze customer behavior. In case of longer delays, there is a high probability that the customer will abort their travel or change the mode/time of travel. The delay propagation from previous stations to the next station creates a chain of these types of customer reactions. Thus, using delays at the previous station to predict the next station's delay is a good approach to align with customer behavior. The present research attempts to predict the delays at a station using the delays at previous stations. The previous delays at stations are generated by creating lags in the original delays and creating them as one of the prediction features. The present research uses the delay data acquired from Bane NOR from 1 January 2021 to 28 February 2023. This data contains the scheduled and actual departure and arrival times of different trains between Oslo and Trondheim (up and down the line) in the specified period. The machine learning models based on neural networks were used on the data in the present research. Different prediction algorithms, i.e., recurrent neural network (RNN), gated recurrent unit (GRU), and long short-term memory (LSTM), were used. The prediction results are compared to look at the insights of the train delays in the given period. Abstract

Open educational resources (OERs) provide a potential alternative to costly textbooks and can allow content to be edited and adapted to a variety of classroom environments. At the University of California, Davis, the OER "ChemWiki" project, as part of the greater STEMWiki Hyperlibrary, was developed to supplant traditional post-secondary chemistry textbooks. The effectiveness of using this OER was assessed by comparing two general chemistry classes, one using ChemWiki and one using a traditional textbook, during the spring quarter of 2014. Student performance was measured using common midterms, final, and a pre/post content exam. We also employed surveys, the Colorado Learning Attitudes about Science Survey (CLASS) for Chemistry, and a weekly time-on-task survey to quantify students' attitudes and study habits. The effectiveness of the ChemWiki compared to a traditional textbook was examined using multiple linear regression analysis with a standard non-inferiority testing framework. Results show that the performance of students who were assigned readings from the ChemWiki section was non-inferior to the performance of students in the section who were assigned readings from the traditional textbook, indicating that the ChemWiki does not substantially differ from the standard textbook in terms of student learning outcomes. The results from the surveys also suggest that the two classes were similar in their beliefs about chemistry and minimal overall study time. These results indicate that the ChemWiki is a viable cost-saving alternative to traditional textbooks.
