This paper is twofold. First, it examines the misconceptions held by students about atoms. Second, it determines the suggestions of the instructors (academics and teachers) to overcome these misconceptions. The study adopted a case study research method. A questionnaire was administered to 288 students and a semi-structured interview was conducted with 20 educators, including 10 teachers and 10 academics from the fields of physics and chemistry. A number of students were observed to have misconceptions about atoms, and they were unable to grasp the concept. This situation may have resulted from teaching students the theories of the atoms in a historically chronological order and ineffective methods of teaching. It was recommended that atomic models not be taught in primary school education, and that three new methods could be used in teaching this subject.

According to 2022 data, approximately 4 million Syrians live in Türkiye, and it is known that %24.7 of them have various disabilities. Recent research has shown that the developmental disability is one of the most common types of disability among Syrian refugees in Türkiye. We aimed to investigate the lives of refugees with developmental disabilities, who are twice a minority. Among the Syrian refugees in Türkiye, 24.7% are individuals with special needs. It was reported that developmental disabilities and post-traumatic stress disorder are the most prevalent diagnoses across the refugees. The study aims to investigate the current status and educational needs of Syrian refugees with developmental disabilities and their parents, who live in refugee camps in Türkiye with a specific emphasis on their education life. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with young refugees with developmental disabilities and their parents in the study conducted with a phenomenological approach. The content analysis conducted on the study data revealed that these individuals migrated to Türkiye due to the Syrian war, and they did not want to return to their home country. Since they lived in camps in Türkiye, they have been isolated from social life. Participants stated that they mostly required special education and health facilities and socialization. The identified problems were analyzed, and certain recommendations are presented based on the study findings.

The purpose of this study is to adapt Adaptation of AIR Self-Determination- Educator Version The confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) of the scale, which was translated into Turkish and studied in terms of language validity, was carried out on 220 (46.8% female, 53.2% male) special education teachers. Teachers answer the items in the scale by thinking about their students. The age range of the participants in the study was between 25 and 59, and the mean age was 36.12 (sd ± 7.03). Sixty-four percent of the students reflected by the data in the study were female and thirty-six percent were male. According to the distribution of the disability groups, 24% of the students had autism and 76% had an intellectual disability. After establishing language, the validity and reliability of the scale of analysis was examined. Item-factor structure has been tested for compliance with a model by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Based on this, five-factor structure of Adaptation of AIR Self-Determination Scale - Educator Version has been validated. As a result of the analysis for adaptation of Adaptation of AIR Self-Determination Scale - Educator Version to Turkish, it can be said that the scale is a reliable and valid measurement tool. As a result of the measurement model, the t values of the indicators in the measurement model were between 10.02 and 16.36 and R2 values varied between 0.39 and 0.78. Cronbach's Alpha ([alpha]) internal consistency coefficient of the scale ranged between 0.86 and 0.94. The CR values of the subdimensions of the scale vary between 0.86 and 0.93, and the AVE values between 0.51 and 0.70.

Background: Increased social integration of individuals with intellectual disabilities or autism could may raise their likelihood of interacting with justice system and legal staff. Aims: The present article aimed to determine the perceptions of the legal support staff about the individuals with intellectual disabilities or autism. Materials and Methods: In the study, conducted with the phenomenological method, the views of 15 legal support staff were obtained. The study reported what participants perceived and examined whether participants had an accurate understanding of the experiences/support needs of people with intellectual disabilities/autism. The data were analysed with content analysis. Results: Three themes were determined: (1) Experience of interview with an individual with intellectual disabilities/autism, (2) attitudes of judges, lawyers and other staff, and (3) abuse/trauma. Discussion: Findings are consistent with literature. Individuals with intellectual disabilities/autism have problems in expressing themselves, also staff do not know them, do not know their features. Studies show that staff often do not know what to do in these interviews. Conclusion: Based on the participant perspectives, it was determined that individuals with intellectual disabilities/autism experienced self-expression problems, interviewees did not understand children/individuals with intellectual disabilities or autism and could exhibit negative attitudes, the children could be abused and traumatised during judicial processes, they were more prone to abuse when compared to their peers, they could be involved in certain events more frequently and could be pushed to crime.

