The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the media industry by automating processes, with applications in data analysis, automated writing, format transformation, content personalization, and fact-checking. While AI integration offers new opportunities in journalism, it also raises ethical concerns around data privacy, algorithmic biases, transparency, and potential job displacement. This study employed qualitative interviews with media professionals and researchers to explore their perspectives on the ethical implications of AI integration in newsrooms. Interview data were analyzed to identify common themes and specific challenges related to AI use in journalism. The findings discuss issues such as the tensions between technology and journalism, ethical challenges related to AI, the evolution of professional roles in journalism, media guidelines, and potential future regulations.

BackgroundIn the context of the cytokine storm the takes place in severe COVID-19 patients, the Interleukin 6 (IL6) pathway emerges as one of the key pathways involved in the pathogenesis of this hyperinflammatory state. The strategy of blocking the inflammatory storm by targeting the IL6 is a promising therapy to mitigate mortality. The use of Tocilizumab was recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) to treat severe COVID-19 patients. However, the efficacy of Tocilizumab is variable. We hypothesize that the genetic background could be behind the efficacy of Tocilizumab in terms of mortality.MethodsWe performed a targeted-next generation sequencing of 287 genes, of which 264 belong to a community panel of ThermoFisher for the study of genetic causes of primary immunodeficiency disorders, and 23 additional genes mostly related to inflammation, not included in the original community panel. This panel was sequenced in an initial cohort of 425 COVID-19 patients, of which 232 were treated with Tocilizumab and standard therapy, and 193 with standard therapy only. Selected genetic variants were genotyped by single base extension in additional 245 patients (95 treated with Tocilizumab and 150 non-treated with Tocilizumab). Appropriate statistical analyses and internal validation, including logistic regression models, with the interaction between Tocilizumab and genetic variants, were applied to assess the impact of these genetic variants in the efficacy of Tocilizumab in terms of mortality.ResultsAge (p < 0.001) and cardiovascular disease (p < 0.001) are risk factors for mortality in COVID-19 patients. The presence of GG and TT genotypes at IL10Rβ (rs2834167) and IL1β (rs1143633) genes significantly associates with a reduced risk of mortality in patients treated with Tocilizumab (OR = 0.111; 95%CI = 0.015–0.829; p = 0.010 and OR = 0.378; 95%CI = 0.154–0.924; p = 0.028 respectively). The presence of CC genotype at IL1RN (rs2234679) significantly associates with an increased risk of mortality, but only in patients not treated with Tocilizumab (OR = 3.200; 95%CI = 1.512–6.771; p = 0.002). Exhaustive internal validation using a bootstrap method (B = 500 replicates) validated the accuracy of the predictive models.ConclusionWe developed a series of predictive models based on three genotypes in genes with a strong implication in the etiopathogenesis of COVID-19 disease capable of predicting the risk of mortality in patients treated with Tocilizumab.

Urban noise and artificial light at night (ALAN) are global pollutants affecting animal acoustic communication. A previous study that measured noise, but not ALAN, found that vermilion flycatchers produce longer songs in noisier territories. A subsequent study in another population, that measured noise and ALAN, found that males emit longer songs in brighter, but not noisier, territories. The negative result could be due a lack of sufficient noise variation in the latter study. We evaluated the contribution of noise and ALAN on song length, provided sufficient variation in noise and ALAN. We also measured song peak frequency. During the dawn chorus, we recorded songs of 41 vermilion flycatchers in two populations (UNAM and PERM), and measured noise, ALAN, and temperature. For the population with sufficient noise and ALAN variation (UNAM), we confirmed that song length was positively associated with noise; it was also negatively associated with ALAN, especially in those males recorded late in the breeding season. At UNAM, we found an overall positive association between song pitch and ALAN; additionally, males singing at relatively low ambient temperatures (12-15 °C) produced higher pitched songs as ALAN increased. Those singing closer to new moon and at relatively low ambient noise levels (43-54 dB[A]) sang higher pitched songs in brighter territories; these two results should be taken cautiously. Our results show that light, noise, date, and temperature are associated in unexpected ways with song length and pitch, potentially affecting song information content and sexual selection.

In recent decades Spain has suffered a gradual process of depopulation and exodus from rural areas to large capitals. The España Vaciada political and social movement denounces the country’s territorial inequality, while the government is working on a strategic plan to address the demographic challenge. At the media level, there is concern about citizens’ access to a local and quality journalistic service, key to the strengthening of communities and their democratic functioning. The main objective of this research is to explore the phenomenon of news deserts in Spain, identifying the areas that can be considered news deserts and those that are at risk of becoming so, based on the mapping of digital media in the country. The characteristics of the digital media of the autonomous communities with the highest presence of news deserts are studied to ascertain whether the risk factors of population or richness index are connected to their appearance. The results reveal that 6,304 (77.53%) Spanish municipalities can be considered news deserts, inhabited by 11.6 million people, 24.51% of the country’s total population. In addition, another 523 municipalities are at risk of becoming news deserts. In the regions with the largest number of news deserts, there is a clear concentration of media in the main capitals and a weak ecosystem of local and hyperlocal media. Depopulation is the main risk factor in the loss of media and news coverage in local communities.

Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a sustainable technology resulting from the synergism between biotechnology and electrochemistry, exploiting diverse fundamental aspects for the development of numerous applications, including wastewater treatment and energy production. Nevertheless, these devices currently present several limitations and operational restrictions associated with their performance, efficiency, durability, cost, and competitiveness against other technologies. Accordingly, the synthesis of nD nanomaterials (n = 0, 1, 2, and 3) of particular interest in MFCs, methods of assembling a biofilm-based electrode material, in situ and ex situ physicochemical characterizations, electrochemistry of materials, and phenomena controlling electron transfer mechanisms are critically revisited in order to identify the steps that determine the rate of electron transfer, while exploiting novel materials that enhance the interaction that arises between microorganisms and electrodes. This is expected to pave the way for the consolidation of this technology on a large scale to access untapped markets.

Objetivo. Proporcionar recomendaciones para la detección temprana de pacientes con alto riesgo de desarrollar cáncer de pulmón (CP) en el primer nivel de atención y su referencia oportuna. Material y métodos. Se realizó una búsqueda detallada de la evidencia científica disponible para responder las preguntas de investigación clínica y se utilizó el Panel Delphi modificado para lograr un consenso entre expertos. Resultados. Se generaron 14 recomendaciones siguiendo los estándares de una GPC. Conclusión. El CP representa un problema de salud pública en México; por ello, esta guía establece recomendaciones que apoyan la toma de decisiones sobre la detección precoz y la referencia de pacientes con sospecha de CP en el primer nivel de atención.

Se describe una serie de casos de pacientes pediátricos, con encefalitis autoinmune (EA) por anticuerpos contra el receptor N-metil-D-aspartato (NMDA), atendidos en hospitales de tercer nivel en México y Paraguay, y su evolución con inmunoterapia. Los síntomas predominantes fueron fiebre, trastornos del sueño, alucinaciones, discinesias, movimientos coreo-atetósicos, espasticidad, convulsiones y disautonomías. Los pacientes fueron trata- dos con inmunoglobulina humana y metilprednisolona como primera línea, y en algunos casos se requirió el uso de plasmaféresis y anti-CD20. El inicio oportuno de tratamiento se relacionó con una menor estancia hospitalaria y menor desarrollo de complicaciones. Se debe enfatizar el diagnóstico oportuno, implementando su identificación a partir del cuadro clínico, sustentando el diagnóstico con pruebas serológicas adecuadas y hallazgos en LCR, y de este modo favorecer el inicio de tratamiento temprano para reducir complicacio- nes y días de internación.

In recent years, media has adapted to the logic of each new social network to respond to renewed consumption habits and journalists have developed new roles on these platforms. TikTok is an emerging platform with its own influencer culture and in which the main audiences are the millennial and centennial generations. The main objective of this study is to analyze the presence of journalists on TikTok through the type of content and strategies used in adapting to this platform. The research is based on methodological triangulation. First, a database of journalists on TikTok (n1 = 212) was developed and the profiles were reviewed. Second, a questionnaire survey (n2 = 63) was developed. Finally, a content analysis (n3 = 520) of profiles exceeding 100,000 followers was conducted. This research provides a first description of the activity of journalists on TikTok, where a variety of roles, usages, and strategies are identified, beyond those of their profession. They join the of-the-moment platform with different purposes (to inform, entertain, or introduce themselves) and targets (new audiences, young people, fans). Journalists adapt their presence to the TikTok social media logic, seeking a space of influence on a platform that is the natural habitat of younger generations.

Esta investigación pretende identificar las preferencias de consumo informativo de la ciudadanía española, atendiendo a la elección de canales y marcas periodísticas, y a las razones que las justifican. Se analizan también las condiciones de suscripción a los medios y se evalúa el uso de canales digitales y dispositivos móviles para el acceso. Se trata de una investigación cuantitativa fundamentada en una encuesta dirigida al universo de los ciudadanos españoles mayores de edad (n=700). Los resultados revelan que los españoles prefieren los medios y marcas tradicionales y sus ediciones digitales para informarse, aunque los nativos digitales ocupan un lugar relevante. Internet y los dispositivos móviles se normalizan como vías de acceso a las noticias y su consumo a través de las redes sociales es mayoritario entre los jóvenes. La confianza y la proximidad son los principales motivos para la elección de medios y canales.

