Associational effects such as "associational resistance" or "aposematic commensalism" may facilitate the subsequent evolution of mimicry. However, such effects are usually expected to be contingent on a spatiotemporal co-occurrence of defended and undefended species. Associational resistance may emerge in communities of larval anurans where tadpoles of different species share a generalized morphology but vary in chemical defences. In Europe, the marsh frog Pelophylax ridibundus reproduces in fish-containing habitats that earlier in the season can be used by the common toad Bufo bufo, a species with chemically defended larvae. In a mesocosm experiment, we investigated if the associational protection against predation provided by the defended species could be strong enough to last even after the defended prey metamorphose and leave the system. We expected that the higher abundances (both absolute and relative) of chemically defended B. bufo in the tadpole assemblage exposed to predation by the common carp Cyprinus carpio prior to the occurrence of P. ridibundus tadpoles would be related to the increased later survival of P. ridibundus in the presence of the same fish. The tadpoles of P. ridibundus were highly vulnerable to predation during a 2-week cohabitation with fish. We found no relationship between the survival of P. ridibundus and the absolute density or relative proportion of B. bufo. Although associational effects may be ecologically relevant in aquatic animal communities, they apparently require the co-presence of the defended prey in fish-tadpole interactions. Many chemically defended aposematic species are characterized by relatively low toxin levels, which enables predators to include them in their diets under certain circumstances. Knowledge of the conditions governing the survival of such prey animals—especially in the context of the co‐occurrence of similar but undefended prey, which may result in mimicry‐like interactions—is crucial for understanding the initial evolution of aposematism. In a one‐month outdoor experiment using fish (the common carp Cyprinus carpio) as predators, we examined the survival of moderately defended aposematic tadpole prey (the European common toad Bufo bufo) with varying absolute densities in single‐species prey systems or varying relative densities in two‐species prey systems containing morphologically similar but undefended prey (the European common frog Rana temporaria). The density effects were investigated in conjunction with the hunger levels of the predator, which were manipulated by means of the addition of alternative (nontadpole) food. The survival of the B. bufo tadpoles was promoted by increasing their absolute density in the single‐species prey systems, increasing their relative density in the two‐species prey systems, and providing ample alternative food for the predator. Hungry predators eliminated all R. temporaria individuals regardless of their proportion in the prey community; in treatments with ample alternative food, high relative B. bufo density supported R. temporaria survival. The results demonstrated that moderately defended prey did benefit from high population densities (both absolute and relative), even under long‐term predation pressure. However, the physiological state of the predator was a crucial factor in the survival of moderately defended prey. While the availability of alternative prey in general should promote the spread and maintenance of aposematism, the results indicated that the resemblance between the co‐occurring defended and undefended prey may impose mortality costs on the defended model species, even in the absence of actual mimicry. Freshwater species with complex life cycles face a trade‐off between the risks of offspring mortality due to desiccation in temporary habitats and due to predators common in long‐duration habitats, especially fish. In real‐world conditions, intermediate‐gradient areas that are highly suitable for some ecological specialists are often limited. I examined the relative significance of drivers of the permanence–predation gradient in habitat selection by pond‐breeding anurans.Anuran oviposition was investigated at the community level in fish pond landscapes with only three types of habitat, permanent fish‐containing ponds and highly desiccation‐prone pools, either fishless or recently emptied of fish and with fish odour (fish cue). Altogether, 65 ponds/pools, interspersed in four clusters, were examined for the presence of egg masses.Bufo bufo was the only species preferring permanent ponds. Egg masses of Rana sp. (Rana arvalis/Rana temporaria) occurred in all fishless pools, and less frequently in the ponds. Bufotes viridis and long larval period species Pelobates fuscus and Hyla orientalis oviposited almost exclusively in fishless pools. Fish‐cue pools were avoided by all species. Anuran richness was higher in fishless pools than in permanent ponds. Species distribution between the two habitats was nested, with both common and rare species occurring in fishless pools.The results indicate the primacy of offspring predation risk over hydroperiod constraints in oviposition decision‐making by fish‐intolerant anurans. The absence of some species from ponds and pools with fish or fish cues shows that non‐consumptive interactions may better explain the scarcity of anuran larvae in waters dominated by fish than actual consumption. The strict avoidance of fish habitats despite their proximity to fishless patches indicates fine‐scale assessment of predation risk. However, rigid habitat selection against fish predation on