Feeding wet distillers grains plus solubles (WDGS) in beef feedlot diets increases beef polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) concentration and decreases shelf-life; whereas feeding antioxidants like vitamin E and Agrado-Plus (AG; an ethoxyquin and tert-Butylhydroquinone mixture) mitigates such effects. The objective of this study was to evaluate shelf-life of beef from steers supplemented with WDGS and different antioxidants. One hundred and sixty steers were finished on a corn-based diet with 0% WDGS or 30% WDGS and four antioxidant treatments (no supplementation; vitamin E only; AG only; vitamin E + AG). Ten strip loins from each treatment were collected, aged, cut into steaks, and placed under retail display (2±2°C). During retail display, steaks were evaluated daily for objective colour and subjective discolouration. After retail display, steaks were used to measure lipid oxidation, muscle fatty acids, and vitamin E and ethoxyquin concentrations. Feeding 30% WDGS increased total PUFA in beef when compared with beef from steers fed 0% WDGS (P < 0.05). Supplementing vitamin E or vitamin E + AG was effective in decreasing myoglobin and lipid oxidation in steaks from steers fed 0% or 30% WDGS after retail display (P < 0.01). Supplementation of vitamin E or AG also increased (P < 0.01) muscle tissue vitamin E or ethoxyquin levels, respectively, compared with the diets without vitamin E or AG supplementation. The inclusion of 30% WDGS altered beef fatty acid profiles, but did not promote lipid and myoglobin oxidation compared with the 0% WDGS diet. Feeding vitamin E was effective, whereas supplementing AG had minor effects in decreasing myoglobin and lipid oxidation in steaks from both diet. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Submesoscale stirring contributes to the cascade of tracer variance from large to small scales. Multiple nested surveys in the summer Sargasso Sea with tow-yo and autonomous platforms captured submesoscale water-mass variability in the seasonal pycnocline at 20-60-m depths. To filter out internal waves that dominate dynamic signals on these scales, spectra for salinity anomalies on isopycnals were formed. Salinity-gradient spectra are approximately flat with slopes of −0.2 ± 0.2 over horizontal wavelengths of 0.03-10 km. While the two to three realizations presented here might be biased, more representative measurements in the literature are consistent with a nearly flat submesoscale passive tracer gradient spectrum for horizontal wavelengths in excess of 1 km. A review of mechanisms that could be responsible for a flat passive tracer gradient spectrum rules out (i) quasigeostrophic eddy stirring, (ii) atmospheric forcing through a relict submesoscale winter mixed layer structure or nocturnal mixed layer deepening, (iii) a downscale vortical-mode cascade, and (iv) horizontal diffusion because of shear dispersion of diapycnal mixing. Internal-wave horizontal strain appears to be able to explain horizontal wavenumbers of 0.1-7 cycles per kilometer (cpkm) but not the highest resolved wavenumbers (7-30 cpkm). Submesoscale subduction cannot be ruled out at these depths, though previous observations observe a flat spectrum well below subduction depths, so this seems unlikely. Primitive equation numerical modeling suggests that nonquasigeostrophic subinertial horizontal stirring can produce a flat spectrum. The last need not be limited to mode-one interior or surface Rossby wavenumbers of quasigeostrophic theory but may have a broaderband spectrum extending to smaller horizontal scales associated with frontogenesis and frontal instabilities as well as internal waves. To analyze whether magnesium has a neuroprotective effect during episodes that indicate a critical brain perfusion after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH).