Resumen: Introducción: en los procedimientos de extracción de electrodos, la vía femoral se usa cuando la vía superior ha fracasado. Objetivo: describir la incidencia, el éxito, las complicaciones y los predictores de uso de la vía femoral. Métodos: se realizó un análisis de la incidencia del uso de la vía femoral y los factores predictores en pacientes a quienes se les realizó extracción de electrodos entre noviembre de 2011 y noviembre de 2017. Resultados: se incluyeron 85 pacientes, con edad media de 62,36 ± 11,15 años. El 38,9% de los dispositivos eran marcapasos. Se extrajeron 135 electrodos, 59,3% de fijación pasiva. La mediana de tiempo desde el implante fue de 102 (60-174) meses. Se empleó la ruta femoral en el 25,9% de los procedimientos. Se obtuvo éxito clínico en el 92,9% de los pacientes. La extracción no fue exitosa en el 22,7% de los procedimientos cuando se usó la vía femoral, en comparación con el 1,6% cuando se usó la vía superior (p 0,004). La extracción no fue completa en el 36,4% de los procedimientos cuando se empleó la vía femoral en comparación con el 9,5% por vía superior (p 0,007).Los factores que predijeron el empleo de la ruta femoral fueron la presencia de electrodos de fijación pasiva [OR IC 95% 13,69 (3,06-62,5) p 0,001] y el tiempo desde el implante del electrodo [OR IC 95% por cada 10 meses 1,04 (1,00-1,09) p 0,044]. Conclusiones: se empleó la ruta femoral en el 25,9% de los procedimientos. No fue eficaz en el 22,7% de las intervenciones. Los factores que predijeron su utilización fueron la presencia de electrodos de fijación pasiva y el tiempo desde el implante del electrodo. Abstract: Introduction: The femoral route is used in electrode removal procedures when the upper route has failed. Objective: To describe the incidence, success rate, complications and predictive factors for the use of the femoral route. Methods: An analysis was performed on the incidence of use of the femoral route and the predictive factors in patients in whom electrode removal was carried out between November 2011 and November 2017. Results: The study included 85 patients with a mean age of 62.36 ± 11.5 years. Pacemakers made up 38.9% of the devices. A total of 135 electrodes, 59.3% of passive fixation, were removed. The median time since the implant was 102 (60-174) months. The femoral route was used in 25.9% of the procedures. Clinical success was achieved in 92.9% of the patients. The removal was not successful in 22.7% of the procedures when the femoral route was used, compared to 1.6% when the upper route was used (P = .004). The removal was not completed in 36.4% of the procedures when the femoral route was used, compared to 9.5% with the upper route (P = .007).The factors that predicted the use of the femoral route were the presence of passive-fixation electrodes (OR = 13.69: 95% CI; 3.06 – 62.5, P = .001), and the time since the electrodes were implanted (OR = 1.04, 95% CI; 1.00 – 1.09, P = .044, for every 10 months). Conclusions: The femoral route was employed in 25.9% of the procedures. It was not effective in 22.7% of the interventions. The factors that predicted its use were the presence of passive-fixation electrodes and the time since the electrode implant.

This article reflects on the conceptualisation and practise of journalism in European digital native media. The way news is produced and consumed in the digital era knocks down the boundaries that once divided professionals, citizens, and activists. At the same time, significant changes highlighted in recent studies call for a new theoretical and practical approach that goes beyond the dominant perspective of technological determinism. In relation with previous research, we have selected innovative digital media platforms (De Correspondent, Heidi.news, Eldiario.es, IlPost, Mediapart, and Observador), and we have analysed the types of journalism they set out to produce, as gleaned from their public-facing communications and interviews with the platforms’ founders and editors, comparing their stated goals with the journalism they produce and, lastly, we commented on changes in journalism. Digital native media explore renewed fields for journalism. The present analysis allows identifying the emergence of a series of trends in digital native media, which show a coexistence of traditional and new principles. Beyond the technological impact, the new media respond to the needs of society by incorporating the citizen as a reason for its purpose and as a collaborator in production processes. On the other hand, new players and an updated role of journalists come into play with innovative proposals designed for the current multiplatform and mobile scenario.

Antecedentes: El asma sigue siendo una patología respiratoria crónica frecuente en México. Se han descrito nuevos métodos para el diagnóstico y tratamiento conforme se renuevan las guías internacionales. Objetivo: Crear la plataforma nacional Manejo Integral del Asma (MIA), para el desarrollo de lineamientos actualizados con base en evidencia. Métodos: Se utilizó el método ADAPTE. El grupo de desarrollo de MIA estuvo integrado por expertos en neumología, alergología y metodología y representantes de 13 instituciones y sociedades de especialidades que manejan asma. Las guías internacionales de referencia (seleccionadas con AGREE-II) fueron GINA 2020, GEMA 5.0, BTS/SIGN 2019 y consenso ATS/ERS 2014-2019. En MIA se aborda sospecha de asma, diagnóstico, tratamiento y grupos especiales. Se formularon preguntas clínicas clave sobre tratamiento en los pasos 1 a 3, biomarcadores y asma grave. Resultados: Con base en evidencia, seguridad, costo y realidad local, el grupo nuclear desarrolló respuestas. Mediante proceso Delphi, el grupo amplio de desarrollo sugirió ajustes hasta que se logró el consenso. Conclusión: El documento generado contiene múltiples figuras y algoritmos, está sólidamente basado en evidencia acerca del manejo del asma y fue ajustado para México con participación de diferentes sociedades para su desarrollo; no se incluyeron lineamientos para la crisis asmática.

