Winter is the season of main concern for beekeepers since the temperature, humidity, and potential infection from mites and other diseases may lead the colony to death. As a consequence, beekeepers perform invasive checks on the colonies, exposing them to further harm. This paper proposes a novel design of an instrumented beehive involving color cameras placed inside the beehive and at the bottom of it, paving the way for new frontiers in beehive monitoring. The overall acquisition system is described focusing on design choices towards an effective solution for internal, contactless, and stress-free beehive monitoring. To validate our approach, we conducted an experimental campaign in 2023 and analyzed the collected images with YOLOv8 to understand if the proposed solution can be useful for beekeepers and what kind of information can be derived from this kind of monitoring, including the presence of Varroa destructor mites inside the beehive. We experimentally found that the observation point inside the beehive is the most challenging due to the frequent movements of the bees and the difficulties related to obtaining in-focus images. However, from these images, it is possible to find Varroa destructor mites. To examine the biomechanical demands of manual wheelchair propulsion, it is crucial to determine the wheelchair user's (WCU) force for propulsion technique parameter calculation. When using a pushrim-activated power-assisted wheelchair (PAPAW) on a wheelchair ergometer, a combined propulsion force from the WCU and PAPAW is exerted. To understand PAPAW's assistance and distinguish the WCU's force application from the force exerted by the PAPAW, both propulsion components must be assessed separately. In this study, a calibration of the PAPAW on an ergometer was developed to achieve this separation. The calibration consists of five steps: (I) Collecting data on force and velocity measured from the ergometer, along with electrical current and velocity from the PAPAW. (II) Synchronizing the velocity signals of the wheelchair ergometer and PAPAW using cross-correlation. (III) Calibrating the PAPAW's electromotors to convert electrical current (mA) to force (N). A product-specific motor constant of 0.30, provided an average ICC of 0.563, indicating a moderate agreement between the raw ergometer data (N) and the motor constant-converted drive-rim (PAPAW) data (from mA to N). (IV) Subtracting the PAPAW's force signal from the ergometer's measured force to isolate forces generated by the WCU. (V) Using markerless motion capture to determine and validate the phase of hand contact with the handrim. This technical note provides an example of PAPAW calibration for researchers and clinicians. Wheelchair ergometers are widely used in research, clinical practice, and sports environments. The majority of wheelchair ergometers are roller systems that allow for wheelchair propulsion in the personal wheelchair on one or two (instrumented) rollers. Oftentimes these systems are only statically calibrated. However, wheelchair propulsion is dynamic by nature, requiring a dynamic validation process. The aim of the current project was to present a low-cost portable system for the dynamic metrological verification of wheelchair roller ergometers, based on an instrumented reference wheel. The tangential force on the roller is determined, along with its uncertainty, from the reference wheel properties, and compared with the force measured by the ergometer. Uncertainty of this reference wheel system was found to be lower than the one of the ergometer used, indicating that this novel approach can be used for the metrological verification of ergometers. This research paper aimed to validate two methods for measuring loads during walking with instrumented crutches: one method to estimate partial weight-bearing on the lower limbs and another to estimate shoulder joint reactions. Currently, gait laboratories, instrumented with high-end measurement systems, are used to extract kinematic and kinetic data, but such facilities are expensive and not accessible to all patients. The proposed method uses instrumented crutches to measure ground reaction forces and does not require any motion capture devices or force platforms. The load on the lower limbs is estimated by subtracting the forces measured by the crutches from the subject's total weight. Since the model does not consider inertia contribution in dynamic conditions, the estimation improves with low walking cadence when walking with the two-point contralateral and the three-point partial weight-bearing patterns considered for the validation tests. The shoulder joint reactions are estimated using linear regression, providing accurate values for the forces but less accurate torque estimates. The crutches data are acquired and processed in real-time, allowing for immediate feedback, and the system can be used outdoors in real-world walking conditions. The validation of this method could lead to better monitoring of partial weight-bearing and shoulder joint reactions, which could improve patient outcomes and reduce complications. Time-of-flight cameras are widely adopted in a variety of indoor applications ranging from industrial object measurement to human