Study region: Chao Phraya River Basin—a major river with unique characteristics located in Thailand. Study focus: This study sought to simulate the flow rates in the Chao Phraya River Basin, which is a tidal river that poses challenges to traditional modeling approaches. The soil and water assessment tool (SWAT) is a hydrological model extensively employed for simulating flow rates. However, limitations arise in applying the SWAT model to the Chao Phraya River Basin due to its tidal nature, resulting in an unsatisfactory model performance. To address this, a long short-term memory (LSTM) model, i.e., the SWAT–LSTM model, was introduced to complement the SWAT model. New hydrological insights for the Region: The collaborative coupling of hydrological information derived from the SWAT and LSTM notably enhanced the model performance. This improvement was assessed using the Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE), demonstrating an increase from 0.13 to 0.72. The incorporation of topographic static data in the coupling model was also investigated to provide the basic characteristics of the basin to the model. The results yielded an NSE exceeding 0.79. The shoreline water level was identified as a crucial input feature for indicating tidal patterns. The findings highlight the effectiveness of coupling the SWAT with LSTM for predicting tidal river flow rates, implying their applicability in similar scenarios across different basins.

The impacts of climate change on hydrology underscore the urgency of understanding watershed hydrological patterns for sustainable water resource management. The conventional physics-based fully distributed hydrological models are limited due to computational demands, particularly in the case of large-scale watersheds. Deep learning (DL) offers a promising solution for handling large datasets and extracting intricate data relationships. Here, we propose a DL modeling framework, incorporating convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to efficiently replicate physics-based model outputs at high spatial resolution. The goal was to estimate groundwater head and surface water depth in the Sabgyo Stream Watershed, South Korea. The model datasets consisted of input variables, including elevation, land cover, soil type, evapotranspiration, rainfall, and initial hydrological conditions. The initial conditions and target data were obtained from the fully distributed hydrological model HydroGeoSphere (HGS), whereas the other inputs were actual measurements in the field. By optimizing the training sample size, input design, CNN structure, and hyperparameters, we found that CNNs with residual architectures (ResNets) yielded superior performance. The optimal DL model reduces computation time by 45 times compared to the HGS model for monthly hydrological estimations over five years (RMSE 2.35 and 0.29 m for groundwater and surface water, respectively). In addition, our DL framework explored the predictive capabilities of hydrological responses to future climate scenarios. Although the proposed model is cost-effective for hydrological simulations, further enhancements are needed to improve the accuracy of long-term predictions. Ultimately, the proposed DL framework has the potential to facilitate decision-making, particularly in large-scale and complex watersheds.

Water quality is substantially influenced by a multitude of dynamic and interrelated variables, including climate conditions, landuse and seasonal changes. Deep learning models have demonstrated predictive power of water quality due to the superior ability to automatically learn complex patterns and relationships from variables. Long short-term memory (LSTM), one of deep learning models for water quality prediction, is a type of recurrent neural network that can account for longer-term traits of time-dependent data. It is the most widely applied network used to predict the time series of water quality variables. First, we reviewed applications of a standalone LSTM and discussed its calculation time, prediction accuracy, and good robustness with process-driven numerical models and the other machine learning. This review was expanded into the LSTM model with data pre-processing techniques, including the Complete Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition with Adaptive Noise method and Synchrosqueezed Wavelet Transform. The review then focused on the coupling of LSTM with a convolutional neural network, attention network, and transfer learning. The coupled networks demonstrated their performance over the standalone LSTM model. We also emphasized the influence of the static variables in the model and used the transformation method on the dataset. Outlook and further challenges were addressed. The outlook for research and application of LSTM in hydrology concludes the review.

Inland water frequently occurs during harmful algal blooms (HABs), rendering it challenging to comprehend the spatiotemporal features of algal dynamics. Recently, remote sensing has been applied to effectively detect the algal spatiotemporal behaviors in expensive water bodies. However, image sensor resolution limitation can render the understanding of spatiotemporal features of relatively small water bodies challenging. In addition, few studies have improved the resolution of remote sensing images to investigate inland water quality, owing to the image sensor resolution limitations. Therefore, this study applied deep learning-based Super-resolution for transforming satellite imagery of 20 m to airborne imagery of 5 m. After performing atmospheric correction for the acquired images, we adopted super-resolution (SR) methodologies using a super-resolution convolutional neural network (SRCNN) and super-resolution generative adversarial networks (SRGAN) to estimate the Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration in the Geum River of South Korea. Both methods generated SR images with water reflectance at 665, 705, and 740 nm. Then, two band-ratio algorithms at 665 and 740 nm wavelengths were applied to the reflectance images to estimate the Chl-a concentration maps. The SRCNN model outperformed SRGAN and bicubic interpolation with peak signal-to-noise ratios (PSNR), mean square errors (MSE), and structural similarity index measures (SSIM) for the validation dataset of 24.47 (dB), 0.0074, and 0.74, respectively. SR maps from the SRCNN provided more detailed spatial information on Chl-a in the Geum River compared to the information obtained from satellite images. Therefore, these findings showed the potential of deep learning-based SR algorithms by providing further information according to the algal dynamics for inland water management with remote sensing images.

Although remote sensing techniques have been used to monitor toxic cyanobacteria with hyperspectral data in inland water, it is difficult to optimize conventional bio-optical algorithms for individual water bodies because of the complex optical properties of various water components. Therefore, this study adopted a spatial attention convolutional neural network (spatial attention CNN) to estimate the chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and phycocyanin (PC) concentrations in the Geum, Nakdong, and Yeongsan rivers in South Korea in order to evaluate cyanobacteria using remote sensing reflectance data. The CNN model utilized a spatial attention module to analyze the importance of the bands in the reflectance data. Then, the spatial attention CNN model was compared with different bio-optical algorithms for each study area. The spatial attention CNN model was generalized to estimate the pigment concentrations in the target rivers, and the model performance was evaluated by correlation coefficient (R) and root mean squared error (RMSE) between the observed and estimated concentrations of the algal pigments. The spatial attention CNN model, which was generalized to estimate the pigment concentrations in the target rivers, had R values above 0.87 and 0.88 for Chl-a and PC, respectively. However, the optimized band ratio algorithms for Chl-a and PC had R values above 0.83 and 0.70, respectively. Hence, it showed better performance than the conventional bio-optical algorithms. The spatial attention module provided attention weights for visualizing important features in the reflectance data. Specifically, the 600 nm, 650 nm, and near-infrared regions had high attention weights for estimating the concentrations of Chl-a and PC. Based on these findings, this study demonstrated that the spatial attention CNN model has a high potential for good application performance in various water bodies.