Las narrativas digitales de no ficción interactiva conforman un área de desarrollo reciente en la confluencia de ámbitos diversos. La representación de la realidad se aborda con formatos nuevos, adaptados e híbridos. Se trata de un contexto cambiante, marcado por la tecnología, que requiere un enfoque abierto para integrar las estrategias de participación, inmersión, gamificación y transmedia. La investigación aborda el análisis del estado actual de las principales propuestas de narrativa digital de no ficción interactiva en las formas del documental y el periodismo, la evaluación de la experiencia del usuario en el documental interactivo con un diseño experimental y la identificación de espacios de experimentación y tendencias.

Fact-checking has become one of the most relevant activities of recent years, as a result of the increase in the flow of fake news and of the ease to spread news through platforms such as social media. The goal of the research is to assess the task of fact-checking developed by initiatives that use Spanish as a vehicle for comparing inaccurate and false information. We carried out a case study of 19 international projects that use Spanish as the main language to materialise their fact-checking actions and the analysis of contents published aims at understanding where these companies develop their activities, how are them internally organized and which methods they use to translate the data obtained to the audience. Results show that most of fact-checking projects in Spanish –launched most of them in the period 2014-2016– remain active. In South America, these organizations have more weight. Most of them have a journalistic nature, although there is a large number of civic and independent projects. Among strategies for verification, text is the preferred formula, although some innovative methods to present the degree of accuracy of assessed contents have been found.

An experimental study is presented to account for the implementation of a two-phase closed thermosyphon pipe, for energy-saving purposes, in air conditioning systems in the context of COVID-19. The experimental setup consisted of a 0.5 m × 0.0127 m type L copper pipe which was employed as the body of the heat exchanger; an electric resistance heater of 0.1 m length located at the bottom; and a 0.25 m length water-cooled concentric condenser located at the top. The evaluation was conducted employing acetone, ethanol, and distilled water as working fluids; ranging the heat supplied at the evaporator from 25 to 125 W and the filling ratio from 20% to 40% of the total inner volume of the thermosyphon. From the data obtained, it was found that ethanol is the working fluid most susceptible to changes in operation conditions. Contrarily, distilled water was found to deliver consistent performance, up to a point that, for the analysed setup, it is considered to be independent of both, heat flow supplied at the evaporator and thermosyphon filling ratio. Meanwhile, acetone was found to be the only fluid tested that displays a directly proportional behaviour between heat absorption and dissipation. From compiling experimental data, response surfaces were constructed and used as direct and rough optimization tools. The information provided by this approach is considered to be particularly useful and is introduced for modelling and design purposes. El periodismo digital ha vivido transformaciones constantes en sus primeros 25 años de historia, en los que la forma de contar historias ha cambiado conforme las diferentes especies del ecosistema aparecieron y se interrelacionaron. Superada una fase de significativa experimentación en los formatos narrativos adaptados al medio digital, es necesario evaluar los aspectos que permanecen y su evolución en la producción de los cibermedios. A partir del análisis de contenido en una selección de diez cibermedios y entrevistas con profesionales, se identifican los formatos y las características que se han desplegado con un desarrollo narrativo. Los resultados indican que existe una experimentación significativa que ha llevado determinados rasgos y formas de expresión de la disrupción a la consolidación, en función al grado de adopción e innovación, aunque todavía es extraordinaria la presencia de los proyectos multimedia e interactivos complejos en la oferta informativa cotidiana.

Background: Documenting the patterns of oral anticoagulation therapy (OAT) is essential to prevent thromboembolic complications of nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). Objective: To report the patterns of OAT according to age and thromboembolic risk in patients included in CARMEN-AF, a nationwide registry of NVAF in Mexico, an upper middle-income country. Material and methods: There were 1,423 consecutive patients =18 years old and with at least one thromboembolic risk factor enrolled in the CARMEN-AF Registry at their regular clinical visit during a three-year period. They were analyzed according to 1) age, 2) AF type, and 3) CHA2DS2-VASc score. Results: Overall, 16.4% of patients did not receive antithrombotic treatment, 19.4% received antiplatelet drugs (APD), 29.2% vitamin K antagonists (VKA), and 34.6% direct oral anticoagulants (DOAC). With increasing age, the proportion of subjects treated with VKA decreased significantly from 36.2% in subjects 2DS2-VASc =2) compared with the moderate risk group (41% in CHA2DS2-VASc = 1). Conclusions: VKA use for NVAF in Mexico decreased in relation to increasing age. The proportion of DOAC therapy was the same in all age groups. Nevertheless, elderly patients with high thromboembolic risk received a suboptimal thromboprophylaxis. These data could help to improve gaps in the implementation of global guidelines. Highlights: CARMEN-AF is a nationwide multi-centric registry seeking to bridge the data gap on anticoagulation therapy for NVAF in Mexico. Elderly patients are more prone to receive suboptimal OAT for NVAF. DOAC were less frequently used in high thromboembolic risk patients (CHA2DS2-VASc =2).

