Coastal retreat processes are usually associated with many anthropogenic actions, such as the regulation of river basins, the construction of hydraulic storm defence works in coastal areas and the building of housing on the beach. To all of this, we should also add the increase in sea levels due to the effect of climate change. The chosen area of study corresponds to the coastal area of the municipality of Guardamar del Segura, belonging to the Segura River Basin. The methodology applied in this study comprised the gathering of historical information, the extraction of data using GIS, the compiling of data using official organisations and the analysis of all these data from a geographical perspective. The obtained results show the chronology of the regulation works in the Segura Basin and their relationship with the reduction and negative trend in average ordinary flows (1940–2023) and the extraordinary, swelled flows recorded in the period 1994–2023. Furthermore, the coastlines from 1923 to 2023 were mapped, enabling us to determine the evolution of the coastline retreat processes experienced in the dune ridge of Guardamar del Segura and the increase in the frequency of impacts due to storms on Babilonia Beach. Finally, data on wind, waves and marine currents recorded at a gauging station were incorporated, enabling us to understand their impact on this coastal sector. The results obtained are discussed, and they indicate the need to incorporate data on sediment into the study in order to complete it. The conclusions reveal the existence of a relationship between all these anthropogenic elements in the beach erosion processes experienced in the village of Guardamar del Segura.

En la actualidad, los contenidos sobre los riesgos naturales están teniendo un interés notable en el ámbito educativo debido a la acción formativa y de concienciación de los más jóvenes. El objetivo de este trabajo es examinar las imágenes que se recopilan en los libros de texto de Ciencias Sociales (3er ciclo de Educación Primaria) que hacen referencia a riesgos naturales, con la finalidad de analizar el tipo de riesgo, grado de catastrofismo, y el contexto territorial al que se adscriben para explicar estos fenómenos en España. A partir de la revisión de las principales editoriales españolas (Anaya, Bromera, Santillana, SM, Vicens Vives), los resultados obtenidos ponen de manifiesto que, de 640 imágenes identificadas, la mayoría hacen referencia a las sequías (38,2%) e inundaciones (29,4%). Respecto al grado de catastrofismo, el 67,6% se presentan con esta finalidad, y en cuanto al contexto territorial, en la mayoría (79,4%), no se identifica la localización geográfica. Como conclusión cabe destacar que la educación para el riesgo en las etapas formativas iniciales es fundamental en el contexto actual de cambio climático para la formación de sociedades más resilientes, pero debe estar basada en el rigor científico de los mensajes a comunicar.

The Mediterranean Sea is a climate change hotspot since it provides a magnified warming signal. Heavily populated areas (e.g., Spanish Mediterranean coasts) are vulnerable to negative socio-economic impacts. This is particularly important for climate-related economic sectors such as coastal tourism, the focus of this paper. To promote a sustainable development of these activities and provide key information to stakeholders, it is necessary to anticipate changes in climate. Thus, it is fundamental to use climate modelling tools which account for air-sea interactions, which largely determine the climate signal of the Mediterranean coasts. In this paper, a set of regional air-sea coupled climate model simulations from Med-CORDEX are used to (i) study the climatic conditions on the Spanish Mediterranean coasts in the next decade(s) and (ii) to assess the possibility of extending the coastal tourist season towards spring-fall. We show that climate conditions are getting warmer and drier in the area, especially in summer. Heat waves and heavy precipitation will become more frequent. Thermal discomfort will increase in summer and summer conditions are extending towards spring and fall. Our work remarks the urgent need of adaptation measures of the sector, including the extension of the high tourist season to spring-fall, especially in the long term. We make a special effort to compile a set of adaptation measures for stakeholders. This study is part of the project ECOAZUL-MED, which aims to create a climate service tool to optimize the management of relevant sectors of the blue economy in the Spanish Mediterranean coasts.

La enseñanza del tiempo y clima, de sus eventos extremos y del proceso de calentamiento climático planetario se ha convertido en un tema prioritario en el contexto actual. La geografía es la disciplina científica que mejor puede presentar de forma didáctica la complejidad de unos procesos atmosféricos que condicionan la vida del ser humano. La aparición de normativas, generales y educativas, que obligan a considerar el cambio climático y sus extremos atmosféricos asociados en la vida cotidiana (territorio, economía, sociedad, educación) permite proponer ideas sobre la manera de transmitir estos procesos en la educación de los diferentes niveles educativos. El trabajo hace repaso a las experiencias didácticas más destacadas que se han desarrollado en España en los últimos años para la enseñanza del clima y el cambio climático. En este sentido se presentan las propuestas didácticas llevadas a cabo desde la Universidad de Alicante (Laboratorio de Climatología) que han resultado exitosas para la transmisión, de forma sencilla, de unos procesos físicos de gran complejidad.

Planificación territorial en tiempos de crisis (2008-2022): cambio de paradigma y recrecimiento en el litoral de Alicante (España) Los efectos de la crisis sanitaria asociada a la pandemia COVID-19, que se han superpuesto a las consecuencias de la crisis económica de 2008, han tenido un gran impacto social y económico en los territorios turísticos monofuncionales. En el litoral de Alicante el desarrollo urbanístico y del turismo ha sido posible gracias a una normativa ambiental y urbanística orientada a permitir una intensa ocupación del litoral y el prelitoral. La crisis inmobiliaria supuso un cambio de paradigma y se sucedieron reformas normativas auspiciadas por el principio rector de la sostenibilidad ambiental y el desarrollo territorial equilibrado. Este trabajo tiene por objetivo evaluar si este cambio de paradigma en la planificación territorial se ha trasladado a la planificación urbana y ha modificado las dinámicas urbano-turísticas en el litoral de Alicante. Para ello se ha analizado información estadística oficial, documentos de planificación territorial a escala municipal y regional y se han realizado entrevistas con las partes implicadas (administración, sector privado, grupos de la sociedad civil, y expertos en planificación territorial y turística). Los resultados ponen de manifiesto que las acciones no han sido uniformes en todo el litoral turístico. Las diferentes respuestas (vuelta a las condiciones pre-pandemia, es decir, crecimiento continuo de la actividad frente a una contención del crecimiento urbano y turístico en línea con las políticas de sostenibilidad y adaptación al cambio climático) evidencian, asimismo, la existencia de conflictos y tensiones entre los sectores y agentes sociales interesados.

