In Australia as elsewhere within the belligerent nations of the Great War, dissenting thinkers were marginalised with the mobilisation of militarism. Vance and Nettie Palmer, Australia's most important literary partnership in the interwar period, were initially critical of the war, their response typical of the English radical intelligentsia among whom they were living at the time of its outbreak. Forced back to Australia in 1915, the Palmers had to re-establish themselves in its increasingly turbulent intellectual battlefields. Nettie's earlier anti-war beliefs and cosmopolitanism were undermined while Vance became ever more deeply enmeshed in a discourse concerning the virtues of the 'ordinary people', which encompassed the men of the Australian Imperial Force (AIF). Nevertheless, in their extensive writings about Australia, neither Palmer ever endorsed the legend of the heroic Anzacs. The Great War, however, profoundly shaped their political consciousness and their choice of genre and writing strategies, as it did others of their literary generation. This article will show that the war was a far more important influence on their work than usually acknowledged in Australian literary scholarship, and thereby reveal some of the cultural patterns that shaped their generation of Australian radical writers and intellectuals--particularly in Melbourne, arguably the heartland for the tradition of democratic literary nationalism which the Palmers have been seen to epitomise.

This article will investigate the district nurse's role in managing urinary catheter blockages, looking at why people require long-term catheterisation and the causes of blockages and then reviewing treatment methods. Current practice will be critically analysed and compared to the most up to date research and literature to inform district nurses of best evidence-based practice in the hopes of improving service user outcomes and quality of life and reducing the impact this problem has upon district nursing services with regards to time and resources. With the increasing success of New Journalism before World War 1, hopes for labour daily papers crystallised. This article speculates on four attempts to counter conservative media as seen through the youthful eyes of Vance Palmer. In London, he participated in the foundation of the successful labour paper the Daily Herald, and he wrote for the British Labour Party daily. Returning to Australia in 1912, he sought to work for a proposed Sydney-based daily paper, and for the successful Queensland's Labor Daily Standard, as a correspondent. When taking Palmer's observations into account—drawing on original material from his letters, and set in a context of comparing the four papers—a largely untold story of ambitious design emerges. The scheme of Commonwealth Labor daily newspapers across the nation still lacks its history. Cultural leadership through the commitment of leading men and women, even strike leaders, able to appeal to the passions of writers, editors and readers, and experienced staff utilising an inclusive forum inviting diverse and militant standpoints, may have proved more critical to riding the explosion of radical left idealism in the successful establishment of newspapers, and surviving the suppression of war, than managerial leadership or raising enough economic capital. The inability to place a light tip in close approximation to a resin restoration may affect the resultant polymerization and clinical durability of the restoration. This research measured light intensity at the surface of a resin composite, as well as 2 mm within its bulk, as the tip-to-resin distance is moved from 0 to 10 mm. The polymerization of the resin composite at both locations was measured for the various tip distances using exposure durations of 10, 20, 40, and 60 seconds. Light intensity did not decrease with the inverse square of the tip distance. The polymerization on the surface was greatly dependent upon the duration of exposure. The extent of polymerization 2 mm below the surface was still dependent primarily upon exposure duration, but intensity had a significant affect. For exposure durations of 10, 20, and 40 seconds, a tip distance greater than 4 mm demonstrated a significant decrease in resin polymerization 2 mm below the resin composite surface. The responses of Australian women’s suffrage leaders in Australia to World War 1 is largely untold except through their biographies. This article revisits the anti-war advocacy of Adela Pankhurst, a member of the leading English suffragette family, when she toured Queensland as a Women’s Peace Army organiser, in 1915, and 1916. Adela Pankhurst’s life and work has had a mixed representation by her biographers and in accounts of her family. In this detailed study of her tours in Queensland, when her life story is viewed through both the lens of state histories and the international campaign against war as a means of solving conflict, her importance as a leading public intellectual emerges. Vance and Nettie Palmer were among Australia's most important literary partnerships. Previous accounts of their life and work underplay their commitment to the creation of an environmental imagination. After the trauma and disillusion of the Great War, they lived in Caloundra from 1925 to 1929 (and from then had an ongoing connection). While it is generally acknowledged how important their time there was in terms of Vance's emerging work in literary fiction, and through Nettie's work as a freelance journalist, what has not been addressed is their extraordinary environmental writings about the region. Regional writings were largely dismissed in the 1990s as of comparative insignificance to national narratives - just as today the reputation of the inter-war writers, those associated with the Palmers, is at a low ebb. During the 1920s, Nettie developed critical categories to accommodate a double standard in Australian writing: regional and universal literature. She went on to argue for the support of writing in Australia at the regional level. Vance reflected on his explorations of place directly in a series of articles. This paper reframes the Palmers' Caloundra work in the 'bio-regional' terms of climate change and the historical cultural imaginary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the halcyon days of publishing in Australia, in the 1970s and 1980s, the University of Queensland Press (UQP) established an innovative series on the Australian Environment edited by Alan Gilpin. The series emerged from the flourishing scientific, environmental and conservation discourses. This was not the only way, or even then the central way, UQP addressed environmental issues. On the one hand, the Press actively supported the emergence of an Australian postcolonial canon in fiction and poetry through (re)publishing the works of Steele Rudd, Vance Palmer and Peter Carey. In the need to develop an international market for their books, however, fiction editors could easily and did edit out descriptions of the Australian environments. On the other hand, the Press published technical studies such as a series on Australian Ecology. With the rupture in the management of the Press in 1983, the Australian Environment series was stopped. By the 1990s with the increasing recognition of the Australian Aboriginal way of thinking about country (and the delineation of Australasian territorial copyright) UQP pulled back from developing a global market in order to establish a successful Black Australian Writers series for, primarily, a national readership. The genre of 'bush realism' and other new writing by non-Indigenous Australians that drew on environmental differences of the 'new world' in contrast to the old, as a result, shifted away from central stage in narratives of the nation.
