Kerime Nadir is a writer who has a respected place in Turkish Literature, is known for her romance novels, and has deeply influenced Turkish society. So much so that her novels have not only been adapted into films but have been the subject of many academic studies and postgraduate theses. What is the reason for this achieved status in the Turkish Literature of Nadir? Thus Nadir is a contemporary interpreter of the traditional orientation of love affairs. The protagonists in her novels are generally both forbidden and in some cases impossible love figures, such as cousins, half-siblings, and close relatives, who have a kinship and/or age difference between them. The characters of the novels are usually wounded souls who seek true love and encounter many unexpected events on the thorny paths of life. Finally, they have realized that happiness is not in vanity but in simplicity, virtue, patience, sacrifice, and nobility. In Nadir's works, there is also a reference to the freedom of choice, that we can change our destiny if we want, instead of accepting the destiny drawn by society. In this study, a comparison between Nadir's novel The Hiccup and Honoré de Balzac's novel Le Lys dans la vallée will be made, The main characters in Hiccup of Nadir and Le Lys dans la vallée of Balzac have similar attitudes and behaviors being observed. Materials and Methods: Thirteen patients with clinical and/or histopathological diagnoses of atopic dermatitis who received dupilumab treatment and were subsequently followed up in Bezmialem Vakif University dermatology outpatient clinic between April 2019 and October 2021 were included in our study.Patient files were reviewed, and patients were interviewed in‐person or by phone to learn about the COVID‐19 contagion.Descriptive statistical analysis was performed with Microsoft Excel, and the data obtained were calculated as mean and percentage. Results: All of our patients responded to the treatment after one course of dupilumab injection and also CRP and LDH levels decreased. Conjunctivitis side effect was found at a slightly higher rate than in previous clinical studies. The treatment was continued during the COVID‐19 pandemic in most patients. Meanwhile, four patients had COVID‐19 infection, but one of them was not using dupixent at that time. Conclusion: We can conclude that dupilumab is an effective and safe therapy for patients with severe AD also in cases of severe infections. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The physical appearance of the fairies were designed to the look like of popular stars such as Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian. Straffi’s Rainbow SpA combined with Viacom (US media company) after becoming internationally popular of the movie beyond expectations. The ongoing series of the film after partnership with Nickelodeon, display an example of American consumer culture that is growing importance of physical appearance and perfect beauty with constantly changing costume. Whether or not there is a consensus on exactly what is beautiful is one of the issues that have preoccupied thinkers since ancient times. What makes something or someone beautiful, whether it is a feature of a person or an object, is rather in the eye of the beholder. However, Winx Club series contain images that encourage luxury consumption and cosmetic surgery in the fictional universe of ‘perfect beauty’ which there is no connection between soul and beauty. I try to explain to perfect beauty ideal on capitalist society and in what ways, changing our body easily, via Winx fairies’ exaggerated physical appearances, which give encouraging signals for luxury cosmetic products. Our aim was to measure PDL space width using periapical radiography, CBCT and micro‐CT. Dry human mandibular bones (n = 36) consisting of 59 molar and 36 premolar teeth were used. Four image sets were obtained as follows: (i) photostimulable phosphor plate (PSP), periapical radiography, (ii) CBCT 0.075 mm voxel size, (iii) CBCT 0.2 mm voxel size and (iv) micro‐CT 0.06 mm voxel size. Micro‐CT images were considered as the gold standard. Four observers measured the PDL space widths twice. Intra‐ and interclass correlation coefficients (ICC) were calculated. Spearman's rho correlation was assessed. PDL space widths ranged between 0.16 and 0.28 mm. There was good reliability within and between observers (P < 0.01). There was no significant relationship between micro‐CT and periapical imaging. (P > 0.05). There is no standard practice for the sustainability of medical education in epidemics such as Covid-19 and disasters affecting society. Synchronous or asynchronous trainings have been carried out in some of universities and colleges that have distance education technical infrastructure, during the Covid-19 pandemic. If every student has access to information technologies and the skills of the instructors who will prepare and deliver the training increase their ability to use information