1. Contradictions in the Development of the Welfare Non-Profit Sector in Russia

Abstract: The article focuses on the core contradictions within the development of the social non-profit sector in Russia. The empirical basis of the study comprises statistical data, legal documents regulating the social services’ sphere, research data from previous studies conducted in Russia, as well as qualitative data collected for this study. The introduction provides background information on the stages of reforming the social service system in Russia. The first part is devoted to the contradictions between international trends and Russian patterns. In line with a neoliberal approach, non-profit NGOs play a significant role as key actors in social work providing social services for different client groups. At the same time, they are not independent and Russian civil society is not yet strong enough to realize social rights of citizens. In the next section, some of the key issues of interaction between the government and NGOs are discussed. An analysis of the current situation demonstrates that while a social partnership between the state and NGOs is affirmed by authorities on official level, in practice, the state still dominates the social sector. The article then focuses on how Russian NGOs have reoriented their efforts toward financial sustainability through government support.

2. The Characteristics of Social Service in Different Types of Settlements: As Seen by Consumers of Services (Based on the Results of an all-Russian Survey)

Abstract: Today the system of social services is being transformed, the number of social service providers is growing, and new forms of interaction with recipients of social assistance are being introduced. A special role in the new configuration of the social service system is given to socially oriented non-profits and social entrepreneurs. This article presents the results of a study of the social service system from the viewpoint of recipients of social services. The main method for collecting information was an all-Russian online survey among social service clients or their representatives. The research methodology involved distinguishing 5 clusters according to type of settlement (megacities, cities with a million-plus population, large cities, small towns and rural areas). The sample consisted of 2267 people. Based on the results of the study, main groups of social services in various types of settlements were proposed. The results showed a lack of development of the non-state service sector in all identified clusters. Barriers preventing the involvement of NGOs in the social services system are associated, on the one hand, with the conviction of the citizens themselves (especially the older generation) that only state institutions can provide quality and free services. On the other hand, many NGOs do not want to be listed in regional registries of social service providers, primarily due to low tariffs, reporting mechanisms and cost recovery. Residents of small towns and rural areas often face a lack of choice, the dominance of one type of provider, underdeveloped social infrastructure in their area, and a limited list of services available to them free of charge.

3. The Patterns of Interaction Between Russian Citizens and NGOs in The Context of Institutional Change

Abstract: The article analyzes the institutional transformation of the sphere of social services in the context of the development of the non-profit sector. The institutional transformation in the field covers the issues of changing public attitudes, the level of public trust and prevailing stereotypes. Besides, online interactions that are spreading while providing and receiving services influence the processes of the individual choice under constantly changing market conditions. The results are based on two sociological surveys devoted to studying the attitude of citizens towards the non-profit sector of social services. The surveys were conducted in Russian regions in 2019(n=1204) and 2020 (n=2047). Among the factors influencing public attitudes towards NGOs are citizens' understanding of the meaning of social services, awareness of non-state service providers and the opportunities of NGO social service sector. During the COVID-19 pandemic, people tended to resort to online services more often, we assume that this hastened the transition to the online format of interaction in the analyzed field. The revealed relationship of attitudes towards state and non-state type providers has demonstrated that the attitude of citizens towards one type of social service provider has an impact on the formation of attitudes towards another type of provider confirming that public trust is systemic. We have identified the key stereotypes that determine the choice of the type of provider by the recipients of services. It has also been found that the personal experience of interaction with social services organizations plays an important role for establishing trust in state and non-state social services organizations. The dynamics of the public trust in the non-profit sector of social services has been analyzed based on the identification of age subgroups.