activity recognition. However, the available products may differ in terms of the quality of the acquired point cloud, and the datasheet provided by the constructors may not be enough to guide researchers in the choice of the perfect device for their application. Hence, this work details the experimental procedure to assess time-of-flight cameras' error sources that should be considered when designing an application involving time-of-flight technology, such as the bias correction and the temperature influence on the point cloud stability. This is the first step towards a standardization of the metrological characterization procedure that could ensure the robustness and comparability of the results among tests and different devices. The procedure was conducted on Kinect Azure, Basler Blaze 101, and Basler ToF 640 cameras. Moreover, we compared the devices in the task of 3D reconstruction following a procedure involving the measure of both an object and a human upper-body-shaped mannequin. The experiment highlighted that, despite the results of the previously conducted metrological characterization, some devices showed evident difficulties in reconstructing the target objects. This study proposes an experimental method to estimate personalized inertial parameters of upper limbs during handcycling by using a planar dynamic model. The handle forces are expressed as a product of a matrix describing the kinematics terms and a vector of inertial parameters of arm and forearm. The parameters are estimated by measuring the handle forces during a suitable "passive test" and inverting the mentioned matrix. The data were acquired while an operator actuated the handle and the subject's muscles were relaxed. To validate the estimation procedure, it was applied to a custom-made artificial arm mechanism, and the results were compared with its known parameters. The method was then used to estimate the inertial parameters of 6 human subjects. The estimated parameters were used to compute the exchanged forces and compared with the measured ones obtaining an average error of 14% both for Fx and Fy. These errors are significantly smaller than those obtained using dynamic parameters extracted from the literature to compute the forces, which were 50% for Fx and 19% for Fy. An individual evaluation of inertial parameters better describes interaction forces during handcycling, especially for subjects whose body structures are different from the average population. Exoskeletons and exosuits have witnessed unprecedented growth in recent years, especially in the medical and industrial sectors. In order to be successfully integrated into the current society, these devices must comply with several commercialization rules and safety standards. Due to their intrinsic coupling with human limbs, one of the main challenges is to test and prove the quality of physical interaction with humans. However, the study of physical human–exoskeleton interactions (pHEI) has been poorly addressed in the literature. Understanding and identifying the technological ways to assess pHEI is necessary for the future acceptance and large-scale use of these devices. The harmonization of these evaluation processes represents a key factor in building a still missing accepted framework to inform human–device contact safety. In this review, we identify, analyze, and discuss the metrics, testing procedures, and measurement devices used to assess pHEI in the last ten years. Furthermore, we discuss the role of pHEI in safety contact evaluation. We found a very heterogeneous panorama in terms of sensors and testing methods, which are still far from considering realistic conditions and use-cases. We identified the main gaps and drawbacks of current approaches, pointing towards a number of promising research directions. Background: Crutches are the most common walking aids prescribed to improve mobility in subjects with central nervous system (CNS) lesions. To increase adherence to the appropriate level of crutch usage, providing load-related auditory feedback (aFB) may be a useful approach. We sensorized forearm crutches and developed a custom software to provide aFB information to both user and physical therapist (PhT). Aim: Evaluate aFB effects on load control during gait by a self-controlled case series trial. Methods: A single experimental session was conducted enrolling 12 CNS lesioned participants. Load on crutch was recorded during 10 Meter Walk Test performed with and without aFB. In both cases, crutch load data, and gait speed were recorded. Usability and satisfaction questionnaires were administered to participants and PhTs involved. Results: Reliable data were obtained from eight participants. Results showed that compared to the no FB condition, aFB yielded a significant reduction in the mean load on the crutches during gait (p = 0.001). The FB did not influence gait speed or fatigue (p > 0.05). The experience questionnaire data indicated a positive experience regarding the use of aFB from both participants' and PhTs' perspectives. Conclusion: aFB significantly improves compliance with crutch use and does not affect gait speed or fatigue by improving the load placed on crutches. The FB is perceived by users as helpful, safe, and