Once thought to be a unique capability of the Langerhans islets in the pancreas of mammals, insulin (INS) signaling is now recognized as an evolutionarily ancient function going back to prokaryotes. INS is ubiquitously present not only in humans but also in unicellular eukaryotes, fungi, worms, and Drosophila. Remote homologue identification also supports the presence of INS and INS receptor in corals where the availability of glucose is largely dependent on the photosynthetic activity of the symbiotic algae. The cnidarian animal host of corals operates together with a 20,000-sized microbiome, in direct analogy to the human gut microbiome. In humans, aberrant INS signaling is the hallmark of metabolic disease, and is thought to play a major role in aging, and age-related diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease. We here would like to argue that a broader view of INS beyond its human homeostasis function may help us understand other organisms, and in turn, studying those non-model organisms may enable a novel view of the human INS signaling system. To this end, we here review INS signaling from a new angle, by drawing analogies between humans and corals at the molecular level.

We investigate the reconfigurability and tunability of the tessellation of Tachi-Miura Polyhedron (TMP), an origami-based cellular structure composed of bellows-like unit cells. Lattice-based three-dimensional mechanical metamaterials have recently received significant scientific interest due to their superior and unique mechanical performance compared to conventional materials. However, it is often challenging to achieve tunability and reconfigurability from these metamaterials, since their geometry and functionality tend to be pre-determined in the design and fabrication stage. Here, we utilize TMP's highly versatile phase-transforming and tessellating capabilities to design reconfigurable metamaterial architecture with tunable mechanical properties. The theoretical analyses and experiments with heat processing discover the wide range of the in-situ tunability of the metamaterial – specifically orders of magnitude change in effective density, Young's modulus, and Poisson's ratio – after its fabrication within the elastic deformation regime. We also witness a rather unique behavior of the inverse correlation between effective density and stiffness. This mechanical platform paves the way to design the metamaterial that can actively adapt to various external environments.

Topological mechanical metamaterials have been considered effective for energy manipulation via edge states, but manipulating these states remains challenging. Here, a Kresling origami mechanical metamaterial hosts multiple topological edge states at finite frequencies, which can be manipulated and transferred across the boundaries of the system by adjusting the lattice torsion.

Environment stress is a major threat to the existence of coral reefs and has generated a lot of interest in the coral research community. Under the environmental stress, corals can experience tissue loss and/or the breakdown of symbiosis between the cnidarian host and its symbiotic algae causing the coral tissue to appear white as the skeleton can be seen by transparency. Image analysis is a common method used to assess tissue response under the environmental stress. However, the traditional approach is limited by the dynamic nature of the coral-algae symbiosis. Here, we observed coral tissue response in the scleractinian coral, Montipora capricornis, using high frequency image analysis throughout the experiment, as opposed to the typical start/end point assessment method. Color analysis reveals that the process can be divided into five stages with two critical stages according to coral tissue morphology and color ratio. We further explore changes to the morphology of individual polyps by means of the Pearson correlation coefficient and recurrence plots, where the quasi-periodic and nonstationary dynamics can be identified. The recurrence quantification analysis also allows the comparison between the different polyps. Our research provides a detailed visual and mathematical analysis of coral tissue response to environmental stress, which potentially shows universal applicability. Moreover, our approach provides a robust quantitative advancement for improving our insight into a suite of biotic responses in the perspective of coral health evaluation and fate prediction.

With the ease of gene sequencing and the technology available to study and manipulate non-model organisms, the extension of the methodological toolbox required to translate our understanding of model organisms to non-model organisms has become an urgent problem. For example, mining of large coral and their symbiont sequence data is a challenge, but also provides an opportunity for understanding functionality and evolution of these and other non-model organisms. Much more information than for any other eukaryotic species is available for humans, especially related to signal transduction and diseases. However, the coral cnidarian host and human have diverged over 700 million years ago and homologies between proteins in the two species are therefore often in the gray zone, or at least often undetectable with traditional BLAST searches. We introduce a two-stage approach to identifying putative coral homologues of human proteins. First, through remote homology detection using Hidden Markov Models, we identify candidate human homologues in the cnidarian genome. However, for many proteins, the human genome alone contains multiple family members with similar or even more divergence in sequence. In the second stage, therefore, we filter the remote homology results based on the functional and structural plausibility of each coral candidate, shortlisting the coral proteins likely to have conserved some of the functions of the human proteins. We demonstrate our approach with a pipeline for mapping membrane receptors in humans to membrane receptors in corals, with specific focus on the stony coral, P. damicornis. More than 1000 human membrane receptors mapped to 335 coral receptors, including 151 G protein coupled receptors (GPCRs). To validate specific sub-families, we chose opsin proteins, representative GPCRs that confer light sensitivity, and Toll-like receptors, representative non-GPCRs, which function in the immune response, and their ability to communicate with microorganisms. Through detailed structure-function analysis of their ligand-binding pockets and downstream signaling cascades, we selected those candidate remote homologues likely to carry out related functions in the corals. This pipeline may prove generally useful for other non-model organisms, such as to support the growing field of synthetic biology.