Intensive algal blooms increasingly degrade the inland water quality. Hence, this study aimed to analyze the algal phenomena quantitatively and qualitatively using synoptic monitoring, algal pigment analysis, and a deep learning model. Water surface reflectance was measured using field monitoring and drone hyperspectral image sensing. The algal experiment conducted on the water samples provided data on major pigments including chlorophyll-a and phycocyanin, accessory pigments including lutein, fucoxanthin, and zeaxanthin, and absorption coefficients. Based on the reflectance and absorption coefficient spectral inputs, a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN) was developed to estimate the concentrations of the major and minor pigments. The 1D-CNN could model periodic trends of chlorophyll-a, phycocyanin, lutein, fucoxanthin, and zeaxanthin compared to the observed ones, with R2 values of 0.87, 0.71, 0.76, 0.78, and 0.74, respectively. In addition, major and secondary pigment maps developed by applying the trained 1D-CNN model to the processed drone hyperspectral image inputs successfully provided spatial information regarding the spots of interest. The model provided explicit algal biomass information using the estimated major pigments and implicit taxonomical information using accessory pigments such as green algae, diatoms, and cyanobacteria. Therefore, we provide strong evidence of the extendibility of deep learning models for analyzing various algal pigments to gain a better understanding of algal blooms.

The rapid expansion of urbanization has resulted in an insufficient of groundwater resource. In order to use groundwater more efficiently, a risk assessment of groundwater pollution should be proposed. The present study used machine learning with three algorithms consisting of Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to locate risk areas of arsenic contamination in Rayong coastal aquifers, Thailand and selected the suitable model based on model performance and uncertainty for risk assessment. The parameters of 653 groundwater wells (Deep=236, Shallow=417) were selected based on the correlation of each hydrochemical parameters with arsenic concentration in deep and shallow aquifer environments. The models were validated with arsenic concentration collected from 27 well data in the field. The model’s performance indicated that the RF algorithm has the highest performance as compared to those of SVM and ANN in both deep and shallow aquifers (Deep: AUC=0.72, Recall=0.61, F1 =0.69; Shallow: AUC=0.81, Recall=0.79, F1 =0.68). In addition, the uncertainty from the quantile regression of each model confirmed that the RF algorithm has the lowest uncertainty (Deep: PICP=0.20; Shallow: PICP=0.34). The result of the risk map obtained from the RF reveals that the deep aquifer, in the northern part of the Rayong basin has a higher risk for people to expose to As. In contrast, the shallow aquifer revealed that the southern part of the basin has a higher risk, which is also supported by the location of the landfill and industrial estates in the area. Therefore, health surveillance is important in monitoring the toxic effects on the residents who use groundwater from these contaminated wells. The outcome of this study can help policymakers in regions to manage the quality of groundwater resources and enhance the sustainable use of groundwater resources. The novelty process of this research can be used to further study other groundwater aquifers contaminated and increase the effectiveness of groundwater quality management.

Colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in inland waters is used as a proxy to estimate dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and may be a key indicator of water quality and nutrient enrichment. CDOM is optically active fraction of DOC so that remote sensing techniques can remotely monitor CDOM with wide spatial coverage. However, to effectively retrieve CDOM using optical algorithms, it may be critical to select the absorption coefficient at an appropriate wavelength as an output variable and to optimize input reflectance wavelengths. In this study, we constructed a CDOM retrieval model using airborne hyperspectral reflectance data and a machine learning model such as random forest. We evaluated the best combination of input wavelength bands and the CDOM absorption coefficient at various wavelengths. Seven sampling events for airborne hyperspectral imagery and CDOM absorption coefficient data from 350 nm to 440 nm over two years (2016–2017) were used, and the collected data helped train and validate the random forest model in a freshwater reservoir. An absorption coefficient of 355 nm was selected to best represent the CDOM concentration. The random forest exhibited the best performance for CDOM estimation with an R2 of 0.85, Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency of 0.77, and percent bias of 3.88, by using a combination of three reflectance bands: 475, 497, and 660 nm. The results show that our model can be utilized to construct a CDOM retrieving algorithm and evaluate its spatiotemporal variation across a reservoir.

Oral cancer: Stopping the spread Resveratrol, a naturally occurring compound present in grape skins, peanuts, and blueberries, reduces the ability of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cells to spread to other parts of the body. Over half a million new cases of OSCC are diagnosed each year, and spread beyond the mouth is the most common cause of death. Hoi Young Lee at Konyang University, Daejon, Republic of Korea, and co-workers investigated whether a protein called RCP, which increases the invasiveness of many but not all types of cancer, is implicated in aggressive spread of OSCC. They found that RCP does increase the invasiveness of OSCC. Resveratrol is known to suppress the spread of many cancers, and strongly curtailed the spread of OSCC by blocking RCP activity. These results shed light on OSCC invasiveness, and offer a potential new treatment.

In several countries, the public health and fishery industries have suffered from harmful algal blooms (HABs) that have escalated to become a global issue. Though computational modeling offers an effective means to understand and mitigate the adverse effects of HABs, it is challenging to design models that adequately reflect the complexity of HAB dynamics. This paper presents a method involving the application of deep learning to an ocean model for simulating blooms of Alexandrium catenella. The classification and regression convolutional neural network (CNN) models are used for simulating the blooms. The classification CNN determines the bloom initiation while the regression CNN estimates the bloom density. GoogleNet and Resnet 101 are identified as the best structures for the classification and regression CNNs, respectively. The corresponding accuracy and root means square error values are determined as 96.8% and 1.20 [log(cells L–1)], respectively. The results obtained in this study reveal the simulated distribution to follow the Alexandrium catenella bloom. Moreover, Grad-CAM identifies that the salinity and temperature contributed to the initiation of the bloom whereas NH4-N influenced the growth of the bloom.

Abstract Rechargeable seawater battery (SWB) is a unique energy storage system that can directly transform seawater into renewable energy. Placing a desalination compartment between SWB anode and cathode (denoted as seawater battery desalination; SWB‐D) enables seawater desalination while charging SWB. Since seawater desalination is a mature technology, primarily occupied by membrane‐based processes such as reverse osmosis (RO), the energy cost has to be considered for alternative desalination technologies. So far, the feasibility of the SWB‐D system based on the unit cost per desalinated water ($ m−3) has been insufficiently discussed. Therefore, this perspective aims to provide this information and offer future research directions based on the detailed cost analysis. Based on the calculations, the current SWB‐D system is expected to have an equipment cost of ≈1.02 $ m−3 (lower than 0.60–1.20 $ m−3 of RO), when 96% of the energy is recovered and stable performance for 1000 cycles is achieved. The anion exchange membrane (AEM) and separator contributes greatly to the material cost occupying 50% and 41% of the total cost, respectively. Therefore, future studies focusing on creating low cost AEMs and separators will pave the way for the large‐scale application of SWB‐D.

Understanding the concentration and distribution of cyanobacteria blooms is an important aspect of managing water quality problems and protecting aquatic ecosystems. Airborne hyperspectral imagery (HSI)—which has high temporal, spatial, and spectral resolutions—is widely used to remotely sense cyanobacteria bloom, and it provides the distribution of the bloom over a wide area. In this study, we determined the input spectral bands that were relevant in effectively estimating the main two pigments (PC, Phycocyanin; Chl-a, Chlorophyll-a) of cyanobacteria by applying data-driven algorithms to HSI and then evaluating the change in the spatio-temporal distribution of cyanobacteria. The input variables for the algorithms consisted of reflectance band ratios associated with the optical properties of PC and Chl-a, which were calculated by the selected hyperspectral bands using a feature selection method. The selected input variable was composed of six reflectance bands (465.7–589.6, 603.6–631.8, 641.2–655.35, 664.8–679.0, 698.0–712.3, and 731.4–784.1 nm). The artificial neural network showed the best results for the estimation of the two pigments with average coefficients of determination 0.80 and 0.74. This study proposes relevant input spectral information and an algorithm that can effectively detect the occurrence of cyanobacteria in the weir pool along the Geum river, South Korea. The algorithm is expected to help establish a preemptive response to the formation of cyanobacterial blooms, and to contribute to the preparation of suitable water quality management plans for freshwater environments.

