Human shape spaces have been extensively studied, as they are a core element of human shape and pose inference tasks. Classic methods for creating a human shape model register a surface template mesh to a database of 3D scans and use dimensionality reduction techniques, such as Principal Component Analysis, to learn a compact representation. While these shape models enable global shape modifications by correlating anthropometric measurements with the learned subspace, they only provide limited localized shape control. We instead register a volumetric anatomical template, consisting of skeleton bones and soft tissue, to the surface scans of the CAESAR database. We further enlarge our training data to the full Cartesian product of all skeletons and all soft tissues using physically plausible volumetric deformation transfer. This data is then used to learn an anatomically constrained volumetric human shape model in a self‐supervised fashion. Planetesimals – asteroids and comets – are the building blocks of planets in protoplanetary discs and the source of dust, ice, and gas in debris discs. Along with planets they comprise the left-over material after star formation that constitutes a planetary system. Planets influence the dynamics of planetesimals, sculpting the orbits of debris belts to produce asymmetries or gaps. We can constrain the architecture of planetary systems, and infer the presence of unseen planetary companions, by high spatial resolution imaging of debris discs. HD 16743 is a relatively young F-type star that hosts a bright edge-on debris disc. Based on far-infrared Herschel observations its disc was thought to be stirred by a planetary companion. Here, we present the first spatially resolved observations at near-infrared and millimetre wavelengths with HST and ALMA, revealing the disc to be highly inclined at |$87{_{.}^{\circ}} 3~^{+1{_{.}^{\circ}} 9}_{-2{_{.}^{\circ}} 5}$| with a radial extent of 157.7 |$^{+2.6}_{-1.5}$| au and an full width at half maximum of 79.4 |$^{+8.1}_{-7.8}$| au (Δ R / R  = 0.5). The vertical scale height of the disc is 0.13 ± 0.02, significantly greater than typically assumed unstirred value of 0.05, and could be indicative of stirring of the dust-producing planetesimals within the disc by bodies at least a few times the mass of Pluto up to 18.3 M⊕ in the single object limit. Vega is the prototypical debris disc system. Its architecture has been extensively studied at optical to millimetre wavelengths, revealing a near face-on, broad, and smooth disc with multiple distinct components. Recent millimetre-wavelength observations from ALMA spatially resolved the inner edge of the outer, cold planetesimal belt from the star for the first time. Here we present early science imaging observations of the Vega system with the AzTEC instrument on the 32-m LMT, tracing extended emission from the disc out to 150 au from the star. We compare the observations to three models of the planetesimal belt architecture to better determine the profile of the outer belt. A comparison of these potential architectures for the disc does not significantly differentiate between them with the modelling results being similar in many respects to the previous ALMA analysis, but differing in the slope of the outer region of the disc. The measured flux densities are consistent between the LMT (single dish) and ALMA (interferometric) observations after accounting for the differences in wavelength of observation. The LMT observations suggest the outer slope of the planetesimal belt is steeper than was suggested in the ALMA analysis. This would be consistent with the interferometric observations being mostly blind to structure at the disc outer edges, but the overall low signal to noise of the LMT observations does not definitively resolve the structure of the outer planetesimal belt. The Nearby Evolved Stars Survey (NESS) is a volume-complete sample of ∼850 Galactic evolved stars within 3 kpc at (sub-)mm wavelengths, observed in the CO J  = (2–1) and (3–2) rotational lines, and the sub-mm continuum, using the James Clark Maxwell Telescope and Atacama Pathfinder Experiment. NESS consists of five tiers, based on distances and dust-production rate (DPR). We define a new metric for estimating the distances to evolved stars and compare its results to Gaia EDR3. Replicating other studies, the most-evolved, highly enshrouded objects in the Galactic Plane dominate the dust returned by our sources, and we initially estimate a total DPR of 4.7 × 10−5 M⊙ yr−1 from our sample. Our sub-mm fluxes are systematically higher and spectral indices are typically shallower than dust models typically predict. The 450/850 |$\mu$| m spectral indices are consistent with the blackbody Rayleigh–Jeans regime, suggesting a large fraction of evolved stars have unexpectedly large envelopes of cold dust. Variable stars in the compact elliptical galaxy M32 are identified, using three epochs of photometry from the Spitzer Space Telescope at 3.6 and 4.5  μ m, separated by 32 to 381 d. We present