Background: Individuals with disabilities and their families, among the disadvantaged groups in society, have encountered increased hardships accessing support and services in various social contexts, such as education, health, transportation, rehabilitation, and social services. Thus, it is essential to examine parents' experiences as a background catalyzer to improve the currently available services and provide psychological and social support. This study examined the experiences of families of children with disabilities who were in Turkey during the pandemic's early stages, and yielded suggestions based on these experiences. Method: A phenomenological design was used in this study, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 parents of children with disabilities. Findings: Three themes emerged from data analysis: (a) quarantine, (b) education, and (c) children with disabilities. Conclusions: The findings revealed the importance of taking necessary precautions for individuals with disabilities and their families to access social services. Additionally, findings underline the essentiality of providing psychological support to families while providing and extending family education.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between emotional labor of sports business employees and loneliness levels in organizational life. For the purpose of the study, the universe of the research consists of sports service within the organization of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Sport Istanbul employees while the sample is created by volunteer participants who are identified through simple random sampling method (n = 330) In the study which is conducted by applying a relational screening model, the data were collected by using the survey method technique. Personal information form, emotional labor and loneliness scales in business life were applied to the participants. The data obtained were registered to the SPSS 25 package program. Correlation and regression analysis were applied as statistical process. As a result, it was determined that there is a moderate negative relationship between the emotional labor level of the employees of the sports organization and the level of loneliness in organizational life, emotional labor is the predictor of loneliness in organizational life and it explains approximately 21% of the total variance. As the level of meeting the business expectations of the employees in the service delivery increases in demand their experience of loneliness decreases in business life. Therefore, it is realized that emotional labor plays an important role in the level of loneliness in organizational life. The present study focuses on individuals with intellectual disabilities among 2.7 million Turkish citizens who had migrated to Germany since the 1960s. The study aims to determine the services provided for individuals with intellectual disabilities who migrated with or were born to a family that immigrated from Turkey to Germany and explore their lives with qualitative inquiry. For this purpose, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 parents in Germany. Then, the interview transcripts were analysed utilising the content analysis method. The findings determined four themes that revealed that Turkish migrants in Germany were satisfied with the financial, childcare, psychological, and counselling services provided for their children. Parents stated that although they were often exposed to discriminatory behaviour in Germany interwoven with the various partials of their identities, they never experienced discrimination against their children. However, interviewees placed greater importance on speaking the local language than their previous generations. Nevertheless, certain participants indicated their preference for Turkish special education teachers over others. Furthermore, the parents who wanted to relocate to Turkey were unable to do so due to the services offered for their children with intellectual disabilities in Germany.

This study aims to present a projection from a macro perspective to researchers, policymakers, institutions, and organizations by examining how the concept of “critical infrastructure” has developed analytically and systematically over the years. Compared to Turkish literature, academic studies on the concept of critical infrastructure in foreign literature have advanced. This study seeks to answer the following research questions by focusing on this relatively rich literature. How does the distribution vary according to the types of publications, the trend by years, related disciplines, authors, institution, country collaborations, citation, and keyword status related to critical infrastructure? It is aimed to reveal a typology to pave the way for future research in Türkiye. This paper uses Visual and scientific mapping methods based on Bibliographic Matching and Common Citations. 4,227 English articles which time span 1996-2022 (September) were selected from the Web of Science (WoS) database. This study explores 67 experimental research articles written about children with Autism Spectrum Disorder using high-tech devices. The studies in this research were accessed through EBSCO, Academic Search Complete, ERIC, and Uludag University online search engines using keywords such as "autism and technology", "autism and computer", "autism and tablet", and "autism and portable devices". The studies have been categorized based on their scope: studies conducted using computers and studies conducted using smart portable devices. The software programs used in these studies are described in a separate table. Research findings indicate that studies conducted on children with ASD using high-tech devices found them to be effective for teaching academic skills, communication skills, and social-emotional skills.