Antarctic shelf systems play an important role in organic matter circulation on Earth; hence, identifying the characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) can be a good indicator for understanding its origin, as well as climate change. In this study, to identify the characteristics of DOM in the ice shelf systems, surface water was collected from the open sea (OS) and Marian cove (fjord, FJ). Although there were no differences in DOM characteristics between sampling sites in the quantitative analyses, the DOM in the surface water of each region seemed to be more affected by terrestrial than marine biological sources in optical and molecular properties. This finding indicates that the terrestrial DOM related to mosses based on the results of molecular properties: high levels of lipid-like (35–39%) and unsaturated hydrocarbon-like (UH; 27–34%) in both the OS and the FJ regions and significantly higher tannin-like substance and condensed aromatic structures in the FJ than in the OS region. When comparing the FJ transect samples, those nearest to a glacier (FJ1; 0.93 km from the glacier) showed relatively low salinity, high dissolved organic carbon, and high chromophoric DOM, indicating that terrestrial DOM (possibly produced by moss) inflow occurred with the runoff from the freshly melting land ice and glacier. However, no significant differences in molecular composition were detected, suggesting that terrestrial DOM is introduced into the ice shelf systems by melting land ice, and glacier runoff could be a major source of DOM-rich seawater during austral fall when low marine biological activity occurs. This study has a great significance as background data for DOM characteristics in the ice shelf systems due to the enhanced biological activity during the austral summer.

Ovarian cancer: Natural compound suppresses cancer cell invasiveness Rab coupling protein (RCP)-induced tumor cell migration has been implicated in tumor pathophysiology and patient outcomes. Hoi Young Lee and colleagues at Konyang University in Daejeon, South Korea, have previously shown that RCP promotes ovarian cancer cell invasiveness by stabilizing cell adhesion receptors. In their latest study they find that RCP also increases the levels of two of its protein-binding partners and activates an important mediator of growth factor signaling, Focal Adhesion Kinase (FAK). Interestingly, treating ovarian cancer cells with curcumin, a natural compound extracted from the spice turmeric, not only blocked the effects of RCP on cell adhesion and FAK activation, it also potentiated the inhibitory effects of the chemotherapeutic agent doxorubicin on cell invasiveness. Further research will determine whether curcumin could be used to halt ovarian cancer progression.

Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA), a bioactive lipid produced extracellularly by autotaxin (ATX), has been known to induce various pathophysiological events, including cancer cell invasion and metastasis. Discoidin domain receptor 2 (DDR2) expression is upregulated in ovarian cancer tissues, and is closely associated with poor clinical outcomes in ovarian cancer patients. In the present study, we determined a critical role and signaling cascade for the expression of DDR2 in LPA-induced ovarian cancer cell invasion. We also found ectopic expression of ATX or stimulation of ovarian cancer cells with LPA-induced DDR2 expression. However, the silencing of DDR2 expression significantly inhibited ATX- and LPA-induced ovarian cancer cell invasion. In addition, treatment of the cells with pharmacological inhibitors of phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K), Akt, and mTOR abrogated LPA-induced DDR2 expression. Moreover, we observed that HIF-1α, located downstream of the mTOR, is implicated in LPA-induced DDR2 expression and ovarian cancer cell invasion. Finally, we provide evidence that LPA-induced HIF-1α expression mediates Twist1 expression to upregulate DDR2 expression. Collectively, the present study demonstrates that ATX, and thereby LPA, induces DDR2 expression through the activation of the PI3K/Akt/mTOR/HIF-1α/Twist1 signaling axes, aggravating ovarian cancer cell invasion.

Remote sensing can detect and map algal blooms. The HydroLight (Sequoia Scientific Inc., Bellevue, Washington, DC, USA) model generates the reflectance profiles of various water bodies. However, the influence of model parameters has rarely been investigated for inland water. Moreover, the simulation time of the HydroLight model increases as the amount of input data increases, which limits the practicality of the HydroLight model. This study developed a graphical user interface (GUI) software for the sensitivity analysis of the HydroLight model through multiple executions. The GUI software stably performed parameter sensitivity analysis and substantially reduced the simulation time by up to 92%. The GUI software results for lake water show that the backscattering ratio was the most important parameter for estimating vertical reflectance profiles. Based on the sensitivity analysis results, parameter calibration of the HydroLight model was performed. The reflectance profiles obtained using the optimized parameters agreed with observed profiles, with R2 values of over 0.98. Thus, a strong relationship between the backscattering coefficient and the observed cyanobacteria genera cells was identified.

In this study, the adsorption of herbicides using ground coffee residue biochars without (GCRB) and with NaOH activation (GCRB-N) was compared to provide deeper insights into their adsorption behaviors and mechanisms. The physicochemical characteristics of GCRB and GCRB-N were analyzed using Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction and the effects of pH, temperature, ionic strength, and humic acids on the adsorption of herbicides were identified. Moreover, the adsorption kinetics and isotherms were studied. The specific surface area and total pore volume of GCRB-N (405.33 m2/g and 0.293 cm3/g) were greater than those of GCRB (3.83 m2/g and 0.014 cm3/g). The GCBR-N could more effectively remove the herbicides (Qe,exp of Alachlor = 122.71 μmol/g, Qe,exp of Diuron = 166.42 μmol/g, and Qe,exp of Simazine = 99.16 μmol/g) than GCRB (Qe,exp of Alachlor = 11.74 μmol/g, Qe,exp of Diuron = 9.95 μmol/g, and Qe,exp of Simazine = 6.53 μmol/g). These results suggested that chemical activation with NaOH might be a promising option to make the GCRB more practical and effective for removing herbicides in the aqueous solutions.

Faulty field sensors cause unreliability in the observed data that needed to calibrate and assess hydrology models. However, it is illogical to ignore abnormal or missing values if there are limited data available. This study addressed this problem by applying data imputation to replace incorrect values and recover missing streamflow information in the dataset of the Samho gauging station at Taehwa River (TR), Korea from 2004 to 2006. Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) and two machine learning techniques, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Self Organizing Map (SOM), were employed to estimate streamflow using reasonable flow datasets of Samho station from 2004 to 2009. The machine learning models were generally better at capturing high flows, while SWAT was better at simulating low flows.