a high-fidelity catalogue of sources detected in multiple epochs at both 3.6 and 4.5  μ m, which we analysed for stellar variability using a joint probability error-weighted flux difference. Of these, 83 stars are identified as candidate large-amplitude, long-period variables, with 28 considered high-confidence variables. The majority of the variable stars are classified as asymptotic giant branch star candidates using colour-magnitude diagrams. We conducted CO J =1→0 emission line observations for nearby AGB stars using the Nobeyama 45 m telescope. Comparing our results with those from CO J =3→2 observations with JCMT, the circumstellar envelopes observed in CO J =1→0 look more extended than J =3→2. Thus, we could trace the outer, cold parts of the envelopes. We also found four stars in which the CO/13CO ratio changes dramatically outward, but the change implies the effect of selective photodissociation by interstellar ultraviolet radiation, not the third dredge up in the stellar interior. The tori around active galactic nuclei (AGN) are potential formation sites for large amounts of dust, and they may help resolve the so-called dust budget crisis at high redshift. We investigate the dust composition in 53 of the 87 Palomar Green (PG) quasars showing the 9.7 μ m silicate feature in emission. By simultaneously fitting the mid-infrared spectroscopic features and the underlying continuum, we estimate the mass fraction in various amorphous and crystalline dust species. We find that the dust consists predominantly of alumina and amorphous silicates, with a small fraction in crystalline form. The mean crystallinity is 8 ± 6%, with more than half of the crystallinities greater than 5%, well above the upper limit determined for the Galaxy. The Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on the Spitzer Space Telescope observed nearly 800 point sources in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), taking over 1000 spectra. 197 of these targets were observed as part of the SAGE-Spec Spitzer Legacy program; the remainder are from a variety of different calibration, guaranteed time and open time projects.We classify these point sources into types according to their infrared spectral features, continuum and spectral energy distribution shape, bolometric luminosity, cluster membership and variability information, using a decision-tree classification method.We then refine the classification using supplementary information from the astrophysical literature. We find that our IRS sample is comprised substantially of YSO and HII regions, post-main-sequence low-mass stars: (post-)asymptotic giant branch stars and planetary nebulae and massive stars including several rare evolutionary types. Two supernova remnants, a nova and several background galaxies were also observed. We use these classifications to improve our understanding of the stellar populations in the LMC, study the composition and characteristics of dust species in a variety of LMC objects and to verify the photometric classification methods used by mid-IR surveys.We discover that some widely used catalogues of objects contain considerable contamination and others are missing sources in our sample. We performed a detailed spectroscopic analysis of the fullerene C60-containing planetary nebula (PN) Lin49 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) using XSHOOTER at the European Southern Observatory Very Large Telescope and the Spitzer/Infrared Spectrograph instruments. We derived nebular abundances for nine elements. We used TLUSTY to derive photospheric parameters for the central star. Lin49 is C-rich and metal-deficient PN (Z ~ 0.0006). The nebular abundances are in good agreement with asymptotic giant branch nucleosynthesis models for stars with initial mass 1.25 M⊙ and metallicity Z = 0.001. Using the TLUSTY synthetic spectrum of the central star to define the heating and ionizing source, we constructed the photoionization model with CLOUDY that matches the observed spectral energy distribution (SED) and the line fluxes in the UV to far-IR wavelength ranges simultaneously. We could not fit the ~1-5 μm SED using a model with 0.005-0.1-μm-sized graphite grains and a constant hydrogen density shell owing to the prominent near-IR excess, while at other wavelengths the model fits the observed values reasonably well. We argue that the near-IR excess might indicate either (1) the presence of very small particles in the form of small carbon clusters, small graphite sheets, or fullerene precursors, or (2) the presence of a high-density structure surrounding the central star. We found that SMC C60 PNe show a near-IR excess component to lesser or greater degree. This suggests that these C60 PNe might maintain a structure nearby their central star. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The life cycle of dust in the interstellar medium is heavily influenced by outflows from asymptotic giant branch (AGB) and red supergiant (RSG) stars, a large fraction of which is contributed by a few very dusty sources. We compute the dust input to the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) by fitting the multi-epoch mid-infrared spectral energy distributions of AGB/RSG candidates with models from the Grid of RSG and AGB ModelS grid, allowing us to estimate the luminosities and dust-production rates (DPRs) of the entire population. By removing contaminants, we guarantee a high-quality data set with reliable DPRs and a complete inventory of the dustiest sources. We find a global AGB/RSG dust-injection rate of (1.3 ± 0.1) × 10-6 M☉ yr-1, in agreement with estimates derived from mid-infrared colours and excess fluxes. As in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a majority (66 per cent) of the dust arises from the extreme AGB stars, which comprise only ≈7 per cent of our sample. A handful of far-infrared sources, whose 24 μm fluxes exceed their 8 μm fluxes, dominate the dust input. Their inclusion boosts the global DPR by ≈1.5×, making it necessary to determine whether they are AGB stars. Model assumptions, rather than missing data, are the major sources of uncertainty; depending on the choice of dust shell expansion speed and dust optical constants, the global DPR can be up to ≈10 times higher. The Magellanic Clouds are uniquely placed to study the stellar contribution to dust emission. Individual stars can be resolved in these systems even in the mid-infrared, and they are close enough to allow detection of infrared excess caused by dust. We have searched the Spitzer Space Telescope data archive for all Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) staring-mode observations of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) and found that 209 Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) point sources within the footprint of the Surveying the Agents of Galaxy Evolution in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SAGE-SMC) Spitzer Legacy programme were targeted, within a total of 311 staring-mode observations. We classify these point sources using a decision tree method of object classification, based on infrared spectral features, continuum and spectral energy distribution shape, bolometric luminosity, cluster membership and variability information. We find 58 asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, 51 young stellar objects, 4 post-AGB objects, 22 red supergiants, 27 stars (of which 23 are dusty OB stars), 24 planetary nebulae (PNe), 10 Wolf-Rayet stars, 3 H II regions, 3 R Coronae Borealis stars, 1 Blue Supergiant and 6 other objects, including 2 foreground AGB stars. A microfluidic chip approach utilising integrated electrically connected stationary SERS targets based on inkjet-printed silver nanoparticles is presented. It enables multiple interference-free consecutive surface-enhanced Raman measurements inside chip channels by electrically assisted regeneration of the stationary SERS substrate. Thereby it circumvents common adsorption and memory effect problems associated with stationary SERS targets allowing multiple consecutive measurements in a continuous-flow system. We present the detection and analysis of molecular hydrogen emission towards ten interstellar regions in the Large Magellanic Cloud. We examined low-resolution infrared spectral maps of 12 regions obtained with the Spitzer infrared spectrograph (IRS). The pure rotational 0-0 transitions of H2 at 28.2 and 17.1 μm are detected in the IRS spectra for 10 regions. The higher level transitions are mostly upper limit measurements except for three regions, where a 3σ detection threshold is achieved for lines at 12.2 and 8.6 μm. The excitation diagrams of the detected H2 transitions are used to determine the warm H2 gas column density and temperature. The single-temperature fits through the lower transition lines give temperatures in the range 86-137 K. The bulk of the excited H2 gas is found at these temperatures and contributes ~5-17 per cent to the total gas mass. We find a tight correlation of the H2 surface brightness with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon and total infrared emission, which is a clear indication of photoelectric heating in photodissociation regions. We find the excitation of H2 by this process is equally efficient in both atomic- and molecular-dominated regions. We also present the correlation of the warm H2 physical conditions with dust properties. The warm H2 mass fraction and excitation temperature show positive correlations with the average starlight intensity, again supporting H2 excitation in photodissociation regions. We investigate the population of cool, evolved stars in the Local Group dwarf elliptical galaxy M32, using Infrared Array Camera observations from the Spitzer Space Telescope. We construct deep mid-infrared colour-magnitude diagrams for the resolved stellar populations within 3.5 arcmin of M32's centre, and identify those stars that exhibit infrared excess. Our data are dominated by a population of luminous, dust-producing stars on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) and