technologies, there is no problem in the implementation and maintenance of theoretical lessons. During the Covid-19 pandemic, we had to go to distance education, which we had not yet implemented at Bezmialem Vakıf University Faculty of Medicine. During this period, we applied asynchronous and synchronous education models (mixed model) for theoretical lessons. However, the fact that practical and internship applications were carried out by distance education - although videos about skills and practices were shot and uploaded to the system - it was not possible to replace the formal education. Distance education is inevitable for the continuity of education in epidemic and disaster situations. However, after the epidemic and disaster situations have passed, practical and internship practices should be carried out as much as possible in addition to distance education in medical education. In normal times, distance education can only be used to support formal education in medical education. As a result of all these evaluations and experiences we gained in the Covid 19 pandemic, we think that synchronous/synchronous distance education applications will improve over time and contribute to medical education. The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) is an international financial institutaion, established in the leadership of the United States with the multiple agreement in the Bretton Woods Conference to lift the trade barriers. With the establishment of IDA (International Development Association) in 1960, IBRD is refered the name World Bank. In the 1950s and 60s, the Bank's primary focus was that funding of large infrastructure projects such as roads, dams.. etc. In the sense of The Bank's development projects in 1970's, concentrated on people-oriented development projects such as related to rural and urban development more than the construction of material structures. In the 1980s, the Bank, began to imposed on "conditionally" for structural adjustment credits. The meaing of conditional loan is to commit borrower contries to implementing certain policy menus of reforms as health, education systems before receiving the funds agreed to. In the early 1990s, classical social policy discourse completely changed and social policies became facilitators of economic growth. Finally, the shifting from economic development to economic growth policies caused the Bank, became the global governance center of social policy. On the other hand, the Bank, gives advice that to have enhanced human capital for developing countries as the way of dealing with fierce competition and innovations coming through technology. I will try to explain the new social order in which the Bank is at the global center within the concepts of new labourforce, fierce competiton, technological innovation and human capital. Objectives: To assess linear and volumetric measurement accuracy of periodontal defects (class 2 furcation, fenestration, dehiscence, and three-wall intrabony defect) by using CBCT and micro-CT images obtained at different voxel sizes. Material and methods: We created 66 periodontal defects in human dry mandibles. Images of teeth with defects were taken by Planmeca Promox 3D Max (CBCT) at voxel sizes of 0.2 and 0.075 mm and super-argus PET/CT (micro-CT) at voxel sizes of 0.12 and 0.06 mm. All defects were then linearly (depth, width, and height) and volumetrically measured by 3D-DOCTOR software. Differences between voxels were assessed by Wilcoxon signed rank test. Bland-Altman limits of agreement and ICCs were calculated to assess agreement between the methods. Significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: Volumes measured by micro-CT (0.12–0.06 mm) were higher than those of CBCT (0.2–0.075 mm) measurements regardless of the voxel size. ICC between micro CT and CBCT methods was found to be statistically significant for all types of defects in terms of volume (p < 0.001), height (p < 0.05), width (p < 0.001), and depth measurements (p < 0.001). Conclusion: CBCT provides useful information regarding linear and volumetric measurement of periodontal defects in vitro. Clinical relevance: Size and volume of periodontal defects may play an important role in the determination of the most appropriate treatment plan and disease prognosis along with outcome assessment. The Industrial Revolution was an irrevocable new beginning for humanity. The invention of cotton spinning machinery made an opportunity of United Kingdom to dominate markets via colonies. United Kingdom bought cheaper cotton, cotton spin and the other materials by obtaining via colonies. So, first industrial revolution made West Countries to reach mass economic growth and mass prosperity. In 1914, Hendry Ford invented assembly line and increased workers' salary. This innovation was provided mass production and mass consumption. At the same time, the fordist production system supported the Keynesian Welfare State and full employment policies. Welfare State and full