Origami-inspired metamaterials are attractive for their programmable shape-shifting properties but are typically characterized by low structural rigidity. Here, 3D heterogeneous origami structures display highly reconfigurable mechanical properties, including finely controllable and reversible stiffness variation.

Background and Objectives: The fruit of Schisandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baill. is widely used medicinally to treat coughs, asthma, exhaustion, eczema, and pruritus in Northeast Asian countries, including Korea, China, and Japan. This study was designed to investigate the effects of S. chinensis on dermatitis in mice with calcipotriol (MC-903)-induced atopic dermatitis (AD), and its effects on skin barrier dysfunction was also investigated. Materials and Methods: The inhibitory effects of an ethanolic extract of S. chinensis (EESC) on skin lesions, water content, water-holding capacity (WHC), histopathological abnormalities, and inflammatory cytokine and chemokine levels were evaluated in mice with AD induced by MC903. Results: Topical EESC ameliorated skin lesions, reduced skin water content, and increased MC903-induced WHC. EESC also prevented MC-903-induced histopathological abnormalities such as epidermal disruption, hyperkeratosis, spongiotic changes, and immune cell infiltration in inflamed tissue. Moreover, topical EESC reduced MC-903-induced levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, such as tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, monocyte chemotactic protein (MCP)-1, and thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP). Furthermore, unlike dexamethasone, EESC did not reduce the spleen/body weight ratio. Conclusions: These results suggest that S. chinensis can be used as an alternative to external corticosteroids and that its anti-inflammatory and skin barrier dysfunction-restoring effects are related to the downregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, such as TNF-α, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, and TSLP.

Topological boundary modes in mechanical systems have recently attracted great attention due to their unique protection features. Here, tunable corner localization of mechanical waves is numerically and experimentally demonstrated in a continuous elastic plate with hexagonally arranged bolts.

Abstract Coral reef ecosystems support significant biological activities and harbor huge diversity, but they are facing a severe crisis driven by anthropogenic activities and climate change. An important behavioral trait of the coral holobiont is coral motion, which may play an essential role in feeding, competition, reproduction, and thus survival and fitness. Therefore, characterizing coral behavior through motion analysis will aid our understanding of basic biological and physical coral functions. However, tissue motion in the stony scleractinian corals that contribute most to coral reef construction are subtle and may be imperceptible to both the human eye and commonly used imaging techniques. Here we propose and apply a systematic approach to quantify and visualize subtle coral motion across a series of light and dark cycles in the scleractinian coral Montipora capricornis. We use digital image correlation and optical flow techniques to quantify and characterize minute coral motions under different light conditions. In addition, as a visualization tool, motion magnification algorithm magnifies coral motions in different frequencies, which explicitly displays the distinctive dynamic modes of coral movement. Specifically, our assessment of displacement, strain, optical flow, and mode shape quantify coral motion under different light conditions, and they all show that M. capricornis exhibits more active motions at night compared to day. Our approach provides an unprecedented insight into micro-scale coral movement and behavior through macro-scale digital imaging, thus offering a useful empirical toolset for the coral research community.

Origami-based mechanical metamaterials have recently received significant scientific interest due to their versatile and reconfigurable architectures. However, it is often challenging to account for all possible geometrical configurations of the origami assembly when each origami cell can take multiple phases. Here, we investigate the reconfigurability of a tessellation of origami-based cellular structures composed of bellows-like unit cells, specifically Tachi-Miura Polyhedron (TMP). One of the unique features of the TMP is that a single cell can take four different phases in a rigid foldable manner. Therefore, the TMP tessellation can achieve various shapes out of one original assembly. To assess the geometrical validity of the astronomical number of origami phase combinations, we build a graph-theoretic framework to describe the connectivity of unit cells and to analyze the reconfigurability of the tessellations. Our approach can pave the way to develop a systematic computational tool to design origami-based mechanical metamaterials with tailored properties.

