Graphene-based hybrid filler polymer composites represent a significant advancement in materials science and engineering due to graphene’s remarkable mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties. This comprehensive review systematically evaluates both traditional (e.g., mechanical and solution mixing) and modern fabrication techniques (e.g., in situ polymerization, chemical modification, electrospinning, and layer-by-layer assembly) employed in the synthesis of these composites, comparing their effectiveness in enhancing material properties such as strength, thermal stability, and conductivity. Emphasizing the synergistic interactions between graphene and other fillers within polymer matrices, the paper discusses mechanisms that lead to superior composite performance. A thorough survey of the literature highlights successful examples where these composites have demonstrated significant advancements in mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties. Three detailed tables summarize findings from published studies, illustrating the enhanced properties and achievements at various filler concentrations across different preparation methods. The review concludes by outlining future research directions aimed at optimizing graphene hybrid filler polymer composites for broader scientific and industrial utilization. By consolidating current knowledge and providing a practical resource, this review aims to guide researchers and practitioners in harnessing the full potential of these advanced materials.

Abstract Objective Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) poses a significant challenge to global health. Its pathophysiology involves interconnected processes, including cell proliferation, autophagy, and macrophage polarization. However, the role of Absent in Melanoma 2 (AIM2) in HCC remains elusive. Methods The expression of AIM2 in Huh‐7 and Hep3B cell lines was manipulated and cell proliferation, autophagy, apoptosis, and migration/invasion, together with the polarization of M2 macrophages, were evaluated. The markers of autophagy pathway, LC3B, Beclin‐1, and P62, underwent examination through Western blot analysis. An autophagy inhibitor, 3‐MA, was used to measured the role of autophagy in HCC. Finally, the effect of AIM2 overexpression on HCC was further evaluated using a subcutaneous tumor model in nude mice. Results Our results established that AIM2 overexpression inhibits HCC cell proliferation, migration, and invasion while promoting apoptosis and autophagy. Conversely, knockdown of AIM2 engendered opposite effects. AIM2 overexpression was correlated with reduced M2 macrophage polarization. The autophagy inhibitor substantiated AIM2's role in autophagy and identified its downstream impact on cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and macrophage polarization. In the in vivo model, overexpression of AIM2 led to the inhibition of HCC tumor growth. Conclusion The findings underscore AIM2's crucial function in modulating major biological processes in HCC, pointing to its potential as a therapeutic target. This study inaugurally demonstrated that AIM2 activates autophagy and influences macrophage polarization, playing a role in liver cancer progression.

Abstract High thermal conductive polymers have become more important because equipment requires high performance, high-energy density, and high integration. There are different strategies to make high thermal conductive polymers, among which is the synthesis of polymers in the liquid crystal phase. However, the thermal conductivity of such material is rarely beyond 1 W m−1 K−1 because of the disordered molecular directionality. The disordered directionality between crystal zones limits the thermal conductivity in a specific direction. Here, we show a method for unifying the direction of crystal zones by applying an external electric field on the liquid crystal monomers. Meanwhile, by exposing the transparent equipment and specially designed photopolymerisable monomer in UV light, the liquid crystal monomer is in situ polymerised into a liquid crystal polymer with a high intrinsic thermal conductivity of 1.02 W m−1 K−1. The molecular alignment was characterised and resulted in the resultant high conductivity.

Carbon nanotube (CNT) reinforced hybrid polymer composites offer multi-functional and sustainable materials due to fascinating mechanical, electrical and thermal properties. However, many studies reported the impact of CNTs orientation and synergistically enhanced properties of hybrid polymer composites but only a few review literatures are published. This review provides a comprehensive overview of published research by addressing CNT classification, preparation methods, mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties, and potential applications, as due to high strength, high young's modulus, higher thermal and electrical conductivity these nano-dimensional hybrid composites find many applications in aerospace, automotive, electronics, energy storage, sensors, electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, engineering, and biomedical fields.