Social media are increasingly integrated into media routines as channels to gain access, verify and spread information. Likewise, as mobile news consumption is standardized, the media experiment with native formats for these platforms. This study analyzes how the media use Instagram Stories, to identify the strategies that they apply, as well as the adaptation and innovation features on this platform. A content analysis was conducted from a sample of 17 online media that use Instagram Stories, both legacy and digital native. The results show an upward potential in ephemeral news production, one that is increasingly developed and unique.

Sea surface temperature (SST) is a fundamental physical variable for understanding, quantifying and predicting complex interactions between the ocean and the atmosphere. Such processes determine how heat from the sun is redistributed across the global oceans, directly impacting large- and small-scale weather and climate patterns. The provision of daily maps of global SST for operational systems, climate modeling and the broader scientific community is now a mature and sustained service coordinated by the Group for High Resolution Sea Surface Temperature (GHRSST) and the CEOS SST Virtual Constellation (CEOS SST-VC). Data streams are shared, indexed, processed, quality controlled, analyzed, and documented within a Regional/Global Task Sharing (R/GTS) framework, which is implemented internationally in a distributed manner. Products rely on a combination of low-Earth orbit infrared and microwave satellite imagery, geostationary orbit infrared satellite imagery, and in situ data from moored and drifting buoys, Argo floats, and a suite of independent, fully characterized and traceable in situ measurements for product validation (Fiducial Reference Measurements, FRM). Research and development continues to tackle problems such as instrument calibration, algorithm development, diurnal variability, derivation of high-quality skin and depth temperatures, and areas of specific interest such as the high latitudes and coastal areas. In this white paper, we review progress versus the challenges we set out 10 years ago in a previous paper, highlight remaining and new research and development challenges for the next 10 years (such as the need for sustained continuity of passive microwave SST using a 6.9 GHz channel), and conclude with needs to achieve an integrated global high-resolution SST observing system, with focus on satellite observations exploited in conjunction with in situ SSTs. The paper directly relates to the theme of Data Information Systems and also contributes to Ocean Observing Governance and Ocean Technology and Networks within the OceanObs2019 objectives. Applications of SST contribute to all the seven societal benefits, covering Discovery; Ecosystem Health & Biodiversity; Climate Variability & Change; Water, Food, & Energy Security; Pollution & Human Health; Hazards and Maritime Safety; and the Blue Economy.

Thymidine kinase 1 (TK1) phosphorylates thymidine nucleosides to generate thymidine monophosphate. This reaction belongs to the pyrimidine salvage route that is phylogenetically conserved. In the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana, TK activity contributes to maintain nuclear and organellar genome integrity by providing deoxythymidine-triphosphate (dTTP) for DNA synthesis. Arabidopsis has two TK1 genes (TK1a and TK1b) and double mutants show an albino phenotype and develop poorly. In contrast, maize (Zea mays L.) has a single TK1 (ZmTK1) gene and mutant plants are albino and display reduced genome copy number in chloroplasts. We studied the role of ZmTK1 during development and genotoxic stress response by assessing its activity at different developmental stages and by complementing Arabidopsis tk1 mutants. We found that ZmTK1 transcripts and activity are present during germination and throughout maize development. We show that ZmTK1 translocation to chloroplasts depends on a 72-amino-acid N-signal and its plastid localization is consistent with its ability to complement Arabidopsis tk1b mutants which are hypersensitive to ciprofloxacin (CIP), a genotoxic agent to organellar DNA. Also, ZmTK1 partly complemented the Arabidopsis double mutant plants during development. Our results contribute to the understanding of TK1 function in monocot species as an organellar enzyme for genome replication and repair.

Este artículo tiene por objetivo principal aproximarse a las nuevas narrativas de no ficción interactiva en medios de comunicación audiovisuales. En el contexto actual, marcado por la convergencia, asistimos a la hibridación de formas y lenguajes en el ecosistema mediático. Los cibermedios presentan una caracterización singular y los límites entre prensa, radio y televisión son cada vez más difusos. La innovación y la búsqueda de un valor añadido han llevado a la confluencia del periodismo con las narrativas transmedia, así como al desarrollo de nuevos formatos, como el documental interactivo, en la estrategia digital de las televisiones como cibermedios. El estudio cuenta con una metodología exploratorio-descriptiva, en la cual se relacionan y clasifican los documentales interactivos producidos por cibermedios en el año 2016, para obtener una visión panorámica de este género en el último año. En segundo lugar, se plantea un estudio de caso comparativo entre Párkinson, que tiemble el camino (RTVE, 2016) y Hacked (Al Jazeera, 2016). Ambos proyectos proceden de medios audiovisuales, y en ellos el análisis se centra en el docugame, que aporta novedades para el usuario, el contenido y el medio a través de la ludificación, la simulación y la búsqueda de un mayor engagement de los usuarios.

