Outdoor spatial mosquito repellents, such as mosquito coils or heating devices, release pyrethroid insecticides into the air to provide protection from mosquitoes within a defined area. This broadcast discharge of pyrethroids into the environment raises concern about the effect on non-target organisms. A previous study found that prallethrin discharged from a heating device did not affect honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) [Hymenoptera: Apidae] foraging or recruitment. In this second study, there was no significant difference in foraging frequency (our primary outcome), waggle dance propensity, or persistency in honey bees collecting sucrose solution between those exposed to metofluthrin from a different heating device and bees exposed to a non-metofluthrin control. One measure, waggle dance frequency, was higher in the metofluthrin treatment than the control but this outcome was likely a spurious result due to the small sample size. The small particle size of the emissions, averaging 4.43 µm, from the heated spatial repellent products, which remain airborne with little settling, may play an important role in the lack of effect found on honey bee foraging. Numerous research studies have been completed on the topic of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). As individuals with this diagnosis are frequently treated by occupational therapists, this review will focus on research that has been completed on ASD that will provide insights into the understanding and treatment of children on the spectrum.

In this classroom study, the authors examine the use of popular psychology myths as a frame for literary analysis in high school English. The study reflects a cultural studies approach to teaching that attends to students' cultural awareness in interpreting what they read. Previous research has demonstrated that students' cultural awareness, in general, offers a rich framework for literary interpretation. Students in an Advanced Placement junior English class wrote analytic essays in which they used popular psychology myths, pervasive cultural tropes about human behavior, to evaluate whether characters in F. Scott Fitzgerald 's novel "The Great Gatsby" perpetuate or challenge the myths. Analysis of the essays demonstrated that the myths provided a compelling frame for character analysis, prompting students to consider nuances in character behavior. Moreover, the analysis indicated that the myths offer a way for teachers to prompt students' understanding of how readers and fiction authors can perpetuate or challenge simplistic notions of human behavior.

The authors review the rationale for including RO DBT in a UCCS and the process of implementing the treatment at their center. This paper evaluates this newly implemented treatment by examining clinician experience, feasibility, and adaptability of RO DBT including Words of Wisdom regarding future implementations of RO DBT in a UCCS. Background: Myocardial perfusion imaging is commonly performed using SPECT, where both general‐purpose and dedicated scanners are available. A limitation with general‐purpose systems has been the inability to image dynamically since different projections are obtained far apart in time due to scanner rotation. Dedicated systems can have this capability since they acquire completely sampled projections (i.e., those with enough angular views for reconstruction) with short time frames. C‐SPECT, does not need any scanner or patient motion to obtain complete projections, allowing fast dynamics. When imaging fast dynamics, the optimal collimator settings are not necessarily the same as for static imaging, where longer acquisitions can be utilized. Thus, C‐SPECT offers adaptive collimation in the transverse and axial directions. Purpose: The performance of adaptation in the axial direction was characterized herein. Methods: The ratio of the resolution metric in high‐sensitivity mode to that in the high‐resolution mode, termed resolution boost factor, was determined. Analogously, the sensitivity boost factor was also determined. Comparisons were made with theory and simulations. Results: The boost factors for resolution and sensitivity, averaged over the 14 modules of the system, were determined to be 1.72 and 1.75, respectively. Conclusions: The boost factors, which ideally would be two, were between 10% and 15% below optimal values and tracked each other, suggesting mechanical challenges in the apparatus, such as incomplete closure of adjacent slats, but show reasonably successful adaptation between modes. Because nontarget, beneficials, like insect pollinators, may be exposed unintentionally to insecticides, it is important to evaluate the impact of chemical controls on the behaviors performed by insect pollinators in field trials. Here we examine the impact of a portable mosquito repeller, which emits prallethrin, a pyrethroid insecticide, on honey bee foraging and recruitment using a blinded, randomized, paired, parallel group trial. We found no significant effect of the volatilized insecticide on foraging frequency (our primary outcome), waggle dance propensity, waggle dance frequency, and feeder persistency (our secondary outcomes), even though an additional deposition study confirmed that the treatment device was performing appropriately. These results may be useful to consumers that are interested in repelling mosquitos, but also concerned about potential consequences to beneficial insects, such as honey bees. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There is growing evidence that cannabis can have negative effects on health. While the ongoing debate about the nature and duration of these effects recognizes mild cognitive impairment, the evidence for irreversibility of cognitive impairment and causal links with psychiatric illness is not conclusive. There is undoubtedly potential for impairment of respiratory functioning, but that will depend on lifetime load and in most cases is confounded with tobacco smoking. There is a lack of data that addresses the long-term cannabis user's perspective. How do long-term cannabis users perceive the impact of their cannabis use on their own lives and what are the policy implications of their experience and perceptions of cannabis use? A recent study of long-term cannabis users explored a number of issues that have relevance for policy in relation to health education interventions. Quantitative data gathered from 405 long-term cannabis users provide insights into the impact of different levels of cannabis use over ten or more years on a range of issues: health; dependence; cannabis-related beliefs and attitudes; and preferred sources of cannabis-related information. Implications and the need for innovative approaches to cannabis-related health education are discussed.