easy to learn, and does not interfere with attention or concentration while walking. The paper presents a novel method for the classification of gait phases for power gait orthosis users based on machine learning. The classification uses depth images collected from a Time of Flight camera embedded in the crutches employed for the assisted gait. The machine learning algorithm foresees an initial phase of data collection and processing, identifying the 3D points belonging to the foot and those belonging to the floor. From these, a feature set is computed analyzing the values of percentiles of distances of the foot from the floor, and passed to a modified version of Random Forest classifier, called Sigma-z Random Forest. The classifier considers the uncertainties associated to each feature set and provides both the classification of the gait phase (stance or swing) and an associated confidence value. In this work, we propose the use of the confidence value to improve the reliability of the gait phase classification, by applying an optimized threshold to the confidence value obtained for each new frame. The algorithm has been tested on different subjects and environments. An average classification accuracy of 87.3% has been obtained (+6.3% with respect to the standard random forest classifier), with a minor loss of unclassifiable frames. The PMD Camboard Picoflexx Time-of-Flight (ToF) camera is evaluated against the Microsoft Kinect V2 to assess its performance in the context of markerless motion capture system for human body kinematics measurements. Various error sources such as the warm-up time, the depth distortion, the amplitude related error, the signal-to-noise ratio, and limitations such as their dependence on the illumination pattern and on the target distance, are studied and compared. The Picoflexx device is also compared to the Kinect V2 in relation to the quality of shape reconstructions, to assess its adequateness in modeling human body segments, and human body kinematics measurements. The final result of this paper is definitely useful to the research community, demonstrating that, even if the Picoflexx performs lower than the Kinect concerning the measurement performances, its behavior in estimating the volume of the body segments, the angles at the joints for human body kinematics, and the angle at the ankle in assisted walking applications is definitely satisfactory. These results are extremely significant to obtain accurate estimates of the parameters of the human body models in markerless motion capture applications, especially in laboratory-free environments, where compactness, lightweight, wireless connection, and low-power consumption are of outmost importance. This paper is a first step towards a smart hand gesture recognition set up for Collaborative Robots using a Faster R-CNN Object Detector to find the accurate position of the hands in RGB images. In this work, a gesture is defined as a combination of two hands, where one is an anchor and the other codes the command for the robot. Other spatial requirements are used to improve the performances of the model and filter out the incorrect predictions made by the detector. As a first step, we used only four gestures. An experimental investigation was carried out to study and compare the response to cyclic loading of the high-performance railway wheel steels ER8 EN13262 and SUPERLOS. Rolling contact tests were performed with the same contact pressure, rolling speed and sliding/rolling ratio, varying the lubrication regime to simulate different climatic conditions. The samples, machined out of wheel rims at two depths within the reprofiling layer, were coupled with UIC 900A rail steel samples. The wear rates, friction coefficients and hardness were correlated with the deformation beneath the contact surface. The crack morphology was studied, and the damage mechanisms were identified. The distribution of crack length and depth at the end of the dry tests was analyzed to quantify the damage. The main difference between the steels lies in the response of the external samples to dry contact: SUPERLOS is subjected to a higher wear and lower friction coefficient than ER8, and this reduces the density of surface cracks that can propagate under wet contact conditions. A novel depth from defocus (DFD) measurement system is presented, where the extension of the measurement range is performed using an emergent technology based on liquid lenses. A suitable set of different focal lengths, obtained by properly changing the liquid lens supply voltage, provides multiple camera settings without duplicating the system elements or using moving parts. A simple and compact setup, with a single camera/illuminator coaxial assembly, is obtained. The measurement is based on an active DFD technique using modulation measurement profilometry for the estimation of the contrast at each image point as a function of the depth range. Two different measurement methods are proposed, both based on a combination of multiple contrast curves, each derived at a specific focal length. In the first method (intensity contrast method), the depth information is recovered directly from the contrast curves, whereas in the second (differential