Abstract Background Arm transplantations are performed less frequently than forearm and hand transplantations. We present the surgical and microsurgical technique and its relationship with the clinical results in a patient with bilateral arm transplantation. Methods A 51-year-old male patient underwent bilateral arm transplantation in October 2015. The right arm was transplanted at the glenohumeral joint. The vascular repair was at the axillary level, and the nerves were repaired at their origin. The total ischemia time was 3 hours and 48 minutes. The left arm was transplanted at the midhumeral level; all muscles were completely transplanted. The nerves were repaired at the distal third of the arm. Additionally, terminolateral neurorrhaphy was performed from the donor musculocutaneous nerve to the recipient radial nerve. The total ischemia time was 6 hours and 35 minutes. Results At 15 months posttransplantation, the right shoulder had an abduction of 90 degrees and muscle strength of M4; flexion of 100 degrees and M4; internal and external rotation of M1; elbow flexion of 120 degrees and M3; elbow extension of M5; pronosupination of M2; and wrist extension of M2. There was no mobility in the fingers. The left transplanted limb had total elbow flexion and extension of M5, pronosupination of M2, wrist extension of M4, and finger flexion of M2. Both extremities had thermal sensitivity that allowed discrimination of cold and heat with residual deep pressure. Conclusion Although the functional results of arm transplantation are so far unknown, they may be considered beneficial compared with the devastating disability caused by arm amputation.

En este artículo se hace un estudio de las correspondientes crisis en los Estados Unidos y en México, distinguiendo entre su aspecto financiero y el económico. Se enfocan las crisis financieras como ciclos naturales que pueden terminar en recesiones económicas, más o menos profundas, en cuyo caso estarían desempeñando una función profiláctica para eliminar el exceso de inversión generado durante la etapa de expansión. La intervención del Banco Central resulta muy importante para mitigar las restricciones de liquidez y de esa manera atemperar la depreciación de activos y, en su caso, la profundidad de la recesión. El estudio se sustenta en el modelo de la crisis financiera propuesto por Minsky y Kindleberger, así como en el análisis técnico del comportamiento del precio de las acciones.

The Spanish educational system is characterized by the coexistence of three different models of production and provision of education: public, subsidized and private. Within the privately-owned centers not under the subsidized system, private schools of a social nature stand out. These schools, whose main source of financing comes from the fees paid by the students' families, must implement financial strategies that guarantee their economic viability and allow them to develop their educational project. In a highly competitive environment, the implementation of sound financial strategies and the development of educational innovation policies are critical to ensure their survival. In this context, this study analyzes a methodological proposal that can contribute to guide this strategic policy based on two fundamental pillars: the financial viability of the center and educational innovation through the application of new technologies and innovative teaching strategies. To this end, the case method has been used as the main methodology, obtaining results that considerably improve student satisfaction and that represent economic improvements of more than €100,000 per year. From these results it has been possible to identify different possible scenarios that can condition the financial viability of the educational center, the dropout rate and the academic performance of the students.

The rise of digital technologies and their educational applications increasingly require the development of digital skills among university faculty. This study focuses on examining the level of digital competencies of university faculty and identifying their conditioning factors. To achieve this objective, an ex post facto methodological design with surveys is used. A sample of 216 university teachers from different regions of Ecuador was used. The non-parametric Chi-square test was used to validate the hypothesis of independence of the variables. The results obtained show that university faculty have a mostly intermediate level of digital skills, which is independent of gender, but dependent on the generational cohort. In particular, it is found that younger teachers (millennials) have a more advanced level of digital skills, although this relationship is not very strong. On the other hand, we observe the positive influence of the university's strategic leadership in terms of technological adoption on the development of teachers' digital skills. Universities with better technological resources and with training plans focused on the pedagogical application of technology have teachers with a more advanced level of digital skills. All of this leads to the recommendation that education policies should prioritise actions that promote the development of digital competencies among university faculty

We have demonstrated that Leishmania spp. grown as promastigotes, are sensitive to the K+ channel inhibitors 4-aminopyridine and glibenclamide. Their host cells, the macrophages, are not affected by similar concentrations of the drugs. We have also initiated the molecular characterization of the mechanisms involved in the development of drug resistance to glibenclamide by the parasite. Therefore, we have selected experimentally and begun to characterize the Venezuelan Leishmania (Leishmania) strain, NR resistant to glibenclamide [NR(Gr)]. The analysis of genomic DNA evidenced the existence of a fragment which apparently is amplified in NR(Gr). The fragment recognized by the pgpA probe, related to the Leishmania P-glycoprotein family and which was originally isolated from L. tarentolae, showed a size polymorfism between the sensitive and the resistant strain. These results suggest that the development of resistance to glibenclamide in the strain NR(Gr) might be associated with the amplification of the ltpgpA or related gene(s)

This article examines the future governance of areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ) in the wake of the new 2023 United Nations Agreement using the work on the Sargasso Sea as a prototype. After discussing the legal framework and current challenges facing the ABNJ regime, some details are provided on open ocean data collection technologies, including big data and artificial intelligence (AI), used in support of ocean governance. Based on a technology-enabled ocean governance cycle, the role that data, information technology and data-science can play in incorporating empirical scientific knowledge into policy and decision-making is examined with a focus on the open ocean. The article concludes with a vision of future high seas governance based on the 2023 Agreement and how big data and AI can play a crucial role in meeting the exciting challenges that the new agreement poses.