Deep-sea equipment is generally made of lightweight and pressure-resistant materials in order to meet the requirements of the actual work. In order to explore marine resources better, it is necessary to research lightweight buoyancy materials for loading on mining equipment. These buoyancy materials contribute not only to providing adequate buoyancy to the mining equipment but also to reducing economic expenses. In this paper, hollow glass microspheres reinforced epoxy hollow spheres (HGMSs-EHSs) were prepared by the rolling ball method using expanded polystyrene (EPS), epoxy resin (EP), and HGMS as raw materials. Epoxy syntactic foam (ESF) was manufactured by blending EP, curing agent, HGMS, and HGMS-EHS with molding method. Basalt fiber (BF) reinforced ESF was fabricated by adding BFs to form a fiber network inside the syntactic foam. The results revealed that the density and compressive strength of ESF increased progressively with the number of HGMS-EHS layers. The density and compressive strength of ESF decreased prospectively with the increase of the stacking volume fraction of HGMS-EHS. The density and compressive strength of ESF increased gradually with the enlargement of the length and content of BF. In the range of influencing factors mentioned above, the density of ESF remains around 0.3 g/cm3, which has a low density. When the number of layers of HGMS-EHS was two, the stacking volume fraction was 90%, the length of BF was 12 mm, the content of BF was 4%, the density of BF-ESF was 0.316 g/cm3, and the compressive strength was 6.93 MPa. The compressive strength of prepared buoyancy material can meet the pressure resistance requirements for operations in waters of a certain depth. With a density of only 0.316 g/cm3, it provides sufficient buoyancy to balance the gravity of the equipment. Compared with the current study, in this paper, BFs were used as the reinforcing phase to prepare solid buoyancy foam with low density and high compressive strength. The experimental results demonstrate that this economical fiber material can effectively improve the compressive strength of buoyancy materials. This buoyancy material may be suitable for loading on small equipment for extracting marine resources. This work provides a reference for the preparation of low-density solid buoyancy materials.

Highlights A three-tiered thermal interface materials was proposed with the through-plane thermal conductivity up to176 W m−1 K−1 and contact thermal resistance as low as 4–6 K mm2 W−1 (double sides). The liquid metal acts as a buffer layer to connect vertically aligned graphene with the rough heater/heat sink, improving effective contact thermal conductance by more than an order of magnitude.

PurposeTo investigate the value of clinical-radiomics analysis based on T1-weighted imaging (T1WI) for predicting acute bilirubin encephalopathy (ABE) in neonates.MethodsIn this retrospective study, sixty-one neonates with clinically confirmed ABE and 50 healthy control neonates were recruited between October 2014 and March 2019. Two radiologists' visual diagnoses for all subjects were independently based on T1WI. Eleven clinical and 216 radiomics features were obtained and analyzed. Seventy percent of samples were randomly selected as the training group and were used to establish a clinical-radiomics model to predict ABE; the remaining samples were used to validate the performance of the models. The discrimination performance was assessed by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis.ResultsSeventy-eight neonates were selected for training (median age, 9 days; interquartile range, 7–20 days; 49 males) and 33 neonates for validation (median age, 10 days; interquartile range, 6–13 days; 24 males). Two clinical features and ten radiomics features were finally selected to construct the clinical-radiomics model. In the training group, the area under the ROC curve (AUC) was 0.90 (sensitivity: 0.814; specificity: 0.914); in the validation group, the AUC was 0.93 (sensitivity: 0.944; specificity: 0.800). The AUCs of two radiologists' and the radiologists' final visual diagnosis results based on T1WI were 0.57, 0.63, and 0.66, respectively. The discriminative performance of the clinical-radiomics model in the training and validation groups was increased compared to the radiologists' visual diagnosis (P < 0.001).ConclusionsA combined clinical-radiomics model based on T1WI has the potential to predict ABE. The application of the nomogram could potentially provide a visualized and precise clinical support tool.

Universal infant hepatitis B vaccination has been implemented more than three decades. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of antibodies to hepatitis B surface antigen (anti-HBs) and to hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc) in qualified blood donors in Nanjing, China. Plasmas of 815 qualified blood donors, collected from February through May 2019, were measured for anti-HBs and anti-HBc by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. There were 449 (55.1%) male and 366 (44.9%) female blood donors, with a median age of 28.9 years (18–60). The seroprevalence of anti-HBs was 58.8%, with no significant difference in different genders and different age groups. The overall prevalence of anti-HBc was 7.0%, with an increasing trend with age, from 0% in 18–20 years old group to 17.9% in 51–60 years old group (χ2 = 46.7965, p

The continuous development of the construction industry is also pushing concrete to change. Lightweight and high-strength concrete is becoming more and more important. Aerogel reinforced Epoxy Macrospheres (AR-EMS) were obtained by the ball rolling method. The lightweight concrete was prepared by mixing AR-EMS, cement, and hollow glass beads into the mold by the molding method. In this experiment, the influencing factors such as stacking volume fraction, inner diameter, wall thickness of AR-EMS and different types of hollow glass microspheres (HGMS), different content and length of glass fibers (GF) in matrix were studied. The comprehensive microstructure and performance characterization results show that AR-EMS binds well to the concrete matrix, and the addition of long fibers effectively improves the compressive strength of lightweight concrete. The lightweight concrete can meet the requirements of both high strength (11.46 MPa) and low density (0.897 g/cm³) when the matrix is filled with 2 wt% of 12 mm GF and AR-EMS with 9–10 mm-2layers-90%. Compared to the concrete without GF and the EPS-filled concrete, the maximum compressive strength was increased by 69% and 398%, respectively.