Tentacles on soft corals exhibit intriguing spatiotemporal dynamics of motions, which may benefit their survival and fitness. Despite their significance, studies of their quantitative properties still remain challenging and unexplored. Such motions are characterized by coherent patterns across both space and time, yet computational methods that address spatiotemporal dynamics are rare. Here, we introduce a data-driven method called dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) to explore the spatiotemporal behavior of tentacles of Anthelia glauca, where the motions of eight tentacles are captured by stereovision and object tracking techniques. The DMD reveals the stochastic motions of the tentacles, which can be well modeled as 1/f-type motion. Additionally, the pulsation behaviors of our soft corals are also captured by analyzing the DMD spectrum and the sliding-window DMD, where these behaviors emerge as spatial DMD modes with increased power. Finally, the impact of light conditions on the 1/f-type motion and pulsation behaviors is explored, where certain light conditions can manipulate the 1/f-type motion and emergence of pulsation behaviors. Our work, combining experimental observation and a data-driven method to characterize spatiotemporal motions of coral tentacles, paves the way to exploring the complex behaviors of individual organisms and colonies, and the effect from changing environmental variables.

Model systems approaches search for commonality in patterns underlying biological diversity and complexity led by common evolutionary paths. The success of the approach does not rest on the species chosen but on the scalability of the model and methods used to develop the model and engage research. Fine-tuning approaches to improve coral cell cultures will provide a robust platform for studying symbiosis breakdown, the calcification mechanism and its disruption, protein interactions, micronutrient transport/exchange, and the toxicity of nanoparticles, among other key biological aspects, with the added advantage of minimizing the ethical conundrum of repeated testing on ecologically threatened organisms. The work presented here aimed to lay the foundation towards development of effective methods to sort and culture reef-building coral cells with the ultimate goal of obtaining immortal cell lines for the study of bleaching, disease and toxicity at the cellular and polyp levels. To achieve this objective, the team conducted a thorough review and tested the available methods (i.e. cell dissociation, isolation, sorting, attachment and proliferation). The most effective and reproducible techniques were combined to consolidate culture methods and generate uncontaminated coral cell cultures for ~7 days (10 days maximum). The tests were conducted on scleractinian corals Pocillopora acuta of the same genotype to harmonize results and reduce variation linked to genetic diversity. The development of cell separation and identification methods in conjunction with further investigations into coral cell-type specific metabolic requirements will allow us to tailor growth media for optimized monocultures as a tool for studying essential reef-building coral traits such as symbiosis, wound healing and calcification at multiple scales.

Metamaterials are a class of engineered materials that often violate the routine assumptions that apply to ordinary materials. While metamaterials are typically assembled from carefully designed mesoscale units, the intended bulk-scale functionality can be obscured by unintended emergent effects driven by non-additive unit-unit interactions. These interactions are often sensitive to the number of units and their overall arrangement, making them extrinsic to the unit-scale design. As such, the emergence of extrinsic effects adds a significant hurdle for the development of general-purpose metamaterial technologies. Here, we reconceptualize bulk-scale extrinsic properties as a design opportunity and develop an approach that repurposes them in a new class of exponentially reconfigurable origami-inspired mechanical metamaterials. We illustrate the use of extrinsic properties to design a single general-purpose structure that can be transformed into a variety of passive mechanical devices including a waveguide, a wave lens, and a wave cloak. Bench-top experiments validate the core concepts of our approach and show how unintentional extrinsic effects become useful for applications of reconfigurable metamaterials.

Wave propagation is often nonlinear in character, yet the interplay between disorder and nonlinearity remains elusive. Kim et al. use experiments and corroborating numerical simulations to investigate this phenomenon and demonstrate superdiffusive energy transport in disordered granular chains.

We numerically investigate the topological phase transition induced purely by disorder in a spring-mass chain. We employ two types of disorders—chiral and random types—to explore the interplay between topology and disorder. By tracking the evolution of real-space topological invariants, we obtain the topological phase diagrams and demonstrate the bilateral capacity of disorder to drive topological transitions, from topologically nontrivial to trivial and vice versa. The corresponding transition is accompanied by the realization of a mechanical topological Anderson insulator. The findings from this study hint that the combination of disorder and topology can serve as an efficient control knob to manipulate the transfer of mechanical energy.