Purpose: The aim of the present study was to develop a Daily Life Education Program for institutionalized individuals with intellectual disabilities. Method: The system approach-based program development model was used in the study. This model includes three steps: (a) defining the problem, (b) development, and (c) assessment. In the first phase of the study, the members of the program advisory committee were identified, and the problems related to the daily life of the individuals with intellectual disabilities who reside in public care and rehabilitation centers were defined, and a work plan was developed. During the development phase, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 61 caregivers, professionals, and administrators employed in 10 public care and rehabilitation centers in seven regions in Turkey. Results: The assessment results demonstrated that content validity was obtained for all 232 program objectives. Conclusions: This study's main conclusion underline the necessity of a well-designed and well-organized life system that combines structured daily life skills training and leisure time activities for individuals with intellectual disabilities during their adulthood with the supports provided and coordinated by qualified experts and assistant personnel.

This study proposes and simulates a smart system that can be used in production car seats to decrease whiplash risk in rear-end crashes. A sliding seat incorporating a semiactively controlled magnetorheological (MR) damper model positioned under the seat-pan is simulated with a validated biofidelic human body model. Since this is the first study that demonstrates a computer controlled anti-whiplash car seat system to the best of the authors' knowledge, a benchmark analysis is carried out to compare the proposed semiactive seat with a state-of-the-art passive anti-whiplash car seat using 23 different crash pulses, including the moderate and high severity crash pulses within the European New Car Assessment Program (EuroNCAP) whiplash risk assessment framework. The proposed semiactive design outperforms the passive seat design by further reducing the values of the critical EuroNCAP whiplash criteria, such as NIC and N k m , together with the loads acting on the upper neck. The semiactive seat lowers the upper-neck shear force by an amount of 4 kg and 7 kg while lessening the NIC by 10% and 21% and N k m by 9% and 56% for the EuroNCAP crash pulses, having a delta-V of 16 km/h and 24 km/h, respectively. The findings presented in this paper can aid in the design of car seats to further mitigate whiplash risk in rear-end crashes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Open‐cell aluminum foams are gaining importance for the design of lightweight structures and as electrodes in lithium‐ion batteries. AlSi7Mg0.3 foams are produced by a modified investment casting process. By tuning the mold temperature, a change from the usual nearly monocrystalline dendritic to a polycrystalline globular grain structure is achieved. Tension and compression tests on single struts and foam specimens, respectively, are combined with digital image correlation, scanning electron microscopy, and phase contrast‐enhanced microcomputed tomography in a synchrotron facility to correlate the mechanical properties and the failure mechanisms with the microstructure. The "globular" foams exhibit a lower strength and a less pronounced subsequent stress drop than the "dendritic" foams and the deformation mechanism changes from shear band‐dominated failure to a layer‐by‐layer collapse, because of the lower strength and higher ductility of the "globular" struts. The "dendritic" struts have a more homogeneous microstructure, while the "globular" struts often contain silicon agglomerates in their central region. Accordingly, the latter struts exhibit a higher degree of scatter for the fracture strain. Thus, the arrangement of the silicon particles and the eutectic determines the mechanical properties on the strut level and thereby the failure behavior on the foam level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Olive (Olea europaea L.) is an evergreen tree species that grows naturally in regions with Mediterranean climates. Its oil and fruits are commercially valuable. Olive oil contains high levels of omega-9 (oleic acid). Because the high percentage of oleic acid makes olive oil deterioration-resistant, the development of olive varieties containing high oleic acid is one of the major goals of olive breeding programs. Therefore, this study aimed to determine quantitative trait loci (QTL) affecting the fatty acid composition of olive oil. Thus, early selection of olive genotypes with a high oleic acid content can be possible. For the determination of QTLs affecting the fatty acid composition of olive oil, a high-density genetic map was developed using a segregating olive F1 population with 121 progeny and single- nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers based on genotyping by sequencing (GBS). The 2892.14 cM genetic map was composed of 3254 SNP markers on 23 chromosomes, with an average distance of 0.93 cM. For QTL analysis, the fatty acid composition of the segregating olive F1 population was determined using gas chromatography in two different years. A total of 31 QTLs were discovered in the first year and 29 in the second year. Common QTLs associated with fatty acid composition in both years have been found on chromosome 1, chromosome 2, and chromosome 10. For oleic acid, 11 QTLs were discovered in the first year and 12 QTLs in the second year. With these results, the QTLs linked to fatty acid synthesis in olive oil can be used as genetic resources for marker-assisted selection (MAS) in olive breeding studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives of the study are to determine the effect of teaching based on multiple intelligence theory (TBMIT) in visual arts class on student success and permanence. Experimental design is used in the study. Study group is composed of students at 8th grade in 2012-2013 educational term at Atatürk Secondary School in Igdir city centre. Experimental and control groups are made up of 32 and 31 students, respectively. In control group, conventional teaching method was used for expressing the subject of "miniature picture" in visual arts class while in experimental group a teaching method based on multiple intelligence theory (MIT) was applied for 3 weeks in both groups. Success test developed by the researchers was applied to measure success readily after and permanence of the knowledge learned 3 weeks after the experiment. In the comparison of the results obtained from Success and Permanence tests of experiment and control groups, t test was used by considering the statistical analyses of data obtained. It was found form the results that experimental group is more successful than control on the average. According to P test results, experimental group had larger P scores than the control. As a conclusion, MIT was found to affect Success and Permanence of 8th grade students in miniature picture subject in visual arts class.