Transboundary animal diseases, such as foot and mouth disease (FMD) pose a significant and ongoing threat to global food security. Such diseases can produce large, spatially complex outbreaks. Mathematical models are often used to understand the spatio-temporal dynamics and create response plans for possible disease introductions. Model assumptions regarding transmission behavior of premises and movement patterns of livestock directly impact our understanding of the ecological drivers of outbreaks and how to best control them. Here, we investigate the impact that these assumptions have on model predictions of FMD outbreaks in the U.S. using models of livestock shipment networks and disease spread. We explore the impact of changing assumptions about premises transmission behavior, both by including within-herd dynamics, and by accounting for premises type and increasing the accuracy of shipment predictions. We find that the impact these assumptions have on outbreak predictions is less than the impact of the underlying livestock demography, but that they are important for investigating some response objectives, such as the impact on trade. These results suggest that demography is a key ecological driver of outbreaks and is critical for making robust predictions but that understanding management objectives is also important when making choices about model assumptions. Objective: This study assessed brief intervention (BI) activity and organisation capacity for smoking, nutrition, alcohol and physical activity (SNAP framework) and key clinical prevention activities in four Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander medical services in Queensland. Methods: A mixed methods design was used including: staff surveys of knowledge and attitudes (n=39), focus groups to discuss perceived barriers and enablers and chart audits (n=150) to quantify existing BI activity. Results: Of 50 clinical staff, 46 participated in the staff survey and focus groups across the four sites. BI was perceived to be important. There was significant variation in completion of records for SNAP risk factors, key clinical and BI activities across the sites. At least one SNAP factor status was recorded in 130/150 (86.7%) patient charts audited and there was a significant trend of increased recording of SNAP factors with increasing number of patient visits. Of those identified at risk 78% received at least one BI. Where risk was identified 65/96 (67.7%) patients required multiple BIs. BI for tobacco use was consistently high across all sites. Only one site recorded regular care planning and Adult Health Checks. Impacting factors included leadership, high staff turnover, multiple medical records and staff health status. Conclusions: Inflexible staff training, competing health priorities and high levels of staff turnover were identified as key barriers to the delivery of BI in clinical settings. The data suggests a good base of existing BI activity for smoking and key clinical activities which may improve with further support. Background: Pediatric patients with oncologic and hematologic diagnoses who experience newly acquired functional deficits during a hospitalization may benefit from intensive therapies. However, acute medical issues or disease treatment plans may prevent a safe transfer to the inpatient rehabilitation unit. Accordingly, Short-term Pediatric Rehabilitation Intensive Therapy (SPRINT), a 2-week inpatient intensive therapy program, was developed for pediatric patients on an acute care service. Objective: To assess functional outcomes of SPRINT participants, adverse events associated with the program, and measures of patients' fatigue, sadness, nervousness, and pain by parents and patients at the start and end of SPRINT. Design: Retrospective cohort study. Settings: Hematology-Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant units at regional pediatric tertiary care hospital. Participants: Eighteen pediatric patients (50% female, age 1.9-17.8 years) participated in SPRINT, and 11 parents and 4 children completed questionnaires. Interventions: Not applicable. Main Outcome Measures: Functional outcomes of SPRINT participants measured by Caregiver Assistance section of the Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory (PEDI), adverse events identified on chart review, and inquiry of participants' symptoms before and after SPRINT with a questionnaire. Results: Common diagnoses included leukemia and lymphoma (N = 9, 50%) and central nervous system tumor (N = 6, 33%). Deconditioning (N = 18, 100%) and peripheral neuropathy (N = 8, 44.4%) were