We examined the degree to which 200-m and 400-m Individual Medley (IM) performance was related to sprint-, middle- and long-distance events before a swimmer reached a Top-20 world ranking. A retrospective longitudinal modelling study was conducted. Data on Top-20 swimmers between 2010 and 2018 were obtained from publicly available websites. A general linear model was used to examine associations between 200-m and 400-mIM performance (FINA ranking points) and performance in sprint, middle-distance and distance events in the previous two years. In the 200-mIM, there were significant associations (p < 0.001) between prior competition results obtained for both the 200-mIM (r = 0.80; β = 0.543) and 400-m IM (r = 0.70; β = 0.317) events before the Top-20 performance in 200-mIM in the year of the Top-20. Sprint distance events were associated (p < 0.006; r = 0.39; β = 0.088) with 200-mIM (t). Each additional 10 FINA points in the 200-mIM in each of the two years preceding the Top-20 performance. were associated with an increase of 5 FINA points in 200-mIM in in the year of the Top-20 (goodness of fit R2 = 0.70). There were similar associations (p < 0.001) for a Top 20-FINA 400-mIM performance with both 200-mIM (r = 0.72; β = 0.385) and 400-m IM (r = 0.79; β = 0.492) events in the two years before a swimmer reached the Top20. Middle-distance events were associated with 400-mIM performance (p < 0.001; r = 0.53; β = 0.163). Each additional 10 FINA points in 400-mIM in in each of the two years preceding the Top-20 performance were associated with an increase of 5 FINA points in in the year that a swimmer reached the Top-20 (goodness of fit R2 = 0.75). The specificity and complexity of the IM require a thorough preparation in this event for worldclass performances. The 200-mIM is more closely related to sprint distance events, whereas middle-distance events support preparations for the 400-mIM.

Introduction Dengue disease represents a large and growing global threat to public health, accounting for a significant burden to health systems of endemic countries. The World Health Organization’s (WHO) Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) currently recommend the use of TAK-003 dengue vaccine in high dengue burden and transmission settings for countries considering vaccination as part of their integrated management strategy for prevention and control of Dengue.Areas covered This paper describes the main conclusions of a workshop held by the Arbovirus Committee of the Latin American Society of Pediatric Infectious Diseases (SLIPE) in November 2023, to generate consensus recommendations on the introduction of this new vaccine in the region. Considerations were made regarding the molecular epidemiology of dengue infection in the Americas and the need for more precise phylogenetic classification and correlation with clinical outcome and disease severity.Expert opinion Introduction of dengue vaccine should be considered as an strategy for health entities in the region, with participation of social sectors, scientific societies, and ministries of health that could be able to create a successful vaccination program.

Introduction: Breast augmentation, a popular cosmetic surgery using devices like silicone implants, can lead to a common issue called capsular contracture (CC). This condition involves the formation of fibrous tissue around the implants and can be influenced by variables like immunological and bacterial factors. This study aimed to explore the impact of autoimmune diseases (ADs) on CC along with other factors influencing future clinical decisions. Methods: A systematic review of electronic databases was conducted using PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, EMBASE, and involving adult patients (>18) with CC and ADs after breast surgery using MeSH terminology using a broad search strategy. All searches were performed and analyzed according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, and duplicates were removed with Rayyan. Two independent investigators extracted and assessed the data involving demographics and baseline data related to CC and AD. Results: The incidence of CC varied (2.3%-4.1%). Subglandular placement and older device age raised risk. SERI Surgical Scaffold complications included necrosis, seroma, hematoma, implant loss, and infection; CC was associated with necrosis. Natrelle 410 implants showed lower 10-year CC risk than round gel implants. Acellular dermal matrix implant-based breast reconstruction with radiotherapy (RT) correlated with 20.7% post-RT CC. Previous research demonstrated no significant connection between silicone gel implants and ADs. Biofilm, surgical site infection, implant features, and interventions emerged as frequent CC risk factors. Conclusion: Finding appropriate techniques to reduce the risk factors associated with CC together with providing comprehensive patient counseling on these factors will definitely improve the patient-centered outcome of breast implant surgery.

Background and Objectives: This research describes the management of mandibular fractures in edentulous patients with atrophic mandibles and implant-retained overdentures, exploring etiologies and treatment options. Materials and Methods: A retrospective study (January 2010–December 2023) was conducted on six patients from two hospitals (Hospital Gregorio Marañón y Hospital La Paz, Madrid). The data collected included fracture etiology, treatment type, and complications. Results: All six patients were women, with a mean age of 76.33 years. The most common cause of fracture was peri-implantitis (50%). Surgical treatment (open reduction and internal fixation) was performed in five patients, with different surgical approaches and fixation methods. One patient, due to multiple comorbidities, received conservative treatment. Complications occurred in 50% of cases, including delayed healing and hypoesthesia. The average hospital stay was four days, with a mean follow-up of 34 months. Conclusions: Mandibular fractures in these patients are rare. Surgical treatment using rigid fixation plates is recommended. The rational use of bone grafting should be taken into account. Treatment depends on fracture type, patient condition, and surgeon experience.