Water and nitrogen (N) deficiencies are the major limitations to crop production, particularly when they occur simultaneously. By supporting metabolism, even when tissue water capacity is lower, nitrogen and priming may reduce drought pressure on plants. Therefore, the current study investigates the impact of nitrogen and priming on wheat to minimize post-anthesis drought stress. Plant morphology, physiology, and biochemical changes were observed before, during, and after stress at the post-anthesis stage. The plants were exposed to three water levels, i.e., well watering (WW), water deficit (WD), and priming at jointing and water deficit (PJWD) at the post-anthesis stage, and two different nitrogen levels, i.e., N180 (N1) and N300 (N2). Nitrogen was applied in three splits, namely, sowing, jointing, and booting stages. The results showed that the photosynthesis of plants with N1 was significantly reduced under drought stress. Moreover, drought stress affected chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence and water-related parameters (osmotic potential, leaf water potential, and relative water content), grain filling duration (GFD), and grain yield. In contrast, PJWD couple with high nitrogen treatment (N300 kg ha–1) induced the antioxidant activity of peroxidase (37.5%), superoxide dismutase (29.64%), and catalase (65.66%) in flag leaves, whereas the levels of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and superoxide anion radical (O2–) declined by 58.56 and 66.64%, respectively. However, during the drought period, the primed plants under high nitrogen treatment (N300 kg ha–1) maintained higher Chl content, leaf water potential, and lowered lipid peroxidation (61%) (related to higher activities of ascorbate peroxidase and superoxide dismutase). Plants under high nitrogen treatment (N300 kg ha–1) showed deferred senescence, improved GFD, and grain yield. Consequently, the research showed that high nitrogen dose (N300 kg ha–1) played a synergistic role in enhancing the drought tolerance effects of priming under post-anthesis drought stress in wheat.

Aims: To determine how long SARS-CoV-2 virus RNA persists in fecal specimens in children with COVID-19. Methods: Retrospectively, ten children with confirmed COVID-19 in the Jinan Infectious Disease Hospital Affiliated to Shandong University were enrolled between January 23, 2020 to March 9, 2020. Epidemiological, clinical, laboratory, and radiological characteristics of the children were analyzed. RT-PCR assays were performed to detect the SARS-CoV-2 virus RNA in the respiratory tract and fecal specimens in the follow-up after discharge. Results: Among ten patients, five (50%) were asymptomatic and five (50%) showed mild symptoms of respiratory illness. The average age of asymptomatic children was younger than that of symptomatic children (p = 0.03). The decreases in white blood cell (WBC) (p = 0.03) and lymphocyte (p = 0.03) counts were more severe in symptomatic patients than those in asymptomatic patients. During the follow-up examination after discharge, seven out of ten patients contained SARS-CoV-2 virus RNA in their fecal specimens, despite all patients showed negative results in respiratory tract specimens. One out of those seven patients relapsed. The median time from onset to being negative results in respiratory tract and fecal specimens was 9 days and 34.43 days, respectively. Conclusions: SARS-CoV-2 virus RNA persists much longer in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract than that in respiratory tract.

Abstract As a widely used engineering polymer, epoxy resin has been successfully employed in high-performance components and setups. However, the poor thermal and friction properties of traditional epoxy resin greatly limit its application in many extreme environments. In this work, a new kind of epoxy-Ti3C2 with three-dimensional nanosheets (3DNS) composite which was designed by freeze-drying method showed up excellent thermal and friction properties. As a result, the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of epoxy-Ti3C2 3DNS 3.0 composites was 41.9 ppm/K at 40 °C, which was lower than that of the traditional epoxy resin (46.7 ppm/K), and the thermal conductivity (TC) was also improved from 0.176 to 0.262 W/(m·K). Meanwhile, epoxy-Ti3C2 3DNS 1.0 composites showed up the best friction property, with wear rate 76.3% lower than that of epoxy resin. This work is significant for the research of high-performance composite materials.

A highly thermally conductive heat spreader for applications in electronic devices is becoming increasingly demanding, and therefore the removal of excess heat requires an efficient heat dissipating device. Boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) were prepared as thermally conductive fillers using hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) powder as raw material by a water exfoliation method. A composite film was prepared by vacuum filtration using cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) as the substrate with an in-plane thermal conductivity (TC) of 82.4 W m−1 K−1, thermal conductivity enhancement increasing by 9,486% compared to pure cellulose film. Thus, CNF/BNNS composite films are promising as effective thermal interface materials (TIMs) in electronic devices and electronic component applications.