The Chao Phraya River in Thailand has been greatly affected by climate change and the occurrence of extreme flood events, hindering its economic development. This study assessed the hydrological responses of the Chao Phraya River basin under several climate sensitivity and greenhouse gas emission scenarios. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model was applied to simulate the streamflow using meteorological and observed data over a nine-year period from 2003 to 2011. The SWAT model produced an acceptable performance for calibration and validation, yielding Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) values greater than 0.5. Precipitation scenarios yielded streamflow variations that corresponded to the change of rainfall intensity and amount of rainfall, while scenarios with increased air temperatures predicted future water shortages. High CO2 concentration scenarios incorporated plant responses that led to a dramatic increase in streamflow. The greenhouse gas emission scenarios increased the streamflow variations to 6.8%, 41.9%, and 38.4% from the reference period (2003–2011). This study also provided a framework upon which the peak flow can be managed to control the nonpoint sources during wet season. We hope that the future climate scenarios presented in this study could provide predictive information for the river basin.

In the past few decades, membrane-based processes have become mainstream in water desalination because of their relatively high water flux, salt rejection, and reasonable operating cost over thermal-based desalination processes. The energy consumption of the membrane process has been continuously lowered (from >10 kWh m−3 to ~3 kWh m−3) over the past decades but remains higher than the theoretical minimum value (~0.8 kWh m−3) for seawater desalination. Thus, the high energy consumption of membrane processes has led to the development of alternative processes, such as the electrochemical, that use relatively less energy. Decades of research have revealed that the low energy consumption of the electrochemical process is closely coupled with a relatively low extent of desalination. Recent studies indicate that electrochemical process must overcome efficiency rather than energy consumption hurdles. This short perspective aims to provide platforms to compare the energy efficiency of the representative membrane and electrochemical processes based on the working principle of each process. Future water desalination methods and the potential role of nanotechnology as an efficient tool to overcome current limitations are also discussed.

This study investigated the influence of combined organic fouling and inorganic scaling on the flux and fouling behaviors of thin-film composite (TFC) forward osmosis (FO) membranes. Two organic macromolecules, namely, bovine serum albumin (BSA) and sodium alginate (SA), and gypsum (GS), as an inorganic scaling agent, were selected as model foulants. It was found that GS scaling alone caused the most severe flux decline. When a mixture of organic and inorganic foulants was employed, the flux decline was retarded, compared with when the filtration was performed with only the inorganic scaling agent (GS). The early onset of the conditioning layer formation, which was due to the organics, was probably the underlying mechanism for this inhibitory phenomenon, which had suppressed the deposition and growth of the GS crystals. Although the combined fouling resulted in less flux decline, compared with GS scaling alone, the concoction of SA and GS resulted in more fouling and flux decline, compared with the mixture of BSA and GS. This was because of the carboxyl acidity of the alginate, which attracted calcium ions and formed an intermolecular bridge.

Blooms of the ichthyotoxic dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoides are responsible for massive fish mortality events in Korean coastal waters (KCW). They have been consistently present in southern KCW over the last two decades, but they were not observed in 2016, unlike in the previous years. Despite extensive studies, the cause of this absence of this dinoflagellate bloom remains largely unknown. Thus, we compared physico-chemical and biological data from along the Tongyeong coast between 2016 and the previous four years (2012–2015). The averages of water temperature and salinity in August, 2016 were significantly (p < 0.001) different from those in the previous years. The amount of Changjiang River discharge, which can affect the environmental conditions in the southern Korean coastal area via ocean currents, was larger than in the previous years, resulting in a reduction in the salinity level in August when blooms of C. polykrikoides usually occurred. Moreover, compared to previous years, in 2016, there was a weak expansion of C. polykrikoides blooms in the Goheung-Oenarodo area where C. polykrikoides blooms were annually initiated in KCW. Lastly, the strong winds from the typhoon Lionrock may also have contributed to the early termination of this dinoflagellate bloom. Together with these findings, the combination of these environmental conditions in 2016, unlike in previous years, may have inhibited the formation of C. polykrikoides blooms along the Tongyeong coast.

Hyperspectral image sensing can be used to effectively detect the distribution of harmful cyanobacteria. To accomplish this, physical- and/or model-based simulations have been conducted to perform an atmospheric correction (AC) and an estimation of pigments, including phycocyanin (PC) and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), in cyanobacteria. However, such simulations were undesirable in certain cases, due to the difficulty of representing dynamically changing aerosol and water vapor in the atmosphere and the optical complexity of inland water. Thus, this study was focused on the development of a deep neural network model for AC and cyanobacteria estimation, without considering the physical formulation. The stacked autoencoder (SAE) network was adopted for the feature extraction and dimensionality reduction of hyperspectral imagery. The artificial neural network (ANN) and support vector regression (SVR) were sequentially applied to achieve AC and estimate cyanobacteria concentrations (i.e., SAE-ANN and SAE-SVR). Further, the ANN and SVR models without SAE were compared with SAE-ANN and SAE-SVR models for the performance evaluations. In terms of AC performance, both SAE-ANN and SAE-SVR displayed reasonable accuracy with the Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) > 0.7. For PC and Chl-a estimation, the SAE-ANN model showed the best performance, by yielding NSE values > 0.79 and > 0.77, respectively. SAE, with fine tuning operators, improved the accuracy of the original ANN and SVR estimations, in terms of both AC and cyanobacteria estimation. This is primarily attributed to the high-level feature extraction of SAE, which can represent the spatial features of cyanobacteria. Therefore, this study demonstrated that the deep neural network has a strong potential to realize an integrative remote sensing application.

This study explored the possibility of using reverse osmosis (RO) reject water as a mixing water for producing cementitious bricks using calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) cement along with gypsum, and it investigated the changes in the properties of CSA cement pastes when RO reject water was used. The results were compared with those obtained using purified water and seawater. Overall, the use of RO reject water improved the cement paste’s strength. Given that the use of RO reject water very slightly affected ettringite formation but more significantly influenced the Al2O3-Fe2O3-mono (AFm) phases (i.e., monosulfate, kuzelite, and Friedel’s salt) and amorphous aluminum hydroxide (AH3), the strength improvement was likely mainly due to the formation of Friedel’s salt rather than ettringite formation. This study also demonstrated that the use of RO reject water for brick production satisfied the Korean Standards (KS) F 4004 and toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP); thus, it is recommended to use RO reject water as a mixing water to produce CSA cement bricks for use in construction.

Source tracking of dissolved organic matter (DOM) is important to manage water quality in rivers. However, it is difficult to find the source of this DOM because various DOMs can be added from the river watershed. Moreover, the DOM composition can be changed due to environmental conditions. This study investigated the change of organic matter characteristics in the Taewha River of Ulsan City, Korea, before and after rainfall. A Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) was used to simulate water flow from various sources, and dissolved organic matter characterization was conducted in terms of molecular size distribution, hydrophobicity, fluorescence excitation and emission, and molecular composition. From the results, it was found that lateral flow transported hydrophobic and large-molecule organic matter after rainfall. According to the orbitrap mass spectrometer analysis, the major molecular compound of the DOM was lignin. Coupling the SWAT model with organic matter characterization was an effective approach to find sources of DOM in river.