The processes involved in the formation of nocturnal temperature inversions (NTIs) are of great relevance throughout the year, notably influencing the surface distribution of minimum temperatures during nights of atmospheric stability. The low density of surface meteorological stations in the study area motivated the use of thermographies for the mapping and identification of cold air pools CAPs. Thermal distribution during stable nights leads to the formation of CAPs in valley areas and depressed areas, and in areas with warmer air (WAM) in orographically complex areas. The thermographies carried out with satellite products from AQUA and SUOMI-NPP (MODIS and VIIRS LST) represent the only tool capable of fully radiographing the territory under study, thus overcoming the limitations in the interpolation of minimum surface temperatures. The main objective of the research was, therefore, to value thermography as an important tool in the identification of CAPs. The Hydrosocial Cycle (HSC) has been widely applied and discussed as a consolidated research line to rethink the contemporary challenges that condition the urban and agroecosystem nexus. However, additional research directions are still open to guide policy and decision-makers in reinforcing stakeholders’ engagement and interaction to resolve tensions between water demands. This perspective paper suggests updating the HSC approach to improve the analysis of stakeholder interaction when addressing water scarcity in waterscapes. After briefly review the most relevant contributions of the HSC approach in the last two decades, we develop a preliminary framework to reinforce stakeholders’ interdependence analysis by designing a questionnaire to synthesize five main behavioral patterns conditioning stakeholders’ interactions: relevance, representativeness, recognition, assessment, and collaboration. Then, each pattern is organized in a triple-loop approach: to be, to do, and to share to characterize the mutual (mis)understanding of the stakeholders. The results of its application to Benidorm (south of Spain), a mass-tourism destination coexisting with rural development in tension for water supply, exemplified how 1) most stakeholders consider themselves important, but some of them are unaware of the role of others, 2) all stakeholders receive a higher punctuation in terms of functions rather than actions, and 3) all stakeholders agree on the benefits of the predisposition of parties (willingness) to achieve agreements in the short or medium term. Future research should consider how to address the lack of representativeness and power imbalance together with mechanisms to reinforce longitudinal studies in which actions from stakeholders could be contrasted.

Historical cartography is one of the principal tools used in correct flood adaptation and management based on territorial planning. In fact, Directive 2007/60/EC on the assessment and management of flood risks includes the analysis and inventory of historical floods in a river basin for assessing the flood hazard and risk existing in a geographical space. This study seeks to analyse the largest flood registered in the Segura basin, occurring on 14–15 October 1879, which attracted enormous interest on a national and international level. The methodology applied is based on the consultation of historical sources and historical cartography, and the elaboration of maps using GIS, enabling comparisons to be made with current flood zones. The results show that the Santa Teresa flood was very similar to the Spanish National Cartographic Systems for Flood Areas (SNCZI) map for a 500-year return period. Furthermore, it allows the identification of the sensitive points along the course of the river or those prone to burst banks or overflowing, which practically coincide with the current maps and modelling conducted by the official bodies. Furthermore, the buildings in the floodable area in the historical cartography have been counted and reconstructed on a GIS map and the SNCZI. Massive anthropic occupation through the construction of settlements and infrastructures (hospitals, schools, centers for the elderly, roads and railways) in the Guadalentín valley and the Segura River increases the risk of flooding in the study area, despite the numerous control and regulation works carried out in the Segura River basin.

In the context of climate change, where the average temperature has risen in recent decades on the Mediterranean coast of the Iberian Peninsula, bioclimatic indicators show an increase in thermal discomfort. This is especially relevant in regions with a clear focus on mass and seasonal sun and beach tourism, with a large number of tourists experiencing discomfort in hot and humid summer environments. The research analyses the temporal evolution (1967–2022) of the coasts of the provinces of Alicante and Murcia (Spain) using the Climate Comfort Index (CCI), divided into four different regions. Used are 14 coastal meteorological observatories divided into four regions. Trend analysis was performed using the Mann–Kendall (MKT) and Theil–Sen (TSE) tests. The results revealed a loss of climate comfort during the summer season (−0.3 to −0.4/decade), as well as an expansion of the warm period toward June and early September, with an increase of 38.7 days in “hot” thermal comfort. The increase in thermal discomfort in the summer is influenced by an increase in average temperature (0.5 to 0.7 °C/decade) and a reduction in the average relative humidity (−1.0 to −2.1%/decade) and wind speed (−0.2 to −0.9 km/h/decade). In the last 22 years (2000–2022), decreases (p ≤ 0.05) have been recorded in July and September (−0.2 to −0.4/decade), reaching “excessive heat” climatic comfort thresholds for the first time. Finally, there has been an increase in thermal comfort in winter, especially during December in recent years (2000–2022).

El siglo XXI es el siglo de la sostenibilidad ambiental y de la lucha contra el cambio climático. El cambio climático va a condicionar políticas públicas y acciones privadas en todo el mundo para alcanzar el objetivo de reducción de emisiones establecidos en los acuerdos internacionales (Kyoto, París). El objetivo de este trabajo es llevar a cabo una revisión de los efectos ya constatados del cambio climático en la región mediterránea, así como las medidas de adaptación y mitigación a corto-medio plazo para hacer frente al calentamiento global, como son la adaptación de los espacios urbanos (escala local), y la mejora de la enseñanza sobre este fenómeno. Según la Agenda 2030, y concretamente los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible, el nº13 (“Acción por el clima”), establece dos acciones principales que los países deben culminar en 2030: la aprobación de leyes y planes de mitigación y adaptación, y la puesta en marcha de programas educativos.

En España, la importancia de la enseñanza de los eventos atmosfé-ricos ha cobrado importancia en la esfera política para mejorar cómo se tratan estos contenidos en las etapas no universitarias. Este interés viene determinado por el hecho de que la educación es una acción de vital necesidad para aumentar la adaptación y resiliencia ante losriesgosnaturalesenelcontextoactualdecambioclimático,talycomorecogelaAgenda2030paraelDesarrolloSostenible.Elobjetodeestetrabajo es proponer actividades didácticas (contexto español) en la asignatura de Geografía (Educación Secundaria y Bachillerato) sobre los riesgos de inundación, uno de los principales efectos asociados alprocesodecalentamientoclimáticoenlaregiónmediterránea.Consuimplementación,sepretende,porunlado,eliminarlasdeficienciasevidenciadasenlaformacióndelalumnadoenrelaciónconlasfuentesde las que obtienen información, y por otro, fomentar la importancia que la educación tiene en la prevención y mitigación de los riesgos climáticos. Esta propuesta, además, se ha elaborado con la intencióndequeseaunaguíaparaimplementarenotrasregionesconcaracterís-ticasclimáticasysocioeconómicassimilares.