With the increase in heat power density in modern integrating electronics, thermal interface materials (TIM) that can efficiently fill the gaps between the heat source and heat sinks and enhance heat dissipation are urgently needed owing to their high thermal conductivity and excellent mechanical durability. Among all the emerged TIMs, graphene-based TIMs have attracted increasing attention because of the ultrahigh intrinsic thermal conductivity of graphene nanosheets. Despite extensive efforts, developing high-performance graphene-based papers with high through-plane thermal conductivity remains challenging despite their high in-plane thermal conductivity. In this study, a novel strategy for enhancing the through-plane thermal conductivity of graphene papers by in situ depositing AgNWs on graphene sheets (IGAP) was proposed, which could boost the through-plane thermal conductivity of the graphene paper up to 7.48 W m−1 K−1 under packaging conditions. In the TIM performance test under actual and simulated operating conditions, our IGAP exhibits strongly enhanced heat dissipation performance compared to the commercial thermal pads. We envision that our IGAP as a TIM has great potential for boosting the development of next-generation integrating circuit electronics.

Here, the authors report a nacre-mimetic composite obtained by infiltrating a switchable Diels-Alder network polymer into a scaffold of alumina capable of self-healing internal damage.

Abstract Graphene is usually embedded into polymer matrices for the development of thermally conductive composites, preferably forming an interconnected and anisotropic framework. Currently, the directional self‐assembly of exfoliated graphene sheets is demonstrated to be the most effective way to synthesize anisotropic graphene frameworks. However, achieving a thermal conductivity enhancement (TCE) over 1500% with per 1 vol% graphene content in polymer matrices remains challenging, due to the high junction thermal resistance between the adjacent graphene sheets within the self‐assembled graphene framework. Here, a multiscale structural modulation strategy for obtaining highly ordered structure of graphene framework and simultaneously reducing the junction thermal resistance is demonstrated. The resultant anisotropic framework contributes to the polymer composites with a record‐high thermal conductivity of 56.8–62.4 W m−1 K−1 at the graphene loading of ≈13.3 vol%, giving an ultrahigh TCE per 1 vol% graphene over 2400%. Furthermore, thermal energy management applications of the composites as phase change materials for solar‐thermal energy conversion and as thermal interface materials for electronic device cooling are demonstrated. The finding provides valuable guidance for designing high‐performance thermally conductive composites and raises their possibility for practical use in thermal energy storage and thermal management of electronics.

The rapid identification of sex has potential uses involving dioecious commercial plants. In this work, we first propose a rapid electrochemical analysis method for plant sex determination using the signal difference generated by the electrochemically active substances in plant tissue. Polydopamine-functionalized graphene was wrapped around plant tissue. The introduction of polydopamine-functionalized graphene could solve the problem of the instability of plant tissue immobilization and enhance the electrochemical signals from plant tissue. Taxus × media, Dioscorea zingiberensis, and Dioscorea bulbifera were deliberately selected as dioecious plant models due to their pharmaceutical applications. The sex of the plant was not obvious after simply comparing the electrochemical voltammograms. Scatter patterns and 3D surface patterns were generated based on the voltammograms recorded after different solvent extractions. Sex determination was successfully achieved by pattern recognition.

In this paper, lightweight carbon/carbon fiber composite thermal field insulation materials were fabricated by the process method of long carbon fiber airflow netting-needle punching forming felt-resin impregnation-molding curing-high-temperature carbonization and graphitization. The microscopic morphology, conductivity, bending strength, and thermal conductivity of carbon/carbon fiber composites were measured by using the scanning electron microscope (SEM), four probes, electronic universal testing machine, and thermal analyzer. The results show that the long carbon fiber in the carbon/carbon fiber composite forms a three-dimensional structure of X-Y-Z with a density of 0.16 ± 0.02 g/cm3, which makes the composite material have excellent thermal insulation performance at high temperature, and the conductivity is 1452.4 S/m (plane direction) and 182.8 S/m (perpendicular to the plane direction), the compressive strength is 0.2 MPa (plane direction) and 1.31 MPa (perpendicular to the plane direction), the bending strength is 0.24 MPa (plane direction) and 1.1 MPa (perpendicular to the plane direction), and the thermal conductivity is 0.076 W/(mK) (25°C) and 0.17 W/(mK) (1200°C), respectively. The above process methods and test results will provide the application of the carbon/carbon fiber composite in the solar polysilicon furnace, single crystal silicon furnace, semiconductor furnace, sapphire furnace, fiber drawing furnace, and high-end metallurgical heat treatment furnaces, as well as applications in other high-temperature insulation environments, and also provide some suggestions in these insulation applications.