Origami is a popular method to design building blocks for mechanical metamaterials. Here, the authors assemble a volumetric origami-based structure, predict its axial and rotational movements during folding, and demonstrate the operation of mechanical one- and two-bit memory storage.

The recent emergence of topological insulators in condensed matter physics has inspired analogous wave phenomena in mechanical systems. However, to date, the design of these mechanical systems has been limited mostly to discrete lattices or perforated structures. Here, we take a ubiquitous design of a bolted elastic plate and demonstrate that it can guide flexural waves crisply around sharp bends. We show that this continuum system eliminates unwanted in-plane plate modes and allows the manipulation of low-frequency flexural modes by exploiting the local resonance of the bolts. We report the existence of a pair of double Dirac cones near the resonant frequency of the bolts, one of which leads to the creation of a topological complete bandgap that forbids all the plate modes. These findings open new possibilities of managing multiple wave modes in elastic solids for applications in energy harvesting, impact mitigation, and structural health monitoring.

We propose a tunable cylinder-based granular system that is functionally graded in its stiffness distribution in space. With no initial compression given to the system, it supports highly nonlinear waves propagating under an impulse excitation. We investigate analytically, numerically and experimentally the ability to accelerate and decelerate the impulse wave without a significant scattering in the space domain. Moreover, the gradient in stiffness results in the scaling of contact forces along the chain. We envision that such tunable systems can be used for manipulating highly nonlinear impulse waves for novel sensing and impact mitigation purposes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigate the transmission and backscattering of solitary waves in granular crystals to assess their initial strains under various levels of compression. We assemble a one-dimensional granular chain that includes a pair of heavy impurities to scatter incident solitary waves. Using a scanning laser Doppler vibrometer and an instrumented sensor particle, we experimentally show that the speed of solitary waves backscattered in the region of impurities is highly sensitive to the applied strains. Based on this pulse-echo mechanism of solitary waves, we briefly demonstrate the feasibility of localized strain sensing via multiple scatterers distributed in a granular chain. We find that numerical results obtained from a discrete element model are in excellent agreement with experimental results. We investigate the tunability of phononic crystals consisting of arrays of cylindrical elements using theoretical, numerical, and experimental approaches. We show that when these systems are excited by a continuous dynamic signal under large static precompression, they support a characteristic band structure whose cutoff frequency can be controlled by changing the alignment angles or the static precompression. Furthermore, we report the formation of an additional pass band when there exists particles' eccentricity, which is caused by the coupling mechanism between longitudinal and shear modes. Osteoporosis is a well recognized problem affecting millions of individuals worldwide. The ability to diagnose problems in an effective, efficient, and affordable manner and identify individuals at risk is essential. Site-specific assessment of bone mechanical properties is necessary, not only in the process of fracture risk assessment, but may also be desirable for other applications, such as making intraoperative decisions during spine and joint replacement surgeries. The present study evaluates the use of a one-dimensional granular crystal sensor to measure the elastic properties of bone at selected locations via direct mechanical contact. The granular crystal is composed of a tightly packed chain of particles that interact according to the Hertzian contact law. Such chains represent one of the simplest systems to generate and propagate highly nonlinear acoustic signals in the form of compact solitary waves. First, we investigated the sensitivity of the sensor to known variations in bone density using a synthetic cancellous bone substitute, representing clinical bone quality ranging from healthy to osteoporotic. Once the relationship between the signal response and known bone properties was established, the sensor was used to assess the bone quality of ten human cadaveric specimens. The efficacy and accuracy of the sensor was then investigated by comparing the sensor measurements with the bone mineral density (BMD) obtained using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). The results indicate that the proposed technique is capable of detecting differences in bone quality. The ability to measure site-specific properties without exposure to radiation has the potential to be further developed for clinical applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a mesoscopic approach to granular crystal dynamics, which comprises a three-dimensional finite-element model and a one-dimensional regularized contact model. The approach investigates the role of vibrational-energy trapping effects in the dynamic behavior of one-dimensional chains of particles in contact (i.e., granular crystals), under small to moderate impact velocities. The only inputs of the models are the geometry and the elastic material properties ofthe individual particles that form the system. We present detailed verification results and validate the model comparing its predictions with experimental data. We study the interaction of highly nonlinear solitary waves propagating in granular crystals with an adjacent linear elastic medium. We investigate the effects of interface dynamics on the