4. Hydrogen isotopic ratio by residual gas analysis during the JET DT campaigns

Abstract: The analysis of hydrogen isotope content is crucial for understanding the operation of fusion devices. Hydrogen isotopic analysis in the core and plasma edge is conducted through neutron and spectroscopic diagnostics. In the case of exhaust gas, mass spectrometry is employed using residual gas analyzers (RGAs), along with optical gas analysis (OGA) utilizing an optical Penning gauge. The use of traditional quadrupole mass spectrometers for RGA encounters challenges during discharges with tritium gas due to signal overlap of different hydrogen molecules at the same mass number. This paper introduces a novel technique to address this issue through a cross-related analysis of RGA data with OGA results. Another consideration in mass spectrometry analysis is the instrument’s varying sensitivity concerning the gas mass number. The paper includes gas calibration data results for all the quadrupoles used in the JET gas analysis. Hydrogen isotopic ratios are calculated from RGA detected currents using simple formulas. The results of this procedure are presented for selected DT JET discharges in relation to the JET pulse time, and they are compared with corresponding optical data. Time-averaged hydrogen isotopic ratio values are computed for numerous discharges during the DT and T campaigns.

Abstract: Within the 9th European Framework programme, since 2021 EUROfusion is operating five tokamaks under the auspices of a single Task Force called ‘Tokamak Exploitation’. The goal is to benefit from the complementary capabilities of each machine in a coordinated way and help in developing a scientific output scalable to future largre machines. The programme of this Task Force ensures that ASDEX Upgrade, MAST-U, TCV, WEST and JET (since 2022) work together to achieve the objectives of Missions 1 and 2 of the EUROfusion Roadmap: i) demonstrate plasma scenarios that increase the success margin of ITER and satisfy the requirements of DEMO and, ii) demonstrate an integrated approach that can handle the large power leaving ITER and DEMO plasmas. The Tokamak Exploitation task force has therefore organized experiments on these two missions with the goal to strengthen the physics and operational basis for the ITER baseline scenario and for exploiting the recent plasma exhaust enhancements in all four devices (PEX: Plasma EXhaust) for exploring the solution for handling heat and particle exhaust in ITER and develop the conceptual solutions for DEMO. The ITER Baseline scenario has been developed in a similar way in ASDEX Upgrade, TCV and JET. Key risks for ITER such as disruptions and run-aways have been also investigated in TCV, ASDEX Upgrade and JET. Experiments have explored successfully different divertor configurations (standard, super-X, snowflakes) in MAST-U and TCV and studied tungsten melting in WEST and ASDEX Upgrade. The input from the smaller devices to JET has also been proven successful to set-up novel control schemes on disruption avoidance and detachment.

Abstract: In 2021 JET exploited its unique capabilities to operate with T and D–T fuel with an ITER-like Be/W wall (JET-ILW). This second major JET D–T campaign (DTE2), after DTE1 in 1997, represented the culmination of a series of JET enhancements—new fusion diagnostics, new T injection capabilities, refurbishment of the T plant, increased auxiliary heating, in-vessel calibration of 14 MeV neutron yield monitors—as well as significant advances in plasma theory and modelling in the fusion community. DTE2 was complemented by a sequence of isotope physics campaigns encompassing operation in pure tritium at high T-NBI power. Carefully conducted for safe operation with tritium, the new T and D–T experiments used 1 kg of T (vs 100 g in DTE1), yielding the most fusion reactor relevant D–T plasmas to date and expanding our understanding of isotopes and D–T mixture physics. Furthermore, since the JET T and DTE2 campaigns occurred almost 25 years after the last major D–T tokamak experiment, it was also a strategic goal of the European fusion programme to refresh operational experience of a nuclear tokamak to prepare staff for ITER operation. The key physics results of the JET T and DTE2 experiments, carried out within the EUROfusion JET1 work package, are reported in this paper. Progress in the technological exploitation of JET D–T operations, development and validation of nuclear codes, neutronic tools and techniques for ITER operations carried out by EUROfusion (started within the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme and continuing under the Horizon Europe FP) are reported in (Litaudon et al Nucl. Fusion accepted), while JET experience on T and D–T operations is presented in (King et al Nucl. Fusion submitted).