Rainfall behavior is a fundamental issue in areas with scarce and irregular amounts, such as the Spanish Mediterranean region. We identified 12 spatial patterns that characterized 899 torrential precipitation events (≥150 mm in 24 h) that occurred in the 3,537 rainy precipitation series in the period 1950–2020. Three of these components––eastern and ESE––showed positive and significant trends in their accumulated volumes. We then characterized the mean synoptic causes of the 10 most intense events in each component at both mean sea-level pressure and 500 hPa geopotential height, and also the integrated water-vapor transport between 1,000 and 300 hPa. We found a clear spatial distribution of the pluviometric effects related to unstable atmospheric situations (such as troughs and cut-off lows), and also to SW–SE advection fluxes that brought moist air from the Western Mediterranean. In particular, torrential rainfall in the Balearic Islands related more to E–NE advections than to southeastern ones. We also determined that the major parts of these components occurred in early autumn, especially in September and October. We expect these findings to help our understanding of the processes leading to catastrophic situations along the Spanish Mediterranean coast and to lead to improvements in early alert systems and management plans.

Esta investigación tiene como objetivo analizar cómo se recoge la educación sobre el cambio climático en los principales documentos oficiales internacionales y españoles sobre este fenómeno. Los resultados más remarcables muestran que, a nivel internacional, dicha cuestión es reconocida con medidas interesantes, pero sin concreción. Respecto a España, la enseñanza de este fenómeno incorpora aspectos más concretos y teniendo en cuenta el entorno regional y local, no solo de la población escolar, sino también de la sociedad en general. Como conclusión, cabe destacar que, tras la revisión de esta documentación, se ha podido comprobar que, con el paso de los años, la enseñanza de este fenómeno ha ido cobrando protagonismo, con un mayor detalle de medidas concretas en el ámbito español y en las actuaciones de las administraciones regionales.

Semi-arid and arid regions are characterized by their water scarcity, which leads territories to seek ways of increasing the water resources available to meet their demands (urban, agricultural, industrial, leisure and tourism, etc.). For this reason, this article proposes the term “wastewater use basin”; the concept of the “wastewater use basin” is presented as a working unit of a smaller scale than traditional river basins, which allows for a better management of the water collected in the sewerage network and rainwater of urban agglomerations. It is a geographically-focused proposal for the integrated management of wastewater and stormwater that ends up in a wastewater treatment plant for treatment and reuse. The study area is located in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula, Spain; specifically, the Campo of Cartagena-Mar Menor district (Murcia) and Vega Baja district (Alicante). The results show the trend behaviour of rainfall in the Segura river basin in recent episodes of torrential rainfall. There is a clear tendency for these episodes to occur in the coastal and pre-coastal areas, so that the water does not reach the headwaters where the reservoirs are located. For this reason, the proposed concept includes the area of the basin that would be formed by the wastewater and rainwater collectors which, in short, are intended to be treated in a treatment plant for subsequent reuse. The calculations made on the basis of the capacity of the environmental tanks executed and projected amount to four cubic hectometers which could be added to the hydrological planning of the Segura basin. In conclusion, the collection of rainwater allows the incorporation of an additional volume of water that complements and increases the resources offered by the treatment plants in the hydrological planning. It also serves as a measure of adaptation to climatic extremes (droughts and floods) and to the effects of climate change, supporting a circular management of the use of resources.

The study of historical floods is a growing research trend that has generated numerous methodologies that aim to convert the qualitative historical documentation into quantitative information. This codification process aims to make comparable in time and space the manner in which past societies adapted to floods, and so extract the positive or negative points that can help reduce vulnerability and increase the resilience of current societies. However, the diversity of cultural and historical contexts, as well as the spatial-temporal heterogeneity of documentary sources, makes it difficult to extrapolate quantitative methods in historical climatology. This situation means that interpretative analyses of texts are still necessary as a complement to quantitative studies. In this paper, we make a hermeneutic analysis of the three most catastrophic floods that have occurred in the city of Murcia (south-eastern Spain) in the last 400 years. We complete this analysis with a historical cartographic reconstruction of a quantitative nature. Among the main conclusions, we highlight the fact that the society of Murcia had strategies to overcome catastrophes that included the whole of society and an integrated emergency management. However, the state of poverty of privation prior to a flood is a determining factor in explaining the resilience of a social system. A large increase in exposure of flood-prone areas over the past two centuries is noteworthy but unsurprising. However, it is surprising that the percentage of urban area exposed to flooding is now smaller than in the past. Therefore, if we consider hazard avoidance as a form of management, we can say that pre-industrial Murcian society was less efficient in using the mechanisms available to adapt to flooding.

One of the principal challenges for cities on the Mediterranean coast is the management of urban runoff after episodes of intense rainfall. This problem is aggravated by the effects of climate change, with the increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather phenomena in this region. In light of this situation, the local governments, in collaboration with the concessionaire companies providing supply and sewage services, are committed to adopting measures aimed at a more efficient management of non-conventional water resources. Examples of good practice for reducing urban flood risk and adapting to climate change are those actions developed in the tourist municipalities of Alicante, Torrevieja, and Benidorm, where measures have been implemented or have been planned and integrated with green spaces, with a commitment to sustainability, such as sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS) or Nature-Based Solutions (NBSs). This study analyses these case studies, based on a detailed review of the technical projects that contemplate each of the actions. Furthermore, several field trips were made with technical personnel who are familiar with the measures adopted. The results show that the implementation of these systems contributes to advancing the reduction of urban flood risk and the adaptation to climate change, creating more resilient and safer urban spaces for the citizens residing in them.

