In this article, I examine Dale Hardiman and Stephen Royce’s critical design work Open Garden: Digital Mirror (2020) to explore their approach to the reuse and modification of electronic waste (e-waste) and proprietary software of the iPhone 8. Drawing on Mark Fisher’s theory of the weird, along with Sara Ahmed’s concept of ‘queer use’ and John Scanlan’s cultural theory of garbage, I consider how the designers’ conspicuously clandestine re-appropriation of the effective and affective properties of discarded devices animates the physical and metaphysical possibilities of repair. I demonstrate how re-appropriation as repair can precipitate a form of weird design that provokes reflection on the possibilities and potentialities of deviance and departure within the discipline. Numerous studies have sought to demonstrate the utility of digital measures of motor function in Parkinson's disease. Frameworks, such as V3, document digital measure development: technical verification, analytical and clinical validation. We present the results of a study to (1) technically verify accelerometers in an Apple iPhone 8 Plus and ActiGraph GT9X versus an oscillating table and (2) analytically validate software tasks for walking and pronation/supination on the iPhone plus passively detect walking measures with the ActiGraph in healthy volunteers versus human raters. In technical verification, 99.4% of iPhone and 91% of ActiGraph tests show good or excellent agreement versus the oscillating table as the gold standard. For the iPhone software task and algorithms, intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) > 0.75 are achieved versus the human raters for measures when walking distance is >10 s and pronation/supination when the arm is rotated more than two times. Passively detected walking start and end time was accurate to approx. 1 s and walking measures were accurate to one unit, e.g., one step. The results suggest that the Apple iPhone and ActiGraph GT9X accelerometers are fit for purpose and that task and passively collected measures are sufficiently analytically valid to assess usability and clinical validity in Parkinson's patients. This article explores the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in obtaining health information, specifically focusing on Siri, the intelligent assistant developed by Apple. The study compares Siri's responses to frequently asked questions related to gastroenterology on both the iPhone and iWatch. The research found that the iPhone provided more reliable references and images compared to the iWatch, but there was no significant difference in the trustworthiness of the information between the two devices. Objective: The objective of this project is to create a three‐dimensional (3D) printed smartphone adaptor for flexible nasolaryngoscopy (FNL) to provide an affordable alternative to commercial options and a better fit than generic telescope phone adaptors. Method: We designed an adaptor using computer aided software to connect an iPhone XS to an Olympus Rhino‐Laryngo Fibre Scope. We experimented with various 3D printing materials and iterative designs to create a case that allowed for quality recording of a nasolaryngoscope exam using the iPhone's built in ×2 telescopic zoom lens. Results: Our 3D printed adaptor provides a cost‐effective alternative to commercially available FNL smartphone adaptors and is capable of capturing high‐quality images and videos of the nasopharynx and larynx. These images are useful for senior clinician review, decrease the need for repeat examination, can be utilized for education, avail telehealth review, and provides a way to digitally record examinations to electronic medical records for future comparison without the need for an endoscopy tower. Conclusion: Smartphone adaptors for FNL have been established to be of clinical value. Despite being simple devices, they continue to be expensive. This potentially limits access to junior clinicians, who stand to gain most from the ability to review images of examinations with senior colleagues. Our 3D printed smartphone case provides a cost‐effective alternative, with a better fit than generic adaptors, at a print cost of $29 AUD. Objective: To verify the reliability of information, the sources of information used and the user opinions of the free mobile applications (apps) with nutritional information available in Brazil.Design: Descriptive, cross-sectional study.Setting: We evaluated the content about nutrition of free apps available on the App Store of iPhone 5S with software iOS 8.4.1 and on the Play Store of the Android platform, version 2.3.6. For this, we compared the nutrition information provided by the app with (i) the Brazilian Food Composition Table (TACO), of 2011; (ii) food composition table: support for nutritional decision, of 2002; and (iii) the National Study of Family Expenditure: food composition tables, of 1999. The evaluation included the description and quantity of macro- and micronutrients in foods. In addition, we evaluated the trustworthiness of information about food energy values and analysed the comments and ratings made by users.Subjects: Mobile apps related to nutrition.Results: We assessed sixteen apps for mobile devices. Considering the foods selected (a basic Brazilian food basket for the month of August 2015), the apps presented partially adequate or inadequate information about food composition (macro- and micronutrients). The adequacy of the food energy values ranged from 0 to 57·1 %. Despite this, the apps received positive ratings by users.Conclusions: The mobile apps about nutrition currently available and evaluated in the present study in Brazil are not useful for nutritional guidance because most of them are not based on reliable sources of information. Natural ecosystems exhibit complex dynamics of interacting species. Man-made ecosystems exhibit similar dynamics and, in the case of mobile app stores, can be said to perform optimization as developers seek to maximize app downloads. This work aims to understand stability and instability within app store dynamics and how it affects fitness. The investigation is carried out with AppEco, a model of the iOS App Store, which was extended for this paper and updated to model the store from 2008 to 2014. AppEco models apps containing features, developers who build the apps, users who download apps according to their preferences, and an app store that presents apps to the users. It also models developers who use commonly observed strategies to build their apps: innovator, milker, optimizer, copycat, and flexible (the ability to choose any strategy). Results show that despite the success of the copycat strategy, there is a clear stable state for low proportion of copycats in developer populations, mirroring results in theoretical biology