Abstract: To achieve their goals, future thermonuclear reactors such as ITER and DEMO are expected to operate plasmas with a high magnetic field, triangularity and confinement. To address the corresponding challenges, the concept of the high-field ( $B_{\textrm{T}} \unicode{x2A7D}$ 5 T), high-current ( $I_{\textrm{P}} \unicode{x2A7D}$ 2 MA) COMPASS Upgrade tokamak was established, and the device is currently being constructed in Prague, Czech Republic. This contribution provides an overview of the priority physics topics for the future physics programme of COMPASS Upgrade, namely: (i) characterisation of alternative confinement modes, (ii) a power exhaust including liquid metals, (iii) operation with a hot first wall and (iv) the influence of plasma shape on pedestal stability and confinement. The main scenarios are presented, as predicted by METIS and FIESTA codes. Pedestal pressure and density are estimated using EPED, multi-machine semi-empirical scaling and a neutral penetration model. Access to detachment is estimated using a detachment qualifier.

Abstract: An overview of the modeling approaches, validation methods and recent main results of analysis and modeling activities related to the plasma-surface interaction (PSI) in JET-ILW experiments, including the recent H/D/T campaigns, is presented in this paper. Code applications to JET experiments improve general erosion/migration/retention prediction capabilities as well as various physics extensions, for instance a treatment of dust particles transport and a detailed description of melting and splashing of PFC induced by transient events at JET. 2D plasma edge transport codes like the SOLPS-ITER code as well as PSI codes are key to realistic description of relevant physical processes in power and particle exhaust. Validation of the PSI and edge transport models across JET experiments considering various effects (isotope effects, first wall geometry, including detailed 3D shaping of plasma-facing components, self-sputtering, thermo-forces, physical and chemically assisted physical sputtering formation of W and Be hydrides) is very important for predictive simulations of W and Be erosion and migration in ITER as well as for increasing quantitative credibility of the models. JET also presents a perfect test-bed for the investigation and modeling of melt material dynamics and its splashing and droplet ejection mechanisms. We attribute the second group of processes rather to transient events as for the steady state and, thus, treat those as independent additions outside the interplay with the first group.

Abstract: ERO is a 3D Monte-Carlo impurity transport and plasma-surface interaction code. In 2011 it was applied for the ITER first wall (FW) life time predictions [1] (critical blanket module BM11). After that the same code was significantly improved during its application to existing fusion-relevant plasma devices: the tokamak JET equipped with an ITER-like wall and linear plasma device PISCES-B. This has allowed testing the sputtering data for beryllium (Be) and showing that the “ERO-min” fit based on the large (50%) deuterium (D) surface content is well suitable for plasma-wetted areas (D plasma). The improved procedure for calculating of the effective sputtering yields for each location along the plasma-facing surface using the recently developed semi-analytical sheath approach was validated. The re-evaluation of the effective yields for BM11 following the similar revisit of the JET data has indicated significant increase of erosion and motivated the current re-visit of ERO simulations. Abstract: Preliminary results investigating the microstructure, bonding and effect of beryllium oxide formation on retention in the JET ITER-like wall beryllium tiles, are presented. The tiles have been investigated by several techniques: Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) equipped with Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX), Transmission Electron microscopy (TEM) equipped with EDX and Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (EELS), Raman Spectroscopy and Thermal Desorption Spectroscopy (TDS). This paper focuses on results from melted materials of the dump plate tiles in JET. From our results and the literature, it is concluded, beryllium can form micron deep oxide islands contrary to the nanometric oxides predicted under vacuum conditions. The deepest oxides analyzed were up to 2-micron thicknesses. The beryllium Deuteroxide (BeOxDy) bond was found with Raman Spectroscopy. Application of EELS confirmed the oxide presence and stoichiometry. Literature suggests these oxides form at temperatures greater than 700 °C where self-diffusion of beryllium ions through the surface oxide layer can occur. Further oxidation is made possible between oxygen plasma impurities and the beryllium ions now present at the wall surface. Under Ultra High Vacuum (UHV) nanometric Beryllium oxide layers are formed and passivate at room temperature. After continual cyclic heating (to the point of melt formation) in the presence of oxygen impurities from the plasma, oxide growth to the levels seen experimentally (approximately two microns) is proposed. This retention mechanism is not considered to contribute dramatically to overall retention in JET, due to low levels of melt formation. However, this mechanism, thought the result of operation environment and melt formation, could be of wider concern to ITER, dependent on wall temperatures.

