Nanofiltration (NF) of waste water originated from nanofiltration drinking water plant stationed in town of Kikinda (Northern Serbia) was investigated. Experiments on removal characteristics of nanofiltration membranes when exposed to influent rich in arsenic and natural organic matter under different flux and transmembrane pressure (TMP) conditions were conducted in order to obtain drinking water from waste water and reduce total amount of waste water. Applied NF membranes showed remarkable removal characteristic. Also, obtained result for concentrate yield, an indicator of reduced concentrate amount, of 8.89% under optimum flux value presents considerable amount of reclamated drinking water. Calculated empirical and theoretical concentration factors quotients were indicated to probable accumulation of some inlet water components at NF membrane surface. Based on the obtained results that nanofiltration membranes remove natural organic matter, arsenic, ammonia and sodium with high efficiencies of 98%, 96%, 80% and 93% respectively, conceptual design of drinking water plant for City of Kikinda was defined and presented.

Waterworks conditions in the Republic of Serbia were discussed in the paper with a special note to the usage of membrane processes. Nano filtration process and its application were reviewed. Potential solutions for clean drinking water distribution was given. Also, alternative solutions such as cisterns, existing wells and springs, small home filtration elements and Public wells with purified water were presented.

Suitability of polysulfone ultrafiltration membranes (UFM) commercial designed for water treatment have been investigated for separation of protein (PR) from sweet whey. Ultrafiltration (UF) of whey originated from dairy has been realized by self-made pilot plant which has been in service about one year. Influence of two whey temperatures (9 oC and 30 oC) on efficiency of protein concentration has been examined. Application of investigated UF elements has given whey protein concentrate (WPC) with 5 to 6 times excess amount of protein content in regard to starting one. In the same time the prevalent content of lactose has been removed to permeate. Better results have been occurred during the cold whey filtration. Besides the fact that molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) of investigated membranes were 50-100 kDa, results showed very successful concentrating of whey proteins of dominantly lower molar weights than 50-100 kDa. Investigated membranes are beneficial for design and construction of UF plants for exploitation in small dairies.