contrast method), the depth is measured using contrast curve pairs. We obtained a measurement $\sigma _{{{0}}}$ of 0.55 mm over a depth range of 60 mm with the intensity contrast method (0.92% of the total range) and an $\sigma _{{{0}}}$ of 0.76 mm over a depth range of 135 mm with the differential contrast method (0.56% of the total range). Thus, the intensity contrast method is within the state-of-the-art DFD systems, whereas the differential contrast method allows, $\sigma _{{{0}}}$ being almost equal, a remarkable extension of the depth range. Powered exoskeletons can be used by the persons with complete spinal cord injury to achieve bipedal locomotion again. The training required before being able to efficiently operate these orthotics, however, is currently based on the subjective assessments of the patient performance by his therapist, without any quantitative information about the internal loads or assistance level. To solve this issue, a sensor system was developed, combining the traditional gait analysis systems, such as ground reaction force platforms and motion capture systems, with Lofstrand crutches instrumented by the authors. To each crutch three strain-gauge bridges were applied, to measure both axial and shear forces, as well as conditioning circuits with transmission modules and a triaxial accelerometer. An inverse dynamics analysis, on a simplified biomechanical model of the patient wearing the exoskeleton, is proposed by the authors as a tool to assess both the internal forces acting on shoulders, elbow, and neck of the patient, as well as the loads acting on joints. The same analysis was also used to quantify the assistance provided to the patient during walking, in terms of vertical forces applied by the therapist to the exoskeleton. The tests showed a therapist assistance contribution reported as a fraction of the subject body weight up to 40% with an average close to 0% and a standard deviation value of 14%. This paper describes the design, development, and characterization of two wireless instrumented crutches for gait monitoring in order to provide clinicians quantitative parameters of upper limbs’ contributions during walking. These parameters could be used to teach orthopedic patients to correctly use these supports and minimize problems connected to their usage. These instrumented crutches allow monitoring axial forces and shear forces, tilt angles, and time of impact on the ground in real time. Each crutch is composed of three strain-gauge bridges for measuring axial and shear forces, a conditioning circuit with transmission module, a triaxial accelerometer, a power management circuit, two batteries, and a biofeedback. The data are wirelessly transmitted via Bluetooth without needing any further readout unit, from the crutches to a personal computer, where the data are processed and displayed by a program created in LabVIEW. Each instrumented crutch was tested to assess the response of the accelerometer and the three strain-gauge bridges using a setup designed ad hoc. The mean experimental standard deviation was about 42 mV for axial forces corresponding to about 8 N and about 35 mV for shear forces corresponding to about 4 N. Hysteresis, linearity, and drift were calculated, and the obtained accuracy was about 8–9 N for axial forces and 4–5 N for shear forces. Furthermore, the crutches were tested during a walking activity of ten healthy subjects along a straight path for several trials. These crutches were used for a common analysis usually reported in the literature for weight bearing evaluation. The subjects were monitored performing a nonweight bearing (NWB) and a partial weight bearing (PWB) during a three-point gait. The results showed a mean of 102% ± 16% for NWB tests and a mean of 19% ±% for 10% PWB tests; these values are in agreement with similar studies in the literature. The simplicity that includes only constitutive strain gauges and a separable circuit board allows the achievement of the objectives of simplicity, ease of use, and noninvasiveness. This paper presents a new method for the automated processing of surface electromyography (SEMG) signals, particularly suited for the detection of muscle activation timing. The method has an intermediate level of complexity between simpler (but less performing) and more complex (but in general slower) methods, and is successfully used in the development of biomedical devices for rehabilitation carried out by our group. The method proposed here is based on a statistical approach for threshold computation that is implemented without the need of maximum voluntary contraction or relaxed state, usually required to overcome the difficulty in obtaining the threshold value. The method is compared with 10 popular automated standard methods using different types of simulated signals that approximate the behavior of real SEMG signals. Both the number of activations detected and the onset time measured are analyzed. The algorithm is then applied to real SEMG signals acquired from healthy subjects. The results are finally compared with the literature values. The results show that the proposed algorithm is the best performing method when both the number of activations and the activation timing are