extend to approximately 3 mag below the AGB tip. We detect for the first time a sizeable population of 'extreme' AGB stars, highly enshrouded by circumstellar dust and likely completely obscured at optical wavelengths. The total dust-injection rate from the extreme AGB candidates is measured to be 7.5 × 10-7 M☉ yr-1, corresponding to a gas mass-loss rate of 1.5 × 10-4 M☉ yr-1. We have selected a homogeneous sample of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars in the Galactic bulge population from the ISOGAL survey. Our target stars cover a wide range of mass-loss rates (∼10−8–10−4 M⊙ yr−1) and differ primarily by their age on the AGB. This homogeneous sample is thus ideally suited to study the dust formation process as a function of age on the AGB. We observed our sample with Spitzer-Infrared Spectrograph, and studied the overall properties of the infrared spectra of these targets. The analysis is complicated by the presence of strong and variable background emission, and the extracted infrared AGB star spectra are affected by interstellar extinction. Several stars in our sample have no detectable dust emission, and we used these ‘naked stars’ to characterize the stellar and molecular contributions to the infrared spectra of our target stars. The resulting dust spectra of our targets do indeed show significant variety in their spectral appearance, pointing to differing dust compositions for the targets. We classify the spectra based on the shape of their 10-μm emission following the scheme by Sloan & Price. We find that the early silicate emission classes associated with oxide dust are generally under-represented in our sample due to extinction effects. We also find a weak 13-μm dust feature in two of our otherwise naked star spectra, suggesting that the carrier of this feature could potentially be the first condensate in the sequence of dust condensation. ABSTRACT We investigate the occurrence of crystalline silicates in oxygen-rich evolved stars across a range of metallicities and mass-loss rates. It has been suggested that the crystalline silicate feature strength increases with increasing mass-loss rate, implying a correlation between lattice structure and wind density. To test this, we analyse Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph and Infrared Space Observatory Short Wavelength Spectrometer spectra of 217 oxygen-rich asymptotic giant branch and 98 red supergiants in the Milky Way, the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, and Galactic globular clusters. These encompass a range of spectral morphologies from the spectrally rich which exhibit a wealth of crystalline and amorphous silicate features to 'naked' (dust-free) stars. We combine spectroscopic and photometric observations with the grams grid of radiative transfer models to derive (dust) mass-loss rates and temperature. We then measure the strength of the crystalline silicate bands at 23, 28 and 33 μm. We detect crystalline silicates in stars with dust mass-loss rates which span over 3 dex, down to rates of ∼10−9 M⊙ yr−1. Detections of crystalline silicates are more prevalent in higher mass-loss rate objects, though the highest mass-loss rate objects do not show the 23-μm feature, possibly due to the low temperature of the forsterite grains or it may indicate that the 23-μm band is going into absorption due to high column density. Furthermore, we detect a change in the crystalline silicate mineralogy with metallicity, with enstatite seen increasingly at low metallicity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT Prompted by the ongoing interest in Spitzer Infrared Spectrometer spectra of carbon stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud, we have investigated the circumstellar chemistry of carbon stars in low-metallicity environments. Consistent with observations, our models show that acetylene is particularly abundant in the inner regions of low metallicity carbon-rich asymptotic giant branch stars - more abundant than carbon monoxide. As a consequence, larger hydrocarbons have higher abundances at the metallicities of the Magellanic Clouds than in stars with solar metallicity. We also find that the oxygen and nitrogen chemistry is suppressed at lower metallicity, as expected. Finally, we calculate molecular line emission from carbon stars in the Large and Small Magellanic Cloud and find that several molecules should be readily detectable with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array at Full Science operations. We present a model using the evolution of the stellar population in a starburst galaxy to predict the crystallinity of the silicates in the interstellar medium of this galaxy. We take into account dust production in stellar ejecta, and amorphization and destruction in the interstellar medium and find that a detectable amount of crystalline silicates may be formed, particularly at high star formation rates, and in case supernovae are efficient dust producers. We discuss the effect of