Abstract Global gridded data sets of observed extremes indices underpin assessments of changes in climate extremes. However, similar efforts to enable the assessment of indices relevant to different sectors of society have been missing. Here we present a data set of sector‐specific indices, based on daily station data, that extends the HadEX3 data set of climate extremes indices. These additional indices, which can be used singly or in combinations, have been recommended by the World Meteorological Organization and are intended to empower decision makers in different sectors with accurate historical information about how sector‐relevant measures of the climate are changing, especially in regions where in situ daily temperature and rainfall data are hard to come by. The annual and/or monthly indices have been interpolated on to a 1.875° × 1.25° longitude‐latitude grid for 1901–2018. We show changes in globally‐averaged time series of these indices in comparison with reanalysis products. Changes in temperature‐based indices are consistent with global scale warming, with days with Tmax > 30°C (TXge30) increasing virtually everywhere with potential impacts on crop fertility. At the other end of the scale, the number of days with Tmin

Zn–Mn alloy coatings with small amounts of Mn (Zn-0.19 wt.% Mn, Zn-0.21 wt.% Mn, Zn-0.26 wt.% Mn and Zn-0.34 wt.% Mn) were formed by electrodeposition, onto pre-treated Mg substrates (Mgt) covered with a Zn film (Zn/Mgt). The chemical composition in depth profiles, morphological and structural characteristics of the Zn–Mn coatings on Zn/Mgt (labeled as Zn–Mn/(Zn/Mgt)) were analyzed using Glow Discharge Optical Emission Spectroscopy (GD-OES), Scanning Electron Microscopy/Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). When the manganese content was greater than 0.19 wt.%, the results reveal the formation of two Zn–Mn phases: η-ZnMn and ζ-MnZn13; while the formation of the ζ-MnZn13 phase was favored by increasing the Mn content in the alloy. On the other hand, microhardness, wear resistance, and coefficient of friction significantly increase when coating Zn/Mgt substrate with the Zn–Mn alloy. The corrosion performance of this alloy was evaluated by potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The degradation rate in Hank's solutions of the pristine Mg substrate (0.29 mm yr−1) decreases due to the Zn–Mn coating. Furthermore, the degradation rate of Zn–Mn was further decreased from 0.051 to 0.022 mm yr−1, by varying the amount of Mn in the Zn–Mn alloy from 0.19 to 0.26 wt.% Mn, respectively. However, the rate of degradation increases up to 0.064 mm yr−1 at higher Mn content, Zn-0.34 wt.% Mn. Therefore, the microhardness, wear volume, and degradation rate of Zn–Mn/(Zn/Mg) in Hank's solution can be modulated by varying the Mn composition in the alloy.

Objective: This study aims to characterise the phenomenon of depopulation in the rural environment from the point of view of the opportunities offered by technology-based rural entrepreneurship as a lever that promotes population fixation and the economic dynamisation of the most depressed territories subject to the economic and social imbalances generated by depopulation. Research Design & Methods: The research approach is based on the application of case studies as an empirical research technique. In particular, the strategy for the promotion of rural start-ups in CyL - the largest European region and one of the Spanish regions most affected by the negative consequences of depopulation - is analysed. Findings: Empirical evidence has shown that economic conditions have impacted the extent and duration of migration flows from rural areas to a more industrialised urban environment. Thus, in recent decades, the spatial distribution of the population has taken shape characterised by strong concentrations in large cities as opposed to the dispersion and low density of the population in large areas of the territory. Implications / Recommendations: The promotion of rural entrepreneurship through the development of specific actions to encourage the creation of start-up companies could be a solution to the demographic challenge. Contribution / Value Added: The creation of a regional entrepreneurial ecosystem has been possible owing to the financing, growth, scaling, and business internationalisation programmes promoted by the regional government. The Arctic is one of the most important regions in the world’s oceans for understanding the impacts of a changing climate. Yet, it is also difficult to measure because of extreme weather and ice conditions. In this work, we directly compare four datasets from the Group for High-Resolution Sea Surface Temperature (GHRSST) with a NASA Saildrone deployment along the Alaskan Coast and the Bering Sea and Bering Strait. The four datasets used are the Remote Sensing Systems Microwave Infrared Optimally Interpolated (MWIR) product, the Canadian Meteorological Center (CMC) product, the Daily Optimally Interpolated Product (DOISST), and the Operational Sea Surface Temperature and Ice Analysis (OSTIA) product. Spatial sea surface temperature (SST) gradients were derived for both the Saildrone deployment and GHRSST products, with the GHRSST products collocated with the Saildrone deployment. Overall, statistics indicate that the OSTIA product had a correlation of 0.79 and a root mean square difference of 0.11 °C/km when compared with Saildrone. CMC had the highest correlation of 0.81. Scatter plots indicate that OSTIA had the slope closest to one, thus best reproducing the magnitudes of the Saildrone gradients. Differences increased at latitudes > 65°N where sea ice would have a greater impact. A trend analysis was then performed on the gradient fields. Overall, positive trends in gradients occurred in areas along the coastal regions. A negative trend occurred at approximately 60°N. A major finding of this study is that future work needs to revolve around the impact of changing ice conditions on SST gradients. Another major finding is that a northward shift in the southern ice edge occurred after 2010 with a maxima at approximately 2019. This indicates that the shift of the southern ice edge is not gradual but has dramatically increased over the last decade. Future work needs to revolve around examining the possible causes for this northward shift.