employment policies, both were designed to improve the economic security of the individual, although welfare-state arrangements deal with life-cycle situation, while full-employment policies focus on the situation at a given point in time. In the 1970s, with the beginning of invention of programmable machines caused post-fordist production while caused flexible production and flexible labour force. But, rapid tecnological advances, IT enabled machines and industrial robots can cause unemployment problem. Some scientist says that investment in human capital financed by the worker can provide to increase skills and provision of training level and quality. Automation technologies and rapid tecnological advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have the potential to disrupt working relations. The problem is to have, one hand tecnological advance can provide new occupations but the other hand, new jobs can't enough replace disappeared ones. So, rising automation is happening in a period of growing economic inequality. Some scientist believe that rapid increasing technology could transform the human into a so-called overhuman. Esspecially Stephen Hawking focused on is: enhanced genetic engineering, Crispr-Cas9 machine which change DNA structure of humans. Another comment in the book by Nietche states that "thus spoke zarathustra" mentions overhuman. Objective: Platelets play an important role in the pathogenesis of disorders associated with the local or systemic inflammation. Mean platelet volume (MPV) is a marker for platelet activation, and larger platelets are more activated. In this study, we aimed to investigate MPV values in patients with Behcet's disease, patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis, and controls. Methods: Patients with Behcet's disease and patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis who presented to a dermatology outpatients clinic were enrolled in this study. Age, sex, MPV values, vitamin B12, and TSH were retrospectively recorded. Results: A total of 113 patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis, 87 patients with Behcet's disease, and 71 healthy controls were enrolled in this study. Among them, 74 (65.5%) of the patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis were females, and 39 (35.5%) were males. Additionally, 50 (63.4%) of the patients with Behcet's disease were females, and 37 (42.5%) were males. Finally, 45 (63.4%) of the controls were females, and 26 (36.6%) were males. There was no statistically significant difference in MPV values in patients with Behcet's disease, patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis, and control group. Conclusion: MPV is a simple and useful parameter seen in routine complete blood count (CBC) laboratory tests. It is investigated as an inflammation marker. Although in some studies, MPV was high in patients with Behcet's disease, in our study, we did not observe any statistically significant difference in patients with Behcet's disease, patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis, and control group. Background/aim: radionuclide To describe the role of baseline gallium (Ga)-68 DOTATATE positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) in the prediction of the response to peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT) using lutetium (Lu)-177 DOTATATE. Materials and methods: Analysis was made of baseline Ga-68 DOTATATE PET/CT images of 29 patients (17 females and 12 males; mean age: 50.7 ± 14.6 years) with metastatic neuroendocrine tumors who received PRRT with Lu-177 DOTATATE. Maximum standardized uptake values (SUVmax) of reference lesions and their ratios to physiological uptake organs were calculated. The relationship between these values and the radiological response was analyzed. Results: Partial response was observed in 8 (28%) patients, stable disease in 18 (62%) patients, and progressive disease in 3 (10%) patients. Mean SUVmax of reference lesions was calculated as 23.8 ± 20.5 (min-max: 5.1-87.3). There was no significant correlation between radiological responses and SUVmax of reference lesions and their ratios to other organs. Conclusion: Baseline Ga-68 DOTATATE PET/CT helps to show somatostatin receptor expression status and disease stage in patients who are candidates for PRRT. Objective: It has been reported that both obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) might be related to impairments in frontal-striatal brain circuits. Besides, these two disorders are frequently comorbid. However, there are no published studies directly comparing the neurobiological findings in these two disorders. The objective of the study was to investigate the differences in cortical blood flow between patients with OCD and ADHD. Method: Thirteen drug-naive OCD subjects (mean age ± SD: 10.4 ± 2.8), and 13 drug-naive ADHD subjects (mean age ± SD: 10.5 ± 2.2) were included in the study. Cerebral blood flow (CBF) was evaluated with