dust destruction and amorphization by supernovae, and the effect of a low dust-production efficiency by supernovae, and find that when taking this into account, crystallinity in the interstellar medium becomes hard to detect. Levels of 6.5-13 per cent crystallinity in the interstellar medium of starburst galaxies have been observed and thus we conclude that not all these crystalline silicates can be of stellar origin, and an additional source of crystalline silicates associated with the active galactic nucleus must be present. We present the classification of 197 point sources observed with the Infrared Spectrograph in the SAGE-Spec Legacy programme on the Spitzer Space Telescope. We introduce a decision-tree method of object classification based on infrared spectral features, continuum and spectral energy distribution shape, bolometric luminosity, cluster membership and variability information, which is used to classify the SAGE-Spec sample of point sources. The decision tree has a broad application to mid-infrared spectroscopic surveys, where supporting photometry and variability information are available. We use these classifications to make deductions about the stellar populations of the Large Magellanic Cloud and the success of photometric classification methods. We find 90 asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, 29 young stellar objects, 23 post-AGB objects, 19 red supergiants, eight stellar photospheres, seven background galaxies, seven planetary nebulae, two H regions and 12 other objects, seven of which remain unclassified. We present the comparison of the three most important ice constituents (water, CO and CO) in the envelopes of massive young stellar objects (YSOs), in environments of different metallicities: the Galaxy, the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and, for the first time, the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We present observations of water, CO and CO ice in four SMC and three LMC YSOs (obtained with Spitzer-IRS and VLT/ISAAC). While water and CO ice are detected in all Magellanic YSOs, CO ice is not detected in the SMC objects. Both CO and CO ice abundances are enhanced in the LMC when compared to high-luminosity Galactic YSOs. Based on the fact that both species appear to be enhanced in a consistent way, this effect is unlikely to be the result of enhanced CO production in hotter YSO envelopes as previously thought. Instead we propose that this results from a reduced water column density in the envelopes of LMC YSOs, a direct consequence of both the stronger UV radiation field and the reduced dust-to-gas ratio at lower metallicity. In the SMC the environmental conditions are harsher, and we observe a reduction in CO column density. Furthermore, the low gas-phase CO density and higher dust temperature in YSO envelopes in the SMC seem to inhibit CO freeze-out. The scenario we propose can be tested with further observations. We report on an analysis of the gas and dust budget in the interstellar medium (ISM) of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Recent observations from the Spitzer Space Telescope enable us to study the mid-infrared dust excess of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars in the LMC. This is the first time we can quantitatively assess the gas and dust input from AGB stars over a complete galaxy, fully based on observations. The integrated mass-loss rate over all intermediate and high mass-loss rate carbon-rich AGB candidates in the LMC is , up to . This number could be increased up to if oxygen-rich stars are included. This is overall consistent with theoretical expectations, considering the star formation rate (SFR) when these low- and intermediate-mass stars where formed, and the initial mass functions. AGB stars are one of the most important gas sources in the LMC, with supernovae (SNe), which produces about . At the moment, the SFR exceeds the gas feedback from AGB stars and SNe in the LMC, and the current star formation depends on gas already present in the ISM. This suggests that as the gas in the ISM is exhausted, the SFR will eventually decline in the LMC, unless gas is supplied externally. Our estimates suggest ‘a missing dust-mass problem’ in the LMC, which is similarly found in high- z galaxies: the accumulated dust mass from AGB stars and possibly SNe over the dust lifetime (400–800 Myr) is significant less than the dust mass in the ISM. BACKGROUND: Until recently, gadolinium (Gd)-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has increasingly replaced iodinated contrast agent examinations in dialysis patients, although only limited data existed about the clinical safety of Gd contrast agents in these patients. Specific clinical adverse events (AEs), including nephrogenic systemic fibrosis, were linked to Gd exposure in dialysis patients. An inflammatory reaction or transmetallation may be involved. STUDY DESIGN: Secondary analysis of a 5-day observational study in a parent cardiovascular study with repetitive cardiac MRI (32 patients) and patients undergoing Gd-enhanced MRI for clinical indications (6 patients). Clinical information and samples were obtained according to parent protocol. SETTING & PARTICIPANTS: Dialysis patients at a university-based dialysis unit. PREDICTOR: Gd-chelate complex. 