Abstract: Surface morphology and its evolution during the plasma irradiation is known to have a large influence on the erosion and resulting lifetime of plasma-facing components as well as tritium retention. For instance, surface roughness can affect physical sputtering, re-deposition, as well as angular distributions of the sputtered species. In this study the effect of surface roughness is implemented into the 3D Monte-Carlo code ERO2.0. First modelling results for molybdenum (Mo) irradiated with deuterium (D) in the conditions foreseen for the planned experiments at the linear plasma device PSI-2 are presented. Using the constructed examples of surfaces with various (regular and fractal) roughness types it is shown that the effective sputtering yield decreases for rough surfaces in comparison to smooth ones. The angular distribution of particles escaping from the rough surface collimates with the increase of the surface structure's aspect ratio. Moreover, the modelling predicts flattening of the surface during the plasma irradiation due to the preferable re-deposition in the “valleys” and sputtering of the peak tops.

Abstract: The identification of the sources of atomic tungsten and the measurement of their radiation distribution in front of all plasma-facing components has been performed in JET with the help of two digital cameras with the same two-dimensional view, equipped with interference filters of different bandwidths centred on the W I (400.88 nm) emission line. A new algorithm for the subtraction of the continuum radiation was successfully developed and is now used to evaluate the W erosion even in the inner divertor region where the strong recombination emission is dominating over the tungsten emission. Analysis of W sputtering and W redistribution in the divertor by video imaging spectroscopy with high spatial resolution for three different magnetic configurations was performed. A strong variation of the emission of the neutral tungsten in toroidal direction and corresponding W erosion has been observed. 13. Beryllium global erosion and deposition at JET-ILW simulated with ERO2.0

Abstract: The recently developed Monte-Carlo code ERO2.0 is applied to the modelling of limited and diverted discharges at JET with the ITER-like wall (ILW). The global beryllium (Be) erosion and deposition is simulated and compared to experimental results from passive spectroscopy. For the limiter configuration, it is demonstrated that Be self-sputtering is an important contributor (at least 35%) to the Be erosion. Taking this contribution into account, the ERO2.0 modelling confirms previous evidence that high deuterium (D) surface concentrations of up to ∼ 50% atomic fraction provide a reasonable estimate of Be erosion in plasma-wetted areas. For the divertor configuration, it is shown that drifts can have a high impact on the scrape-off layer plasma flows, which in turn affect global Be transport by entrainment and lead to increased migration into the inner divertor. The modelling of the effective erosion yield for different operational phases (ohmic, L- and H-mode) agrees with experimental values within a factor of two, and confirms that the effective erosion yield decreases with increasing heating power and confinement. The model for simulation the effect of the surface roughness was earlier implemented into the 3D Monte-Carlo code ERO2.0 and validated using results of ion beam experiments and experiments in the linear plasma device PSI-2. In the present study the developed ERO2.0 surface morphology model was applied to the JET-ILW tungsten (W) divertor consisting of smooth bulk W and W-coated CFC components. Influence of the surface roughness on the W erosion as well as on the transport of sputtered material in conditions of inclined magnetic field was investigated. Simulation results are in a good agreement with existing experimental findings.

15. Youth as Social Service Consumers: the Case of Russia

Abstract: The formation of a mixed system of public goods production in Russia has been accompanied by the increasing role of the private sector in the field of social services, characterized by innovative approaches to the provision of youth services. This paper presents the results of a study aimed at the following key questions: what the place of youth in the social service system is, and what the attitude of youth to state social services and NGOs is. Empirical data were obtained from surveys of residents of St. Petersburg and Yekaterinburg (n = 1204), among which almost 40% of participants were young respondents aged between 18 and 35. The questionnaire included questions about the demand for social services, relationships to NGOs as service providers, the prevalence of receiving services using digital technologies, the issuers concerning the quality of social services, and trust/distrust of NGOs. Different client groups among youth and development trends were identified. The research results indicate the prevalence of young respondents who are confident that new providers can expand the range of social services and improve their quality. Young people showed a high level of satisfaction with the services they received from non-governmental organizations, and they believe that NGOs are more client-oriented, then governmental organizations. The study demonstrates that youth is becoming one of the key actors in the developing system of mixed-welfare provision in Russia, which is more consistent with the modern views on young people as consumers of social services and which is able to attract them to the service market as providers.