Simple Summary: We evaluated the real-world efficacy and safety of nivolumab plus chemotherapy in patients with HER2-negative unresectable advanced or metastatic gastric, gastroesophageal junction (GEJ), or esophageal adenocarcinoma. In addition, we identified subgroups that may experience superior outcomes. The median progression-free survival and overall survival were 11.7 months and 18.2 months, respectively, whereas the objective response rate was 70.3%. Our results showed that nivolumab plus chemotherapy is effective and safe for first-line treatment of Turkish patients with HER2-negative advanced gastric, GEJ, or esophageal adenocarcinoma. Patient selection is crucial for optimal outcomes. Future studies are needed to identify predictive biomarkers and treatment strategies to further improve the prognosis of patients. Based on the CheckMate 649 trial, nivolumab plus chemotherapy is the recommended first-line treatment for HER2-negative unresectable advanced or metastatic gastric, gastroesophageal junction (GEJ), or esophageal adenocarcinoma. This nationwide, multicenter, retrospective study evaluated the real-world effectiveness of this regimen in Turkish patients and identified subgroups that may experience superior outcomes. Conducted across 16 oncology centers in Turkey, this study retrospectively reviewed the clinical charts of adult patients diagnosed with HER2-negative unresectable advanced or metastatic gastric, GEJ, or esophageal adenocarcinoma from 2016 to 2023. This study included 111 patients (54 women, 57 men) with a median age of 58 years. The median progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were 11.7 months and 18.2 months, respectively, whereas the objective response rate (ORR) was 70.3%. Multivariable analyses revealed that previous curative surgery was a favorable independent prognostic factor for both PFS and OS. Conversely, an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status of 2 emerged as an adverse independent prognostic factor for OS. The safety profile of nivolumab plus chemotherapy was found to be manageable. Our findings support the use of nivolumab plus chemotherapy for the first-line treatment of Turkish patients with HER2-negative unresectable advanced or metastatic gastric, GEJ, or esophageal adenocarcinoma. In this study, exhaust emissions originating from purse seine fishing vessels were calculated. A bottom-up method based on ship activities was used for emission calculations. Necessary information for the calculations was obtained from the BAGIS (Fishing Vessels Monitoring System) system. Eighteen purse seiners in the Black Sea region with a length of 20 m or more engaged in fishing activities in the 2017-2018 fishing season were used as samples. These vessels were categorized into three different groups according to their length. The emissions produced by each length group were calculated separately under different conditions for vessels identified as "port", "operation", and "navigation". The total emissions in the Black Sea region and Türkiye were estimated. This study provides emission estimates using operational conditions and real data from Turkish-flagged purse seiners engaged in fishing in the Black Sea. In this respect, this research presents novelty and addresses an important gap in the existing literature. The annual emission amount of purse seine fishing vessels in the Black Sea is 260,000 tons, while the annual emission amount from purse seine vessels throughout Türkiye has been calculated as 440,000 tons. As a result, the effectiveness of the Emission Control Area (ECA)/Sulphur ECA region implementation in reducing emissions from maritime activities has been demonstrated. Natural fibers extracted from plants are preferred as an alternative to synthetic products. The main reasons for this preference are their affordable cost, light weight and good mechanical properties. However, finding new natural raw materials is challenging due to growth limitations in different geographical areas. Platanus orientalis L. (Eastern plane tree) is a tree with abundant fruits that can grow in many regions of the world. The aim of this study was to determine the mechanical (tensile strength, tensile modulus, elongation), physical (density, fiber diameter) and chemical (cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin) properties of Platanus orientalis L. fruit's stem by fiber extraction from the stems of the tree. It was determined that the extracted fiber had good mechanical properties and cellulose content of 42.03%. As a result of thermogravimetric analysis, it was determined that the plane