La climatología es la rama que desarrolla en mayor grado el principio rector de la geografía: el estudio de las relaciones entre el medio y el ser humano, así como de sus diferentes manifestaciones sobre la superficie terrestre. La climatología española compite en la actualidad en igualdad de condiciones con el análisis climático internacional. Ha incluido nuevos planteamientos teóricos y métodos de trabajo que proporcionan resultados publicados en revistas y en monografías de impacto. Uno de los temas principales de la investigación española en dicho ámbito es el cambio climático actual y los efectos que ejerce en los elementos atmosféricos. El litoral mediterráneo es un buen laboratorio para profundizar en esta cuestión, puesto que ya manifiesta consecuencias que, si mantienen su tendencia actual, pueden comportar efectos en las actividades económicas y en la propia ocupación del territorio. En el presente artículo se propone una agenda de trabajo para que, en este contexto, la climatología española se convierta en la rama protagonista de la investigación y la docencia geográfica española en los próximos años.

La Ley de Costas 2/2013 extiende las concesiones de las construcciones que ocupan el dominio público marítimo terrestre (DPMT) hasta un máximo de 75 años, lo que supone una falta de visión ante los efectos del cambio climático asociados al incremento del nivel del mar y la mayor recurrencia de los temporales marítimos. El presente trabajo realiza un diagnóstico sobre el problema de la ocupación de la franja costera en el litoral sur de la provincia de Alicante. Se analizan los efectos de la borrasca Gloria (enero de 2020), el grave problema de regresión de las playas y el riesgo de inundación en las viviendas que ocupan el DPMT. Los resultados muestran el grave riesgo de inundación que presentan las playas de Babilonia, La Mata, Las Villas y El Mojón. Se realizan propuestas en diferentes materias que permitirían la recuperación de las playas con el grave problema de la regresión y la adaptación al cambio climático.

Climate change is the most important environmental problem facing humanity in this century. And it has become the great axis of public policies and private actions in developed societies. The effects of altering the planetary energy balance due to anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions are already becoming evident in some regions of the planet. Among them, the evidence is already significant in the areas with a Mediterranean climate. This paper collects, as a review paper, the evidence and trends that are being recorded in two areas with a Mediterranean climate (the Spanish Mediterranean coast and the central sector of Chile) to assess the effect of the global warming process. The impact that the current climate change is having on the main elements of the climate and on specific environmental processes in both of these geographical spaces has been analysed. The study seeks to update, through an evaluative summary, the state of the issue of climate change in Mediterranean areas, indicating its future impact on elements of the natural environment and on the functioning of the societies that exist in these regions.

La enseñanza de la temática del tiempo y clima ha experimentado un notable interés y renovación en los últimos años debido a la preocupación social por las cuestiones ambientales en el marco del proceso de cambio climático actual. Debido a este interés, este trabajo plantea diferentes objetivos. Por un lado, presentar el cambio climático como el proceso ambiental más importante y de efectos más destacados del presente siglo en la superficie terrestre. En segundo lugar, justificar el tratamiento preciso y científico de esta cuestión en el ámbito escolar (Educación Secundaria y Bachillerato) y explicar los principales efectos que ello puede tener en las futuras generaciones. Y tercero, plantear diferentes actividades para la enseñanza del cambio climático en el aula, con sus diferentes aspectos asociados (evolución histórica, efectos en episodios extremos, en elementos climáticos y en la economía y sociedad). La correcta presentación del cambio climático y sus efectos es una cuestión esencial para la formación de las sociedades en el presente siglo tal y como señalan los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS) de las Naciones Unidas (Agenda 2030) o la propia Ley de Cambio Climático española (mayo de 2021).

La pandemia Covid-19 ha sido un fenómeno de extraordinario calado por su desgraciada incidencia en la elevada pérdida de vidas humanas y por los perniciosos efectos sociales y económicos que ha provocado en todo el mundo. Son numerosos los organismos internacionales, y también en cada país, que han usado el recurso cartográfico para mostrar su origen, evolución y efectos, difundiéndose profusamente los resultados en los medios de comunicación. La cartografía ofrece muchas posibilidades al usuario por el hecho de que éste pueda entablar un diálogo inteligente con el mapa en el que, a buen seguro, descubrirá matices inéditos y, sobre todo, podrá formular hipótesis bien fundamentadas que sostengan futuras investigaciones más específicas. En España, se ha desarrollado un proyecto cartográfico colaborativo entre el Instituto Geográfico Nacional y la Asociación Española de Geografía que ha tenido como resultado la edición de un Atlas sobre la pandemia Covid-19 en España. En este artículo, después de una breve introducción, se abordan aspectos conceptuales, metodológicos y organizativos que han sustentado la confección del atlas con aportación de una muestra de mapas que integran dicho atlas, a la vez que se analiza un elenco representativo de ejemplos internacionales de cartografía de la Covid-19.

Within the current context of climate emergency, the topic of climate change has become more prominent in secondary education in Spain. However, in general, conceptual confusions arise which should be clarified due to the social importance of climate issues. The objectives of this study, focused on third and fourth year students of ESO (Obligatory Secondary Education) in state schools in a town in the province of Alicante (Region of Valencia, Spain), seek to reveal the perception of the students regarding climate change and extreme weather events, in accordance with the subject in which these contents are taught; and to analyse whether the students have acquired a basic knowledge of the topic at the end of their secondary education. In order to fulfil these objectives, a non-experimental, descriptive, cross-sectional and survey-based correlational study has been conducted. The sample was made up of 784 students, surveyed during the academic year 2021–2022. The results indicate that the principal subject in which climate change is taught is Geography and History. The students consider that climate change is a threat to human beings and believe that anthropogenic action is the principal cause. They also perceive an increase in extreme weather events, although it is necessary to qualify this aspect. Therefore, this study defends the need to address this topic in the third and fourth years of ESO, as it is one of the major challenges faced by society and one in which students should be educated within the framework of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Emergency mapping makes it possible to manage an emergency situation and even to analyze the catastrophic event, a posteriori, in order to improve action protocols for Civil Protection. The emergency maps are produced from the analysis of calls to the Emergency Coordination Centre (911 or 112). Thus, the concept of integral risk mapping arises, in which risk mapping and aspects that allow for more realistic analysis and mapping through the analysis of emergency calls in the event of a natural event converge. In this case, the analysis is focused on the floods that occurred from 12 to 15 September 2019 in the Vega Baja del Segura district (Alicante, Spain). The results obtained show that this is the flooding episode with the highest number of emergency calls in Valencian region and Vega Baja del Segura district (2010–2022). Likewise, the spatial-temporal analysis of the geolocation of the calls and their reasons, have allowed us to draw up a much more detailed map of flooding or affected areas in 2019 than the official maps. In conclusion, the analysis of emergency calls makes it possible to identify problems and vulnerable areas where proposals can be made to reduce the impact of floods and increase the resilience of a territory. At the same time, it is presented as a novel field of research for the analysis of natural and anthropic risks.

