High yield in rice mainly depends on large grain weight, ideal plant architecture and proper flowering time adapting to various geographic regions. To help achieve higher yield, phenotype variations of heading date (HD), plant architecture and grain shape in a panel of 416 rice accessions were investigated in this study. A total of 143 markers including 100 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers and 43 gene-tagged markers were employed in association mapping to detect quantitative trait loci (QTL) responsible for these variations. Among the 7 subpopulations, POP5 in japonica group showed the largest values of HD and grain width (GW), but the smallest values of grain length (GL) and grain length to width ratio (GLW). Among the six indica groups, POP7 had the largest values of HD, GL, GLW, and 1 000-grain weight (TGW). A total of 27 QTLs were detected underlying these phenotypic variations in single year, while 12 of them could be detected in 2006 and 2007. GS3 marker was closely associated with GL, GW and GLW, and widely distributed in different groups. The starch synthesis related gene markers, SSI, SSIIa, SBE1, AGPL4, and ISA1, were linked to plant height (PH), panicle length (PL), flag leaf length (FLL), GW, and GLW. The SSR markers, RM267, RM340 and RM346, were linked to at least two traits. Therefore, these new markers will probably be used to improve rice grain yield or plant architecture when performing marker-assisted selection of proper alleles.

Lunar rover development involves a large amount of validation works in realistic operational conditions, including its mechanical subsystem and on-board software. Real tests require equipped rover platform and a realistic terrain. It is very time consuming and high cost. To improve the development efficiency, a rover simulation environment called RSVE that affords real time capabilities with high fidelity has been developed. It uses fractional Brown motion (fBm) technique and statistical properties to generate lunar surface. Thus, various terrain models for simulation can be generated through changing several parameters. To simulate lunar rover evolving on natural and unstructured surface with high realism, the whole dynamics of the multi-body systems and complex interactions with soft ground is integrated in this environment. An example for path planning algorithm and controlling algorithm testing in this environment is tested. This simulation environment runs on PC or Silicon Graphics.

Phospholipids are a major kind of lipids in rice grains and have fundamental nutritional and functional benefits to the plant. Their lyso forms (lysophospholipids, LPLs) often form inclusion complexes with amylose or independently influence the physicochemical and functional properties of rice starch. However, the genetic basis for LPL synthesis in rice endosperm is largely unknown. Here, we performed a preliminary association test of 13 LPL compositions among 20 rice accessions, and identified 22 putative main-effect quantitative trait loci responsible for all LPLs except for LPC14:0 and LPE14:0. Five derived cleaved amplified polymorphic sequences and one insertion/deletion marker for three LPL-synthesis-related candidate genes were developed. Association analysis revealed two markers significantly associated with starch LPL traits. These results provide an insight into the genetic basis of phospholipid biosynthesis in rice and may contribute to the rice quality breeding programs using functional markers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Understanding carbon partitioning in cereal seeds is of critical importance to develop cereal crops with enhanced starch yields for food security and for producing specified end-products high in amylose, β-glucan, or fructan, such as functional foods or oils for biofuel applications. Waxy mutants of cereals have a high content of amylopectin and have been well characterized. However, the allocation of carbon to other components, such as β-glucan and oils, and the regulation of the altered carbon distribution to amylopectin in a waxy mutant are poorly understood. In this study, we used a rice mutant, GM077, with a low content of amylose to gain molecular insight into how a deficiency of amylose affects carbon allocation to other end products and to amylopectin. We used carbohydrate analysis, subtractive cDNA libraries, and qPCR to identify candidate genes potentially responsible for the changes in carbon allocation in GM077 seeds. Results: Carbohydrate analysis indicated that the content of amylose in GM077 seeds was significantly reduced, while that of amylopectin significantly rose as compared to the wild type BP034. The content of glucose, sucrose total starch, cell-wall polysaccharides and oil were only slightly affected in the mutant as compared to the wild type. Suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) experiments generated 116 unigenes in the mutant on the wild-type background. Among the 116 unigenes, three, AGP, ISA1 and SUSIBA2-like, were found to be directly involved in amylopectin synthesis, indicating their possible roles in redirecting carbon flux from amylose to amylopectin. A bioinformatics analysis of the putative SUSIBA2-like binding elements in the promoter regions of the upregulated genes indicated that the SUSIBA2-like transcription factor may be instrumental in promoting the carbon reallocation from amylose to amylopectin. Conclusion: Analyses of carbohydrate and oil fractions and gene expression profiling on a global scale in the rice waxy mutant GM077 revealed several candidate genes implicated in the carbon reallocation response to an amylose deficiency, including genes encoding AGPase and SUSIBA2-like. We believe that AGP and SUSIBA2 are two promising targets for classical breeding and/or transgenic plant improvement to control the carbon flux between starch and other components in cereal seeds. Two-sided (left- and right-side) assembly lines are often used in assembly of large-sized products, such as buses and trucks. A large number of exact algorithms and heuristics have been proposed to balance the well-known classical one-sided assembly lines. However, little attention has been paid to balancing the two-sided lines. Moreover, according to our best knowledge, there is no published work in balancing the two-sided assembly line exactly. In this study, a branch-and-bound algorithm is proposed to solve the balancing problem optimally.