Abstract The lattice stability and phonon response of Ti3C2T x MXene at high pressure are important for understanding its mechanical and thermal properties fully. Here, we use in situ high hydrostatic pressure X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy to study the lattice deformation and phonon behavior of Ti3C2T x MXene. XRD spectra indicate that no phase transformation occurs up to the pressure of 26.7 GPa. The elastic constant along a lattice parameter was calculated to be 378 GPa. In the Raman spectra obtained at high-pressure, the out-of-plane phonon modes (A 1g at ~ 210, ~ 504, and ~ 711 cm−1) exhibit monotonic blueshifts with increasing pressure. The Grüneisen parameters of these three modes were calculated to be 1.08, 1.16, and 0.29, respectively. These results enrich the basic property data of Ti3C2T x MXene and would benefit the further understanding of this novel material.

The rapid development of chip technology has all put forward higher requirements for highly thermally conductive materials. In this work, a new type of material of Fishbone-like silicon carbide (SiC) material was used as the filler in a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) matrix. The silicon carbide/polyvinylidene fluoride (SiC/PVDF) composites were successfully prepared with different loading by a simple mixing method. The thermal conductivity of SiC/PVDF composite reached 0.92 W m−1 K−1, which is 470% higher than that of pure polymer. The results show that using the filler with a new structure to construct thermal conductivity networks is an effective way to improve the thermal conductivity of PVDF. This work provides a new idea for the further application in the field of electronic packaging.

Abstract In this study, we report a facile approach to fabricate epoxy composite incorporated with silicon carbide nanowires (SiC NWs). The thermal conductivity of epoxy/SiC NWs composites was thoroughly investigated. The thermal conductivity of epoxy/SiC NWs composites with 3.0 wt% filler reached 0.449 Wm−1 K−1, approximately a 106% enhancement as compared to neat epoxy. In contrast, the same mass fraction of silicon carbide micron particles (SiC MPs) incorporated into epoxy matrix showed less improvement on thermal conduction properties. This is attributed to the formation of effective heat conduction pathways among SiC NWs as well as a strong interaction between the nanowires and epoxy matrix. In addition, the thermal properties of epoxy/SiC NWs composites were also improved. These results demonstrate that we developed a novel approach to enhance the thermal conductivity of the polymer composites which meet the requirement for the rapid development of the electronic devices.

Given the thermal management problem aroused by increasing power densities of electronic components in the system, graphene-based papers have raised considerable interest for applications as thermal interface materials (TIMs) to solve interfacial heat transfer issues. Significant research efforts have focused on enhancing the through-plane thermal conductivity of graphene paper; however, for practical thermal management applications, reducing the thermal contact resistance between graphene paper and the mating surface is also a challenge to be addressed. Here, a strategy aimed at reducing the thermal contact resistance between graphene paper and the mating surface to realize enhanced heat dissipation was demonstrated. For this, graphene paper was decorated with polydopamine EGaIn nanocapsules using a facile dip-coating process. In practical TIM application, there was a decrease in the thermal contact resistance between the TIMs and mating surface after decoration (from 46 to 15 K mm2 W−1), which enabled the decorated paper to realize a 26% enhancement of cooling efficiency compared with the case without decoration. This demonstrated that this method is a promising route to enhance the heat dissipation capacity of graphene-based TIMs for practical electronic cooling applications.

Under the circumstances of rapid expansion of diverse forms of volatile and intermittent renewable energy sources, hydropower stations have become increasingly indispensable for improving the quality of energy conversion processes. As a consequence, Francis turbines, one of the most popular options, need to operate under off-design conditions, particularly for partial load operation. In this paper, a prototype Francis turbine was used to investigate the pressure fluctuations and hydraulic axial thrust pulsation under four partial load conditions. The analyses of pressure fluctuations in the vaneless space, runner, and draft tube are discussed in detail. The observed precession frequency of the vortex rope is 0.24 times that of the runner rotational frequency, which is able to travel upstream (from the draft tube to the vaneless space). Frequencies of both 24.0 and 15.0 times that of the runner rotational frequency are detected in the recording points of the runner surface, while the main dominant frequency recorded in the vaneless zone is 15.0 times that of the runner rotational frequency. Apart from unsteady pressure fluctuations, the pulsating property of hydraulic axial thrust is discussed in depth. In conclusion, the pulsation of hydraulic axial thrust is derived from the pressure fluctuations of the runner surface and is more complicated than the pressure fluctuations.

Electronic packaging materials and thermal interface materials (TIMs) are widely used in thermal management. In this study, the epoxy composites with core-shell structure SiC@SiO(2) nanowires (SiC@SiO(2) NWs) as fillers could effectively enhance the thermal conductivity of epoxy composites. The unique structure of fillers results in a high thermal conductivity of epoxy composites, which is attributed to good interfacial compatibility epoxy matrix and bridging connections of SiC@SiO(2) NWs. From neat epoxy to 2.5 wt% loading of SiC@SiO(2) NWs, the thermal conductivity is significantly increased from 0.218 to 0.391 W m^−1 K^−1, increased by 79.4%. In addition, the composite with 2.5 wt% filler possess lower coefficient of thermal expansion and better thermal stability than that of neat epoxy. All these outstanding properties imply that epoxy/SiC@SiO(2) NWs composites could be the ideal candidate for TIM.