Introduction: Acute Respiratory Infections (ARIs) are considered one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Children under five and older adults are most likely to die from this cause. Objective: To describe the behavior of infection by respiratory viruses other than SARS-CoV-2 during the pandemic in a clinic in the Colombian Caribbean. Methods: This descriptive and retrospective study evaluates the characteristics, associated comorbidities, and requirements of hospitalization or Intensive Care Unit in patients diagnosed with respiratory viral infections treated at IMAT Oncomedica clinic from July 2020 to August 2022. Results: This study evaluated 351 patients with respiratory symptoms, observing an exponential increase in cases of respiratory infection as of April 2022, with a high proportion of syncytial virus infections mainly in children under 18 years of age (22.1%) and Human Rhinovirus/Enterovirus in patients with solid tumors and hematological disorders (48.8%), the latter was associated with a higher rate of hospitalization and ICU requirement in the individuals evaluated. Conclusions: Respiratory viruses other than SARS-CoV-2, such as Rhino/Enterovirus, RSV, and adenovirus, are circulating in the population at a clinic on the Colombian Caribbean coast. The findings should motivate public health authorities to conduct more thorough surveillance in the rest of the state.

While the first 1,000 days of life are a critical period in child's development, limited information on the main determinants affecting this period in the Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region is available. Therefore, the Latin American Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society (SLIPE) held an ad hoc workshop in May 2022 with an expert panel designed to analyze the main factors impacting the development of childhood in the region during this period and the main causes of maternal infant morbimortality. The aim was to identify priorities, generate recommendations, and advise practical actions to improve this situation. Considerations were made about the challenges involved in bridging the gap that separates the region from more developed countries regarding an optimal early childhood and maternal care. Extensive discussion was conducted to reach consensus recommendations on general strategies intended to reduce maternal and infant mortality associated with infections and immune-preventable diseases during the first 1,000 days of life in LAC.

Introduction The WHO 2030 Immunization Agenda (IA-2030) harmonizes immunization activity plans at community, national, regional and global levels. Additionally, medical societies play an important role. The Latin American Group of Experts on Infant Immunization, established in 2018, advises on the harmonization, update, and optimization of infant vaccination programs in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). In September 2021, 41 such experts from 13 LAC countries met to develop recommendations for increasing regional vaccination coverage to avoid the reemergence of vaccine-preventable diseases and/or the occurrence of outbreaks. Areas covered The following items were evaluated: (i) immunization challenges before and during the COVID-19 pandemic; (ii) the status of current immunization programs, particularly infant pertussis and polio vaccination; (iii) possible solutions for overcoming vaccination challenges and achieving regional vaccination coverage targets. Expert opinion/commentary Medical societies provide valuable recommendations to guide and update vaccination schedules. In the LAC region, possible strategies to achieve target vaccination rates include the use of combination vaccines, strengthening surveillance systems, improving school attendance, advancing vaccine education and confidence, striving for vaccination equity, widening operational capacity, creating strategic alliances, and strengthening the role of medical groups. It is hoped that these recommendations will be implemented in the LAC region.

Introducción: La polineuropatía amiloidótica familiar por transtiretina, también conocida como enfermedad de Corino Andrade, es una amiloidosis hereditaria autosómica dominante producida por mutaciones en el gen de la proteína transtiretina. La clínica inicial más frecuente es un síndrome sensitivomotor clásico, las molestias comienzan en los pies y las piernas y luego se extienden a los brazos, el tronco y los nervios del cráneo. En Espana, ˜ se han descrito focos endémicos en Mallorca y en Valverde del Camino (Huelva). El objetivo del presente estudio es observar los trastornos podológicos más frecuentes que sufren los individuos de este estudio en base a la neuropatía que padecen, así como evaluar el papel del podólogo en esta enfermedad. Pacientes y métodos: Se realizó un trabajo de campo preliminar a un grupo de 12 sujetos afectados por polineuropatía amiloidótica familiar por transtiretina naturales de Valverde del Camino (Huelva). Se aplicó un protocolo de exploración podológica y se valoraron diferentes aspectos relacionados con dicha enfermedad. Resultados: EL 82% de los primeros síntomas de la enfermedad que percibió nuestro grupo de estudio fue en los pies. Los resultados más relevantes mostraron que la sensibilidad térmica, táctil, dolorosa, vibratoria y presora en los pies estaba alterada. El reflejo aquileo estaba ausente en un gran porcentaje de individuos, así como disminuida la flexión dorsal del tobillo. Discusión: La variabilidad clínica de la enfermedad indica la pertinencia de un abordaje multidisciplinar, en el cual el podólogo puede ser determinante en la detección precoz y el tratamiento de las distintas afecciones

Analizando los sitios web de universidades de diferentes países es posible construir mapas que reflejen gráficamente las relaciones que se establecen entre ellas, utilizando para ello nuevas técnicas de representación de la información como el análisis de cocitación de sitios web (análisis de cositación) y el escalamiento multidimensional (MDS). Pretendemos demostrar que estas relaciones no son ajenas al mundo real, y que siguen un patrón político, en lugar de un patrón académico, permitiéndonos construir auténticos "mapas geopolíticos" de Internet. Proponemos utilizar este tipo de representaciones como una herramienta para el análisis sociopolítico de la realidad, ya que con estos mapas obtenemos una instantánea de una región geográfica y un momento determinado, de la que es posible extraer nueva y valiosa información.Based on university website analysis, from different countries, maps can be built up that show visual relations among them. New information representation methods are used, such as web site cocitation (cositation analysis) and multidimensional scaling (MDS). An attempt has been made to demonstrate that these relations are closely tied up to the ones established in the real world, and that they suit a political pattern instead of an academical one, allowing us to generate Internet "geopolitical" maps. Our proposal is to use this kind of representations as tools for the social-political analysis of the real world environment. A snapshot can be gotten of a particular geographical region in a specific time, whereof new and valuable information can be obtained .