Los extensos e inhóspitos calares ubicados en las Sierra de Segura y Cabrilla (divisoria entre las demarcaciones hidrográficas del Segura y Guadalquivir) presentan un estereotipo microclimático caracterizado por inviernos extremadamente fríos, con temperaturas mínimas absolutas cercanas a -30ºC en invierno, y -10ºC y -15ºC en otoño y primavera respectivamente. Los datos registrados han sido obtenidos de una red propia de termómetros registradores (datalogger) entre octubre de 2016 y febrero de 2021 (con un total de cinco inviernos de observación). A través del análisis estadístico de datos diezminutales y diarios de tres puntos de observación (Monterilla, Navalasno y Nava del Polvo), imágenes satelitales (VIIRS LST) y reanálisis mesoescalares es posible llevar a cabo la primera descripción climática del área de estudio, así como la identificación de los factores desencadenantes (sinópticos y de microescala) de las temperaturas mínimas extremas registradas, y el análisis de la tipología de los procesos de inversión térmica nocturna (ITN) y las piscinas de aire frío (CAP) generadas en el área de estudio. A pesar de que el tipo de piscina fría predominante es la de erosión turbulenta (39,0 %), los procesos de estabilidad nocturno son intensos (CINV entre 7,6 y 12,5ºC).

Floods are the natural hazard that have the greatest economic impact and cause the most deaths in the Mediterranean region. The objective of this study is to present different proposals for teach the risk of flooding using the GIS viewers offered by the NFZMS (National Flood Zone Mapping System) and the PATRICOVA (Spain). The idea is that, based on the selection of the same area of study (the mouth of the Júcar River—Valencia—and the mouth of the Segura River—Alicante), students determine the similarities and differences, for educational purposes, of these two geographical viewers. These proposals are aimed at the 2nd year of the Baccalaureate (17–18 years; optional subject of Geography). The objective is to enhance the skills of the students for understand the territory, especially their immediate environment, in the learning process. Furthermore, it also seeks to expand the knowledge of students with regard to these extreme phenomena experienced by society. This proposal shows that these types of tools are important for students to understand the social and territorial part of flooding events (vulnerability and exposure), which is the most salient part in terms of finding solutions to minimise their effects.

Intense rainfall (≥100 mm/24 h) constitutes the most frequent atmospheric hazard on Spain’s Mediterranean coast; this phenomenon causes serious damage to property and kills or injures inhabitants. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, in its latest report in 2022, indicates that in the current climate change scenario, these episodes will become more frequent, hence the importance of analysing and characterising them. The present paper analysed intense rainfall episodes in the central sector of the Spanish Mediterranean coast (province of Alicante) in the 1981–2020 period. A total of 129 episodes were identified which have affected different areas of this province. The rainfall events were analysed by means of three synoptic classification methods subjective/manual and objective/automatic in order to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the two modalities. The main objective was to identify the most favourable atmospheric situations triggering intense rainfall in the study area. The period with the highest propensity for these episodes to develop was identified, as well as the geographical areas most affected in the study period. Autumn concentrates the biggest amount of intense rainfall episodes throughout the year. Herein, we attempt to demonstrate the relationship between atmospheric situation, accumulated rainfall volume, geographical area affected, and the most favourable period of the year for the development of these events. The main results of the synoptic analysis of extreme events show the coincidence, in the three classification methods used, that the existence of instability in the middle and upper layers of the atmosphere (DANA and troughs) and humid and warm E and NE surface flows are decisive. In addition, the warming recorded in the waters of the western Mediterranean in recent decades is related to extreme events.

El cambio climático es un proceso planetario que está manifestando efectos importantes en algunas regiones del mundo. La región mediterránea es un laboratorio privilegiado para el estudio del calentamiento de la atmósfera. Junto a la subida constante de la temperatura, registrada en las últimas décadas, el problema principal es el incremento en la frecuencia de desarrollo de eventos atmosféricos extremos que suponen un aumento del riesgo en el territorio. El territorio y las sociedades ibéricas deben adaptarse a los efectos del cambio climático. Las ciudades y las actividades económicas tienen que planificar su desarrollo futuro bajo los supuestos previstos en la modelización climática. Este es el reto más importante en la región mediterránea a lo largo del presente siglo.

La rambla de Abanilla es un curso fluvial del sureste ibérico, generalmente seco, que se reactiva en momentos de precipitaciones intensas, generando anegaciones en su tramo final, en la Vega Baja del Segura (Alicante). El objetivo de esta investigación es determinar el grado de peligrosidad existente en los municipios del tramo bajo que fueron afectados en el episodio de septiembre de 2019. Se realiza una modelización del cauce y una serie mapas temáticos, cuyo resultado ha sido una cartografía de peligrosidad de inundación. Los resultados obtenidos muestran un nivel elevado de peligrosidad en el curso final del cauce (mayor que el realizado en la cartografía oficial existente SNCZI y PATRICOVA). Se analizan las propuestas que se han ido planteando tras cada evento de inundación por parte de diferentes organismos, y se proponen una serie de actuaciones para reducir la peligrosidad en los diferentes tramos de la rambla de Abanilla. La recuperación de sistemas tradicionales de riego se presenta como una posibilidad para reducir caudales de crecida y transformar el riesgo en un recurso, además de ser una medida de adaptación en el actual contexto de cambio climático.

El clima es el conjunto de mecanismos y procesos atmosféricos percibidos y vividos por el ser humano -el ambiente permanente que se da en un lugar concreto- más la explicación de sus causas -la sucesión de tipos de tiempo-. Su enseñanza en los niveles educativos básicos no deja de esconder cierta complejidad, debiéndose apostar por una selección adecuada de contenidos y de prácticas docentes para no convertir lo que, sin duda, es un tema atractivo y de actualidad en un estudio memorístico carente de reflexión. Partiendo del análisis y la valoración de los contenidos curriculares que sobre tiempo y clima se imparten en la educación obligatoria, se repasan los recursos y tipos de actividades utilizados en el aula, planteándose algunas propuestas didácticas con las que mejorar la enseñanza-aprendizaje de la Climatología escolar, para cuyo diseño y adaptación pedagógica se ha contado con el obligado concurso de maestros y profesores.