It is of great significance to distinguish enantiomers due to their different, even completely opposite biological, physiological and pharmacological activities compared to those with different stereochemistry. A sp3-to-sp2 converted highly stable and regenerative graphene/diamond electrode (G/D) was proposed as an enantiomer recognition platform after a simple β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) drop casting process. The proposed enantiomer recognition sensor has been successfully used for d and l-phenylalanine recognition. In addition, the G/D electrode can be simply regenerated by half-minute sonication due to the strong interfacial bonding between graphene and diamond. Therefore, the proposed G/D electrode showed significant potential as a reusable sensing platform for enantiomer recognition.

Increased CD4+GNLY+ T cells have been confirmed to be inversely associated with CD4+ T cell count in immunological non-responders (INRs), however, the underlying mechanisms are unknown. This study aimed to elucidate the characteristics of CD4+GNLY+ T cells and their relationship with immune restoration. Single-cell RNA sequencing, single-cell TCR sequencing, and flow cytometry were used to analyze the frequency, phenotypes, and function of CD4+GNLY+ T cells. Moreover, Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay was performed to detect plasma cytokines production in patients. CD4+GNLY+ T cells were found to be highly clonally expanded, characterized by higher levels of cytotoxicity, senescence, P24, and HIV-1 DNA than CD4+GNLY− T cells. Additionally, the frequency of CD4+GNLY+ T cells increased after ART, and further increased in INRs, and were positively associated with the antiretroviral therapy duration in INR. Furthermore, increased IL-15 levels in INRs positively correlated with the frequency and senescence of CD4+GNLY+ T cells, suggesting that CD4+GNLY+ T cells may provide new insights for understanding the poor immune reconstitution of INRs. In conclusion, increased, highly clonally expanded, and senescent CD4+GNLY+ T cells may contribute to poor immune reconstitution in HIV-1 infection.

Channel coding plays a pivotal role in ensuring reliable communication over wireless channels. With the growing need for ultra-reliable communication in emerging wireless use cases, the significance of channel coding has amplified. Furthermore, minimizing decoding latency is crucial for critical-mission applications, while optimizing energy efficiency is paramount for mobile and the Internet of Things (IoT) communications. As the fifth generation (5G) of mobile communications is currently in operation and 5G-advanced is on the horizon, the objective of this paper is to assess prominent channel coding schemes in the context of recent advancements and the anticipated requirements for the sixth generation (6G). In this paper, after considering the potential impact of channel coding on key performance indicators (KPIs) of wireless networks, we review the evolution of mobile communication standards and the organizations involved in the standardization, from the first generation (1G) to the current 5G, highlighting the technologies integral to achieving targeted KPIs such as reliability, data rate, latency, energy efficiency, spectral efficiency, connection density, and traffic capacity. Following this, we delve into the anticipated requirements for potential use cases in 6G. The subsequent sections of the paper focus on a comprehensive review of three primary coding schemes utilized in past generations and their recent advancements: low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, turbo codes (including convolutional codes), and polar codes (alongside Reed-Muller codes). Additionally, we examine alternative coding schemes like Fountain codes (also known as rate-less codes), sparse regression codes, among others. Our evaluation includes a comparative analysis of error correction performance and the performance of hardware implementation for these coding schemes, providing insights into their potential and suitability for the upcoming 6G era. Lastly, we will briefly explore considerations such as higher-order modulations and waveform design, examining their contributions to enhancing key performance indicators in conjunction with channel coding schemes.

Abstract Background The bimolecular fluorescence complementation (BiFC) assay is commonly used for investigating protein–protein interactions. While several BiFC detection systems have been developed, there is a limited amount of research focused on using laser scanning confocal microscope (LSCM) techniques to observe protoplasts. Protoplasts are more susceptible to damage and instability compared to their original cell state due to the preparation treatments they undergo, which makes it challenging for researchers to manipulate them during observation under LSCMs. Therefore, it is crucial to utilize microscope techniques properly and efficiently in BiFC assays. Results When the target fluorescence is weak, the autofluorescence of chloroplast particles in protoplasts can interfere with the detection of BiFC signals localized in the nuclear region. Spectrum analysis revealed that chloroplast autofluorescence can be excited by lasers of various types, with the highest fluorescence signal observed at around 660 nm. Furthermore, our investigation into the impact of different pipette tips on the integrity of protoplast samples indicated that the utilization of cut tips with larger openings can mitigate cell breakage. We presented a workflow of LSCM techniques for investigating protoplast BiFC and discussed the microscopic manipulation involved in sample preparation and image capturing. Conclusion When the BiFC signals are weak, they may be affected by chloroplast autofluorescence. However, when used properly, the autofluorescence of chloroplasts can serve as an excellent internal marker for effectively distinguishing other signals. In combination with other findings, this study can provide valuable reference for researchers conducting BiFC assays and related studies.