Tc-99m-hexamethylpropyleneamine oxime (Tc99m HMPAO) brain single photon emission tomography (SPECT) during standard resting conditions in all cases. P value was set to <.006 after Bonferroni correction. Results: OCD cases had significantly higher right prefrontal (p=.003) CBF than ADHD cases. There were no significant CBF differences in other brain regions. OCD symptom severity was not related to CBF. Discussion: This is one of the very few studies which directly investigated brain imaging in pediatric OCD subjects. Results are consistent with previous studies reporting increased prefrontal CBF in OCD subjects. We also found that, consistent with the previous literature, ADHD subjects had lower prefrontal cortex CBF. Studies which compare subjects with comorbid ADHD and OCD with pure forms of these disorders are necessary to have a better understanding of similarities and differences of these two disorders. Objective: Acne vulgaris is the formation of comedones, papules, pustules, nodules, or cysts as a result of obstruction and inflammation of pilosebaceous units. It starts around puberty, and follows a prognosis which differs from patient to patient and usually patients recover spontaneously. Research shows acne rates increase around ages 14-17 for women and 16-19 for men, it is also known acne follows a more frequent and severe trajectory for men. The etiology behind this condition is debated often. Method: 100 patients selected from Bezmialem Vakıf University Hospital’s Dermatology Clinic (ages over 16) were taken into the study and divided into 2 group of 50: those who use Isotretinoin continuous vs. intermittent. Each patient was evaluated based on their acne score (mild-moderate and severe), acne scar score and the side effects. Data has been analyzed statistically using SPSS 20.0 software. Results: Both intermittent and continuous isotretinoin regimens are very well tolerated and effective as classical regimens in the treatment of acne vulgaris. However, a continuous regimen seems to be slightly superior in terms of patients’ compliance to the treatment and lower risk of relapse. Thus, this review of 100 acne patients for both groups, followed up after treatment with isotretinoin, has shown that a small number experience a variety of persistent symptoms. Some of these, such as xeroderma, dry eye syndrome, arthralgia, persistent Achilles tendonitis and possible exacerbation of eczema, were considered to be infrequent, but probable long-term side-effects. Objective: Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) represents patterned hair loss primarily affecting the scalp and is the most common form of hair loss in men. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a set of cardiometabolic risk factors. The underlying pathophysiology linking AGA and MetS is not fully established. In this study, the relationship between AGA and MetS was investigated. Method: The sample of study consisted of male patients aged between 12 and 60 years who were admitted to Bezmialem Vakıf University Dermatology Department and diagnosed as AGA. The control group consisted of men between 12 and 60 years of age with no diagnosis of AGA and previous MetS. The study included 60 patients with AGA and 60 patients without AGA. After a detailed systemic and skin examination, the diagnosis of AGA was made according to Hamilton Norwood classification. MetS was screened in these patients. The MetS was screened using 2005 Diagnostic Criteria of MetS. Results: The mean age of the patients was 41.35 years and the patients were divided into two groups as group (1) with AGA and group (2) without AGA. MetS was detected in 61.7% of patients with AGA (1). MetS was detected in 38.3% of the non-AGA group (2). According to chi-square test, which evaluated AGA and MetS relationship, p= 0.04 result was obtained. The rate of MetS was 55.2% in the group that started before AGA age of 30 years (3). The rate of MetS was 44.8% in the group that started after AGA age of 30 years (4). According to chi-square test, which evaluated the relationship between AGA early onset age and MetS, p=0.821 was obtained. Conclusion: As a result of the research, a significant relationship was found between AGA and MetS. For this reason, it is recommended that patients diagnosed with AGA be screened for MetS and, if necessary, primary prevention methods are applied. Aim: To evaluate the power of 18F-fluorocholine (FCH) positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance (PET/MR) imaging in primary hyperparathyroidism. Method: Twenty consecutive patients (female: 12, male: 8, mean age: 48.65±14.93) with primary hyperparathyroidism who were referred to Ankara University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Nuclear Medicine for F-18- FCH PET/MR study were included in the study. All patients had previously undergone neck ultrasound (USG) and Tc-99m metoxyisobutylisonitrile (MIBI) scintigraphy but parathyroid adenoma could not be localised. Results: Mean levels of serum PTH and Cancer were: 85±29.9 and 10.7 respectively. 