Abstract: Intra-ELM tungsten sources, which dominate the total W source, are quantified in the inner and outer divertor of JET-ILW. The amount of the sputtered W atoms for individual ELMs demonstrates a clear dependence on the ELM frequency. It decreases when the pedestal temperature is lower and, correspondingly, the ELM frequency is higher. Nevertheless, the entire gross erosion W source (the number of eroded W atoms per second due to ELMs) increases initially with ELM frequency and reaches its maximum at fELM ≈ 50–55 Hz followed by its reduction in the high frequency range.The in/out asymmetry of the intra-ELM W sources during ELMs is a critical issue and is investigated in this contribution. At a lower ELM frequency of about 35 Hz the outer divertor gross W source is larger by a factor of 1.5. However the in/out asymmetry of the W erosion decreases strongly with ELM frequency demonstrating a nearly symmetric W source in both divertor legs at frequencies above 70 Hz. The screening of tungsten in the open magnetic configuration with strike points on tile 5 is more efficient by a factor of about 1.7 than in the corner configuration with the outer strike point at the pumping duct entrance.

Abstract: Use of new 3-strap ICRF antennas with all-tungsten (W) limiters in ASDEX Upgrade results in a reduction of the W sources at the antenna limiters and of the W content in the confined plasma by at least a factor of 2 compared to the W-limiter 2-strap antennas used in the past. The reduction is observed with a broad range of plasma shapes. In multiple locations of antenna frame, the limiter W source has a minimum when RF image currents are decreased by cancellation of the RF current contributions of the central and the outer straps. In JET with ITER-like wall, ITER-like antenna produces about 20% less of main chamber radiation and of W content compared to the old A2 antennas. However the effect of the A2 antennas on W content is scattered depending on which antennas are powered. Experiments in JET with trace nitrogen (N2) injection show that a presence of active ICRF antenna close to the midplane injection valve has little effect on the core N content, both in dipole and in -90° phasing. This indicates that the effect of ICRF on impurity transport across the scape-off-layer is small in JET compared to the dominant effect on impurity sources leading to increased impurity levels during ICRF operation. Abstract: The beryllium erosion by helium plasma irradiation is studied at the PISCES-B linear plasma device and interpreted using the accompanying simulations by the ERO code. The influence of plasma conditions and varying negative biasing of the Be plasma target on BeI and BeII absolute line intensities are reproduced in detail by the simulations. The synthetic axial line intensity shapes and line ratios match with experiment. This indicates that atomic data are quite accurate. The initial population state of quasi-metastable 3P level in BeI is found to be MS:GS= 0.33:1 for all conditions. The yields determined by the modeling interpretation are compared to the SDTrimSP code simulations in the binary collision approximation. Abstract: For simulation of plasma-facing component erosion in fusion experiments, an analytical expression for the ion velocity just before the surface impact including the local electric field and an optional surface biasing effect is suggested. Energy and angular impact distributions and the resulting effective sputtering yields were produced for several experimental scenarios at JET ILW mostly involving PFCs exposed to an oblique magnetic field. The analytic solution has been applied as an improvement to earlier ERO modelling of localized, Be outer limiter, RF-enhanced erosion, modulated by toggling of a remote, however magnetically connected ICRH antenna. The effective W sputtering yields due to D and Be ion impact in Type-I and Type-III ELMs and inter-ELM conditions were also estimated using the analytical approach and benchmarked by spectroscopy. The intra-ELM W sputtering flux increases almost 10 times in comparison to the inter-ELM flux. Abstract: Physical and chemical assisted physical sputtering were characterised by the BeI and BeII line and BeD band emission in the observation chord measuring the sightline integrated emission in front of the inner beryllium limiter at the torus midplane. The 3D local transport and plasma-surface interaction Monte-Carlo modelling (ERO code [18]) is a key for the interpretation of the observations in the vicinity of the shaped solid Be limiter. The plasma parameter variation (density scan) in limiter regime has provided a useful material for the simulation benchmark. The improved background plasma parameters input, the new analytical expression for particle tracking in the sheath region and implementation of the BeD release into ERO has helped to clarify some deviations between modelling and experiments encountered in the previous studies [4,5]. Reproducing the observations provides additional confidence in our ‘ERO-min’ fit for the physical sputtering yields for the plasma-wetted areas based on simulated data.