Existing buildings are likely to consume more energy and emit more greenhouse gases than new buildings because of inevitable deteriorations in physical performance. Accordingly, retrofitting of existing buildings is considered essential to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions from the building sector. However, assessing the energy performance of existing buildings accurately has limitations because building materials undergo physical deterioration and the actual operational conditions differ from as-built documentation. There is also a difference in the level of data acquisition required for building energy performance assessment depending on the conditions of the building. The aim of this paper is to present types of methods for energy performance assessment of existing buildings considering this data acquisition level. We analyzed various assessment methods, which were classified into three prototypes of methods according to the required level of data acquisition. Type 1 assessed the target building based on literature sources. Type 2 conducted on-site audit and assessed the target building based on additional collected data. Type 3 assessed the target building by further estimating the building properties through analysis of the measured energy data. The applicability of the proposed methods were demonstrated using case studies of three buildings located in Seoul, South Korea.

Harmful algal blooms have negatively affected the aquaculture industry and aquatic ecosystems globally. Remote sensing using satellite sensor systems has been applied on large spatial scales with high temporal resolutions for effective monitoring of harmful algal blooms in coastal waters. However, oceanic color satellites have limitations, such as low spatial resolution of sensor systems and the optical complexity of coastal waters. In this study, bands 1 to 4, obtained from Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager satellite images, were used to evaluate the performance of empirical ocean chlorophyll algorithms using machine learning techniques. Artificial neural network and support vector machine techniques were used to develop an optimal chlorophyll-a model. Four-band, four-band-ratio, and mixed reflectance datasets were tested to select the appropriate input dataset for estimating chlorophyll-a concentration using the two machine learning models. While the ocean chlorophyll algorithm application on Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager showed relatively low performance, the machine learning methods showed improved performance during both the training and validation steps. The artificial neural network and support vector machine demonstrated a similar level of prediction accuracy. Overall, the support vector machine showed slightly superior performance to that of the artificial neural network during the validation step. This study provides practical information about effective monitoring systems for coastal algal blooms.

Hyperspectral imagery (HSI) provides substantial information on optical features of water bodies that is usually applicable to water quality monitoring. However, it generates considerable uncertainties in assessments of spatial and temporal variation in water quality. Thus, this study explored the influence of different optical methods on the spatial distribution and concentration of phycocyanin (PC), chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), and total suspended solids (TSSs) and evaluated the dependence of algal distribution on flow velocity. Four ground-based and airborne monitoring campaigns were conducted to measure water surface reflectance. The actual concentrations of PC, Chl-a, and TSSs were also determined, while four bio-optical algorithms were calibrated to estimate the PC and Chl-a concentrations. Artificial neural network atmospheric correction achieved Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) values of 0.80 and 0.76 for the training and validation steps, respectively. Moderate resolution atmospheric transmission 6 (MODTRAN 6) showed an NSE value >0.8; whereas, atmospheric and topographic correction 4 (ATCOR 4) yielded a negative NSE value. The MODTRAN 6 correction led to the highest R2 values and lowest root mean square error values for all algorithms in terms of PC and Chl-a. The PC:Chl-a distribution generated using HSI proved to be negatively dependent on flow velocity (p-value = 0.003) and successfully indicated cyanobacteria risk regions in the study area.

Exposure to highly toxic pesticides could potentially cause cancer and disrupt the development of vital systems. Monitoring activities were performed to assess the level of contamination; however, these were costly, laborious, and short-term leading to insufficient monitoring data. However, the performance of the existing Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT model) can be restricted by its two-phase partitioning approach, which is inadequate when it comes to simulating pesticides with limited dataset. This study developed a modified SWAT pesticide model to address these challenges. The modified model considered the three-phase partitioning model that classifies the pesticide into three forms: dissolved, particle-bound, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC)-associated pesticide. The addition of DOC-associated pesticide particles increases the scope of the pesticide model by also considering the adherence of pesticides to the organic carbon in the soil. The modified SWAT and original SWAT pesticide model was applied to the Pagsanjan-Lumban (PL) basin, a highly agricultural region. Malathion was chosen as the target pesticide since it is commonly used in the basin. The pesticide models simulated the fate and transport of malathion in the PL basin and showed the temporal pattern of selected subbasins. The sensitivity analyses revealed that application efficiency and settling velocity were the most sensitive parameters for the original and modified SWAT model, respectively. Degradation of particulate-phase malathion were also significant to both models. The rate of determination (R2) and Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) values showed that the modified model (R2 = 0.52; NSE = 0.36) gave a slightly better performance compared to the original (R2 = 0.39; NSE = 0.18). Results from this study will be able to aid the government and private agriculture sectors to have an in-depth understanding in managing pesticide usage in agricultural watersheds.

Several semi-analytical algorithms have been developed to estimate the chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and phycocyanin (PC) concentrations in inland waters. This study aimed at identifying the influence of algorithm parameters on the output variables and searching optimal parameter values. The optimal parameters of seven semi-analytical algorithms were applied to estimate the Chl-a and PC concentrations. The absorption coefficient measurements were coupled with pigment measurements to calibrate the algorithm parameters. For sensitivity analysis, the elementary effect test was conducted to analyze the influence of the algorithm parameters. The sensitivity analysis results showed that the parameters in the Y function and specific absorption coefficient were the most sensitive parameters. Then, the parameters were optimized via a single-objective optimization that involved one objective function being minimized and a multi-objective optimization that contained more than one objective function. The single-objective optimization led to substantial errors in absorption coefficients. In contrast, the multi-objective optimization improved the algorithm performance with respect to both the absorption coefficient estimates and pigment concentration estimates. The optimized parameters of the absorption coefficient reflected the high-particulate content in waters of the Baekje reservoir using an infrared backscattering wavelength and relatively high value of Y. Moreover, the results indicate the value of measuring the site-specific absorption if site-specific optimization of semi-analyical algorithm parameters was envisioned.

