Understanding the explosion mechanism and hydrodynamic evolution of core-collapse supernovae (SNe) is a long-standing quest in astronomy. The asymmetries caused by the explosion are encoded into the line profiles which appear in the nebular phase of the SN evolution – with particularly clean imprints in He star explosions. Here, we carry out nine different supernova simulations of He-core progenitors, exploding them in 3D with parametrically varied neutrino luminosities using the prometheus-hotb code, hydrodynamically evolving the models to the homologous phase. We then compute nebular phase spectra with the 3D Non-Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium spectral synthesis code extrass (EXplosive TRAnsient Spectral Simulator). We study how line widths and shifts depend on progenitor mass, explosion energy, and viewing angle. We compare the predicted line profile properties against a large set of Type Ib observations, and discuss the degree to which current neutrino-driven explosions can match observationally inferred asymmetries. With self-consistent 3D modelling – circumventing the difficulties of representing |$^{56}$| Ni mixing and clumping accurately in 1D models – we find that neither low-mass He cores exploding with high energies nor high-mass cores exploding with low energies contribute to the Type Ib SN population. Models which have line profile widths in agreement with this population give sufficiently large centroid shifts for calcium emission lines. Calcium is more strongly affected by explosion asymmetries connected to the neutron star kicks than oxygen and magnesium. Lastly, we turn to the near-infrared spectra from our models to investigate the potential of using this regime to look for the presence of He in the nebular phase. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present EXplosive TRAnsient Spectral Simulator (extrass), a newly developed code aimed at generating 3D spectra for supernovae in the nebular phase by using modern multidimensional explosion models as input. It is well established that supernovae are asymmetric by nature, and that the morphology is encoded in the line profiles during the nebular phase, months after the explosion. In this work, we use extrass to study one such simulation of a |$3.3\, \mathrm{ M}_\odot$| He-core explosion (⁠|$M_\text{ejecta}=1.3\, M_\odot$|⁠ , |$E_\text{kin}=1.05\times 10^{51}\,$| erg) modelled with the Prometheus-HotB code and evolved to the homologous phase. Our code calculates the energy deposition from the radioactive decay of 56Ni → 56Co → 56Fe and uses this to determine the Non-Local-Thermodynamic-Equilibrium temperature, excitation, and ionization structure across the nebula. From the physical condition solutions we generate the emissivities to construct spectra depending on viewing angles. Our results show large variations in the line profiles with viewing angles, as diagnosed by the first three moments of the line profiles; shifts, widths, and skewness. We compare line profiles from different elements, and study the morphology of line-of-sight slices that determine the flux at each part of a line profile. We find that excitation conditions can sometimes make the momentum vector of the ejecta emitting in the excited states significantly different from that of the bulk of the ejecta of the respective element, thus giving blueshifted lines for bulk receding material, and vice versa. Thermal bombs are a widely used method to artificially trigger explosions of core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) to determine their nucleosynthesis or ejecta and remnant properties. Recently, their use in spherically symmetric (1D) hydrodynamic simulations led to the result that 56,57Ni and 44Ti are massively underproduced compared to observational estimates for Supernova 1987A, if the explosions are slow, i.e. if the explosion mechanism of CCSNe releases the explosion energy on long time-scales. It was concluded that rapid explosions are required to match observed abundances, i.e. the explosion mechanism must provide the CCSN energy nearly instantaneously on time-scales of some ten to order 100 ms. This result, if valid, would disfavour the neutrino-heating mechanism, which releases the CCSN energy on time-scales of seconds. Here, we demonstrate by 1D hydrodynamic simulations and nucleosynthetic post-processing that these conclusions are a consequence of disregarding the initial collapse of the stellar core in the thermal-bomb modelling before the bomb releases the explosion energy. We demonstrate that the anticorrelation of 56Ni yield and energy-injection time-scale vanishes when the initial collapse is included and that it can even be reversed, i.e. more 56Ni is made by slower explosions, when the collapse proceeds to small radii similar to those where neutrino heating takes place in CCSNe. We also show that the 56Ni production in thermal-bomb explosions is sensitive to the chosen mass cut and that a fixed mass layer or fixed volume for the energy deposition cause only secondary differences. The rapid neutron-capture process, or r-process, is known to be of fundamental importance for explaining the origin of approximately half of the A > 60 stable nuclei observed in nature. Recently, special