Abstract

Newly synthesized cerium oxide was successfully obtained by the hard templating route. The optimal As(III) and As(V) adsorption onto the studied adsorbent was reached for the initial pH of 4.0 and a contact time of 10 h. The highest static adsorption capacities for As(III) and As(V) were 92 mg g−1 and 66 mg g−1, respectively. The pseudo-second-order model was well fitted to the As(III) and As(V) experimental kinetics data. The Langmuir model described the As(III) and As(V) adsorption isotherms on synthesized material. The adsorption mechanism of the studied ions onto the synthesized cerium oxide was complex and should be further investigated. The optimal solid–liquid ratio during the proposed aqueous extraction of inorganic As from the Fucus vesiculosus algae was 1:50. The optimal dosage of the synthesized cerium oxide (0.06 g L−1) was successfully applied for the first time for inorganic As removal from the aqueous algal extract.

Abstract

The present article reports the easy to use approach on the application of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) for the enhancement of drug release from mesoporous acrylic resin, in which a water insoluble drug is embedded. The investigated system combines the swelling of polymer with gelation of silica precursor within the polymer matrix. The nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory naproxen was used as a model drug and Amberlite XAD7HP was used as a drug carrier. Tetraethoxysilane was introduced into the loaded polymer up to the total pore filling. The transformation of tetraethoxysilane in aqueous solution at different pH produces condensed silica and ethanol which is a good solvent of naproxen. Appearance of ethanol in the sample facilitates naproxen release into an external solution at differentiated pH. The rate of release strongly depends on the pH of release solution due to differences in the hydrolysis and gelation rates of tetraethoxysilane. The addition of tetraethoxysilane to the polymer-naproxen composite appears beneficial for drug transport into the external media.

Abstract

Specialized laboratory evaluation of supraventricular tachycardia in children may occur, but the utility is unknown. The study objectives are to assess the type, frequency, and results of specialized laboratory testing performed in pediatric patients presenting with new-onset supraventricular tachycardia. We hypothesized that when specialized laboratory testing occurs (particularly for cardiac failure, toxicologic, inflammatory, and thyroid diseases), the results are generally within normal limits.This is a retrospective descriptive study using an electronic health record database (TriNetX, Inc). We collected and evaluated the following data of subjects aged younger than 18 years with a first-time supraventricular tachycardia diagnosis: demographics, diagnostic codes, deaths, and laboratory codes/results (natriuretic peptide B, natriuretic peptide B prohormone N-terminal, troponin I, toxicology testing, inflammatory markers, and thyroid studies).A total of 621 subjects (524 [84.4%] without laboratory testing, 97 [15.6%] with laboratory testing) were included. Thyroid studies (65 [10.5%]) were the most frequent laboratory study performed followed by cardiovascular specific studies (35 [5.6%]), inflammatory markers (21 [3.4%]), and toxicology tests (10 [1.6%]) (P = .002). Obtained laboratory testing was more frequent with older subjects, females, and need for emergency, hospital, and critical care services.Cardiac-specific and noncardiac laboratory testing is frequently ordered for pediatric patients who present with supraventricular tachycardia. Thyroid studies were the most common laboratory testing ordered, but abnormal results only occurred in less than a quarter of subjects. These findings may highlight a quality improvement opportunity for emergency nurses and practitioners in the practice of obtaining laboratory tests to better reflect high-value evidence-based care for this vulnerable population.

Abstract

This article concerns the assessment of the Republic of Poland (1918–1939) creation — as a political unit — by Paweł Jasienica — not only an outstanding historical essayist and philosopher of history but also an eyewitness of the events described. In 1967, in the retreat of his own room, he wrote his Polish Experience to be edited in the British periodical „Journal of Contemporary History” — hence off censorship — totally devoted to the problem of the birth of the independent Polish entity.A dominating theme in Jasienica’s analysis is the Polish path to independence, connected with the objection to the partitioners’ voluntarism and struggle for borders mainly with its eastern neighbour country — Bolshevik Russia. P. Jasienica proves that independent Poland defended its existence thanks to fast and widespread social reforms as well as full democratisation of political life. Polish society mass participation in Polish-Bolshevik war 1920 and its successful outcome was caused also by the fear of Soviets’ „red terror”.

Abstract

The dynamics of n-heptane adsorption and desorption on two silicas (Si-A and SBA-15) with different porosity was studied using positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS). Simplified method of spectra analysis consisting in the summation of counts in the long-lived part of PALS spectra was used. It allowed to observe changes occurring in the minute time scale. The dependence of the number of counts on time could be fairly well approximated by exponential functions. It was found that the time required for reaching equilibrium in long cylindrical pores is up to ten times longer than in bell-mouthed interconnected ones. The longest time constants (ca. 5 min in Si-A and ca. 60 min in SBA-15) were observed for desorption in both samples.