Abstract: A global heat flux model based on a fractional derivative of plasma pressure is proposed for the heat transport in fusion plasmas. Abstract: Abstract Quantum chemical calculations, 1H and 13C NMR, and X-ray studies showed that, in contrast to 4-arylazo-2-pyrazolin-5-ones, 4-(1-alkylbenzimidazol-2-ylazo)-2-pyrazoline-5-ones mainly exist in the condensed phase as unusual ketoazine tautomers of high polarity, while the ketohydrazone tautomer stabilized by intramolecular hydrogen bond apparently predominates in the gas phase. According to calculations, various types of tautomerism are possible for 4-(benzimidazol-2-ylazo)-2-pyrazolin-5-ones, including mono- and bimolecular 1,3-, 1,5-, and 1,7-prototropic migrations proceeding by the single- and double-proton transfer mechanism with low activation energies (ΔE ≠ ≈ 2–14 kcal mol−1). Abstract: Abstract Azomethine derivatives of 1-amino-2-thiobenzimidazole (H2L) were synthesized and studied by IR and 1H NMR spectroscopy. Thiobenzimidazoline tautomeric form of these compounds was found to predominate in a solid state and DMSO solution. Novel mono-and binuclear metal chelates M(HL)2 and M2L2 (M = Ni(II), Cu(II), Co(II), Zn(II), Cd(II)) were synthesized on the basis of H2L derivatives and their composition and structures were established from IR, 1H NMR, EXAFS, and magnetochemical data. Abstract: β-Aminovinylimines containing bulky substituents at the donor nitrogen atoms and copper(II) chelates based on them were synthesized. The compounds were studied by single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, EXAFS, NMR, EPR, and UV/Vis spectroscopy, and magnetochemistry. The complexes with halide bridges exhibit a ferromagnetic type of spin-spin interaction. The metal chelate containing a phenyl substituent in the γ-position of the aminovinylimino ligand absorbs atmospheric oxygen in a methylene dichloride solution, which gives rise to a dimer with oxygen bridges exhibiting an antiferromagnetic type of spin-spin interaction. The structures of the metal chelates were studied by EXAFS and NMR (1H, 13C, and 111Cd) spectroscopy. The structure of the Cd(L1)2 complex was established by X-ray diffraction analysis. 26. Impact of divertor configuration on recycling neutral fluxes for ITER-like wall in JET H-mode plasmas.