offspring may prove maladaptive if habitats with high desiccation risk are the main alternative and are indiscriminately preferred. Maintenance of fishless wetlands with a hydroperiod sufficient to allow completion of metamorphosis should be a conservation priority for anuran diversity in areas where fishless habitats are limited. Between-habitat distributions of prey shared by multiple predators depend on habitat use by the predators, whose own distributions may interact. We used a large-scale, whole-system natural experiment to examine distributions of anuran tadpoles and insect predators between pond microhabitats with contrasting complexity (open water vs emergent littoral vegetation) in drainable ponds that were either kept fishless or stocked with fish. Total relative densities of insect predators did not significantly differ with respect to the fish status of the ponds. Individual anuran taxa responded variously, but only fish-tolerant Bufo bufo densities were higher in the presence of fish. The densities of both insect predators and tadpoles showed positive interactions between fish presence and the use of complex littoral habitat. The habitat shift to littoral vegetation could be indirectly amplified by fish adverse impact on submerged macrophytes, the main structured microhabitat in open-water areas. Irrespective of mechanisms of fish effects (direct consumption, behavioral deterrence or alteration of habitat conditions), aggregation of both tadpoles and insect predators in littoral vegetation may put tadpoles at greater risk of predation by insects, a potentially important factor of amphibian mortality in waters containing fish. Summary: From 1995 to 1998 seven cases of prolonged incubation of unhatchable eggs by Red-necked Grebes (Podiceps grisegena) were observed in south east Poland, all of relatively constant duration (34–36 days). The regular occurrence of prolonged incubation can be attributed to low hatchability rates. It is argued that the failure in assessment of the current egg viability is a by-product of excessive nest attendance as a primary adaptation to irregularities in hatching spreads. Amphibians are highly sensitive to environmental changes such as climate warming. Here, we report unusually early oviposition in two spatially isolated urban subpopulations of the green toad Bufotes viridis Laurenti, 1768, in Poznań, Western Poland. To our knowledge, we report the earliest breeding date for Central and Eastern Europe, for areas of similar latitude. We ascribe the early onset of B. viridis reproduction to an exceptionally warm spring in Western Poland in 2017. B. viridis shows flexibility in the timing of reproductive activity, however, shifts in breeding phenology may have both beneficial and detrimental population consequences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fish may influence habitat selection and reproductive success in waterfowl. We investigated the effects of common carp Cyprinus carpio on breeding coots Fulica atra along a gradient of fish size structure and density, created by separate stocking of age cohorts in ponds in eastern Poland. Coot breeding densities were higher on ponds with low biomass of small-sized, young-of-the-year fish than on ponds with medium- or large-sized fish, stocked at high biomass densities; they also increased with increasing submerged vegetation biomass (an effect correlated with water transparency) and emergent vegetation cover. Densities of nektonic and epibenthic macroinvertebrates and of amphibian larvae were also negatively influenced by fish size/density gradient, while densities of emerging insects were not affected. However, coot breeding success per pair was similar among pond types, while positively related to submerged vegetation, indicating that either plant food abundance was more important than the overall trophic impact of fish or fledgling production was additionally limited by factors other than food. Carp may adversely affect pond habitats of waterfowl both via trophic interactions and through abiotic disturbance of ecosystem processes. Animals confronted with the threat of the death of their offspring may exhibit unusual and risk-prone behaviours. Grebes (Podicipediformes) are water birds which cannot effectively walk, thus unfledged young are assumed to be unable to depart from their natal ponds by land. We provide evidence that red-necked grebes Podiceps grisegena, breeding on ponds with scarce food resources, transferred their flightless young (2-4 weeks old) to other, unconnected ponds by land or air. Although a large proportion of breeding grebes in the study area nested on food-poor fish ponds acting as ecological traps, where they suffered significant brood losses, brood movements to new ponds accounted for only 3.3% of such breeding attempts. The infrequency of this strategy may be explained by the lack of suitable territories in close proximity and the high risk of predation or fatal injury. The means of chick transfer remains unclear; the chicks may have followed or been carried by parents shuffling across the pond levees; alternatively, parents may have carried the young on their backs in flight. To identify optimal habitat for the Aquatic Warbler Acrocephalus paludicola, a flagship species of fen mires, we related numbers of singing males to habitat variables in all core breeding sites in eastern Poland. The density of male Aquatic Warblers increased with increasing ground cover by water and mosses and litter layer height, and was highest where vegetation was 60-90 cm tall. Male densities also increased with the