Climate change is one of the most important problems facing society in the 21st century. Despite the uncertainty about the behaviour of rainfall due to climate change, what is clear is that average rainfall has been reduced in the inland areas and headwaters of Spain’s river basins. The Tagus basin is one of the most affected, with implications for the Jucar and Segura basins. The working hypothesis is to corroborate with the data collected on the effects of climate change on the TTS. To this end, the following methodology has been applied: (a) analysis in the headwaters of the Tagus, using data on precipitation, surface runoff and reservoir water; (b) analysis of the resources of the Segura basin (supply and demand), based on the basin organisation’s own data; (c) construction of a water balance adjusted to the Bajo Segura district (Alicante), a user of the water transferred for agricultural use. Likewise, the data provided by the basin organisation have made it possible to corroborate the data on consumption and allocation of the corresponding volumes of water. The results obtained make it possible to put forward a novel proposal in the scientific field related to hydrological planning based on the principles of sustainability.

The political sphere is starting to take an interest in how the teaching of atmospheric risks at pre-university stages can be improved. This interest has arisen due to the fact that, as stated in the 2030 Agenda, education is an important factor for reducing the effects of natural hazards within the context of current climate change. However, in developed countries education has not played a prominent role in the design of risk prevention policies. The purpose of this study was to identify the principal deficiencies that characterise the study of natural risks in non-university education and then to propose didactic activities for improving the teaching of the main processes associated with climate change (episodes of intense rains and droughts) that already affect the Spanish Mediterranean region. Their implementation in the classroom seeks, first, to correct the deficiencies in the knowledge of the students in terms of the sources from which they obtain information, and second, to raise awareness about the importance of education in the prevention and mitigation of climate risks. These proposals are intended to serve as a guide to activities to be implemented in classrooms in other international areas, taking into account their geographical characteristics and the availability of data.

El texto que sigue se corresponde con la aportación que los autores hacen a las jornadas de la Asociación Cartográfica Internacional (ICA) en Madrid bajo el título de “Atlasses in time”. La responsabilidad de su organiza­ción la ostenta la Sociedad de Cartografía, Fotogrametría y Teledetección como miembro de la ICA y con el patro­cinio general del Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN) y, más en concreto, de la Subdirección de Geodesia y Car­tografía y el Área de Cartografía Temática y Atlas Nacio­nal del propio IGN. Por parte de la ICA, estas jornadas son impulsadas por la Comisión Internacional de Atlas y la Comisión Internacional de Toponimia.

The management of runoff during torrential rainfall events is a significant problem in urban areas of southeast Spain. The increase in soil sealing and the occupation of areas prone to flooding have aggravated this problem. Due to this situation, municipal administrations, in collaboration with the concession holder for the supply of water and sewage services, Hidraqua Gestión Integral de Aguas de Levante SA, are committed a more efficient management of non-conventional water resources. An example of this can be found in the municipalities of Rojales, Daya Nueva, and San Fulgencio. These towns are located in the Bajo Segura region of the province of Alicante, where various initiatives have been implemented that break away from the traditional paradigm of rigid infrastructures. These initiatives include green spaces or areas, and sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS) or nature-based solutions (NBS). This article presents various case studies. Firstly, in the town of Rojales, where several actions are being undertaken to improve the management of wastewater and rainwater and provide a solution to unauthorised dumping, as well as encouraging the use of reclaimed water with the creation of a recreational green area, El Recorral Park. Secondly, in the case of Daya Nueva, the Europa Park constitutes a recreational green area, Europa Park, facilitates runoff drainage by SUDS and NBS. Finally, the creation of a floodable pond in the municipality of San Fulgencio encourages the use of wastewater, thus avoiding the discharge of this non-conventional water resource into the sea. In addition, the pond facilitates the appropriate management of runoff water. The working method in this article has been twofold: firstly, bibliographical references have been consulted from other national and international areas; and secondly, the technical projects in the case studies have been analysed in detail. Several field trips have been made to the selected municipalities, accompanied by the technical personnel in charge of the execution of the projects, to examine the measures adopted. The results show that the implementation of these systems contributes to adapting to climate change and creates more resilient urban spaces.

This work is a first approximation to the dimension of the waste of public resources in infrastructures in Spain from 1995 to the present in the different levels of government. It differentiates between waste and corruption. Waste as the investment and extra costs undertaken for unnecessary infrastructures is analysed. Both for central government and for regional and local governments in relation to their competences, and on the other hand, infrastructures, projects, failed and empty or underutilized investments and events undertaken by the Autonomous Communities and local governments. The limitations and misuse of the institutions and the territorial governance is signaled with some proposals for a reform agenda.

La educación es una acción fundamental para reducir la acción de los riesgos naturales dentro del contexto del cambio climático actual. No obstante, en los países desarrollados no ha tenido un protagonismo destacado en cuanto al diseño de las políticas de prevención de estos riesgos. Y ello, a pesar del papel que cubre en la concienciación que puedan lograr las cohortes más jóvenes de la sociedad ya que serán protagonistas de estos procesos en las próximas décadas. Este trabajo tiene por objeto proponer actividades didácticas para el tratamiento de cinco procesos principales de manifestación extrema del clima que ya afectan a la región mediterránea y que deben incorporarse en la asignatura de Geografía (Educación Secundaria y Bachillerato). Estas propuestas pretenden ser una guía de trabajo en el aula para ser implementadas en otros territorios, teniendo en cuenta sus rasgos geográficos y disponibilidad de datos. Su implementación en el aula y las ediciones futuras de los libros de texto suponen una apuesta por el factor educación como recurso básico para conseguir una sociedad más resiliente a los extremos atmosféricos vinculados al proceso de cambio climático.

The basins of the Júcar and Segura rivers, on the Mediterranean coast of the Iberian Peninsula, present a special water problem and are of particular interest regarding climate change. These basins are very vulnerable to a possible scenario of decreasing water resources. Recent studies on historic rainfall since 1955 have indicated an ongoing loss of precipitation in their headwaters, especially in the case of the Júcar river. The aim of the present study is to perform climate projections for the precipitation variable for several future periods (2021–2040, 2051–2070, 2081–2100) and emission scenarios (RCPs 4.5, 8.5) within the Júcar and Segura River Basin authorities. For this purpose, a set of CMIP5 global models have been used, as well as the CDRD-HR-EIP-1955-2016 database, as a source of local observed information. This database comprises nearly 900 precipitation series in both basins and has been used in recent studies to determine historic trends of change in these basins. A statistical downscaling of the global models for all available observed series has been applied using the LARS-WG method. The results, although variable according to the CMIP5 model used, show the continuation of the patterns of precipitation change in the future, as already observed in the historical series. The results also predict a clear reduction in precipitation in the long term. However, torrential rainfall tends to increase in the coastal areas in relation to that observed in the short-term predictions. These results, due to their high spatial resolution, are of great interest for their use in small-scale hydrological and spatial planning (regional and local), which is one of the current challenges of climate modeling.

