1. Me, My Brain, and I: A Framework for Neuroscience Curriculum Fostering Research-Practice Partnership between Scientists and Educators

Abstract

Students' school requirements and learning activities engage many different cognitive processes, including language processing, memory, learning, attention, reasoning, decision-making, and social interaction. However, students rarely learn about these cognitive processes, or the brain mechanisms underlying them and therefore lack the critical understanding of how they operate. Here, we describe a novel neuroscience curriculum, developed through a research-practice partnership (RPP) between neuroscientists and educators, aimed at providing students with the opportunity to learn about their own brain and cognitive abilities and engage in authentic neuroscientific inquiry. The curriculum is organized around three pillars: Learn Neuroscience-Experience Neuroscience-Contribute to Neuroscience. These are designed to optimize relevance, student engagement, and interactive hands-on experience. In particular, by incorporating genuine neuroscientific research as part of the program, students are offered a front-row seat to the scientific process using cutting-edge neurotechnology and gain firsthand experience with the challenges and excitements of scientific inquiry.

2. Role of Delay in Brain Dynamics

Abstract

Significant variations of delays among connecting neurons cause an inevitable disadvantage of asynchronous brain dynamics compared to synchronous deep learning. However, this study demonstrates that this disadvantage can be converted into a computational advantage using a network with a single output and M multiple delays between successive layers, thereby generating a polynomial time-series outputs with M. The proposed role of delay in brain dynamics (RoDiB) model, is capable of learning increasing number of classified labels using a fixed architecture, and overcomes the inflexibility of the brain to update the learning architecture using additional neurons and connections. Moreover, the achievable accuracies of the RoDiB system are comparable with those of its counterpart tunable single delay architectures with M outputs. Further, the accuracies are significantly enhanced when the number of output labels exceeds its fully connected input size. The results are mainly obtained using simulations of VGG-6 on CIFAR datasets and also include multiple label inputs. However, currently only a small fraction of the abundant number of RoDiB outputs is utilized, thereby suggesting its potential for advanced computational power yet to be discovered., Comment: 18 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables

11. Choice-Based Personalization in MOOCs: Impact on Activity and Perceived Value

Abstract

Personalization in education describes instruction that is tailored to learners' interests, attributes, or background and can be applied in various ways, one of which is through choice. In choice-based personalization, learners choose topics or resources that fit them the most. Personalization may be especially important (and under-used) with diverse learners, such as in a MOOC context. We report the impact of choice-based personalization on activity level, learning gains, and satisfaction in a Climate Science MOOC. The MOOC's learning assignments had learners choose resources on climate-related issues in either their geographic locale (Personalized group) or in given regions (Generic group). 219 learners completed at least one of the two assignments. Over the entire course, personalization increased learners' activity (number of course events), self-reported understanding of local issues, and self-reported likelihood to change climate-related habits. We found no differences on assignment completion rate, assignment length, and self-reported time-on-task. These results show that benefits of personalization extend beyond the original task and affect learners' overall experience. We discuss design and implications of choice-based personalization, as well as opportunities for choice-based personalization at scale.

Abstract

In this paper, we build on the work of [T. Hughes, G. Sangalli, VARIATIONAL MULTISCALE ANALYSIS: THE FINE-SCALE GREENS' FUNCTION, PROJECTION, OPTIMIZATION, LOCALIZATION, AND STABILIZED METHODS, SIAM Journal of Numerical Analysis, 45(2), 2007] dealing with the explicit computation of the Fine-Scale Green's function. The original approach chooses a set of functionals associated with a projector to compute the Fine-Scale Green's function. The construction of these functionals, however, does not generalise to arbitrary projections, higher dimensions, or Spectral Element methods. We propose to generalise the construction of the required functionals by using dual functions. These dual functions can be directly derived from the chosen projector and are explicitly computable. We show how to find the dual functions for both the $L^2$ and the $H^1_0$ projections. We then go on to demonstrate that the Fine-Scale Green's functions constructed with the dual basis functions consistently reproduce the unresolved scales removed by the projector. The methodology is tested using one-dimensional Poisson and advection-diffusion problems, as well as a two-dimensional Poisson problem. We present the computed components of the Fine-Scale Green's function, and the Fine-Scale Green's function itself. These results show that the method works for arbitrary projections, in arbitrary dimensions. Moreover, the methodology can be applied to any Finite/Spectral Element or Isogeometric framework.

29. Transverse Recoil Imprinted on Free-Electron Radiation

Abstract

Phenomena of free-electron X-ray radiation are treated almost exclusively with classical electrodynamics, despite the intrinsic interaction being that of quantum electrodynamics. The lack of quantumness arises from the vast disparity between the electron energy and the much smaller photon energy, resulting in a small cross-section that makes quantum effects negligible. Here we identify a fundamentally distinct phenomenon of electron radiation that bypasses this energy disparity, and thus displays extremely strong quantum features. This phenomenon arises when free-electron transverse scattering occurs during the radiation process, creating entanglement between each transversely recoiled electron and the photons it emitted. This phenomenon profoundly modifies the characteristics of free-electron radiation mediated by crystals, compared to conventional classical analysis and even previous quantum analysis. We also analyze conditions to detect this phenomenon using low-emittance electron beams and high-resolution X-ray spectrometers. These quantum radiation features could guide the development of compact coherent X-ray sources facilitated by nanophotonics and quantum optics.

Abstract

Developing new material platforms for use in superconductor-semiconductor hybrid structures is desirable due to limitations caused by intrinsic microwave losses present in commonly used III/V material systems. With the recent reports on tantalum superconducting qubits that show improvements over the Nb and Al counterparts, exploring Ta as an alternative superconductor in hybrid material systems is promising. Here, we study the growth of Ta on semiconducting Ge (001) substrates grown via molecular beam epitaxy. We show that at a growth temperature of 400$^{\circ}$C the Ta diffuses into the Ge matrix in a self-limiting nature resulting in smooth and abrupt surfaces and interfaces with roughness on the order of 3-7 \r{A} as measured by atomic force microscopy and x-ray reflectivity. The films are found to be a mixture of Ta$_{5}$Ge$_{3}$ and TaGe$_{2}$ binary alloys and form a native oxide that seems to form a sharp interface with the underlying film. These films are superconducting with a $T_{C}\sim 1.8-2$K and $H_{C}^{\perp} \sim 1.88T$, $H_{C}^{\parallel} \sim 5.1T$. These results show this tantalum germanide film to be promising for future superconducting quantum information platforms.