Estimating the liquid level in an anaerobic digester can be disturbed by its closedness, bubbles and scum formation, and the inhomogeneity of the digestate. In our previous study, a soft-sensor approach using seven pressure meters has been proposed as an alternative for real-time liquid level estimation. Here, machine learning techniques were used to improve the estimation accuracy and optimize the number of sensors required in this approach. Four algorithms, multiple linear regression (MLR), artificial neural network (ANN), random forest (RF), and support vector machine (SVM) with radial basis function kernel were compared for this purpose. All models outperformed the cubic model developed in the previous study, among which the ANN and RF models performed the best. Variable importance analysis suggested that the pressure readings from the top (in the headspace) were the most significant, while the other pressure meters showed varying significance levels depending on the model type. The sensor that experienced both headspace and liquid phases depending on the level variation incurred a higher error than other sensors. The results showed that the ML techniques can provide an effective tool to estimate digester liquid levels by optimizing the number of sensors and reducing the error rate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) have been frequently occurred with releasing toxic substances, which typically lead to water quality degradation and health problems for humans and aquatic animals. Hence, accurate quantitative analysis and prediction of HABs should be implemented to detect, monitor, and manage severe algal blooms. However, the traditional monitoring required sufficient expense and labor while numerical models were restricted in terms of their ability to simulate the algae dynamic. To address the challenging issue, this study evaluates the applicability of deep learning to simulate chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and phycocyanin (PC) with the internet of things (IoT) system. Our research adopted LSTM models for simulating Chl-a and PC. Among LSTM models, the attention LSTM model achieved superior performance by showing 0.84 and 2.35 (µg/L) of the correlation coefficient and root mean square error. Among preprocessing methods, the z-score method was selected as the optimal method to improve model performance. The attention mechanism highlighted the input data from July to October, indicating that this period was the most influential period to model output. Therefore, this study demonstrated that deep learning with IoT system has the potential to detect and quantify cyanobacteria, which can improve the eutrophication management schemes for freshwater reservoirs. Contamination of surface waters through microbiological pollutants is a major concern to public health. Although long-term and high-frequency E. coli monitoring can help prevent diseases from fecal pathogenic microorganisms, this monitoring is time consuming and expensive. Process-driven models are an alternative method for determining fecal pathogenic microorganisms. However, process-based modeling still has limitations in improving the model accuracy because of the complex mechanistic relationships among hydrological and environmental variables. On the other hand, with the rise in data availability and computation power, the use of data-driven models is increasing. Therefore, in this study, we simulated the transport of Escherichia coli (E. coli) in a 0.6 km² tropical headwater catchment located in Lao PDR using a deep learning model and a process-based model. The deep learning model was built using the long short-term memory (LSTM) technique, whereas the process-based model was constructed using the Hydrological Simulation Program-FORTRAN (HSPF). First, we calibrated both models for surface as well as for subsurface flow. Then, we simulated the E. coli transport with 6 min time steps with both the HSPF and LSTM models. The LSTM provided accurate results for surface and subsurface flow, by showing 0.51 and 0.64 of Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE), respectively, whereas the NSE values yielded by the HSPF were -0.7 and 0.59 for surface and subsurface flow. The simulated E. coli concentration from LSTM also improved, yielding an NSE of 0.35, whereas the HSPF showed an unacceptable performance, with an NSE value of -3.01. This is because of the limitation of HSPF in capturing the dynamics of E. coli with land-use change. The simulated E. coli concentration showed rise and drop patterns corresponding to annual changes in land use. This study shows the application of deep learning-based models as an efficient alternative to process-based models for E. coil fate and transport simulation at the catchment scale. Thyroid cancer is the most well-known type of endocrine cancer that is easily treatable and can be completely cured in most cases. Nonetheless, anti-cancer drug-resistant metastasis or recurrence may occur and lead to the failure of cancer therapy, which eventually leads to the death of a patient with cancer. This study aimed to detect novel thyroid cancer target candidates based on validating and identifying one of many anti-cancer drug-resistant targets in patient-derived sorafenib-resistant papillary thyroid cancer (PTC). We focused on targeting the sarco/endoplasmic reticulum calcium ATPase (SERCA) in patient-derived sorafenib-resistant PTC cells compared with patient-derived sorafenib-sensitive PTC cells. We discovered novel SERCA inhibitors (candidates 33 and 36) by virtual screening. These candidates are novel SERCA inhibitors that lead to remarkable tumor shrinkage in a xenograft tumor model of sorafenib-resistant patient-derived PTC cells. These results are clinically valuable for the progression of novel combinatorial strategies that facultatively and efficiently target extremely malignant cancer cells, such as anti-cancer drug-resistant PTC cells.