18F-FCH PET/MR was positive for a parathyroid adenoma in 17/23 patients. In 6/17 patients, 18F-FCH PET/computerized tomography (CT) was also found negative. Parathyroid adenoma was surgically excised in 3/17 patients and F-18-FCH PET/MR was confirmed to be true positive by parathormone washout in 2/17 patients. In 12/17 positive cases, patients were clinically accepted as true positive and are now canidates for surgery. Histopathological results could not be obtained due to short follow up period. Conclusion: F-18-FCH PET/MR is an effective method for preoperative localisation of parathyroid adenomas where neck USG and Tc-99m MIBI scintigrapgy are negative. F-18 FCH PET/MR may also be considered as an effective tool in patients whom F-18FCH has also failed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: There have been efforts to differentiate malignant thyroid nodules from benign nodules by molecular imaging, mainly Tc-99m methoxyisobutylisonitrile scintigraphy. Positron emission tomography/ computed tomography (PET/CT) with F-18 or C-11 labelled choline has been used for imaging prostate carcinoma for some time and recently for detection of parathyroid adenoma in hyperparathyroidism. There are some case presentations where incidental focal thyroid uptake of F-18/C-11 choline have been reported as either benign thyroid nodules or primary thyroid malignancies. One recent study has also evaluated the cinical improtance of incidental choline uptake in the thyroid. In this study, we investigated the distribution of F-18-choline uptake in thyroid nodules with either benign or malignant cytology. Method: All F-18-choline (FCH) PET/CT studies performed for evalution of hyperparathyroidism ethiology in Ankara University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Nuclear Medicine between November 2017-December 2018 were retrospectively reevaluated. Patients with coexisting thyroid nodules and histopathological examination results are involved. Results: Among 468 F-18-FCH PET/CT studies, 60 patients had coexisting nodular thyroid disease. Thyroid fine needle aspiration biopsy, lobectomy or thyroidectomy results could be obtained in 18 patients (male: 2, female: 16, mean age: 58.71±8.58). Thyroid papillary carcinoma was detected in 4/18 patients, FLUS in 1/18 patients and benign in 13/18 patients. Mean SUVmax of thyroid nodules with papillary carcinoma were 4.12 (minimum: 2.3-maximum: 7.2). Mean largest size of the tumor was 6.83 mm (minimum: 4 mm, maximum: 11 mm). The tumor with the highest diameter had the highest SUVmax. Patient with FLUS had a nodule of 8 mm and SUVmax: 4.2. Benign nodules had a mean SUVmax: 2.35 (minimum: 1.7, maximum: 5.1). Although mean SUVmax levels of benign nodules seem to be lower than malignant nodules, statistical analysis could not be performed due to small number of patients. The overlap between SUVmax of benign and malignant nodules may be due to relatively lower F-18-choline uptake in papillary tumors less than 10 mm, that is, the partial volume effect. Conclusion: F-18-choline uptake seems to be higher in malignant nodules compared to benign nodules. Incidental F-18-choline uptake in thyroid should be further evaluated. F-18-choline may be helpful to differentiate benign-malignant nodules, especially when FNAB is reported as FLUS, if supported with further prospective data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) with age in patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Twenty-nine drug-naive ADHD subjects (24 boys, 5 girls; age 7–13; mean±SD=age 9.2±2.1) and 12 subjects with epilepsy (all diagnosed as having complex partial seizure, 6 boys, 6 girls; age 7–14; mean±SD=8.5±2.1) were included in the study. All cases of ADHD were diagnosed according to DSM-IV criteria. Cerebral blood flow was evaluated with Tc-99m-hexamethylpropyleneamine oxime (Tc99m HMPAO) brain single photon emission tomography (SPECT) during standard resting condition in all of the cases. Asymmetry indices for each region of interest were calculated. Absolute rCBF values were normalized as the absolute rCBF values divided by the whole brain absolute value. The prefrontal lobe asymmetry indices were significantly negatively correlated with age in ADHD cases (r=−0.408, P=0.025), which indicated the increased prefrontal rCBF lateralization from the right to the left side with age. When ADHD cases older than 7 years of age were compared with those with epilepsy, the ADHD cases had lower right prefrontal and frontal rCBF and higher left parietal rCBF. The epilepsy group showed no significant correlations between age and asymmetry indices and showed a different developmental trajectory for prefrontal asymmetry and right prefrontal rCBF values. The results indicated that the left hemisphere dominance in the prefrontal cortex significantly increases with age in ADHD cases. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