biomass of arthropods > 10 mm length, estimated by sweep netting, and with the abundance of spiders, estimated by pan trapping. We suggest that habitat management should take into account species-specific morphological adaptations, nest safety and arthropod productivity. Prevention of vegetation succession is a conservation priority for open fen mires. However, modern management practices to achieve this, especially mowing using tracked vehicles, should be evaluated and optimized to ensure that such practices do not adversely affect the long-term development of moss cover and litter structure. Common carp, a fish species blamed for profound adverse impacts on invaded freshwater ecosystems, can reach a large body size. We investigated the effects of carp size on water quality and on abundance of submerged macrophytes, zooplankton, and benthic macroinvertebrates in drainable ponds. Each pond was stocked with one of three age-classes of carp (young-of-the-year, 1-year-, and 2-year-old fish) corresponding to specific size ranges (classified as small, medium, and large carp). Water turbidity and chlorophyll a concentrations increased over time in the presence of all sizes of carp; ponds containing medium-sized fish tended to be most turbid. Submerged macrophyte biomass was not significantly affected by fish size. Neither total zooplankton nor macrobenthos biomass differed between ponds stocked with different-sized carp, but fish size was significant in determining the size composition of these communities. Copepods and small-bodied cladocerans were least abundant in the presence of small carp, while large cladoceran grazers were most suppressed in ponds with medium-sized fish. Among dipterans (primarily chironomids), which dominated the macrobenthos, densities of small larvae did not differ across fish sizes, while large larvae were more abundant in ponds stocked with small carp than in those with larger fish. Our results highlight the importance of fish body size in structuring aquatic communities, although the effects need not be linearly related to fish size. We caution against considering the effects of omnivorous fish on lower trophic levels to be unstructured and extrapolating the experimental results from one size range (developmental stage) to others. The freshwater habitats of semi-aquatic carnivores in Europe have undergone substantial alterations due to regulation and construction of artificial watercourses. We compared seasonal estimates of otter Lutra lutra food composition with concomitantly collected data on fish availability and otter holt location in a strongly human-modified ecosystem comprising the upper stretches of the Wieprz-Krzna Canal, the longest artificial waterway in Poland, and an associated regulated river. Concrete lining of the canal, extreme water level variation and regular vegetation clearance to enhance water flow substantially limited otter food and shelter resources, yet the canal offered attractive habitats for some fish and hibernating amphibians, while otter resting sites were available at the closely adjacent river. The taxonomic composition of fish in the otter diet, reconstructed based on faecal analysis, was largely reflected in electrofishing catches. Fish communities in our study area were numerically dominated by small-sized species and otters fed on very small fish (median seasonal total lengths: 46-54 mm). Either the smaller fish in the population were taken or prey sizes did not differ from those available. The significant contribution of amphibians and waterbirds to otter diet (seasonally 41-75% in terms of biomass) indicated poor fish supplies for otters in the canal-river system. High trophic diversity, compared to other otter studies in temperate climatic conditions, indicates that otters facing unstable food conditions exhibit great flexibility in their diet, which may facilitate colonisation of anthropogenic, depauperate environments. Otter occurrence provides little opportunity for conflict with human economic interests in ecosystems that are highly managed for purposes other than fish production. Since anthropogenic habitats are typically poor in some resources, such as shelter structures, their suitability for otters can be enhanced by ensuring good connectivity with nearby less-disturbed habitats, where the necessary resources can be supplemented. The article the use of natural seasonal marshes by 12 common waterbirds in Doñana National Park (DNP) and Veta la Palma fish ponds in south-west Spain. The study shows that changes in the extent of flooded marshes within DNP affects the changes in distribution of each bird taxon. Moreover, the number of ducks at VLP decline when water levels in DNP are stable during winter.

Simple Summary: There are still many unknowns in the development of the skeleton in birds. Traditionally, the neck vertebrae were considered to be the first ossifying elements in the spine. Later studies have shown that this is not always the case. In some species, the thoracic vertebrae ossify even before them. Evolutionary analyses indicate that ancestrally the spine starts ossifying from two different sites, one located in the neck, the other in the thorax. However, the Neoaves, a group that includes all living birds except the palaeognaths, landfowl and waterfowl, are very poorly studied. In this article, we review the information about ossification patterns of the spine in birds. We also describe its development in three neoavians, the pigeon and two grebes. In the pigeon, the neck vertebrae were the first to ossify, but in the grebe, the thoracic vertebrae