attention has been paid to neutron star (NS) mergers following the confirmation by hydrodynamic simulations that a non-negligible amount of matter can be ejected and by nucleosynthesis calculations combined with the predicted astrophysical event rate that such a site can account for the majority of r-material in our Galaxy. We show here that the combined contribution of both the dynamical (prompt) ejecta expelled during binary NS or NS-black hole (BH) mergers and the neutrino and viscously driven outflows generated during the post-merger remnant evolution of relic BH-torus systems can lead to the production of r-process elements from mass number A ≳ 90 up to actinides. The corresponding abundance distribution is found to reproduce the solar distribution extremely well. It can also account for the elemental distributions observed in low-metallicity stars. However, major uncertainties still affect our understanding of the composition of the ejected matter. These concern (i) the β-interactions of electron (anti)neutrinos with free neutrons and protons, as well as their inverse reactions, which may affect the neutron-richness of the matter at the early phase of the ejection, and (ii) the nuclear physics of exotic neutron-rich nuclei, including nuclear structure as well as nuclear interaction properties, which impact the calculated abundance distribution. Both aspects are discussed in the light of recent hydrodynamical simulations of NS mergers and microscopic calculations of nuclear decay and reaction probabilities.

SN 2020cxd is a representative of the family of low-energy, underluminous Type IIP supernovae (SNe), whose observations and analysis were recently reported by Yang et al. (2021). Here, we re-evaluate the observational data for the diagnostic SN properties by employing the hydrodynamic explosion model of a 9 M⊙ red supergiant progenitor with an iron core and a pre-collapse mass of 8.75 M⊙. The explosion of the star was obtained by the neutrino-driven mechanism in a fully self-consistent simulation in three dimensions (3D). Multiband light curves and photospheric velocities for the plateau phase are computed with the one-dimensional radiation-hydrodynamics code STELLA , applied to the spherically averaged 3D explosion model as well as sphericized radial profiles in different directions of the 3D model. We find that the overall evolution of the bolometric light curve, duration of the plateau phase, and basic properties of the multiband emission can be well reproduced by our SN model with its explosion energy of only 0.7 × 1050 erg and an ejecta mass of 7.4 M⊙. These values are considerably lower than the previously reported numbers, but they are compatible with those needed to explain the fundamental observational properties of the prototype low-luminosity SN 2005cs. Because of the good compatibility of our photospheric velocities with line velocities determined for SN 2005cs, we conclude that the line velocities of SN 2020cxd are probably overestimated by up to a factor of about 3. The evolution of the line velocities of SN 2005cs compared to photospheric velocities in different explosion directions might point to intrinsic asymmetries in the SN ejecta. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Stars in the mass range from 8 M⊙ to 10 M⊙ are expected to produce one of two types of supernovae (SNe), either electron-capture supernovae (ECSNe) or core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe), depending on their previous evolution. Either of the associated progenitors retain extended and massive hydrogen-rich envelopes and the observables of these SNe are, therefore, expected to be similar. In this study, we explore the differences in these two types of SNe. Specifically, we investigate three different progenitor models: a solar-metallicity ECSN progenitor with an initial mass of 8.8 M⊙, a zero-metallicity progenitor with 9.6 M⊙, and a solar-metallicity progenitor with 9 M⊙, carrying out radiative transfer simulations for these progenitors. We present the resulting light curves for these models. The models exhibit very low photospheric velocity variations of about 2000 km s−1; therefore, this may serve as a convenient indicator of low-mass SNe. The ECSN has very unique light curves in broad-bands, especially the U band, and does not resemble any currently observed SN. This ECSN progenitor being part of a binary will lose its envelope for which reason the light curve becomes short and undetectable. The SN from the 9.6 M⊙ progenitor exhibits also quite an unusual light curve, explained by the absence of metals in the initial composition. The artificially iron-polluted 9.6 M⊙ model demonstrates light curves closer to normal SNe IIP. The SN from the 9 M⊙ progenitor remains the best candidate for so-called low-luminosity SNe IIP like SN 1999br and SN 2005cs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present 3D hydrodynamic simulations of neutrino-driven supernovae (SNe) with the Prometheus-HotB code, evolving the asymmetrically expanding ejecta from shock breakout until they reach the homologous expansion phase after roughly one year. Our calculations continue the simulations for two red supergiant and two blue supergiant progenitors by Wongwathanarat et al. who