Water and nitrogen (N) deficiencies are the major limitations to crop production, particularly when they occur simultaneously. By supporting metabolism, even when tissue water capacity is lower, nitrogen and priming may reduce drought pressure on plants. Therefore, the current study investigates the impact of nitrogen and priming on wheat to minimize post-anthesis drought stress. Plant morphology, physiology, and biochemical changes were observed before, during, and after stress at the post-anthesis stage. The plants were exposed to three water levels, i.e., well watering (WW), water deficit (WD), and priming at jointing and water deficit (PJWD) at the post-anthesis stage, and two different nitrogen levels, i.e., N180 (N1) and N300 (N2). Nitrogen was applied in three splits, namely, sowing, jointing, and booting stages. The results showed that the photosynthesis of plants with N1 was significantly reduced under drought stress. Moreover, drought stress affected chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence and water-related parameters (osmotic potential, leaf water potential, and relative water content), grain filling duration (GFD), and grain yield. In contrast, PJWD couple with high nitrogen treatment (N300 kg ha-1) induced the antioxidant activity of peroxidase (37.5%), superoxide dismutase (29.64%), and catalase (65.66%) in flag leaves, whereas the levels of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and superoxide anion radical (O2-) declined by 58.56 and 66.64%, respectively. However, during the drought period, the primed plants under high nitrogen treatment (N300 kg ha-1) maintained higher Chl content, leaf water potential, and lowered lipid peroxidation (61%) (related to higher activities of ascorbate peroxidase and superoxide dismutase). Plants under high nitrogen treatment (N300 kg ha-1) showed deferred senescence, improved GFD, and grain yield. Consequently, the research showed that high nitrogen dose (N300 kg ha-1) played a synergistic role in enhancing the drought tolerance effects of priming under post-anthesis drought stress in wheat. Simultaneous achievement of high thermal transportation performance and superior mechanical properties in the same thermal management composite film is still a great challenge. Herein, hybrid nano and microdiamonds (hDs) were introduced for the first time to cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) and boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) to construct a long-range ordered "sandwiched structure" by vacuum-assisted layer-by-layer self-assembly. Benefiting from the bridging effect of diamond and the long-range ordered structure with a perfect thermally conductive path, the CNF-BNNS-hD composite film exhibits an inplane thermal conductivity of 45.76 W m-1 K-1 and through-plane thermal conductivity of 3.17 W m-1 K-1 at a filler content of 48.2 vol%. Additionally, the diamonds are fixed in the "sandwiched structure" as a support layer, and the BNNSs on both sides of the "sandwiched structure" are used for the slip layers, which significantly enhances the mechanical properties of the composite films, making the CNF-BNNS-hD composite film achieve a tensile strength of 88.6 MPa and an elongation at break of 14.7% as well as excellent insulation performance. In addition, the CNF-BNNS-hD composite film could endure 1500 folds without any fracture, demonstrating the excellent flexibility of the film. Our strategy is very effective for the fabrication of a composite film with high thermal conductivity and robust mechanical properties as well as superior electrical insulation performance. Abstract Background The surge in omicron variants has caused nationwide breakthrough infections in mainland China since the December 2022. In this study, we report the neutralization profiles of serum samples from the patients with breast cancer and the patients with liver cancer who had contracted subvariant breakthrough infections. Methods In this real‐world study, we enrolled 143 COVID‐19‐vaccinated (81 and 62 patients with breast and liver cancers) and 105 unvaccinated patients with cancer (58 and 47 patients with breast and liver cancers) after omicron infection. Anti‐spike receptor binding domain (RBD) IgGs and 50% pseudovirus neutralization titer (pVNT50) for the preceding (wild type), circulating omicron (BA.4‐BA.5, and BF.7), and new subvariants (XBB.1.5) were comprehensively analyzed. Results Patients with liver cancer receiving booster doses had higher levels of anti‐spike RBD IgG against circulating omicron (BA.4‐BA.5, and BF.7) and a novel subvariant (XBB.1.5) compared to patients with breast cancer after breakthrough infection. Additionally, all vaccinated patients produced higher neutralizing antibody titers against circulating omicron (BA.4‐BA.5, and BF.7) compared to unvaccinated patients. However, the unvaccinated patients produced higher neutralizing antibody against XBB.1.5 than vaccinated patients after Omicron infection, with this trend being more pronounced in breast cancer than in liver cancer patients. Moreover, we found that there was no correlation between anti‐spike RBD IgG against wildtype virus and the neutralizing antibody titer, but a positive correlation between anti‐spike RBD IgG and the neutralizing antibody against XBB.1.5 was found in unvaccinated patients. Conclusion Our study found that there may be differences in vaccine response and protective effect against COVID‐19 infection in patients with liver and breast cancer. Therefore, we recommend that COVID‐19 vaccine strategies should be optimized based on vaccine components and immunology profiles of different patients with cancer.