ossified earlier. Our analyses confirm the ancestral presence of two sites from which the ossification of the spine starts in birds. Despite many decades of studies, our knowledge of skeletal development in birds is limited in many aspects. One of them is the development of the vertebral column. For many years it was widely believed that the column ossifies anteroposteriorly. However, later studies indicated that such a pattern is not universal in birds and in many groups the ossification starts in the thoracic rather than cervical region. Recent analyses suggest that two loci, located in the cervical and thoracic vertebrae, were ancestrally present in birds. However, the data on skeletal development are very scarce in the Neoaves, a clade that includes approximately 95% of extant species. We review the available information about the vertebral column development in birds and describe the ossification pattern in three neoavians, the domestic pigeon (Columba livia domestica), the great crested grebe (Podiceps cristatus) and the red-necked grebe (Podiceps grisegena). In P. cristatus, the vertebral column starts ossifying in the thoracic region. The second locus is present in the cervical vertebrae. In the pigeon, the cervical vertebrae ossify before the thoracics, but both the thoracic and cervical loci are present. Our ancestral state reconstructions confirm that both these loci were ancestrally present in birds, but the thoracic locus was later lost in psittacopasserans and at least some galloanserans. Brood reduction in Red-necked Grebes Podiceps grisegena breeding on fish ponds in south-eastern Poland occurred either through the desertion of the last-laid eggs after partial hatching of the clutch and/or the selective starvation of the smallest chicks. Abandonment of unhatched eggs was not influenced by the number of young already hatched or by the breeding date, but it was more likely in larger clutches and in families suffering chick starvation. Chicks from the largest broods had a higher probability of survival until fledging than those from single-chick broods. Larger chicks obtained food more successfully through better positioning during food delivery. In families that did not suffer brood reduction, chicks were better provisioned with food than in reduced broods. Although allocation of food among chicks in reduced broods was more skewed to the disadvantage of the younger siblings, dominant chicks obtained less food prior to brood reduction than dominant siblings in unreduced broods. Sibling aggression did not differ between unreduced and reduced broods before death of the weakest chicks. Post-laying adjustment of the number of offspring to prevailing feeding conditions occurred at two stages: by parental manipulation of the number of hatched eggs at the time when parents and chicks leave the nest and by competition between chicks. It is suggested that late egg desertion may be an adaptive mechanism of brood-size adjustment, when elimination of the weakest chicks through sibling competition is not very efficient. • Chironomids were the most numerous invertebrates in the ponds bottom sediments. • Two species dominated: Chironomus riparius and C. plumosus. • Low fish biomass ponds had higher chironomid larvae density than high fish biomass ponds. • Diversity was higher in ponds with high fish biomass than with low fish biomass. • The larvae abundance and diversity was declining in summer independent of fish status. Fish may affect macrobenthic communities through trophic interactions and modification of habitat conditions. We compared the density, diversity and taxonomic composition of larval chironomids under low vs high fish impact, created by stocking semi-natural ponds with either young/small common carp Cyprinus carpio at low biomass densities or with high biomass densities of older/large common carp, supplemented by other cyprinids and predatory fish species. Over the study season, May–August, total chironomid abundance was considerably lower in ponds with high fish biomass than in low fish biomass ponds. In July–August larval densities declined significantly, irrespective of the fish status of the ponds. The composition of larval communities diverged between ponds with different fish status. Chironomus riparius and C. plumosus accounted for most of the observed dissimilarity. C. plumosus densities were not affected by the fish status of the pond, constituting on average >38 % of chironomid specimens in both types of ponds. C. riparius was abundant in ponds with low fish biomass (on average 30 %), but rare in ponds with high fish biomass (4 %). Other common taxa were Glyptotendipes pallens (15 % and 13 %, respectively) and Procladius sp. (14 % in ponds with low fish impact). Canonical correspondence analysis showed that fish biomass was more important in determining chironomid community composition than environmental variables indicative of pond eutrophication (total N, P, chlorophyll a and conductivity). Despite adverse effects on total abundance, chironomid diversity was higher under apparently stronger trophic pressure by fish. Fish may have relieved some chironomid species from invertebrate predation and competition with dominant Chironomus larvae. Other important drivers of chironomid assemblage and diversity patterns may include species-specific feeding modes and prey size selectivity of fish, the ability of chironomid larvae to attain size- and depth-refuge from small fish but not larger fish, and differential vulnerability of free-living and tube-dwelling larvae relative to ontogenetic niche shifts of fish.