The interaction of barotropic tidal currents and baroclinic geostrophic eddies is considered theoretically and numerically to determine whether energy can be transferred to an internal wave field by this process. The eddy field evolves independently of the tide, suggesting that it acts catalytically in facilitating energy transfer from the barotropic tide to the internal wave field, without exchanging energy with the other flow components. The interaction is identically zero and no waves are generated when the barotropic tidal current is horizontally uniform. Optimal internal wave generation occurs when the scales of tide and eddy fields satisfy resonant conditions. The most efficient generation is found if the tidal current horizontal scale is comparable to that of the eddies, with a weak maximum when the scales differ by a factor of two. Thus, this process is not an effective mechanism for internal wave excitation in the deep ocean, where tidal current scales are much larger than those of eddies, but it may provide an additional source of internal waves in coastal areas where horizontal modulation of the tide by topography can be significant. Floodplain restoration changes the nitrate delivery pattern and dissolved organic matter pool in backwaters, though the effects these changes have are not yet well known. We performed two mesocosm experiments on flood- plain sediments to quantify the nitrate metabolism in two types of floodplains. Rates of denitrification, dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) and anammox were measured using 15N-NO3 tracer additions in mesocosms of undisturbed floodplain sediments originating from (1) restored and (2) disconnected sites in the Alluvial Zone National Park on the Danube River downstream of Vienna, Austria. DNRA rates were an order of magnitude lower than denitrification and neither rate was affected by changes in nitrate delivery pattern or organic matter quality. Anammox was not detected at any of the sites. Denitrification was out-competed by assimilation, which was estimated to use up to 70% of the available nitrate. Overall, denitrification was higher in the restored sites, with mean rates of 5.7±2.8mmol N m-2 h-1 compared to the disconnected site (0.6±0.5mmol N m-2 h-1). In addition, ratios of N2O:N2 were lower in the restored site indicating a more complete denitrification. Nitrate addition had neither an effect on denitrification, nor on the N2O:N2 ratio. However, DOM (dissolved organic matter) quality significantly changed the N2O:N2 ratio in both sites. Addition of riverine-derived organic matter lowered the N2O:N2 ratio in the disconnected site, whereas addition of floodplain-derived organic matter increased the N2O:N2 ratio in the restored site. These results demonstrate that increasing floodplains hydrological connection to the main river channel increases nitrogen retention and decreases nitrous oxide emissions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Finescale vertical wavenumber strain spectra (strain: normalized buoyancy frequency variability or vertical derivative of isopycnal displacement) are consistently less steep than shear spectra (shear: vertical derivative of horizontal velocity) for vertical wavelengths smaller than several tens of meters. Interpreting the diminished ratio of shear to strain (shear/strain ≡ horizontal kinetic/available potential energy) at higher vertical wavenumber as due to a greater contribution from high-frequency internal waves is not consistent with extant internal wave-wave interaction theories. A contribution from low-aspect-ratio subinertial density fine structure (flattened structures referred to herein as vortical modes) is therefore hypothesized. Vertical wavenumber spectra for vortical mode shear and strain are inferred from the observed spectra. Observed correlations between shear squared and buoyancy frequency squared exist that cannot be explained by either linear internal waves or geostrophic vortical modes. A model of internal wave-vortical mode interactions is used to interpret the observed correlations and partition the finescale spectra into internal wave and vortical mode components. A simple Doppler shift model is used with current meter data to refine the partitioning. The inferred vortical modes have an aspect ratio of approximately f/N ( f : Coriolis frequency, N: buoyancy frequency), an rms velocity of 0.7 cm s[SUP-1], and bandwidth-limited gradient spectra. At vertical wavelengths larger than 30 m the vortical modes are inferred to be quasi-geostrophic and in thermal wind balance. The data are interpreted as exhibiting an approximate equipartition between waves and vortical modes at vertical wavelengths smaller than 10 m. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The histogenesis of primary nonurachal mucus-producing adenocarcinomas of the urinary bladder including signet ring cell carcinomas remains to be elucidated, since the normal bladder contains neither columnar nor mucus-secreting glandular epithelium. Based upon the assumption that adenocarcinomas may develop secondarily from pre-existent transitional cell carcinomas (TCC) by a metaplastic process, it was the purpose of the current immunohistochemical study to analyze whether urothelial carcinomas are capable of secreting MUC5AC apomucin, using the monoclonal antibody 45MI. This antibody has been initially demonstrated to strongly react with the mucus-producing columnar cells of the surface gastric epithelium, recognizing a specific epitope located on the peptide core of glycoproteins as major components of mucins. Nine of 64 uniformly differentiated papillary (14.1%) and 5 of 66 nonpapillary (solid) TCC with a uniform urothelial differentiation (7.6%) expressed the MUC5AC antigen, yielding an overall incidence of 10.8%. Transitional cell carcinomas with a focally altered cellular and structural differentiation (squamous cell, pseudoglandular, true glandular and mixed differentiation) stained positively in a substantially higher percentage of 43.8% (21 of 48 cases). A positive immunoreactivity was also observed in 3 of 19 mixed transitional cell and nonurothelial carcinomas. The tumor-associated resurgence of normally cryptic MUC5AC antigenic determinants in transitional cell carcinomas is considered as a re-expression of oncofetal antigenicity, probably as a result of the embryologic origin of the urinary bladder from the pluripotent tissues of the cloacal endoderm and the mesodermal wolffian ducts. Our findings may help to better understand the histogenetic development of mucus-secreting vesical adenocarcinomas from pre-existent urothelial carcinomas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