common rehabilitation diagnoses. Significant gains were found in tasks in self-care and mobility domains of PEDI (all P < .05), as well as functional expression in social function domain (P = .03). No adverse events related to SPRINT participation were identified. There was no significant difference between pre- and post-SPRINT questionnaire responses. Conclusions: SPRINT is an alternative model for intensive rehabilitation care delivery. Data suggested that SPRINT participation was safe and resulted in significant gains in mobility, self-care, and functional expression for pediatric patients with hematologic and oncologic diagnoses while receiving acute care. Purpose: To examine the experiences of people with ALS (pALS) and their communication partners (cALS) regarding receiving speech-generating device (SGD) evaluation and treatment via telepractice. Method: Eight pALS along with a primary cALS participated in telepractice SGD evaluation and treatment with an augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) specialist and representatives from multiple SGD vendors. Participants were interviewed postevaluation and post-SGD training to examine their experiences. Mixed methods data were collected through Likert scale responses and qualitative interviews. Results: Telepractice SGD evaluation and training were feasible and resulted in all pALS receiving SGDs they were able to use to communicate. In both Likert rating items and qualitative interviews, participants rated the telepractice experience very highly in terms of giving them access to AAC services via an AAC specialist that they would not have otherwise been able to access, and doing so in a format that was possible given their limitations in mobility, endurance, and caregiver availability. Suggestions for improving the telepractice experience were provided. Conclusions: Telepractice should be considered as an option to provide vital SGD services to patients who are geographically remote, mobility impaired, unable to leave their home, experience fatigue with travel, or otherwise would not have access to these specialized services. Telepractice allows patients to preserve their time and energy for the assessment and treatment sessions, resulting in perhaps deeper and more frequent engagement in evaluation and training. Telepractice could serve as an alternative to outpatient, in-person evaluations, or be utilized in conjunction with in-person appointments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) represent the leading concept for mRNA delivery. Unsaturated lipids play important roles in nature with potential for mRNA therapeutics, but are difficult to access through chemical synthesis. To systematically study the role of unsaturation, modular reactions were utilized to access a library of 91 amino lipids, enabled by the synthesis of unsaturated thiols. An ionizable lipid series (4A3) emerged from in vitro and in vivo screening, where the 4A3 core with a citronellol‐based (Cit) periphery emerged as best. We studied the interaction between LNPs and a model endosomal membrane where 4A3‐Cit demonstrated superior lipid fusion over saturated lipids, suggesting its unsaturated tail promotes endosomal escape. Furthermore, 4A3‐Cit significantly improved mRNA delivery efficacy in vivo through Selective ORgan Targeting (SORT), resulting in 18‐fold increased protein expression over parent LNPs. These findings provide insight into how lipid unsaturation promotes mRNA delivery and demonstrate how lipid mixing can enhance efficacy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ischemic heart disease remains a significant public health concern, accentuating the importance of basic research and therapeutic studies of small animals in which myocardial changes can be reproducibly detected and quantified. Few or no studies have investigated the performance of microSPECT in quantifying myocardial lesions. We utilized three versions of a multi-compartment phantom containing two left ventricular myocardial compartments (one uniform and one with a transmural 'cold' defect), a ventricular blood pool, and a background compartment, where each version had a different myocardial wall thickness (0.75, 1.0 and 1.25 mm). Each compartment was imaged separately while acquiring list-mode data. The separate compartment data were manipulated into a single data set with a known defect contrast, blood-pool and background activity. Data were processed with background-free defect-contrast values of 0 (no defect), −0.25, −0.5, −0.75, and −1.0 (all defect), three ratios of blood-pool to myocardial activity, 0 (no blood pool activity), 0.1, and 0.2 (20% of the activity in the healthy myocardial compartment), and three ratios of uniform background 0 (no background activity), 0.1 and 0.2, relative to the healthy myocardial compartment. For each wall thickness, defect contrast, blood-pool, and background activity combination, 25 list-mode noise realizations were generated and reconstructed. Volumes of interest were drawn and used to determine mean contrast recovery coefficients (CRCs) over the noise ensembles. We developed a slope-analysis procedure to estimate a single CRC over all contrast levels, with resulting CRC values (for no blood-pool and no background) of 0.848, 0.946, and 0.834 for the 0.75, 1.0, and 1.25 mm wall thicknesses, respectively. We also determined and validated a reprocessing method to calculate an ideal CRC. This work demonstrates the quantitative abilities of microSPECT for myocardial-defect imaging utilizing CRC and establishes a framework for evaluating defect-imaging capabilities in other systems. Diffusion Monte Carlo simulations are applied to investigate the effects of deuteration on the fluxionality of C[H.sub.5.sup.+] or C[D.sub.5.sup.+] by using an ab initio potential surface. The effects of deuteration on the low-resolution vibrational spectrum and also the consequences of the quenching of the fluxional behavior of C[H.sub.5.sup.+] on the vibrational spectrum of its isotopologues are investigated.

Accessible summary: What is known on the subject?: Internationally, systematic reviews have identified evidence of equal or improved clinical outcomes comparing advanced practitioner treatment with medical treatment as usual, across a range of specialities.Studies of nurse consultants in the United Kingdom have largely been non‐empirical. Most studies specifically related to nurse consultant roles in mental health services are case studies or reports of views on this role. What this paper adds to existing knowledge?: The study demonstrates that nurse consultant numbers vary over time and by clinical specialty. This is influenced by the value invested in the role by local nursing leadership and by national policy change.A lack of role clarity affects the uptake and sustainability of advanced practice roles internationally and is also an issue for the nurse consultant role in England's mental health services. What are the implications for practice?: Successfully introducing advanced practice nursing roles in mental health services requires role clarity and support from local nurse directors.The continued absence of robust evidence as to the clinical/cost‐effectiveness of nurse consultant roles in mental health settings places an onus on individual posts to generate data to justify the role at a time of financial constraint.Detailed post holder characteristics reported in this paper provide a basis for future comparison with other advanced practice roles in mental health services and other specialties nationally and internationally. Introduction: The nurse consultant is an advanced practice role providing expert clinical practice, consultancy and professional leadership. To date, few studies have examined this role within mental health services and none have described the professional characteristics of post holders. Aims: The main aims of the study were to identify changes in nurse consultant numbers in mental health services, identify post holder characteristics and factors influencing number of posts. Method: We used a triangulated mixed methods approach comprised of a longitudinal examination of national workforce data, a national cross‐sectional survey of post holder characteristics and semi‐structured interviews with directors of nursing. Results: Of 58 mental health organizations, 51 (88%) responded, identifying 123 nurse consultant posts, and a range of 0–12 posts per organization. One in 229 mental health nurses and 1 in 186 learning disability nurses were nurse consultant. An average of 40% of nurse consultants' work time was reported as being in clinical practice. Themes identified as important in relation to role sustainability were cost and value, contribution of individual post holders, role clarity and domains of work. Discussion: Nurse consultants are represented to a greater extent in the mental health service workforce than in nursing generally, but their roles often lack clarity. Attitudes of local professional leaders and national policies are likely to affect post numbers. Implications for practice: Developing and sustaining nurse consultant roles requires role clarity and active support from nurse leaders.