37 of 38 patients underwent 64 MRI studies with Gd-diethylenetriamine penta-acetic acid (Gd-DTPA). 25 of these patients underwent additional MRI studies with gadobutrol (n = 10), 0.9% saline (n = 7), or both (n = 8), and 1 patient received gadobutrol only. OUTCOMES: Clinical adverse events; C-reactive protein (CRP) levels on days 1, 3, and 5 after MRI; Gd levels in blood and urine after MRI. RESULTS: CRP levels increased 10-fold on day 3 after MRI in 87% of MRI studies with Gd-DTPA (+59.3 +/- 57.9 mg/L [P < 0.001] versus -0.9 +/- 3.7 mg/L with gadobutrol versus -0.9 +/- 8.5 mg/L with 0.9% saline). 77 mild to moderate and 3 serious AEs were observed in 24 patients. CRP levels and adverse events did not correlate with Gd blood concentrations. CRP level increase or AEs were not observed after MRI with gadobutrol or 0.9% saline. LIMITATIONS: Observational study without randomization, risk of bias because of multiple MRI studies in a limited patient cohort. CONCLUSION: Gd-DTPA, but not gadobutrol, induces an acute-phase reaction and clinical AEs in dialysis patients. Additional investigations have to analyze the underlying pathomechanism. In order to investigate the effect of dust production on the molecular absorption, we model the dust continuum and the 7.5 and 13.7 μ m acetylene absorption features in the Spitzer IRS spectra of 148 carbon stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Our preliminary investigation does not find a strong correlation between the dust-production rate and the column density of acetylene for the LMC sample. We present radiative transfer modelling of the dust around U Ant, a well-studied detached-shell source. U Ant is among the >400 sources targeted by the Nearby Evolved Stars Survey (NESS; PI: P. Gas-to-dust ratios in Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars are used to calculate gas masses from measured dust masses and vice versa, but can vary widely and are rarely directly measured. In this work, we present spatially resolved gas and dust masses for a sample of 8 nearby AGB stars, using JCMT CO-line and continuum observations, and compare them. This serves as a pilot study for the Nearby Evolved Stars Survey (NESS; PI: P. Scicluna) project which will provide similar observations of ∼400 AGB stars in a volume-limited sample. We analyze the dust emission features seen in Spitzer Space Telescope Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) spectra of red supergiant (RSG) and oxygen-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud and Small Magellanic Cloud galaxies and in various Milky Way globular clusters. The spectra come from the Spitzer Legacy program SAGE-Spectroscopy (PI: F. Kemper), the Spitzer program SMC-Spec (PI: G. Sloan), and other archival Spitzer-IRS programs. The broad 10 and 20 micron emission features attributed to amorphous dust of silicate composition seen in the spectra show evidence for systematic differences in the centroid of both emission features between O-rich AGB and RSG populations. Radiative transfer modeling using the GRAMS grid of models of AGB and RSG stars suggests that the centroid differences are due to differences in dust properties. We investigate differences in dust composition, size, shape, etc that might be responsible for these spectral differences. We explore how these differences may arise from the different circumstellar environments around RSG and O-rich AGB stars and assess effects of varying metallicity (LMC versus SMC versus Milky Way globular cluster) and other properties (mass-loss rate, luminosity, etc.) on the dust originating from these stars. We present the deepest, widest color-magnitude diagrams at mid infrared wavelengths ever produced for the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The SAGE (Surveying the Agents of a Galaxy's Evolution) survey of the LMC comprises a seven by seven degree mapping of the entire LMC in each of the Spitzer IRAC and MIPS bands. The present work includes mid and near infrared photometry between 1.25 and 24 microns. These data are used to identify 100's of thousands of red giants and 10's of thousands of asymptotic giant branch stars and supergiants which are classified as oxygen rich, carbon rich, or “extreme” mass losing stars, among others. SAGE will revolutionize the study of evolved stars and mass input into the ISM in the LMC because its deep photometry is sensitive to all significant mass losing sources in the galaxy and provides the context of the overall stellar populations which give rise to the mass losing AGB stars. The SAGE data can be used to help synthesize and assess models of star forming galaxies at high redshift for a range of ages and chemical compositions. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