Abstract: In recent years it has been well known that in JET, with the ITER-like wall, the performance of high-power H-mode plasmas depends strongly on the magnetic topology of the divertor. This is generally attributed to the effect of the magnetic field shaping on the neutral flux transport and pumping, which—in high density H-mode plasmas—determine the pedestal properties and the global confinement. In this work we have analysed the spatial distribution and the dynamic behaviour of the Dα-emission for different magnetic configurations. Experimental observations indicate that for certain configurations, the surface temperature and the Dα—emission anomalously increase on top of the inner divertor, which points to thermal outgassing there. This is also the region where most beryllium co-deposits accumulate and most deuterium becomes trapped. The overheating at this region far from the strike point (SP) is observed to happen in magnetic configurations with reduced distance between the divertor material surface and the separatrix (clearance). The neutral flux that appears at the upper inner divertor during a few milliseconds after the ELM-crash, is more than an order of magnitude larger than the gas puffing rate and dominates over all other regions. Finally, a preliminary study describes how this thermal fuel outgassing from the co-deposited layers could be used intentionally as a wall-conditioning in JET technique with plasmas that focus their particle and heat flux there. This could be used as a complementary wall isotope control technique and more specifically for tritium recovery from the upper inner divertor where most fuel-trapping beryllium co-deposits accumulate in JET ITER-like wall. Abstract: The ability to detect and control fuel isotopic content down to a 1% concentration level is greatly important for the upcoming JET DTE2 campaign, as well as its associated TT and DD phases. A reduction of H minority concentration even from 2% down to 1% is shown here to have significant impact on the effectiveness of ion cyclotron range of frequencies core heating, while the ability to maintain T or D concentration at or below 1% is critical to limiting fusion neutron generation in the DD and TT phases, correspondingly. The sub-divertor measurement of (global) isotopic concentration, based on Penning-activated optical spectroscopy, can deliver minimally this 1% detection for DTE2 as long as light collection from the Penning emission can be optimized and gradual window transmission deterioration can be minimized. This is simulated with a statistical analysis developed to understand the uncertainty sources in the JET DTE1 data, as well as to guide the optimization of an upgraded, fuel-isotopic content (and helium-ash concentration) gas analysis system for the JET divertor in preparation for DTE2. While this random error can be reduced to allow measurement substantially below 1% concentration, analysis also shows a systematic error of up to 1% understood to be due to plasma–surface interactions in the Penning excitation, suggesting that 1% may still be the low-end limit for the sub-divertor measurement, unless a Penning-source conditioning approach is also developed. 28. Erosion, screening, and migration of tungsten in the JET divertor.

Abstract: The erosion of tungsten (W), induced by the bombardment of plasma and impurity particles, determines the lifetime of plasma-facing components as well as impacting on plasma performance by the influx of W into the confined region. The screening of W by the divertor and the transport of W in the plasma determines largely the W content in the plasma core, but the W source strength itself has a vital impact on this process. The JET tokamak experiment provides access to a large set of W erosion-determining parameters and permits a detailed description of the W source in the divertor closest to the ITER one: (i) effective sputtering yields and fluxes as function of impact energy of intrinsic (Be, C) and extrinsic (Ne, N) impurities as well as hydrogenic isotopes (H, D) are determined and predictions for the tritium (T) isotope are made. This includes the quantification of intra- and inter-edge localised mode (ELM) contributions to the total W source in H-mode plasmas which vary owing to the complex flux compositions and energy distributions in the corresponding phases. The sputtering threshold behaviour and the spectroscopic composition analysis provides an insight in the dominating species and plasma phases causing W erosion. (ii) The interplay between the net and gross W erosion source is discussed considering (prompt) re-deposition, thus, the immediate return of W ions back to the surface due to their large Larmor radius, and surface roughness, thus, the difference between smooth bulk-W and rough W-coating components used in the JET divertor. Both effects impact on the balance equation of local W erosion and deposition. (iii) Post-mortem analysis reveals the net erosion/deposition pattern and the W migration paths over long periods of plasma operation identifying the net W transport to remote areas. This W transport is related to the divertor plasma regime, e.g. attached operation with high impact energies of impinging particles or detached operation, as well as to the applied magnetic configuration in the divertor, e.g. close divertor with good geometrical screening of W or open divertor configuration with poor screening. JET equipped with the ITER-like wall (ILW) provided unique access to the net W erosion rate within a series of 151 subsequent H-mode discharges (magnetic field: T, plasma current: MA, auxiliary power MW) in one magnetic configuration accumulating 900 s of plasma with particle fluences in the range of 5– in the semi-detached inner and attached outer divertor leg. The comparison of W spectroscopy in the intra-ELM and inter-ELM phases with post-mortem analysis of W marker tiles provides a set of gross and net W erosion values at the outer target plate. ERO code simulations are applied to both divertor leg conditions and reproduce the erosion/deposition pattern as well as confirm the high experimentally observed prompt W re-deposition factors of more than 95% in the intra- and inter-ELM phase of the unseeded deuterium H-mode plasma. Conclusions to the expected divertor conditions in ITER as well as to the JET operation in the DT plasma mixture are drawn on basis of this unique benchmark experiment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