investigated the growth of explosion asymmetries produced by hydrodynamic instabilities during the first second of the explosion and their later fragmentation by Rayleigh–Taylor instabilities. We focus on the late time acceleration and inflation of the ejecta caused by the heating due to the radioactive decay of 56Ni to 56Fe and by a new outward-moving shock, which forms when the reverse shock from the He/H-shell interface compresses the central part of the ejecta. The mean velocities of the iron-rich ejecta increase between 100 and 350 km s−1 (∼8–30 per cent), and the fastest 1 per cent of the iron accelerates by up to ∼1000 km s−1 (∼20–25 per cent). This 'Ni-bubble effect', known from 1D models, accelerates the bulk of the nickel in our 3D models and causes an inflation of the initially overdense Ni-rich clumps, which leads to underdense, extended fingers, enveloped by overdense skins of compressed surrounding matter. We also provide volume and surface filling factors as well as a spherical harmonics analysis to characterize the spectrum of Ni-clump sizes quantitatively. We present a constraint on neutron star radii, which is derived from a multi-messenger interpretation of GW170817, the first unambiguously detected neutron star merger event. The optical and infrared emission of the electromagnetic counterpart was relatively bright compared to simulation results. We argue that theremnant of the merger did not undergo a prompt collapse to a black hole because this results in relatively dim electromagnetic transients. If this interpretation is correct, neutron star radii cannot be too small to prevent direct collapse. We find that the radius of a nonrotating neutron star with a mass of 1.6 M(...) should be larger than about 10.7 km excluding very soft nuclear matter. We emphasize the potential of future multi-messenger observations to which the same arguments and procedures can be applied, and which can then yield more stringent radius limits. We study the impact of large-scale perturbations from convective shell burning on the corecollapse supernova explosion mechanism using 3D multigroup neutrino hydrodynamics simulations of an 18M⊙ progenitor. Seed asphericities in the O shell, obtained from a recent 3D model of O shell burning, help trigger a neutrino-driven explosion 330 ms after bounce whereas the shock is not revived in a model based on a spherically symmetric progenitor for at least another 300 ms. We tentatively infer a reduction of the critical luminosity for shock revival by ∼20 per cent due to pre-collapse perturbations. This indicates that convective seed perturbations play an important role in the explosion mechanism in some progenitors. We follow the evolution of the 18M⊙ model into the explosion phase for more than 2 s and find that the cycle of accretion and mass ejection is still ongoing at this stage. With a preliminary value of 7.7 × 1050 erg for the diagnostic explosion energy, a baryonic neutron star mass of 1.85M☉, a neutron star kick of ∼600 km s-1 and a neutron star spin period of ∼20 ms at the end of the simulation, the explosion and remnant properties are slightly atypical, but still lie comfortably within the observed distribution. Although more refined simulations and a larger survey of progenitors are still called for, this suggests that a solution to the problem of shock revival and explosion energies in the ballpark of observations is within reach for neutrino-driven explosions in 3D. The merger of two neutron stars may give birth to a long-lived hypermassive neutron star. If it harbours a strong magnetic field of magnetar strength, its spin-down could explain several features of short gamma-ray burst afterglows. The magnetorotational instability (MRI) has been proposed as a mechanism to amplify the magnetic field to the required strength. Previous studies have, however, neglected neutrinos that may have an important impact on the MRI by inducing a viscosity and drag. We investigate the impact of these neutrinos effects on the linear growth of the MRI by applying a local stability analysis to snapshots of a neutron star merger simulation. We find that neutrinos have a significant impact inside the hypermassive neutron star, but have at most a marginal effect in the torus surrounding it. Inside the hypermassive neutron star, the MRI grows in different regimes depending on the radius and on the initial magnetic-field strength. For magnetic fields weaker than 1013-1014 G, the growth rate of the MRI is significantly reduced due to the presence of neutrinos. We conclude that neutrinos should be taken into account when studying the growth of the MRI from realistic initial magnetic fields. Current numerical simulations, which neglect neutrino viscosity, are only consistent, i.e. in the adopted ideal regime, if they start from artificially strong initial magnetic fields above ~1014 G. One should be careful when extrapolating these results to lower initial magnetic fields, where the MRI growth is strongly affected by neutrino viscosity or drag. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Neutron-star mergers are closely related to nuclear physics. The nuclear equation of state determines the properties of neutron-star matter and sensitively affects the dynamics of the merger. Consequently, the gravitational-wave signal carries a strong imprint of the equation of state. This, in turn, offers the possibilities to infer incompletely known properties of high-density matter from observations of gravitational waves emitted by the neutron-star mergers. For instance, the frequency of the dominant postmerger oscillation mode is strongly affected by the stiffness of nuclear matter. Furthermore, unbound matter from the neutron-star mergers provides generally favorable conditions for the formation of heavy elements through the rapid neutron-capture process. The element formation is investigated by nuclear network calculations. The amounts of ejecta are influenced by the high-density equation of state, which also implies an impact on the properties of nuclear powered electromagnetic counterparts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Extremely strong magnetic fields of the order of 1015G are required to explain the properties of magnetars, the most magnetic neutron stars. Such a strong magnetic field is expected to play an important role for the dynamics of core-collapse supernovae, and in the presence of rapid rotation may power superluminous supernovae and hypernovae associated to long gamma-ray bursts. The origin of these strong magnetic fields remains, however, obscure and most likely requires an amplification over many orders of magnitude in the protoneutron star. One of the most promising agents is the magnetorotational instability (MRI), which can in principle amplify exponentially fast a weak initial magnetic field to a dynamically relevant strength. We describe our current understanding of the MRI in protoneutron stars and show recent results on its dependence on physical conditions specific to protoneutron stars such as neutrino radiation, strong buoyancy effects and large magnetic Prandtl number. Recently, first neutrino-driven supernova explosions have been obtained in 3D, self-consistent, first-principle simulations, these models are still not always exploding robustly and, in general, the explosions are not sufficiently energetic. To constrain the explosion mechanism, and the related uncertainties, it is thus very helpful to consider observational constraints: pulsar kicks, progenitor association and supernova remnants (SNR). Recent observations of asymmetries in the supernova ejecta of Cas A are very promising, to compare to long-term simulations of the explosion. In addition 3D observations of SN87A are becoming more constraining on the geometry of the ejected material during the explosion. In this talk I will discuss our efforts to model the late time evolution of a 3D supernova explosion, where we include the effects of beta decay, which inflates the structures rich in 56Ni. Fostered by the possibilities of multi-dimensional computational modeling, in particular the advent of three-dimensional (3D) simulations, our understanding of the neutrino-driven explosion mechanism of core-collapse supernovae (SNe) has experienced remarkable progress over the past decade. First self-consistent, first-principle models have shown successful explosions in 3D, and even failed cases may be cured by moderate changes of the microphysics inside the neutron star (NS), better grid resolution, or more detailed progenitor conditions at the onset of core collapse, in particular large-scale perturbations in the convective Si and O burning shells. 3D simulations have also achieved to follow neutrino-driven explosions continuously from the initiation of the blast wave, through the shock breakout from the progenitor surface, into the radioactively powered evolution of the SN, and towards the free expansion phase of the emerging remnant. Here we present results from such simulations, which form the basis for direct comparisons with observations of SNe and SN remnants in order to derive constraints on the still disputed explosion mechanism. It is shown that predictions based on hydrodynamic instabilities and mixing processes associated with neutrino-driven explosions yield good agreement with measured NS kicks, light-curve properties of SN 1987A and asymmetries of iron and 44Ti distributions observed in SN 1987A and Cassiopeia A. Nonspherical mass motions are a generic feature of core-collapse supernovae, and hydrodynamic instabilities play a crucial role in the explosion mechanism. The first successful neutrino-driven explosions could be obtained with self-consistent, first-principles simulations in three spatial dimensions. But three-dimensional (3D) models tend to be less prone to explosion than the corresponding axisymmetric two-dimensional (2D) ones. The reason is that 3D turbulence leads to energy cascading from large to small spatial scales, the inverse of the 2D case, thus disfavoring the growth of buoyant plumes on the largest scales. Unless the inertia to explode simply reflects a lack of sufficient resolution in relevant regions, some important component of robust and sufficiently energetic neutrino-powered explosions may still be missing. Such a deficit could be associated with progenitor properties such as rotation, magnetic fields, or precollapse perturbations, or with microphysics that could cause enhancement of neutrino heating behind the shock. 