Abstract Background The gut is an important site for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and immune responses. The role of gut mucosal immune cells in immune restoration in patients infected with HIV undergoing antiretroviral therapy remains unclear. Methods Ileocytes, including 54 475 immune cells, were obtained from colonoscopic biopsies of five HIV‐negative controls, nine immunological responders (IRs), and three immunological non‐responders (INRs) and were analyzed using single‐cell RNA sequencing. Immunohistochemical assays were performed for validation. The 16S rRNA gene was amplified using PCR in faecal samples to analyze faecal microbiota. Flow cytometry was used to analyze CD4+ T‐cell counts and the activation of T cells. Results This study presents a global transcriptomic profile of the gut mucosal immune cells in patients infected with HIV. Compared with the IRs, the INRs exhibited a lower proportion of gut plasma cells, especially the IGKC+IgA+ plasma cell subpopulation. IGKC+IgA+ plasma cells were negatively associated with enriched f. Prevotellaceae the INRs and negatively correlated with the overactivation of T cells, but they were positively correlated with CD4+ T‐cell counts. The INRs exhibited a higher proportion of B cells than the IRs. Follicular and memory B cells were significantly higher in the INRs. Reduced potential was observed in the differentiation of follicular or memory B cells into gut plasma cells in INRs. In addition, the receptor‐ligand pairs CD74_MIF and CD74_COPA of memory B/ follicular helper T cells were significantly reduced in the INRs, which may hinder the differentiation of memory and follicular B cells into plasma cells. Conclusions Our study shows that plasma cells are dysregulated in INRs and provides an extensive resource for deciphering the immune pathogenesis of HIV in INRs. Key points An investigation was carried out at the single‐cell‐level to analyze gut mucosal immune cells alterations in PLWH after ART. B cells were significantly increased and plasma cells were significantly decreased in the INRs compared to the IRs and NCs. There are gaps in the transition from gut follicular or memory B cellsinto plasma cells in INRs.

Beam hopping (BH) technology is one of effective ways to solve limitation of beam resources and enhance the system coverage ability of low earth orbit (LEO) satellite systems.Existing research typically considers beam hopping resource allocation for a single LEO satellite, however, the actual LEO system is covered by multiple satellites in multiple orbits, and existing research ignores beam interference between satellites, which can easily lead to a decrease in system throughput and service quality.To address these issues, this paper designs an interference aware cooperative resource allocation for LEO with beam hopping (IARA-BH), aiming to maximize the beam service satisfaction (BSS).A BH resource allocation scheme by multi satellite interference coordination based on simulated annealing algorithm (MSIC-SAA) is proposed to solve the optimization problem.Simulation experiments show that compared to beam hopping resource allocation schemes that only consider a single satellite, the BSS of the MSIC-SAA algorithm has been improved by 47.24%, the average signal to interference noise ratio (SINR) has been improved by 27.40%, and the system throughput has been improved by 22.92%.

Terahertz (THz) communications with a frequency band 0.1 – 10 THz are envisioned as a promising solution to future high-speed wireless communication. Although with tens of gigahertz available bandwidth, THz signals suffer from severe free-spreading loss and molecular-absorption loss, which limit the wireless transmission distance. To compensate for the propagation loss, the ultra-massive multiple-input-multiple-output (UM-MIMO) can be applied to generate a high-gain directional beam by beamforming technologies. In this paper, a review of beamforming technologies for THz UM-MIMO systems is provided. Specifically, we first present the system model of THz UM-MIMO and identify its channel parameters and architecture types. Then, we illustrate the basic principles of beamforming via UM-MIMO and discuss the far-field and near-field assumptions in THz UM-MIMO. Moreover, an important beamforming strategy in THz band, i.e., beam training, is introduced wherein the beam training protocol and codebook design approaches are summarized. The intelligent-reflecting-surface (IRS)-assisted joint beamforming and multi-user beamforming in THz UM-MIMO systems are studied, respectively. The spatial-wideband effect and frequency-wideband effect in the THz beamforming are analyzed and the corresponding solutions are provided. Further, we present the corresponding fabrication techniques and illuminate the emerging applications benefiting from THz beamforming. Open challenges and future research directions on THz UM-MIMO systems are finally highlighted.