The company at the service of today's society is reinventing itself to satisfy people's needs in a more efficient and adapted way. Globalization and digitization promote increasing interaction and new forms of economic organization such as collaborative economy. However, can it be understood that this new business model, more than others, has as its raison d'être in the search for the "common good"? A first approach suggests the presence of values related to collaboration between equals aiming at a common good. However, the possible existence of a profit motive and the labor relations framework in which certain activities are carried out have created a debate on their ethical qualification. In this context, considering 278 companies in the collaborative economy sector, the relationship between the concept of "common good" and the collaborative economy is analyzed, while examining whether these new realities have an explicit ethical intention (of search for goods for people). According to the results, it is not possible to assert that these platforms have an ethical concern, but it is observed that they are in line with the common good and implicitly contribute to the service of society. The interactions arising in Electrochemical Double Layer Capacitors (EDLC) made up of commercial activated carbons (DLC 50 Norit, TF-B520 and Kuraray YP-80 F), acetylene carbon black (AB) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) are analyzed with the aim of maximizing their specific capacitances. AB is varied (0–10 wt%, 0–20 wt% only for further exploration of TF-B520) to minimize its content, while maintaining fixed the PTFE composition. The best rate capabilities are obtained at 5 wt% AB for TF-B520 and Kuraray YP-80 F, and 4 wt% AB for DLC 50 Norit on the basis of cyclic voltammetry, charge/discharge curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. These results strongly depend on a minimum amount of AB in the composite determined through conductivity measurements (i.e. percolation threshold), which guarantees its electronic conductivity. According to N2 adsorption/desorption and textural studies, the critical property defining the electrode supercapacitance is its specific surface area (SSA), relying considerably on the surface area of the pristine AC (main component), regardless of its pore volume and size, or AB area. The specific capacitances present the following trend: TF-B520 (1711–1830 m2 g−1) > > (1356–1571 m2 g−1) > (1319–1504 m2 g−1). Viscoelasticity properties of the composites are less important than conductivity or SSA, since mechanical pressure alters the AC-AB interparticle network, generating better percolating media. In order to optimize specific capacitance, a balance is required between electronic conductivity (percolation in the porous media by AB) and ionic transference (specific surface area of AC) in the electrode composite.

The ECOSTRESS push-whisk thermal radiometer on the International Space Station provides the highest spatial resolution temperature retrievals over the ocean that are currently available. It is a precursor to the future TRISHNA (CNES/ISRO), SBG (NASA), and LSTM (ESA) 50 to 70 m scale missions. Radiance transfer simulations and triple collocations with in situ ocean observations and NOAA L2P geostationary satellite ocean temperature retrievals were used to characterize brightness temperature biases and their sources in ECOSTRESS Collection 1 (software Build 6) data for the period 12 January 2019 to 31 October 2022. Radiometric noise, non-uniformities in the focal plane array, and black body temperature dynamics were characterized in ocean scenes using L1A raw instrument data, L1B calibrated radiances, and L2 skin temperatures. The mean brightness temperature biases were −1.74, −1.45, and −1.77 K relative to radiance transfer simulations in the 8.78, 10.49, and 12.09 µm wavelength bands, respectively, and skin temperatures had a −1.07 K bias relative to in situ observations. Cross-track noise levels range from 60 to 600 mK and vary systematically along the focal plane array and as a function of wavelength band and scene temperature. Overall, radiometric uncertainty is most strongly influenced by cross-track noise levels and focal plane non-uniformity. Production of an ECOSTRESS sea surface temperature product that meets the requirements of the SST community will require calibration methods that reduce the biases, noise levels, and focal plane non-uniformities.

Characterizing temperature and salinity (T-S) conditions is a standard framework in oceanography to identify and describe deep water masses and their dynamics. At the surface, this practice is hindered by multiple air–sea–land processes impacting T-S properties at shorter time scales than can easily be monitored. Now, however, the unsurpassed spatial and temporal coverage and resolution achieved with satellite sea surface temperature (SST) and salinity (SSS) allow us to use these variables to investigate the variability of surface processes at climate-relevant scales. In this work, we use SSS and SST data, aggregated into domains using a cluster algorithm over a T-S diagram, to describe the surface characteristics of the California Current System (CCS), validating them with in situ data from uncrewed Saildrone vessels. Despite biases and uncertainties in SSS and SST values in highly dynamic coastal areas, this T-S framework has proven useful in describing CCS regional surface properties and their variability in the past and in real time, at novel scales. This analysis also shows the capacity of remote sensing data for investigating variability in land–air–sea interactions not previously possible due to limited in situ data.