3D simulations have also revealed new phenomena that are not present in 2D ones, such as spiral modes of the standing accretion shock instability (SASI) and a stunning dipolar lepton-number emission self-sustained asymmetry (LESA). The magnetorotational instability (MRI) is a promising mechanism to amplify the magnetic field in fast rotating protoneutron stars (PNS). The diffusion of neutrinos trapped in the PNS induces a transport of momentum, which can be modelled as a viscosity on length-scales longer than the neutrino mean free path. This neutrino-viscosity can slow down the growth of MRI modes to such an extent that a minimum initial magnetic field strength of ≳1012 G is needed for the MRI to grow on a sufficiently short time-scale to potentially affect the explosion. It is uncertain whether the magnetic field of fast rotating progenitor cores is strong enough to yield such an initial magnetic field in PNS. At MRI wavelengths shorter than the neutrino mean free path, on the other hand, neutrino radiation does not act as a viscosity but rather induces a drag on the velocity with a damping rate independent of the wavelength. We perform a linear analysis of the MRI in this regime, and apply our analytical results to the PNS structure from a one-dimensional numerical simulation. We show that in the outer layers of the PNS, the MRI can grow from weak magnetic fields at wavelengths shorter than the neutrino mean free path, while deeper in the PNS MRI growth takes place in the viscous regime and requires a minimum magnetic field strength. Supernova theory, numerical and analytic, has made remarkable progress in the past decade. This progress was made possible by more sophisticated simulation tools, especially for neutrino transport, improved microphysics, and deeper insights into the role of hydrodynamic instabilities. Violent, large-scale nonradial mass motions are generic in supernova cores. The neutrino-heating mechanism, aided by nonradial flows, drives explosions, albeit low-energy ones, of O-Ne-Mg-core and some Fe-core progenitors. The characteristics of the neutrino emission from newborn neutron stars were revised, new features of the gravitational-wave signals were discovered, our notion of supernova nucleosynthesis was shattered, and our understanding of pulsar kicks and explosion asymmetries was significantly improved. But simulations also suggest that neutrino-powered explosions might not explain the most energetic supernovae and hypernovae, which seem to demand magnetorotational driving. Now that modeling is being advanced from two to three dimensions, more realism, new perspectives, and hopefully answers to long-standing questions are coming into reach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT We study the excitation of non-axisymmetric modes in the post-merger phase of binary compact object mergers and the associated gravitational wave emission. Our analysis is based on general-relativistic simulations, in the spatial conformal flatness approximation, using smoothed particle hydrodynamics for the evolution of matter, and we use a set of equal- and unequal-mass models, described by two non-zero-temperature hadronic equations of state and by one strange star equation of state. Through Fourier transforms of the evolution of matter variables, we can identify a number of oscillation modes, as well as several non-linear components (combination frequencies). We focus on the dominant m= 2 mode, which forms a triplet with two non-linear components that are the result of coupling to the quasi-radial mode. A corresponding triplet of frequencies is identified in the gravitational wave spectrum, when the individual masses of the compact objects are in the most likely range of 1.2-1.35 M⊙. We can thus associate, through direct analysis of the dynamics of the fluid, a specific frequency peak in the gravitational wave spectrum with the non-linear component resulting from the difference between the m= 2 mode and the quasi-radial mode. Once such observation becomes available, both the m= 2 and quasi-radial mode frequencies could be extracted, allowing for the application of gravitational wave asteroseismology to the post-merger remnant and leading to tight constraints on the equation of state of high-density matter. We perform a set of neutrino-driven core-collapse supernova (CCSN) simulations studying the hydrodynamical neutron star kick mechanism in three-dimensions. Our simulations produce neutron star (NS) kick velocities in a range between ~100-600 km/s resulting mainly from the anisotropic gravitational tug by the asymmetric mass distribution behind the supernova shock. This stochastic kick mechanism suggests that a NS kick velocity of more than 1000 km/s may as well be possible. An enhanced production of heavy elements in the direction roughly opposite to the NS recoil direction is also observed as a result of the asymmetric explosion. We present the first successful simulations of neutrino-driven supernova explosions in three dimensions (3D) using the Vertex-Prometheus code including sophisticated energy-dependent neutrino transport. The simulated models of 9.6 and 20 solar-mass iron-core stars demonstrate that successful explosions can be obtained in self-consistent 3D