Las inundaciones han merecido análisis y estudio desde época histórica en España. Los informes y memoriales elaborados tras el desarrollo de un gran evento incluyen, a partir del siglo XVIII , mapas de las zonas afectadas. Estas primeras cartografías han ido mejorando en relación con los avances cartográficos y la incorporación de nuevos métodos de análisis. Ello ha permitido avanzar desde las cartografías de peligrosidad a los mapas que incorporan métodos de valoración de la vulnerabilidad. El trabajo hace repaso de los hitos más destacados en la elaboración de cartografía de inundaciones en España y valora la situación actual, donde la Directiva 60/2007 sobre gestión del riesgo de inundación en el territorio europeo supone un importante avance para la confección de mapas realmente de riesgo.

Se presentan los contenidos de una metodología que permite predecir y cartografiar aquellos puntos en el recorrido de una infraestructura viaria susceptibles de quedar bloqueados por riesgos tras episodios de precipitación torrencial. Se consideran los riesgos de movimiento en masa, subsidencia del firme, generación de balsas e inundación por desbordamiento de cauces aledaños. Para estimar las consecuencias en cada punto, se evalúan tanto factores de peligrosidad como de vulnerabilidad del medio humano frente al potencial corte de tráfico. Se ha diseñado, además, una aplicación informática que implementa la metodología obtenida y facilita su aplicación a otros casos.

El 5º Informe del IPCC (Panel Intergubernamental de Cambio Climático, 2014) señala que el turismo será una de las actividades económicas que mayores efectos negativos experimentará en las próximas décadas debido al calentamiento térmico del planeta. En España, el turismo es una fuente principal de ingresos y de creación de puestos de trabajo en su economía. De ahí que sea necesaria la puesta en marcha de medidas de adaptación a la nueva realidad climática que, en nuestro país, va a suponer cambios en el confort climático de los destinos e incremento de extremos atmosféricos. Frente a los planes de adaptación al cambio climático en la actividad turística, elaborados por los gobiernos estatal y regional, que apenas se han desarrollado en España, la escala local muestra interesantes ejemplos de acciones de adaptación al cambio climático, desarrolladas tanto por los municipios (energía, transporte, vivienda, planificación urbanística) como por la propia empresa turística (hoteles, campings, apartamentos). Medidas de ahorro de agua y luz, fomento del transporte público y de las energías limpias, creación de zonas verdes urbanas y adaptación a los extremos atmosféricos destacan como acciones de mitigación del cambio climático en los destinos turísticos principales de nuestro país.

Aquest treball analitza les noves tendències en la creació i gestió d’informació geogràfica, per a l’elaboració de models inductius basats exclusivament en bases de dades geogràfiques. Aquests tipus de models permeten integrar grans volums de dades de característiques heterogènies, la qual cosa suposa una gran complexitat tècnica i metodològica. Es proposa una metodologia que permet conèixer detalladament la distribució dels recursos hídrics naturals en un territori i derivar nombroses capes d’informació que puguin ser incorporades dins d’aquests models «àvids de dades» (data-hungry). La zona d’estudi escollida per aplicar aquesta metodologia és la comarca de la Marina Baixa (Alacant), per a la qual es presenta un càlcul del balanç hídric espacial mitjançant l’ús d’eines estadístiques, geoestadístiques i Sistemes d’Informació Geogràfica. Finalment, totes les capes d’informació generades (84) han estat validades i s’ha comprovat que la seva creació admet un cert grau d’automatització que permetrà incorporar-les dins d’anàlisis de Mineria de Dades més amplis.

El litoral mediterráneo español es una de las áreas de Europa donde pueden ser más evidentes los cambios en las condiciones climáticas durante las próximas décadas. La subida de temperaturas y el descenso de precipitaciones son factores que obligan a tomar medidas de adaptación que reduzcan el disconfort térmico previsto y la escasez de recursos de agua convencional derivada de una disminución de las lluvias. La actividad turística es un sector vulnerable ante el cambio climático y sus riesgos asociados y ha de ir adaptándose a la nueva realidad climática prevista. Junto a los protocolos internacionales de reducción de emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero, se han puesto en marcha planes de adaptación al cambio climático, con medidas concretas para cada sector económico. Se analizan las políticas de adaptación al cambio climático desarrolladas en España en los últimos años, con especial detalle en las regiones del litoral mediterráneo, por la gran importancia económica y territorial de la actividad turística en ellas y los preocupantes efectos que se señalan en los modelos de cambio climático para las próximas décadas en estos territorios.

En las dos últimas décadas, la expresión «desarrollo territorial sostenible» se ha incorporado con éxito en los documentos de ordenación del territorio, hasta convertirse en un principio rector principal. El objetivo de este artículo es analizar la incorporación de los principios de sostenibilidad en la planificación territorial española, valorando los resultados prácticos que ello ha significado. Se ha realizado un análisis de las leyes y planes de ordenación del territorio de escala regional, destacando en cuatro casos de estudio (País Vasco, Navarra, Andalucía y Comunidad Valenciana) por la relevancia que este principio rector ha cobrado en sus procesos de planificación territorial. Se ha completado la información con la realización de entrevistas a actores clave de la ordenación del territorio en esos espacios regionales. Los resultados muestran que, a pesar de las buenas intenciones que incluyen los textos de leyes y planes, por lo común, el proceso de integración de la sostenibilidad a la planificación territorial de escala regional es lento y sus efectos prácticos todavía son escasamente visibles.