tree fruit's stem fiber had thermal resistance of up to 299 °C. The tensile strength value was 157.76 MPa, the tensile modulus value was 1.39 GPa and the elongation value was 22.01%. It was determined that it is suitable for use in fiber reinforcement in thermoplastic-based composites at temperatures below 299 °C. According to the results obtained by the mechanical, chemical and physical analysis of Platanus orientalis L. fruit's stem fiber (PoLfs), it could be recommended as a suitable alternative as a reinforcing fiber in thermoplastic and thermoset composites. A gypsum interlayer with 100 m thick was identified within the Early-Middle Triassic shelf type clastic and carbonates of the Keban Metamorphics, along the shore of the Fırat River, ~500 m west of Keban district (Elazığ, southeast Turkey). Gypsum layers have thickness of 15–50 cm, and exhibit the original sedimentary bedding intercalated with dolomitic carbonate rocks. They were subjected to hydrothermal alteration related to late Cretaceous magmatic intrusions. Hydrothermal activity caused the dissolution and recrystallization of gypsum, as well as occurrences of secondary gypsum, elemental sulphur and quartz (amethyst). The geochemical (trace element and sulphur and oxygen isotope) compositions of gypsum and dolomites indicate typical marine evaporite compositions. The δ34S and δ18O values of the Keban gypsum correspond to Early Triassic evaporites, based on Early-Middle Triassic seawater sulphate composition. Keban gypsum represents Triassic rifting along the northeastern margin of Gondwana and exhibits similar age (Early-Middle Triassic) and palaeogeographic setting to Kemer (Antalya, Turkey) gypsum, associated with opening of the Neotethyan Ocean between Gondwana (Pangea) and the Cimmerian microcontinent. However, the Keban gypsum is different from the late Triassic Honaz-Denizli and Nusaybin-Gaziantep gypsum representing the southern margin of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean (Tauride Belt) and southern margin of the Neo-Tethys (Arabian Plate). The presence of gypsum is observed on both passive continental margins of Neo-Tethys means that their deposition took place before the subduction of the Neo-Tethys Ocean during Late Triassic-Jurassic period. Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or intellectual disabilities (ID) can often victims and sometimes witnesses or defendant in forensic events. It is important to investigate the experiences of forensic interviewing with these individuals and to identify associated issues to conduct better forensic interviews with them. The present study aims to determine the experiences of the staff and interviewees in forensic interviews conducted with individuals with ASD/ID. The study was conducted with a phenomenological approach, and the data were collected with the semi-structured interview method and analyzed with content analysis. The findings obtained with the analysis of the study data with content analysis revealed three themes: forensic interviews, legal support officer, and the judicial process. In the study, it was concluded that individuals with ASD/ID could not express themselves effectively, could be traumatized during the interviews, the interviewers felt inadequate and experienced associated problems, and required training support and counseling by a special education specialist. It is recommended to create a protocol for the participation of special education experts in forensic interviews in order to support individuals with ASD/ID. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Intellectual disability (ID) persists from birth through adulthood and aging. Thus, the support provided to individuals with intellectual disabilities (IwID) in adulthood is essential to increase their self-determination and quality of life. This research aimed to determine how IwID may receive support for education, working life, accommodation, and leisure in adulthood in the Turkish context by increasing their and their families' quality of life without socially discriminating against them. Qualitative data were collected in two stages, combining semi-structured interviews and the Delphi study technique. Results prompted the recommendation that a legal basis for transition-to-adulthood planning be established in Turkey for a functional adult service model. Next, a model with specific standards by which multidisciplinary experts analyse education, work, leisure, and housing alternatives for preadulthood and adulthood should be developed and coordinated by the Turkish Ministry of National Education and the Ministry of Family.