simulations, where previous models have failed. New insights into the supernova mechanism can be gained from these explosions. The first 3D model (Melson et al. 2015a) explodes at the same time but more energetically than its axially symmetric (2D) counterpart. Turbulent energy cascading reduces the kinetic energy dissipation in the cooling layer and therefore suppresses neutrino cooling. The consequent inward shift of the gain radius increases the gain layer mass, whose recombination energy provides the surplus for the explosion energy. The second explosion (Melson et al. 2015b) is obtained through a moderate reduction of the neutral-current neutrino opacity motivated by strange-quark contributions to the nucleon spin. A corresponding reference model without these corrections failed, which demonstrates how close current 3D models are to explosion. Multidimensional effects are essential for the success of the neutrino-driven explosion mechanism of core-collapse supernovae. Although astrophysical phenomena in nature involve three spatial dimensions, the huge computational demands still allow only for a few self-consistent, three-dimensional (3D) simulations focusing on specific aspects of the explosion physics, whereas systematic studies of larger sets of progenitor models or detailed investigations of different explosion parameters are restricted to the axisymmetric (2D) modeling approach at the moment. Employing state-of-the-art neutrino physics, we present the results of self-consistent core-collapse supernova simulations performed with the Prometheus-Vertex code in 2D and 3D. The 2D study of 18 successfully exploding pre-supernova models in the range of 11 to 28 solar masses shows the progenitor dependence of the explosion dynamics: if the progenitor exhibits a pronounced decline of the density at the Si/Si-O composition shell interface, the rapid drop of the mass-accretion rate at the time the interface arrives at the shock induces a steep reduction of the accretion ram pressure. This causes a strong shock expansion supported by neutrino heating and thus favors an early explosion. In case of a more gradually decreasing accretion rate, it takes longer for the neutrino heating to overcome the accretion ram pressure and explosions set in later. By considering the effects of turbulent pressure in the gain layer, we derive a generalized condition for the critical neutrino luminosity that captures the explosion behavior of all models very well. We show that this concept can also be extended to describe the effects of rotation as well as the behavior of recent 3D simulations and that the conditions necessary for the onset of explosion can be defined in a similar way. We have performed r-process calculations for matter ejected dynamically in neutron star mergers based on a complete set of trajectories from a three-dimensional relativistic smoothed particle hydrodynamic simulation with a total ejected mass of ~1.7 x 10-3M⊙. Our calculations consider an extended nuclear network, including spontaneous, β- and neutron-induced fission and adopting fission yield distributions from the ABLA code. In particular we have studied the sensitivity of the r-process abundances to nuclear masses by using different models. Most of the trajectories, corresponding to 90% of the ejected mass, follow a relatively slow expansion allowing for all neutrons to be captured. The resulting abundances are very similar to each other and reproduce the general features of the observed r-process abundance (the second and third peaks, the rare-earth peak, and the lead peak) for all mass models as they are mainly determined by the fission yields. We find distinct differences in the predictions of the mass models at and just above the third peak, which can be traced back to different predictions of neutron separation energies for r-process nuclei around neutron number N = 130. In all simulations, we find that the second peak around A ~ 130 is produced by the fission yields of the material that piles up in nuclei with A ≳ 250 due to the substantially longer β-decay half-lives found in this region. The third peak around A ~ 195 is generated in a competition between neutron captures and β decays during r-process freeze-out. The remaining trajectories, which contribute 10% by mass to the total integrated abundances, follow such a fast expansion that the r process does not use all the neutrons. This also leads to a larger variation of abundances among trajectories, as fission does not dominate the r-process dynamics. The resulting abundances are in between those associated to the r and s processes. The total integrated abundances are dominated by contributions from the slow abundances and hence reproduce the general features of the observed r-process abundances. We find that, at timescales of weeks relevant for kilonova light curve calculations, the abundance of actinides is larger than the one of lanthanides. This means that actinides can be even more important than lanthanides to determine the photon opacities under kilonova conditions. Moreover, we confirm that the amount of unused neutrons may be large enough to give rise to another observational signature powered by their decay. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