Land use change from annual crops to commercial tree plantations can modify flow and transport processes at the watershed scale, including the fate and transport of fecal indicator bacteria (FIB), such as Escherichia coli. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) is a useful means for integrating watershed characteristics and simulating water and contaminants. The objective of this study was to provide a comprehensive assessment of the impact of land use change on microbial transfer from soils to streams using the SWAT model. This study was conducted for the Houay Pano watershed located in northern Lao People's Democratic Republic. Under the observed weather conditions, the SWAT model predicted a decrease from 2011 to 2012 and an increase from 2012 to 2013 in surface runoff, suspended solids, and E. coli transferred from the soil surface to streams. The amount of precipitation was important in simulating surface runoff, and it subsequently affected the fate and transport of suspended solids and bacteria. In simulations of identical weather conditions and different land uses, E. coli fate and transport was more sensitive to the initial number of E. coli than to its drivers (i.e., surface runoff and suspended solids), and leaf area index was a significant factor influencing the determination of the initial number of E. coli on the soil surface. On the basis of these findings, this study identifies several limitations of the SWAT fertilizer and bacteria modules and suggests measures to improve our understanding of the impacts of land use change on FIB in tropical watersheds. Microbial contamination in beach water poses a public health threat due to waterborne diseases. To reduce the risk of exposure to fecal contamination, informing beachgoers in advance about the microbial water quality is important. Currently, determining the level of fecal contamination takes 24 h. The objective of this study is to predict the current level of fecal contamination (enterococcus [ENT] and Escherichia coli) using readily available environmental variables. Artificial neural network (ANN) and support vector regression (SVR) models were constructed using data from the Haeundae and Gwangalli Beaches in Busan City. The input variables included the tidal level, air and water temperature, solar radiation, wind direction and velocity, precipitation, discharge from the wastewater treatment plant, and suspended solid concentration in beach water. The dependence of fecal contamination on the input variables was statistically evaluated; precipitation, discharge from the wastewater treatment plant, and wind direction at the two beaches were positively correlated to the changes in the two bacterial concentrations (p < 0.01), whereas solar radiation was negatively correlated (p < 0.01). The performance of the ANN model for predicting ENT and E. coli at Gwangalli Beach was significantly higher than that of the SVR model with the training dataset (p < 0.05). Based on the comparison of residual values between the predicted and observed fecal indicator bacteria concentrations in two models, the ANN demonstrated better performance than SVR. The fate of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in aquatic environments, especially in rivers and reservoirs, is receiving growing attention in South Korea because reservoirs are an important source of drinking water in this country. Seasonal changes in the abundance of 11 ARGs and a mobile genetic element (int1) in two reservoirs in South Korea, located near drinking water treatment plants in Cheonan and Cheongju cities, were monitored for 6 mo. In these drinking water sources, total ARG concentrations reached 2.5 x 107 copies mL-1, which is one order of magnitude higher than in influents of some wastewater treatment plants in South Korea. During the sampling periods in August, October, and November 2016 and January 2017, sulfonamides (sul1), β-lactam antibiotics (blaTEM), and tetracycline (tetA) resistance genes were the most abundant genes at the two sites. The ARG abundance consistently increased in January relative to 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid (rRNA) counts. General stress responses to oxidative stress and other environmental factors associated with the cold season could be significant drivers of ARG horizontal gene transfer in the environment. Water disinfection process in a water treatment process results in the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs), including total trihalomethanes (TTHMs). It takes a relatively long time to estimate TTHMs concentration level in the water treatment plants; thereby it is impossible to timely control operation parameters to reduce the TTHMs concentration. Here, we developed a predictive model to quantify TTHMs concentration using conventional water quality parameters from six water treatment plants in Han River. Before the developing the model, self-organizing map (SOM) and artificial neural network (ANN) restored missing values in input and output parameters. Then, an ANN model was trained to predict TTHMs by using relevant water quality parameters investigated from Pearson correlation. Pearson Correlation test selected six significant input parameters such as temperature, algae, pre-middle chlorine, post chlorine, total chlorine, and total organic carbon. Based on five-fold jackknife cross-validation, the ANN models built using different types of input data showed different performance in training (range of R² from 0.62 to 0.92) and validation (range of R² from 0.62 and 0.80) steps. This study can be a useful tool for predicting TTHMs concentrations using conventional water quality data in drinking water treatment plants. While the size of single low impact development (LID) unit determines the performance in attenuating water quantity and quality from storm runoff, the performance of multiple LID units is sensitive to both their size and arrangement order. This study describes a methodology to obtain the best performance for multiple LID units under varying by time-to-peak of storm with the same intensity and duration using storm water management model (SWMM), a popular model for rainfall-runoff and water quality simulation. The hypothetical temporal distributions were designated by Huff curves, which provided characterizing storm mass curves, along with the relationship of intensity-duration-frequency to determine storm intensity for 1-h in 2-year return period. Three types of LID units (rain barrel, infiltration trench, and vegetative swale) were selected to develop aggregate LID scenarios using the SWMM. The results indicated that, when compared with other field experiments, the SWMM successfully estimated change in flow discharge and suspended solid (SS) loss reflecting different storm patterns at the final outlet of and urbanized sub-catchment as well as the effects of LID practices. The performances of aggregate LID scenarios including lag time of peak runoff, peak runoff reduction, volume reduction, and SS loss reduction were sensitive to arrangement order and time-of-storm peak-to-storm duration. Scenario 5, which had the order of vegetative swale, rain barrel, and infiltration trench, showed the most effective serial arrangement, as it exhibited the more consistent results across the storm patters. Science Walden, which is inspired by two prominent literary works, namely, Walden by Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) and Walden Two by Burrhus Frederic Skinner (1904-1990), is aimed at establishing a community that embodies humanistic values while embracing scientific advancement to produce renewable energy and water sources. This study attempts to capitalize on feces standard money (FSM) and artistic collaboration between scientists and artists as a means of achieving the forms of life depicted in Walden and Walden Two. On our campus, we designed and built a pavilion that serves as a laboratory where scientific advantages, design, and art are merged. In the pavilion, feces are processed in reactors and facilities for sustainable energy production, and rainwater is harvested and treated for use in daily life. Our application of design and art contributes to easing interaction between the general public and scientists because it visualizes an ambiguous theory and concretizes it into an understandable image. Purpose: Renal cell carcinoma is a heterogeneous kidney cancer, and over 403,000 cases were reported worldwide in 2018. Current methods for studying renal cell carcinoma are limited to two-dimensional (2D) culture of primary cell lines and patient-derived xenograft models. Numerous studies have suggested that 2D culture poorly represents the diversity, heterogeneity, and drug-resistance of primary tumors. The time and cost associated with patient-derived xenograft models poses a realistic barrier to their clinical utility. As a biomimetic model, patient-derived three-dimensional (3D) organoid culture can overcome these disadvantages and bridge the gap between in vitro cell culture and in vivo patient-derived xenograft models. Here, we establish a patient-derived 3D organoid culture system for clear cell renal cell carcinoma and demonstrate the biomimetic characteristics of our model with respect to both primary kidney cancer and conventional 2D culture. Materials and Methods: Normal renal tissues and tumor tissues were collected from patients with clear cell renal cell carcinoma. The dissociated cells were cultured as conventional 2D culture and 3D organoid culture. The biomimetic characteristic of the two cultures were compared. Results: Compared with 2D culture, the 3D organoid cultures retained the characteristic lipid-rich, clear cell morphology of clear cell renal cell carcinoma. Carbonic anhydrase 9 and vimentin were validated as biomarkers of renal cell carcinoma. Expression of the two validated biomarkers was more enhanced in 3D organoid culture. Conclusions: Patient-derived 3D organoid culture retains the characteristics of renal cell carcinoma with respect to morphology and biomarker expression.

Thyroid carcinoma, a disease in which malignant cells form in the thyroid tissue, is the most common endocrine carcinoma, with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) accounting for nearly 80% of total thyroid carcinoma cases. However, the management of metastatic or recurrent therapy-refractory PTC is challenging and requires complex carcinoma therapy. In this study, we proposed a new clinical approach for the treatment of therapy-refractory PTC. We identified sarco/endoplasmic reticulum calcium ATPase (SERCA) as an essential factor for the survival of PTC cells refractory to the treatment with paclitaxel or sorafenib. We validated its use as a potential target for developing drugs against resistant PTC, by using patient-derived paclitaxel- or sorafenib-resistant PTC cells. We further discovered novel SERCA inhibitors, candidates 7 and 13, using the evolutionary chemical binding similarity method. These novel SERCA inhibitors determined a substantial reduction of tumors in a patient-derived xenograft tumor model developed using paclitaxel- or sorafenib-resistant PTC cells. These results could provide a basis for clinically meaningful progress in the treatment of refractory PTC by identifying a novel therapeutic strategy: using a combination therapy between sorafenib or paclitaxel and specific SERCA inhibitors for effectively and selectively targeting extremely malignant cells such as antineoplastic-resistant and carcinoma stem-like cells.

Advanced cancer has been shown to be associated with a higher percentage of epigenetic changes than with genetic mutations. Preclinical models have shown that the combination of paclitaxel, sorafenib, and radiation therapy (RT) plays a crucial role in renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and breast cancer. This study aimed to investigate the involvement of mitochondrial cytochrome c–dependent apoptosis in the mechanism of action of a combination of paclitaxel, sorafenib, and RT in RCC and breast cancer. RCC and breast cancer cell lines were exposed to paclitaxel and sorafenib alone or combined in the presence of radiation, and cell viability was determined using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay. The synergistic anticancer effects of the combination therapy on cell cycle and intracellular signaling pathways were estimated using flow cytometry and immunoblot analysis. RCC and breast cancer cell line xenograft models were used to examine the antitumor activity in vivo. Our results suggest that paclitaxel, sorafenib, and RT synergistically decreased the viability of RCC and breast cancer cells and significantly induced their apoptosis, as shown by caspase-3 cleavage. Paclitaxel, sorafenib, and radiation cotreatment reduced antiapoptotic factor levels in these cells and, thereby, significantly reduced the tumor volume of RCC and breast cancer cell xenografts. The current study suggests that paclitaxel, sorafenib, and radiation cotreatment was more effective than cotreatment with paclitaxel or sorafenib and radiation. These findings may offer a new therapeutic approach to RCC and breast cancer.