considered. Residual vibrations affect machines at the end of commanded motion and can cause a lengthening of the work cycle. The proposed work addresses to the reduction of this undesired phenomenon with an optimization approach based on the Fourier transformation of the motion profile suppressing a band of exciting frequencies around the natural frequencies of the system. Experimental results confirmed a significant improvement, in terms of residual vibrations, with respect to the state of the art of motion profiles specifically designed for residual vibrations reduction. Since cobots are designed to be flexible, they are frequently repositioned to change the production line according to the needs; hence, their working area (user frame) needs to be often calibrated. Therefore, it is important to adopt a fast and intuitive user frame calibration method that allows even non-expert users to perform the procedure effectively, reducing the possible mistakes that may arise in such contexts. The aim of this work was to quantitatively assess the performance of different user frame calibration procedures in terms of accuracy, complexity, and calibration time, to allow a reliable choice of which calibration method to adopt and the number of calibration points to use, given the requirements of the specific application. This has been done by first analyzing the performances of a Rethink Robotics Sawyer robot built-in user frame calibration method (Robot Positioning System, RPS) based on the analysis of a fiducial marker distortion obtained from the image acquired by the wrist camera. This resulted in a quantitative analysis of the limitations of this approach that only computes local calibration planes, highlighting the reduction of performances observed. Hence, the analysis focused on the comparison between two traditional calibration methods involving rigid markers to determine the best number of calibration points to adopt to achieve good repeatability performances. The analysis shows that, among the three methods, the RPS one resulted in very poor repeatability performances (1.42 mm), while the three and five points calibration methods achieve lower values (0.33 mm and 0.12 mm, respectively) which are closer to the reference repeatability (0.08 mm). Moreover, comparing the overall calibration times achieved by the three methods, it is shown that, incrementing the number of calibration points to more than five, it is not suggested since it could lead to a plateau in the performances, while increasing the overall calibration time. This study shows the application of a system to monitor the state of damage of railway wheel steel specimens during rolling contact fatigue tests. This system can make continuous measurements with an evaluation of damage without stopping the tests and without destructive measurements. Four tests were carried out to train the system by recording torque and vibration data. Both statistical and spectral features were extracted from the sensors signals. A Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was performed to reduce the volume of the initial dataset; then, the data were classified with the k-means algorithm. The results were then converted into probabilities curves. Metallurgical investigations (optical micrographs, wear curves) and hardness tests were carried out to assess the trends of machine learning analysis. The training tests were used to train the proposed algorithm. Three validation tests were performed by using the real-time results of the k-means algorithm as a stop condition. Metallurgical analysis was performed also in this case. The validation tests follow the results of the training test and metallurgical analysis confirms the damage found with the machine learning analysis: when the membership probability of the cluster corresponding to the damage state reaches a value higher than 0.5, the metallurgical analysis clearly shows the cracks on the surface of the specimen due to the rolling contact fatigue (RCF) damage mechanism. These preliminary results are positive, even if reproduced on a limited set of specimens. This paper presents the validation of a marker-less motion capture system used to evaluate the upper limb stress of subjects using exoskeletons for locomotion. The system fuses the human skeletonization provided by commercial 3D cameras with forces exchanged by the user to the ground through upper limbs utilizing instrumented crutches. The aim is to provide a low cost, accurate, and reliable technology useful to provide the trainer a quantitative evaluation of the impact of assisted gait on the subject without the need to use an instrumented gait lab. The reaction forces at the upper limbs' joints are measured to provide a validation focused on clinically relevant quantities for this application. The system was used simultaneously with a reference motion capture system inside a clinical gait analysis lab. An expert user performed 20 walking tests using instrumented crutches and force platforms inside the observed volume. The mechanical model was applied to data from the system and the reference motion capture, and numerical simulations were performed to assess the internal joint reaction of the subject's upper limbs.