reflection of incident waves and on the formation of primary and secondary reflected waves. Experimental tests are performed to correlate the linear medium geometry, materials, and mass with the formation and propagation of reflected waves. We compare the experimental results with theoretical analysis based on the long-wavelength approximation and with numerical predictions obtained from discrete particle models. Experimental results are found to be in agreement with theoretical analysis and numerical simulations. This preliminary study establishes the foundation for utilizing reflected solitary waves as novel information carriers in nondestructive evaluation of elastic material systems. Stator insulation quality assessment is an important issue for pulsewidth modulation inverter-fed machines, since the stator insulation is exposed to increased thermal/electrical stresses. In this paper, a new approach for monitoring the condition of the stator insulation for inverter-fed machines is proposed. The main concept of the proposed approach is to apply various types of test voltages to the motor stator insulation using the inverter, to perform standard offline insulation tests whenever the motor is not operating. Two methods for testing the insulation with modifications to the inverter circuit are proposed and verified experimentally. The results show that the proposed technique provides a simple low cost solution for detecting stator insulation degradation at an early stage for reliable operation of inverter-fed machine systems, since the insulation condition can be monitored frequently. This not only helps prevent forced outages and safety risks due to insulation breakdown, but also helps perform maintenance in an efficient manner since individual motor maintenance can be prioritized and scheduled based on its present condition. An online technique for monitoring the condition of the groundwall (GW) and phase-to-phase (PP) insulation for three-phase ac-machine stator windings is proposed in this paper. Insulation-condition indicators such as capacitance, dissipation factor (tan δ), and ac insulation resistance are calculated online based on the differential leakage-current measurements for each phase. A model for a three-phase ac-machine insulation system is derived and analyzed for both offline and online testing. Guidelines for interpreting the measured indicators for determining the: 1) overall condition and 2) significant degradation in the individual GW and PP insulation for each phase of the stator are given based on the analysis. Experimental results on a 15-hp induction motor under intentional GW and PP insulation degradation conditions show that incipient insulation degradation can be detected and classified with high sensitivity. We present a resistive pressure sensor based on the thin film printed via melt electrospinning of polyether block amide (PEBA). This thin film is created by arranging the electrospun cylindrical fibers periodically into a narrow vertical wall. We coat this film using poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) and place it between top and bottom counter electrodes for the pressure sensor. With the application of pressure, the variation of the contact area between the electrode and the cylindrical surface of the film produces a sensitive current response for detecting a wide range of pressure with tunable sensitivities. We present the optimized process conditions of the melt electrospinning for the construction of the micro structured thin film. We also develop theoretical model based on the classical contact theory to characterize and predict the sensor responses. Finally, a multi-touch interface for a mobile device is demonstrated based on the described methods. We experimentally investigate a diagnostic technique for identifying a weak bond in composites using highly nonlinear solitary waves (HNSWs). We set up a one-dimensional chain of granular crystals, consisting of spherical particles with nonlinear interactions, to generate HNSWs. These solitary wave packets are transmitted into an inspection area of composites by making a direct contact with the chain. We demonstrate that a strong type of solitary waves injected to the weak bond area can break the weak bond of laminates, thereby causing delamination. Then, to identify the creation of the delamination, we transmit a weak type of solitary waves by employing the same apparatus, and measure the solitary waves reflected from the specimens. By analyzing these reflected solitary waves, we differentiate the weak bond samples with the pristine bond ones in an efficient and fast manner. The diagnostic results based on the proposed method are compared with the strength and energy release rate at bond interfaces, which are measured via standard testing methods such as three point bending and end notched flexure tests. This study shows the potential of solitary wave-based detection of weak bonds for hot spot monitoring of composite-based structures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We experimentally demonstrate the feasibility of visualizing stress waves propagating in plates using air-coupled acoustic emission sensors. Specifically, we employ a device that embeds arrays of microphones around an optical lens in a helical pattern. By implementing a beamforming technique, this remote sensing system allows us to record wave propagation events in situ via a single-shot and full-field measurement. This is a significant improvement over the conventional wave propagation tracking approaches based on laser doppler vibrometry or digital image correlation techniques. In this paper, we focus on demonstrating the feasibility and efficacy of this air-coupled acoustic emission technique by using large metallic plates exposed to external impacts. The visualization results of stress wave propagation will be shown under various impact scenarios. The proposed technique can be