Drug resistance causes therapeutic failure in refractory cancer. Cancer drug resistance stems from various factors, such as patient heterogeneity and genetic alterations in somatic cancer cells, including those from identical tissues. Generally, resistance is intrinsic for cancers; however, cancer resistance becomes common owing to an increased drug treatment. Unfortunately, overcoming this issue is not yet possible. The present study aimed to evaluate a clinical approach using candidate compounds 19 and 23, which are sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum calcium ATPase (SERCA) inhibitors, discovered using the evolutionary chemical binding similarity method. mRNA sequencing indicated SERCA as the dominant marker of patient-derived anti-cancer drug-resistant hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but not of patient-derived anti-cancer drug-sensitive HCC. Candidate compounds 19 and 23 led to significant tumor shrinkage in a tumor xenograft model of anti-cancer drug-resistant patient-derived HCC cells. Our results might be clinically significant for the development of novel combinatorial strategies that selectively and efficiently target highly malignant cells such as drug-resistant and cancer stem-like cells.

Background To evaluate the success rate of balloon dilation and the factors possibly influencing the outcomes of balloon dilation for the ureteric strictured portion of ureteroureterostomy (UUS) site in patients with post-gynecologic surgeries. Methods A single institution data base was screened for the patients who received balloon dilation for a treatment of ureteral stricture diagnosed after gynecologic surgery. Overall 114 patients underwent primary intra-operative UUS due to ureteral injury during gynecologic surgery. Among them, 102 patients received balloon dilation, and their medical records were retrospectively reviewed. Success of balloon dilation was defined as the condition that requires no further clinical interventions after 6 months from balloon dilation. Results The ureter injury rate of women treated with open radical abdominal hysterectomy was highest (32 cases, 31.4%). 60 patients (60.8%) showed successful outcomes regarding dilation. All patients underwent technically successful dilation with a full expansion of balloon during the procedure, but 40 patients (39.2%) were clinically unsuccessful as they showed a recurrence of ureteral stricture on the previous balloon dilation site after the first dilation procedure. Univariate logistic regression analyses showed that stricture length >2 cm was a significant predictor of successful dilation (odds ratio, 0.751; 95% confidence interval, 0.634-0.901; p-value, 0.030), but it failed to achieve independent predictor status in multivariate analysis. Background: Cancer metastasis is a multi-step event including epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Breast cancer metastasis suppressor 1 (BRMS1) is a novel metastasis suppressor protein without anti-proliferating activity. However, a detailed underlying mechanism by which BRMS1 attenuates cancer cell EMT and invasion remained to be answered. In the present study, we report an additional mechanism by which BRMS1 attenuates Transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-β1)-induced breast cancer cell EMT and invasion.Methods: Experimental analysis involving chromosome immunoprecipitation (ChIP) and luciferase reporter assays were used to validate hypoxia inducible factor-1alpha (HIF-1α) as a transcriptional regulator of TWIST1 and Snail. Quantitative RT-PCR was used to analyze transcript expression. Immunoblotting and immunofluorescence were used to analyze protein expression. Matrigel-coated in vitro invasion insert was used to analyze cancer cell invasion.Results: BRMS1 strongly inhibited TGF-β1-induced breast cancer cell EMT and invasion. Unexpectedly, we observed that BRMS1 downregulates not only TWIST1 but also Snail expression, thereby inhibiting breast cancer cell invasion. In addition, we provide evidence that HIF-1α is required for Snail and TWIST1 expression. Further, BRMS1 reduced TGF-β1-induced HIF-1α transcript expression through inactivation of nuclear factor kappaB (NF-κB).Conclusion: Collectively, the present study demonstrates a mechanical cascade of BRMS1 suppressing cancer cell invasion through downregulating HIF-1α transcript and consequently reducing Snail and TWIST1 expression. The goal of this study was to investigate the optimal pH and temperature allowing enhanced nitrification in communities of nitrifying bacteria in full-scale wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Although maximum nitrification of activated sludge in WWTPs was achieved using similar optimal conditions, nitrification performance was uniquely influenced by simultaneous variations in temperature and pH. These results led to development of different model equations predicting the combined effects of temperature and pH on nitrification rates at WWTPs, reflecting the propensity of nitrifying bacterial communities to flourish under different conditions. Different end products of nitrification resulted not only from certain factors such as pH and temperature, but from differences in proportions of nitrifying bacteria among total bacteria. Therefore, proper adjustment of optimal pH and temperature in nitrifying bacteria communities can provide an implementable approach to improve nitrification performance of WWTPs, incorporating those specific conditions shown to favor the acclimatization of certain nitrifying bacteria. The aim of the present study was to determine whether oncologic outcomes and adverse events associated with active on/off intermittent antiandrogen monotherapy (daily bicalutamide, 50 mg per day) are comparable with those of standard external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) or combined androgen blockade (CAB) therapy in prostate cancers with positive surgical margins after radical prostatectomy. Two hundred twenty-three patients with positive surgical margins post-radical prostatectomy who underwent active surveillance (AS, n = 32), EBRT without hormone therapy (n = 55), intermittent antiandrogen monotherapy without EBRT (IAAM, n = 50), or CAB without EBRT (n = 86), between 2007 and 2014, were reviewed retrospectively. Pathologic outcomes, biochemical recurrence rates, radiological disease progression, and adverse events were collected from medical records. Biochemical recurrence rates, biochemical recurrence-free survival rates, and radiological recurrence were not different between the groups (P = 0.225, 0.896, and 0.284, respectively). Adverse event rates and severities were lower for IAAM compared with EBRT or CAB (both P < 0.05), but were comparable to those for AS (P = 0.591 and 0.990, respectively). Grade ≥3 adverse events were not reported in the IAAM or AS groups. Erectile dysfunction and loss of libido rates were lower in the IAAM group compared with the EBRT and CAB groups (P = 0.032). Gastrointestinal complications were more frequently reported in the EBRT group (P = 0.008). Active on/off IAAM treatment might be an appropriate treatment option for patients with positive surgical margins after radical prostatectomy. Furthermore, regarding oncologic outcomes, IAAM was comparable to standard EBRT but had a milder adverse event profile.

Purpose: C-reactive protein (CRP) has been implicated in various inflammatory and advanced malignant states. Increased serum CRP (s-CRP) levels have been shown to be associated with independent prognostic factors for survival in patients with advanced lung cancer. However, only few studies have focused on the role of CRP in pleural effusions. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic and prognostic value of pleural CRP (p-CRP) in lung cancer patients with malignant pleural effusion (MPE). Materials and Methods: Pleural effusion (PE) samples were collected from patients with MPE (68 lung cancers; 12 extrathoracic tumors), and from 68 patients with various benign conditions (31 with pneumonia; 37 with tuberculosis). Concentrations of p- and s-CRP were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. CRP level in pleural fluid and its association with survival were examined. Results: p-CRP levels correlated with s-CRP levels (r=0.82, p<0.0001). For the differential diagnosis of MPE and benign PE, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was greater for p-CRP (0.86) than for s-CRP (0.77). High p-CRP expression significantly correlated with shorter overall survival (p=0.006). P-CRP was independent prognostic factor significantly associated with overall survival on multivariated analysis (p=0.0001). The relative risk of death for lung cancer patients with high p-CRP levels was 3.909 (95% confidence interval, 2.000-7.639). Conclusion: P-CRP is superior to s-CRP in determining pleural fluid etiology. Quantitative measurement of p-CRP might be a useful complementary diagnostic and prognostic test for lung cancer patients with MPE. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