for producer–scrounger systems. The results also show that the best fitness is achieved when the evolutionary optimizer (as producer) and copycat (as scrounger) strategies coexist together in stable proportions. Every aspect of our daily lives has been touched by the ubiquitous nature of mobile devices. We have experienced an exponential growth of mobile computing-a trend that seems to have no limit. This paper provides a report on the findings of a recent offering of an iPhone Application Development course at Sheridan College, Ontario, Canada. It includes a report on the effectiveness of the course by assessing students' opinions of the course, and by analyzing student performance scores in relation to traditional programming courses. It also provides an overview of the development environment, an assessment of this new course including qualitative surveys, informal observations and quantitative analysis including student performance score results. Overall, it was found that students enjoyed the iPhone course and performed very well. The iPhone Group exceeded the performance of a Comparison Group: F(1,81) = 4.145, p < .05. The Simon presumptive color test was used in combination with the built-in digital camera on a mobile phone to detect methamphetamine. The real-time Red-Green-Blue (RGB) basic color data was obtained using an application installed on the mobile phone and the relationship profile between RGB intensity, including other calculated values, and the colourimetric product was investigated. A wide linear range (0.1-2.5 mg mL-1) and a low detection limit (0.0110 + 0.0001-0.044 + 0.002 mg mL-1) were achieved. The method also required a small sample size (20 mL). The results obtained from the analysis of illicit methamphetamine tablets were comparable to values obtained from gas chromatograph-flame ionization detector (GC-FID) analysis. Method validation indicated good intra- and inter-day precision (2.27-4.49%RSD and 2.65-5.62%RSD, respectively). On-site determination of trace copper ions in natural waters is of great significance to environmental monitoring, and how to develop accurate and specific point-of-care test methods is one critical issue. In the study, a paper-based analytical device (PAD) being modified with a new truncated DNAzyme (CLICK-T, which was derived from a reported DNAzyme-CLICK-17) was developed for Cu ions detection. The detection mechanism was based on Cu(II)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (Cu(II)AAC) reaction. It can directly conduct on-site analysis of Cu(II) ions based on fluorescent signals detected using a mobile phone. In the assay, the CLICK-T was firstly modified on the PADs. Then, water samples containing Cu ions mixed with 3-azido-7-hydroxycoumarin and 3-butyn-1-ol were instantly dripped on PADs and incubated for 20 min. Finally, the PADs were excited at 365 nm and emitted fluorescence which could be analyzed on site using smart phones. The Cu(II) concentration could be quantified through RGB analysis with the aid of iPhone APP software. The limit of detection is 0.1 µM by the naked eye due to the fact that CLICK-T exhibited a good catalytic effect on Cu(II)AAC. The Cu(II) concentration could also be directly detected without using reductant, such as ascorbic acid, which is prone to be oxidized in air. Android is currently leading the smartphone segment in terms of market share since its introduction in 2007. Android applications are written in Java using an API designed for mobile apps. Other smartphone platforms, such as Apple's iOS or Microsoft's Windows Phone 7, differ greatly in their native application programming model. App developers who want to publish their applications for different platforms are required to re-implement the application using the respective native SDK. In this paper we describe a cross-compilation approach, whereby Android applications are cross-compiled to C for iOS and to C# for Windows Phone 7. We describe different aspects of our cross-compiler, from byte code level cross-compilation to API mapping. A prototype of our cross-compiler called XMLVM is available under an Open Source license. Aim The increased utilization of smartphones within the clinical environment together with connected applications (apps) provides opportunity for doctors, including coloproctologists, to integrate such technology into clinical practice. However, the reliability of unregulated medical apps has recently been called into question. Here, we review contemporary medical apps specifically themed towards colorectal diseases and assess levels of medical professional involvement in their design and content. Method The most popular smartphone app stores (iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Nokia, Windows and Samsung) were searched for colorectal disease themed apps, using the disease terms colorectal cancer, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis, haemorrhoids, anal fissure, bowel incontinence and irritable bowel syndrome. Results A total of 68 individual colorectal themed apps were identified, amongst which there were five duplicates. Only 29% of colorectal apps had had customer satisfaction ratings and 32% had named medical professional involvement in their development or content. Conclusion The benefits of apps are offset by lack of colorectal specification. There is little medical professional involvement in their design. Collaborative tagging have emerged as a ubiquitous way to annotate and organize online resources. As a kind of descriptive keyword, large amount of tags are created and associated to multiple types of resources, e.g., web pages, photos, videos and tweets. Users' tagging actions over time reflect their changing interests. Monitoring and analyzing the temporal patterns of tags can provide important insights to trace hot topics on the web. Existing work focuses on deriving temporal patterns for individual tags. However, there exist remarkable correlations among tags assigned to online resources. In this paper, we propose a new approach to detect bursty tagging event, which captures the relations among a group of correlated tags where the tags are either bursty or associated with bursty tag co-occurrence. This kind of bursty tagging event generally corresponds to a real life event. It profiles the events with more representative and comprehensible clues. The proposed approach is divided into three stages. We exploit the sliding time intervals to extract bursty features as the first step, and then adopt graph clustering techniques to group bursty features into meaningful bursty events. We discuss the choice of similarity and granularity for event detection. After that, we further utilize an automatically generated tag taxonomy to organize bursty events to facilitate the burst oriented navigation and analysis.
