Abstract

GH4169 is a precipitation‐strengthened nickel‐based high‐temperature alloy, and its mechanical behavior at different temperatures is of significant importance for practical applications. Here, an in situ study on the mechanical properties and microstructural evolution of the GH4169 alloy at different temperatures was conducted using scanning electron microscopy in combination with digital image correlation. The results demonstrate the existence of a linear relationship between the local average strain and the macroscopic strain. At temperatures of 20 °C, 100 °C, 180 °C, and 260 °C, the local average strain is 1.96, 2.13, 2.26, and 2.30 times the macroscopic strain, respectively, which shows a clear trend. This indicates that the temperature has a significant influence on the plasticity of the alloy. Additionally, the strain is concentrated below the notch, whereby at a macroscopic strain of 1.7 % at 20 °C and 260 °C, the local maximum strain at the notch is 52 % and 83 %, respectively. Furthermore, when the macroscopic strain reaches 2.12 %, the local maximum strain at the notch is 72 % and 103 %, respectively. At this point, cracks start to initiate and gradually propagate. In situ observations show that at the beginning of the tensile plasticity stage, the plastic strain rate in the grains is twice the rate at the grain boundaries; subsequently, both rates tend to stabilize, and a high‐strain zone appears inside the grains and is coordinately transferred to the surrounding grains through the grain boundaries. The final stage of damage of the alloy consists of perforation fracture, and the presence of a large number of cracked carbides at the fracture results in specimen cracking. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Southern Ocean (SO) air is amongst the most pristine on Earth, particularly during winter. Historically, there has been a focus on biogenic sources as an explanation for the seasonal cycle in cloud condensation nuclei concentrations (NCCN). NCCN is also sensitive to the strength of sink terms, although the magnitude of this term varies considerably. Wet deposition, a process encompassing coalescence scavenging (drizzle formation), is one such process that may be especially relevant over the SO. Using a boundary layer cloud climatology, NCCN and precipitation observations from Kennaook/Cape Grim Observatory (CGO), we find a statistically significant difference in NCCN between when the upwind meteorology is dominated by open mesoscale cellular convection (MCC) and closed MCC. When open MCC is dominant, a lower median NCCN (69 cm−3) is found compared to when closed MCC (89 cm−3) is dominant. Open MCC is found to precipitate more heavily (1.72 mm day−1) and more frequently (16.7% of the time) than closed MCC (0.29 mm day−1, 4.5%). These relationships are observed to hold across the seasonal cycle with maximum NCCN and minimum precipitation observed during Austral summer (DJF). Furthermore, the observed MCC morphology strongly depends on meteorological conditions. The relationship between NCCN and precipitation can be further examined across a diurnal cycle during the summer season. Although there was again a negative relationship between precipitation and NCCN, the precipitation cycle was out of phase with the NCCN cycle, leading it by ~3 hours, suggesting other factors, specifically the meteorology play a primary role in influencing precipitation. Abstract

Overview of current knowledge on management of hydrocarbon pollution in mangroves. Mangrove forests are vital in terms of biomass production and maintenance of the natural balance in coastal areas in the tropics. However, mangroves are subject to pollution from human activities. Oil pollution is one of the causes leading to the decline of mangroves, which represent only 1% of the area of all the world's tropical forests. Several techniques are available for the remediation of oil contaminated areas. Biodegradation appears to be the best suited to mangrove ecosystems. However this technique remains confined to the laboratory. Field tests in situ need to be conducted in order to evaluate the results obtained in the laboratory.