used to characterize and localize damage by detecting the attenuation, reflection, and scattering of stress waves that occurs at damage locations. This can ultimately lead to the development of new structural health monitoring and nondestructive evaluation methods for identifying hidden cracks or delaminations in metallic or composite plate structures, simultaneously negating the need for mounted contact sensors. We experimentally and numerically investigate a diagnostic method for detecting hidden delamination in composite panels, using highly nonlinear solitary waves. Solitary waves are a type of nonlinear waves with strong energy intensity and non-distortive nature, which can be controllably generated in one-dimensional granular crystals. In this study, we use granular crystals as a combined sensor and actuator to detect hidden delamination in carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite panels. Specifically, we locally excite a CFRP composite specimen using the granular crystal as an actuator and measure the reflected waves that carry the specimen’s diagnostic information using the same device as a sensor. We first investigate the effect of the panel’s boundary conditions on the response of the reflected solitary waves. We then investigate the interactions of a solitary wave with delamination hidden in the CFRP composite specimen. Lastly, we define a damage index based on the solitary waves’ responses to identify the location of the hidden delamination in the CFRP composite panel. The solitary wave-based diagnostic method can provide unique merits, such as portable and fast sensing of composites’ hidden damage, thereby with the potential of being used for hot spot monitoring of composite-based structures. A new diagnostic method to identify the location and magnitude of external impact on a sandwich structure using granular crystal sensors was studied. The granular crystal sensors are composed of one-dimensional chains of spherical particles that are inserted in a thick core of the sandwich structure. Given an external impact, the embedded sensors generate compact-supported, highly nonlinear solitary waves resulting from the dispersive and nonlinear characteristics of granular crystals. In this study, the propagating mechanism of highly nonlinear solitary waves in relation to various impact conditions was investigated. Particularly, it was reported that the flight time and magnitude of solitary waves are highly sensitive to the location and amplitude of impact. By analyzing measured solitary waves, the striker's impact location and drop height was successfully predicted nondestructively. It was found that the diagnostic results are in agreement with the numerical simulations obtained from a combined spectral element and discrete element model. The findings in this study imply that the granular crystal sensors can form a new type of impact monitoring system for a sandwich structure to achieve enhanced diagnostic accuracy and potentially to improve sensors' survivability under harsh mechanical and thermal environments. We present a gradient-index crystal that offers extreme tunability in terms of manipulating the propagation of elastic waves. For small-amplitude excitations, we achieve control over wave transmission depth into the crystal. We numerically and experimentally demonstrate a boomeranglike motion of a wave packet injected into the crystal. For large-amplitude excitations on the same crystal, we invoke nonlinear effects. We numerically and experimentally demonstrate asymmetric wave transmission from two opposite ends of the crystal. In this study, we investigate the enhancement of mechanical properties that shallow biangle, thin-ply laminates bring to fiber reinforced polymer composites. Coupon- and structural-level tests are conducted along with numerical simulations. According to the coupon tests, we find that shallow biangle fibers and thin plies can increase the axial stiffness of laminates significantly at the cost of a relatively small decrease in their transverse and shear moduli. For the structural tests, we fabricate composite wing structures using an out-of-autoclave vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding process. By conducting static bending tests, we show superior structural performances of the wing structure that employs shallow biangle fibers and thin-ply fabric, compared to those that use conventional fiber-angle and thick plies. Shallow biangle and thin-ply technologies can open new routes to designing composite structures with improved stiffness and strength with fast and cost-effective fabrication processes. We study scattering of waves by impurities in strongly precompressed granular chains. We explore the linear scattering of plane waves and identify a closed-form expression for the reflection and transmission coefficients for the scattering of the waves from both a single impurity and a double impurity. For single-impurity chains, we show that, within the transmission band of the host granular chain, high-frequency waves are strongly attenuated (such that the transmission coefficient vanishes as the wavenumber k→±π), whereas low-frequency waves are well-transmitted through the impurity. For double-impurity chains, we identify a resonance--enabling full transmission at a particular frequency--in a manner that is analogous to the Ramsauer-Townsend (RT) resonance from quantum physics. We also demonstrate that one can tune the frequency of the RT resonance to any value in the pass band of the host chain. We corroborate our theoretical predictions both numerically and experimentally, and we directly observe almost complete transmission for frequencies close to the RT resonance frequency. Finally, we show how this RT resonance can lead to the existence of reflectionless modes in granular chains (including disordered ones) with multiple double impurities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