The effects of climate change on rainfall in the Mediterranean region are manifested in an overall decreasing trend, and greater irregularity in annual volumes and the city of Alicante is no exception. In addition, there has also been a spread of the urbanised area, which has led to an increase in the flood risk in urban areas (due to a greater runoff and the occupation of flood hazard areas) and drought events due to an increase in the water demand. In light of these new scenarios, the Mediterranean cities should design adaptation systems based on rainwater harvesting within the framework of a circular economy. This study analyses the integration of rainwater in flood and water demand management in the city of Alicante (Southern Spain). In recent years, this city has developed infrastructures in order to use these resources. To do this, different databases have been analysed (rainfall and volume of water collected in the green infrastructure systems). The results reveal that stormwater has become highly important in urban water management in Alicante as the city is now using a resource that previously went to waste and created problems (flooding and pollution). By way of conclusion, it is worth mentioning that the incorporation of rainwater for urban use in Alicante has reduced the pressure on traditional resources in satisfying water demand and has also acted as a measure for adapting to climate change.

Studies on water in cities usually focus on household consumption. However, little attention has been given to non-household consumption and schools from a geographic perspective. The objectives of this research are to examine water consumption trends in schools in the city of Alicante (Southern Spain) between 2000–2017, revise how water use is managed in these centers, and, lastly, examine initiatives aimed at environmental education and saving water in these schools. The results obtained from a survey of school directors indicate a low level of participation because only 14 of the 88 educational centres in the city chose to collaborate in this research. Second, and with regard to water trend consumption, in 2017, water consumption increased by 1.76% in comparison with the average for the period of 2000 to 2004, in contrast with a 38.9% fall in non-household general consumption in the city. Lastly, measures to encourage water saving and environmental education in schools are limited. This tendency is explained by the increase in the number of users over the last five years. Second, the water bill is not paid directly by schools’ directors and, thus, ‘free’ water is a factor that does not incentivise savings. A third is the little investment made in the installation of water-saving devices, water-saving plans, or action taken to promote the use of non-conventional water resources to the watering garden. Lastly, low promotion of environmental education or incentives for savings in schools.

Este trabajo pretende ser una primera aproximación a la dimensión del despilfarro de recursos públicos en infraestructuras en España desde 1995 hasta la actualidad en los distintos niveles de gobierno. A partir de algunas precisiones sobre los conceptos de despilfarro y corrupción, se analiza, de una parte, la inversión y los sobrecostes en infraestructuras innecesarias impulsadas y ejecutadas por la Administración General del Estado en el ámbito de sus competencias, y de otra, infraestructuras, proyectos, eventos e inversiones fallidas, vacías o infrautilizadas acometidas por las Comunidades Autónomas y los gobiernos locales. Se abordan los déficit de marco institucional y de gobernanza territorial y se sugiere una posible agenda de reformas a partir de unas conclusiones generales.

Kant ha pasado a la historia del pensamiento universal como el gran filósofo de la razón, del idealismo transcendental, pero como docente universitario impartió enseñanzas de geografía durante cuarenta años. El estudio y comprensión del “espacio” constituye uno de los ejes de la filosofía kantiana, porque el filósofo de Köningsberg considera al espacio como uno de los ejes básicos del conocimiento humano, de ahí que no resulte extraño comprender el interés de Kant por la geografía. Sus lecciones de Geografía Física son un compendio de los conocimiento geográfico en época ilustrada y en sus páginas hay varios apartados dedicados al entendimiento de los fenómenos atmosféricos, que resultan realmente innovadores para la ciencia climática. La explicación de los vientos alisios, de los monzones, del fenómeno de brisas y, en general, del movimiento del viento suponen un avance en la evolución de la climatología.

La fractalidad temporal de la precipitación D indica la característica de autosimilitud de la lluvia, que los sucesos lluviosos se repitan con regularidad a diferentes escalas temporales. Los valores de D se determinan para 44 estaciones de la España peninsular y Baleares, variando entre 1,6039 y 1,4499. Según semestres, los valores de D son más bajos en la mitad cálida que en la mitad fría. En el norte los valores de D son mayores, a nivel anual y semestral, mientras que en el mediterráneo y en el valle del Ebro son menores, y las mayores diferencias en el norte y en el valle del Guadalquivir.

La disponibilidad de agua en cantidad y calidad es un factor decisivo para atender las demandas urbanas, turísticas y agrícolas en territorios con escasez natural de recursos. En la provincia de Alicante, a fin de garantizar estas demandas se ha recurrido a soluciones hidráulicas tradicionales, como trasvases y explotación de acuíferos, unidas al creciente empleo de fuentes no convencionales y al incremento de la eficiencia del uso del agua, así como a otras basadas en la armonización de distintos usos. Se analizan los modelos más importantes desarrollados en Alicante para la armonización de usos del agua urbanoturísticos y agrícolas: la gestión colectiva de acuíferos sobreexplotados (Junta Central de Usuarios del Vinalopó) y los acuerdos suscritos entre el medio urbano y los agricultores basados en el intercambio de aguas depuradas y aguas limpias para su empleo en el regadío y los usos urbano-turísticos, respectivamente (Consorcio de Aguas de la Marina Baja). Se pone de manifiesto la importancia creciente de las aguas residuales regeneradas para la armonización de usos urbano-turísticos y agrícolas del agua.

Los estudios sobre percepción de riesgos intentan analizar las relaciones afectivas y éticas que una comunidad establece con el ambiente en que vive. Las percepciones ambientales son entendidas como la forma en que cada persona aprecia y valora su entorno. El presente artículo tiene como objetivo analizar la percepción de riesgos naturales en los miembros de la comunidad académica de la Universidad de Alicante. Para evaluar la percepción se aplicaron encuestas. Han sido contestadas 80 encuestas, todas por medio electrónico. Los resultados indican que la percepción de las principales amenazas por fenómenos naturales son: las inundaciones, las sequías y los incendios forestales. Se concluye resaltando la importancia de trabajos que aporten información sobre la percepción ambiental, con el fin de hacer más eficiente la aplicación de políticas ambientales.

Drought is a climatic risk with notable repercussions on water supply systems. The aim of this study is to analyze the principal measures for management and planning implemented during recent decades in south-eastern Spain (Segura River Basin) to respond to drought situations, focusing on the role played by non-conventional water resources (desalination and treated water). The results demonstrate that the study area (despite being one of the driest places of Spain) is less vulnerable to drought than regions with an Atlantic climate and greater availability of water. This has been possible thanks to the integration of non-conventional water resources as a means of adaptation to confront this natural risk, which is estimated to become more intense and frequent in the future owing to climate change.
