The bottlenose dolphin is a species often used in the entertainment industry worldwide. They are the most commonly encountered type of dolphin in aquariums and water parks, where they are featured in shows. This research aims to determine the behavioural differences of Tursiops spp. living in their natural habitat versus in captivity to improve and enhance the quality of life for these animals in captivity. Data collection for this study involved a direct observation method of dolphins at Bali Exotic Marine Park (BEMP) and Lovina Beach for four weeks at each location, with a descriptive analysis of the findings. The results indicate that bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops spp.) living in their natural habitat exhibit behaviours typical of wild dolphins and do not show signs of stress, demonstrating well-being with non-repetitive and varied behaviour patterns according to their natural activities. In contrast, bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops spp.) in captivity display behaviours similar to those in the wild but also exhibit abnormal behaviours, including signs of stress such as the occurrence of Repetitive Abnormal Behaviour three times (0.3%), as well as other repetitive behaviours like surface displays, side breaching, chuffing, and sexual behaviours. These behaviours may be attributed to a lack of social interaction with other dolphins, disturbances from humans, and limitations in the captive environment.

Banana is one of the leading fruit commodities of Indonesia and ranks the sixth position as one of the largest banana producers in the world. There are more than 200 types of banana in Indonesia. The utilization of bananas is influenced by the local culture, where in every 10 horticultural households, 5 of them plant bananas both as garden plants or field plants. This horticultural crop is expectantly being one of the actions to improve economic prosperity especially in rural areas. In maintaining the diversity of the growing bananas in rural areas, a geospatial approach to identify the vegetation is required. Remote sensing technology is one of the solutions to observe and to develop banana plants with one of the methods namely Object Based Image Analysis (OBIA). This method consists of segmentation, classification, and validation. In classification process, the OBIA method distinguishes objects not only based on pixel values but also on the basis of the shape, area, and texture around them. This research has proven that the classification using OBIA method is better than the traditional classification such as maximum likelihood classification method to identify banana plants. OBIA method can quickly identifies the vegetation and non-vegetation, also the regular plants and banana plants.

The need for bananas in Bali far exceeds the production. To obtain optimal production according to their genetic potential, the development of banana cultivation should be preceded by a land suitability evaluation study. This study aims to evaluate the land suitability based on agroecological parameters such as rainfall, altitude, dry month, slope, and considering current land use. The results showed that 257.467 ha or 46.16% of the area of Bali Province has the potential to be planted with bananas. Buleleng Regency has the widest area for the development of banana plants, followed by Karangasem, Tabanan, Jembrana and Bangli. Denpasar town has the smallest suitable area. Based on the observed agroclimate parameters, slope is the most severe limiting factor in banana cultivation, while rainfall, altitude, and dry months are not significant limiting factors. Recommended land use for the development of banana plants is garden, grass, rain-fed rice field, scrub, bare land, and moor.

Remotely sensed imagery is a type of data that is compatible with the monitoring and mapping of changes in built-up and bare land within urban areas as the impacts of population growth and urbanisation increase. The application of currently available remote sensing indices, however, has some limitations with respect to distinguishing built-up and bare land in urban areas. In this study, a new index for transforming remote sensing data for mapping built-up and bare land areas is proposed. The Enhanced Built-Up and Bareness Index (EBBI) is able to map built-up and bare land areas using a single calculation. The EBBI is the first built-up and bare land index that applies near infrared (NIR), short wave infrared (SWIR), and thermal infrared (TIR) channels simultaneously. This new index was applied to distinguish built-up and bare land areas in Denpasar (Bali, Indonesia) and had a high accuracy level when compared to existing indices. The EBBI was more effective at discriminating built-up and bare land areas and at increasing the accuracy of the built-up density percentage than five other indices.

Understanding the changes in gross primary production (GPP), which is the total carbon fixation by terrestrial ecosystems through vegetation photosynthesis, due to land use conversion in a tourism city is important for carbon cycle studies. Satellite data from Landsat 5, Landsat 7 and Landsat 8 and meteorological data are used to calculate annual GPP for 1995, 2003 and 2014, respectively, using the vegetation production model (VPM) in the tourism city Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia. Five land use types generated from topographic maps in three different years over the past two decades are used to quantify the impacts of land use changes on GPP estimation values. Analysis was performed for two periods to determine changes in land use and GPP value as well as their speed. The results demonstrated that urban land development, namely, the increase of settlement areas due to tourism activity, had overall negative effects on terrestrial GPP. The total GPP of the whole area decreased by 7793.96 tC year−1 (12.65%) during the study period. The decline is due to the conversion of agriculture and grassland area into settlements, which caused the city to lose half of its ability to uptake carbon through vegetation. However, although forest area is declining, forest maintenance and restoration by making them protection areas has been helpful in preventing a drastic decline in GPP value over the past two decades. This study provides information that is useful for carbon resource management, tourism, policy making and scholars concerned about carbon reduction in a tourism city.
